Taken on Saturday August 15, 2020 at Catharine Creek WMA.Good afternoon! Happy Thanksgiving. ๐ฆ Hopefully you’re not one sick ๐คฎ turkey with COVID-19 and are enjoying your day. Rain and 53 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ There is a south breeze at 7 mph. ๐. The dew point is 49 degrees. There are 9 inches of snow on the ground. โ ๏ธTemperatures will drop below freezing at Sunday around 3 am. โ๏ธ
I am pretty good although I slept in ๐ด because I woke early and ended up listening to the news before falling back asleep again. ๐ป Then I got working on a bunch of different projects on my computer. I am trying to stay off the internet – the amount of doom scrolling ๐ one can do is a terrible waste of time.
Thanksgiving Day ๐ฆ will have a chance of showers, mainly before 4pm. Cloudy ๐ฆ, with a high of 54 degrees at 1pm. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 1st. Maximum dew point of 50 at 1pm. South wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 58 degrees. The record high of 67 was set in 1979. 9.6 inches of snow fell back in 2014.โ
As I noted yesterday heading out to the parents house for a socially distant Thanksgiving around tray tables. ๐จโ๐งโ๐งโ๏ธ๐ง๐ป๐๐ฝ๏ธ It will be fun to do before everything really shuts down as the pandemic really climbs the next few weeks. I’m already planning to work primarily from home this winter ๐ก๐ป, having figured out how to do it with my phone as a hot spot.
Solar noon ๐ was at 11:44 am with sun having an altitude of 26.3ยฐ from the due south horizon (-44.5ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐ starts at 3:42 pm with the sun in the southwest (234ยฐ). ๐ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (242ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:26 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 18 seconds with dusk around 4:56 pm, which is 31 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous ๐ Moon in the east-southeast (103ยฐ) at an altitude of 23ยฐ from the horizon, 252,133 miles away. ๐ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:32 pm. At sunset, look for rain showers ๐ง and temperatures around 54 degrees. The dew point will be 49 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 9 hours and 24 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 39 seconds over yesterday.
Tonight will have patchy fog. Otherwise, mostly cloudy , with a low of 42 degrees at 6am. ๐ซ 14 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 9th. Calm wind. In 2019, we had light rain in the evening, which became light snow by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 31 degrees. The record low of 8 occurred back in 1957.
I have the groceries I need and will be heading up to the Adirondacks tomorrow for a few days. โบ I do think I want to stop for hot coca โ on the way up there and maybe a few other supplies but I want to get up there pretty early as the sun sets early ๐ this time of year. Do some short hiking from camp, listen to a lot of podcasts and retire to bed ๐ fairly early. I could hot tent but I don’t think it neccesary for this weekend.
A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐ Saturday, a slight chance of showers before 10am. Partly sunny, with a high near 47. West wind 5 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. Sunday, sunny, with a high near 48. Typical average high for the weekend is 43 degrees.

On that day in 2019, we had rain showers, mostly cloudy, mild and temperatures between 52 and 35 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 38 degrees. We hit a record high of 64 back in 1966.
Good evening! Partly clear and 75 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. The dew point is 69 degrees. The muggy weather ends tomorrow around 6 pm. ๐ Definitely kind of muggy evening ๐ but I think that thunderstorm helped.
I went over to John Wolcott’s house ๐and was looking through his photo collection ๐ธ and documents ๐ some more. Some of those photos I found were quite neat. A pretty good thunderstorm โ rolled through right when I was leaving but it let up to almost nothing by the time I got on the highway ๐ but it still was a dark and rainy drive home with a few limbs down on the road. ๐At least I didn’t loose power where I live.
Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐, with a low of 66 degrees at 6am. Seven degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 69 at 10pm. Light south wind. A hot night, โข๏ธ I’m stripped down laying by the fan. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 54 degrees. The record low of 35 occurred back in 1940.
Before visiting John Wolcott I went to Walmart for supplies and food. ๐๐ง๐ฏ I bought a replacement hair trimmer as the one I had was getting plugged up and dull and lacked the shorter blades I need for cutting my hair shorter. โ I was going to order another set of cutting guides online but they were nearly the price of a new unit. I’ll have to see what parts I can salvage from the old one like maybe the power cord ๐ before tossing. ๐๏ธ Maybe some wire from the motor too.
If you don’t believe autumn is coming, ๐ฝ I saw a farm in Washington County was already chopping silage for the fall. ๐ฎ Dairy cattle with their high nutrition needs rely a lot on silage and unlike most other dairy commodities like high moisture corn or hay, silage is almost entirely grown on farms where it is fed. Too heavy and to risky for spoilage for it to be traded. Outside of hay its the biggest part of dairy cow feed. All of it has to be chopped before the first frost or it will be destroyed. Next Tuesday is September 1st, Labor Day is late this year.
