Larry Sharpe and the Libertarians
Larry Sharpe was the libertarian candidate for governor this year, he garnished 90,816 votes putting the libertarian party on the ballot through at least the election of 2022. It will be the sixth party listed on the ballot, after Democratic, Republican, Conservative, Working Families, Green. Independence and Stephanie Miner’s Serve America Party will also be on the ballot.
I don’t know much about the libertarian party in New York but I’m guessing that the chairman of it will likely reserve the Wilson Pakula authorizations to just Republicans. Maybe he or she will give it to Democrats, indeed county committee chairs are free to give authorizations to whomever they want.
I did cast a protest vote for Larry Sharpe as I thought he had many interesting ideas, like pardoning people for SAFE Act violations and reducing the overly burdensome government. But I also recognize the problematic nature of giving the libertarians ballot access status, as it will make it somewhat easier for Republicans to get elected into office in our state.
November 16, 2018 Morning
Good morning! Yeah, it’s Snowy Friday! First of the winter. Next Friday is Buy Nothing Day 🛍οΈ. Still snowing fairly hard this morning and 29 degrees in Delmar. β There is a north-northwest breeze at 11 mph. 🍃. I’m blaming Trump, it never used to snow in November that much, well in recent years, until the prince of darkness was selected to run our country as a better choice to the alternative. Things will start to thaw out at around 10 am. 🌡οΈ
Today snow then turn to rain before 1pm, then a slight chance of rain showers after 4pm. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a high of 38 degrees at 1pm. 10 degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical day around December 8th. Now you know. North wind 5 to 11 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible but the rain that should be starting soon will wash it away into a globby mix of slush for opening day of deer season. A year ago, we had cloudy skies with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 53 degrees. The record high of 71 was set in 2006. Not this one bro. 3.4 inches of snow fell back in 2002.β
The sun will set at 4:31 pm with dusk around 5:01 pm, which is 51 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for rain showers 🌧 and temperatures around 37 degrees. There will be a west breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 42 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 5 seconds over yesterday.
Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a low of 31 degrees at 12am. Typical for tonight. West wind around 8 mph. Things will freeze back up late. In 2017, we had mostly cloudy skies. It got down to 25 degrees. The record low of 7 occurred back in 1972.
With all the talk of the snow, I didn’t think it was a bad commute although the sidewalks where kind of icy last night. β Roads are mostly just wet snow, slush earlier. I guess the snow is kind of pretty and I’m not sure how long it will last as it will be in the forties on Saturday and several sunny days heading into the Thanksgiving weekend. I like snow but I’m not ready for it in November. I’ll take snow from December 15 – January 1st but after then it’s a bit annoying to say the least.
This evening I have to dig out Big Red and clear off the solar panel with a broom. It’s not a lot of snow and it’s not that icy so I don’t expect it to be a big deal. 🚗 Winter comes and goes. I’m fine with that. If I think I will be in town next weekend I might get my truck inspected then.
As previously noted, next Friday is Buy Nothing Day 🛍οΈ when the sun will be setting at 4:26 pm with dusk at 4:57 pm. Hopefully we will have nice weather for the long weekend, I wouldn’t mind doing some snow camping and or traveling. On that day in 2017, we had mostly cloudy skies and temperatures between 37 and 27 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 45 degrees. We hit a record high of 72 back in 1931.

November 15, 2018 Night
Good evening! Modestly heavy snow and 25 degrees in Delmar. β At least a half foot so far has fallen in Delmar, I probably should have moved my truck but at least I made it back to Delmar before the roads got slick. There is a north-northeast breeze at 6 mph. 🍃. Things will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 9 am. 🌡οΈ
Tonight will snow. The snow could be heavy at times. 🌨 Low of 25 degrees at 11pm. Seven degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical night around December 5th. Cool but not outrageously cold. North wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of 4 to 8 inches possible. I bet it will be on the high end of the range. In 2017, we had mostly cloudy skies. It got down to 39 degrees. The record low of 7 occurred back in 1972.
Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous Moon 🌔 with 56% illuminated. The moon will set at 12:00 am. The Beaver Moon 🌕 is on Thanksgiving next Thursday with mostly cloudy skies. The sun will rise at 6:47 am with the first light at 6:17 am, which is one minute and 15 seconds later than yesterday. 🌄 Tonight will have 14 hours and 16 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 8 seconds over last night.
