Keuka Lake is the odd little duckling of the Finger Lakes; but, it is not the β€œugly” duckling by any stretch! Instead, Keuka Lake is beautifully unique and, though it shares much with its fellow β€œfingers,” it is set apart by its peculiar shape. Early settlers called this the β€œcrooked lake” because, unlike the long and sinuous, finger-shaped lakes, Keuka Lake is forked and shaped like a Y. The odd shape is one of its many unique features, but more pertinent to outdoor enthusiasts is that Keuka is the only Finger Lake that drains into another. This gave rise to the Outlet Trail.

Keuka Lake Outlet Gorge

The gorge where Keuka Lake Outlet drops between Kueka Lake and Seneca Lake is quite impressive, dropping despite the hills around it rising.

After you head west from Kueka Lake, you enter hill and hollow country like you see in Madison County. Much bigger hills and aggressive terrain elevation changes once you get west of here.

Back when AES Greenridge first went online, they dumped the coal ash in settling ponds along Seneca Lake. In later years, they, well the State of New York, decided it was a better to build a large coal ash landfill farther away from the lake and not dump it directly in the lake.
