It was a good weekend. I enjoyed the quiet time in the Adirondacks, getting away from it all. βΊFriday night was wet setting up camp but as quickly as the rain came, the rain ended. The rain wasn’t that big of a deal 💦as I brought paper and wood for a fire and it was a remarkably warm evening in the low 70s – it was 80 before the front came through.
Apparently they had quite a few outages from the high winds that came through in Wevertown or North Creek🚒🚐 as I saw quite a few utility trucks going up that way but where I camped the wind howled a bit and there was a few strong gusts but no damage. Also today it looked like Wells had no power as there was a lot of generators running there. I wasn’t that worried about the wind as this is a pretty large campsite that is open and not far from the road.🚘🚙 Even if a devestating storm came through it would be unlikely to drop a tree on this big campsite and it wouldn’t have been a lot of cutting to get to road-and the trees around the campsite are pretty healthy so such damage would be unlikely. Despite the wind gusts it never got that cold last night – when I retired around 11 pm I was still in a t shirt 👕and soaking wet shorts but plenty warm. Kind of odd weather.
For breakfast both days I had a nice pan of eggs and sausage. 🍳I forgot how good it is on the big cast iron griddle. The night I arrived I hot dogs for dinner the other night was burritos 🍠for Cinco de Mayo.
Spent a lot of time reading and doing some writing. Then some time wandering the campsite and looking at the flags fluttering in the breeze.🏁 Such delightful weather on Saturday. Maybe I should have hiked up some big mountain but instead I ended up first getting on the wrong trail for Girard Sugarbush then ended up hiking the back way via the snowmobile tail from Griffin to Auger Falls, following the herd paths from snowmobile trail for some alternative views of the falls from the back. Lots of water going over the falls. Still a few places had snow but generally the snowmobile trail was in good shape and not too muddy. Enjoyed those different views.
Both nights the campfire was nice as was the entire experience in the wilderness.🌃 Having spent so much time over the past five and a half months in the city, I forgot what the wilderness was like. Sure NY 8 is noisy at times but it is still a long ways from the Cesspool. 💩Stars were a bit soft on Saturday night and as midnight approached it started to get cold.🌃 Stayed up to midnight listening to Cat Stevens with the lights dimmed so I could see the stars.
Kind of cloudy but warm on Sunday morning.β I took my time taking down camp, it was noon by the time I broke camp. But I was in no hurry to get back to the Cesspool. Did a little bit of fishing in the Sacandaga River🎣 although I didn’t have much luck as the water levels were quite high. Unpacking my gear, washing out the cooler now, taking a shower,🛀 getting ready to head out to my parents house for Sunday dinner.
Heading down Wells, the place I wanted to go fishing was full of utility trucks 🚒so I ended up going further down the road. The storm really didn’t impact me in the remote country up where I was camping besides a few good gusts of wind but apparently it reeked havoc on the electrical grid in the Adirondacks.β‘ Seems kind silly that they import all or at least 2/3rds of park’s electric power. You would think more people would be off grid up there. Water levels were very high for fishing, 🎣and then it started to rain. So I left and went home empty handed.
I do need to get the solar panel mounted on the truck cap as because with today’s yesterday’s sun, I could have fully recharged the accessory battery quite quickly just parked under the sun 🌞. I just have to get M6 bolts and drill out that steel bar I have. Maybe next weekend. And run the wires to the solar controller but that’s the easy part. I just got to devote a day now that weather is getting nicer, preferably before Memorial Day Weekend.
As previously noted, next Sunday is Mothers Day 👩β when the sun will be setting at 8:09 pm with dusk at 8:41 pm. On that day in 2017, we had rain, mist, cloudy skies and temperatures between 55 and 47 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 69 degrees. We hit a record high of 86 back in 2004.