Tomorrow will snow before 10am, then rain and snow likely between 10am and noon, then a chance of rain after noon. 🌧 High of 39 degrees at 2pm. Nine degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical day around December 6th. Northwest wind 5 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible. Seems like it’s mostly a night storm for us, not going to be a big deal for the morning commute. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 53 degrees. A big contrast to today. Very cold and icy by evening day. The record high of 71 was set in 2006. 3.4 inches of snow fell back in 2002.β
Cool this weekend with temperatures running 9 degrees below normal but otherwise sunny. :D Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 42. West wind 7 to 9 mph. Sunday, a slight chance of snow showers after 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 35. Chance of precipitation is 20%. Typical average high for the weekend is 47 degrees. I’ll take the sun. I may head up north this weekend, I’m still thinking about it but there will be a lot of snow up there.
I was looking at the snow accumulation data earlier today βand except for the snow belt there isn’t a ton of snow across the state. The deepest snow were in Essex County state wide and even there was only 8 inches. It looks like last weekend I could have gone up to the East Branch and only had a few inches of snow to deal with their up north.
Cooperstown was a fun trip for few days 👨 but I did most of the driving after dark so I missed most of the landscape but I was surprised how many relatively big dairy farms are located along the Susquehanna River right south of Cooperstown. 🐄 I thought the valley was pretty narrow down there but it clearly has some good soils from the river valley. It was dusk when I was driving back tonight before the snow kicked in, and it was pretty with the snow covered hills along Interstate 88. I would have preferred to have more light to enjoy the scenery and maybe taken the back roads but sometimes you don’t get to choose the hours for a work trip. Still those hills are beautiful along 88, although I can only imagine how bad they’d be if everything was icy. The wind and sleet were bad enough on Tuesday and it was above freezing the whole time, although not by much.
I heard they had really bad ice in Albany yesterday but at least I was out of town so I missed that.β Just snow on and off where I was and some sleet on Tuesday there never stuck to the treated roads although viability at times was marginal especially on NY 28.
Next time I’m out that way again I’m going to have to go back to the Cooperstown dinner. 🍔 I really liked that place a lot, just because the food was good, it was small, quiet and non fancy. If we get a warm up in December I may head back out that way and visit Glimmerglass State Park then camp at Charles Baker State Forest. Maybe do it on a weekend when Hyde Hall 🏤is open for tours although I don’t know if it’s open in the winter as I doubt it has centralized heat. Historic sites are a lot of fun to tour.
I do find those small towns so charming, although I always wonder what I could do for a living in such a place. Camping trips put that way are fun and business trips to places like that are much more fun than the city. But then again I doubt I’d ever want to set roots down in a place like New York especially when you can just go south of the New York Pennsylvania border and have much more freedom and pay less for everything besides maybe gasoline, thanks to Governor Tom the Turkey and his Republican legislator that at least the state canned the turkey over Act 72 or whatever that big gas tax hike was. β½The hills of Northern Appalachia in the Pennsylvania Wild Region are so pretty, they really do extend north all the way up to Schoharie County when you look at the topography and land forms🗻.
I am very disappointed with the poor sound quality of the ear budsI bought very cheaply at Walmart about two months ago. I wouldn’t have bought such cheap ones but that’s all they had at the Cicero Walmart when I was there. 🎧 What I should do is see if I can find some decent looking ones on Ali Express, order a few of them for a buck or two and if I really like them plunk down like $15 and get a big box of them. I would never buy anything expensive from Ali Express but for simple things like basic electronics components it’s hard to beat Ali.
In four weeks on December 13 the sun will be setting at 4:22 pm,🌄 which is 9 minutes and 55 seconds earlier then tonight. Basically the earliest sunset of year or close to it. In 2017 on that day, we had snow, mostly cloudy skies and temperatures between 22 and 16 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 37 and 22 degrees. The record high of 58 degrees was set back in 1984.
Looking ahead, Thanksgiving 🦃 is in 1 week, Valentines Day β€οΈ is in 13 weeks, Ides of March β is in 4 months, Tax Day 💰 is in 5 months, Memorial Day Weekend Starts 🏕οΈ is in 27 weeks and Dog Days of Summer 🌻 is in 33 weeks.
