How Do You Clean Up A Contaminated River?

Interesting story about how they are treating the mine waste water that spilled over into the Cement Creek.

In short, they are adding caustic soda and lime to the mine settling ponds increase the pH to allow the metals to fall out of the water. Once the metals settle out, the water is brought close to neutral and can be released in a fairly pure form back into the environment.

August 14, 2015 morning

Good morning on this Friday morning. 71 degrees and mostly sunny with a little bit of haze and fair weather clouds. 85 with a chance of thunderstorms tomorrow. Saturday is almost a carbon copy of today, look for 86 degrees in the city and a somewhat greater chance of thunder and showers. Sunday is when the heat starts coming in, look for 85 degrees in mountains and possibly breaking 90 or more on Sunday. Monday and Tuesday will likely break 90 both days and will be hazy, hot, and humid.

Heading out of town on this hot weekend. The original plan has me going up to Wells and camping at White House and visiting the town beach in the day time — and also paddling along the flatwater section of the Main Branch. But I’m increasingly thinking of going up to Piseco-Powley Road, because I sure like those potholers. We will see. I’m all packed, and the choice only involves deciding which route I take once I get to Amsterdam this evening.