Tonight will have a First Quarter ๐ Moon with 41% illuminated. At 10 PM, the moon was in the west-southwest (237ยฐ) at an altitude of 11ยฐ from the horizon, some 227,572 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. ๐ At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by February 13th. Buckle up for safety! ๐บ The moon will set in the west-southwest (249ยฐ) at 11:05 pm. The darkest hour is at 12:59 am, followed by dawn at 5:44 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:13 am in the east-northeast (74ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes Sunrise is one minute and 5 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ The golden hour ends at 6:51 am with sun in the east (81ยฐ). Tonight will have 10 hours and 30 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 41 seconds over last night.

Good evening on this final blog post of 2019 ! Cloudy and 31 degrees at the Cole Hill State Forest in Berne on this New Years Eve. โ We had a thunderstorm with some brief lightning and snow. โก โ It was windy and intense for about five minutes and then it got quiet. There is a west-southwest breeze at 9 mph. 🍃. There is about 4 inches of snow on the ground. โ The skies will clear tomorrow around noontime.
It’s hard to believe that New Years Day is only a few hours away and it will be 2020. 🎇 To think it’s already the twenties when not all that long ago it was year 2000 and I was back in High School. I’ll be waking tomorrow to a brand new decade. Although it’s already basically 11 o’clock now and I could if I wanted to stay up the next hour listening to a podcast until midnight. I was outside by the fire until 10:30 when a snow squall and the breeze made me decide to jettison the cold โ outside for a nice warm tent 🎪. Maybe I will stay up to midnight 🕛, I’m in no rush to take down camp as things with the dropping temperatures are likely to be frozen early in the day until the sun comes out. Simple breakfast of instant oatmeal 🍚 and coffee โ for breakfast tomorrow and then it’s just a 20 minute drive home.
Tonight will have a chance of snow showers, mainly before 10pm. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 25 degrees at 6am. Nine degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 7th. Even warmer back in the city. West wind 9 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. A few good gusts earlier for sure with that winter thunderstorm. The wind is a bit concerning with the ice on the trees being thrown or broken limbs but my campsite is relatively free of widow makers. 🍃 Chance of precipitation is 50%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. In 2018, we had light rain in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 27 degrees. I was up at Cherry Ridge last year and I left the night before because I was worried 😯 about the road being slippery when the ice turned to mud. In retrospect, should have done Moscow Hill horse 🐴 camp instead. The record low of -18 occurred back in 1970.
Tonight will have a Waxing Crescent 🌒 Moon with 31% illuminated. At dusk you’ll see the moon in the south (190ยฐ) at an altitude of 37ยฐ from the horizon, some 251,948 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. 🚀It was kind of a pretty moon tonight and it seems like my astrological calculations are right. The moon will set in the west-southwest (257ยฐ) at 10:06 pm. The darkest hour is at 12:00 am (the beginning of the decade), followed by dawn at 6:55 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:27 am in the east-southeast (121ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 25 seconds. Sunrise is 9 seconds later than yesterday. 🌄 The golden hour ends at 8:13 am with sun in the southeast (129ยฐ) at an altitude of 6ยฐ. Tonight will have 14 hours and 53 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 42 seconds over last night.
New Year’s Day 🎇 will have isolated snow showers after 8am. Partly sunny 🌦, with a high of 34 degrees at 1pm. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 22nd. West wind 15 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light drizzle by afternoon. The high last year was 53 degrees. The record high of 57 was set in 1966. 9.2 inches of snow fell back in 1961.โ
This year my New Year Resolution is to stay the course 🚢and continue to build a better life for myself. I want to keep saving money towards buying land and an off grid cabin. I might stay in New York for another decade but when the time comes, I want to be prepared. I’ll have to see if Big Red needs repairs and decide on my future of motoring 🏁 or if I should try a life with more biking and local adventures. Sure these winter camping adventures are kind of fun but motoring is so expensive and bad for both the environment and ones health. I probably also drink and eat too much unhealthy food while camping although this time โ I intentionally limited my drinking by packing less beer 🍻 being that I’m out in the real wilderness in the cold. That and I drunk most of it earlier in the week. โบ That said, this coming year I plan to spend many nights in the woods and maybe even so a bit more wilderness camping.
In four weeks on January 28 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (246ยฐ) at 5:04 pm,🌄 which is 31 minutes and 28 seconds later then tonight. In a little more then sixteen weeks, summer will be coming to a conclusion and we will be looking at autumn. How fast things change.
But in the next six weeks, look for the weather to moderate with later sunsets, which will start slowing as we reach the latest sunset of the year at 8:37 PM, which occurs on Saturday June 24th through Wednesday June 28th. Dusk isn’t until around 9:12 PM on those days. 8 PM sunsets return on August 12th, then 7:30 sunset on August 31st.
The average high climbs until Thursday July 13th, when it will stick around 83 degrees until Thursday, July 27th when it will fall down to 82 degrees and slow descend through the 80s until Thursday, August 24th when the average high will be only 79.
