Saturday Morning at Whitehouse
Just a few thoughts and a walk around of my campsite, the first day camping at a campsite a little ways from Whitehouse on West River Road in Wells.

West River Road currently goes 7 miles from Wells to the old ghost town of Whitehouse, complete with two historic chimneys and several campsites. A scenic area, with views of the West Branch of Sacanadaga River and Dugaway Mountain. There is an old cementary located up there, along with one of the biggest pedestrian suspension bridges in Adirondacks. The Northville-Placid Trail also runs about a 1/4 mile from Whitehouse, and is frequently accessed from the Whitehouse Parking Area. This comparison shows what the old ghost town looked, before the ghosts and campers took over.
This past weekend I camped about 1 mile from the wilderness boundary and 1 mile from Whitehouse on West River Road. This well maintained road has been proposed to be closed for at least 40 years, but it's still a nice drive to many popular campsites.
The weekdays come back around once again. One weekend left until Memorial Day Weekend. Next weekend, thinking of heading out to Schoharie County to do some fishing and camping, but that plan could evolve depending on the weather.
This past week on Saturday, I volunteered for several hours at Albany’s Tulipfest for Save the Pine Bush. It was a hot and sticky Saturday. Then hopped in the Climate Controlled pickup, then headed north. The leaves are certainly coming out in Albany, but not so much as you head north in the Adirondacks. Another week they should be out pretty good though.
I had read that West River Road was open. Apparently it’s not, past the start of the Forest Preserve. The town portion of the road is open, so if you want to go fishing, that’s good. But if your planning on camping at Whitehouse, like I was, your going to have to wait a few more weeks, assuming that the wilderness advocate types don’t beat you to the punch and get the road permanently barricaded.
Ended up camping on NY 8. Not at Fox Lair, but actually a ½ mile down the road at the campsite I camped at in December. I actually was originally planning to camp at this site, if I got the .22 rimfire that I almost bought last week, until I found out how difficult getting ammunition would locally. Behind this campsite, there is a fairly clear woods, and maybe a ¼ mile back there is a large hill that would make for safe backstop for shooting. It was fine, because it was relatively late that I got back to the campsite
Maybe I will just get a pellet gun to start out with. I’ve heard a good air rifle can be used for 90% or more of the uses a 22 ca n be used for, especially at short range for things like squirrels and rabbits.
But I think a 22 rifle would be far more useful and accurate, especially if I get more into trapping. I liked the review of the Remington 597, but then read the downsides like the plastic stock flexing and jamming issues and are now looking more at the classic Ruger 10/22.
Some of the pellet guns or air rifles are pretty good now, and ammunition is not too difficult to get. That said, I think the whole 22 LR ammunition shortage can’t last for too much longer. People can hoard only so much ammo and the “feared” Obama is becoming a lame duck. I guess I could go shooting in Schoharie County this weekend if I wanted to.
Fox Lair, if the site is available in November, might be real good for trapping muskrat. There are some good muddy banks up along the East Branch up there, and while I haven’t really gone looking for muskrat dens, they must be there. The water depth there was more then adequate for drowning sets.
The wood was pretty wet from all the recent rain. Plus it’s kind of swampy back by the campsite. Which made it open for shooting, but it made the firewood I collected burn For the first hour or two, the campfire did a lot of smoldering and smoking as the wood dried out, but at least it was warm out. Kind of stunk too – because I got the fire started with a bag of Styrofoam plates and other burnable trash I brought up there – and there wasn’t a big hot fire to quickly burn it up like normally.
In my effort to be green, I did pick up a fair bit of litter in the woods and either burnt it took it home. I found an pickup truck tire and an ATV tire dumped back there. I know tires aren’t free to get rid of at the dump, but people shouldn’t dump them on state land. I don’t litter, but removing tires or large hunks of unburnable junk from state land is a bit more then I’m willing to do. I filed a report with a Conservation Officer, so hopefully it will get cleaned up soon.
Hiked back to Kirby Pond. It was a lot farther back then I had originally expected, although the trail was easy to follow, as somebody had recently flagged it. I didn’t bring any fishing gear with me – forgot it in my truck – but I was talking to somebody who was fishing out there, and said the lake was pretty sterile.
Did drop a line into the Sacanadaga River south of the dam in Wells, which is always packed with fisherman. Left empty handed. But probably should have spent more time there. If West River Road had been open, I would have camped there, then fished in the West Branch, and probably had better luck.
So that was the weekend was.
Everything from the Save the Pine Bush Tulip Booth, to my continuing frustration over getting a 22 with ammo shortage, to finding out West River Road is still closed, to some time fishing, to some camping near Fox Lair, to smoky fires and nice nights, to visiting Kirby Pond.

An interactive map and listing of the 280 peaks over 3,000 feet elevation listed in the Open Street Map database for New York State.
East Branch of Sacanadaga River, NY 8 – Roughly 10 campsites along NY 8. These are easily accessed throughout the year, as the road is plowed except when the snow banks are high during the winter. East Branch is not good for fishing due to wide variance in water levels, however there are some nice pools in sections of river for summer swimming. Lots of road noise. Some of the sites have cell service. Nearby locations include Cod Pond, East Branch Trail and Kibby Pond Trail.
Edick Road – There are a handful of very hidden campsites off of Edick Road. This road may be closed to vehicles due to wash outs autumn 2019, but worth a walk to explore this area.
Fawn Lake – A 1/2 mile hike back to a scenic lake ringed by primitive campsites outside of Lake Pleasant. Two miles beyond it is the scenic Willis Vly, which doesn’t have developed campsites but it’s remote wilderness where you might see a Moose or other wildlife.
Garnet Lake – Tent sites, some with drive-up access along the lake. No cell service, much of the upper road here is not maintained in the winter. Popular in the summer, no cell service.
Good Luck Lake – Scenic lake off of the West Branch Sacanadaga River that is ringed with tent sites that can be walked in from the Good Luck Lake parking area area or paddled in.
Hope Falls Road – Two or three campsites along the end of Hope Falls Road, some are drive-in only tent sites. Near the Tenant Creek Falls Trail. No cell service. Open June to autumn snowfall.
Harrisburg Road – There is a set of very rustic designated campsites along the rough Harrisburg Road past Harrisburg Lake. Somewhat near Crane Mountain, a couple mile hike to and Wilcox Lake. No cell service.
Lester Flow and Cheney Pond – Scenic lake that is popular for paddling. The 1/2 mile road down from Boreas Road as of June 2020 is closed due to washouts. Tent sites exist along the lake, along with one drive-to site on the road down there.
Mason Lake – Small lake located about 10 miles north of Speculator and 5 miles south of Lewey Lake that has several tent and drive-in campsites along it’s shore. Good to fair cell service here. Nice to hear loons, one of the best bass ponds in the area.
North Lake Reservoir – There are roughly 15 campsites on the east shore of North Lake Reservoir. Popular place in the summer, regularly staffed by conservation students. Noise from motorboats. No cell service. Nice if you want to camp right on water, hear loons at night..
Northwood Club Road – In Minerva, this road crosses the Boreas River and has several roadside campsites, and passes by Huntley Pond, the NL Tahawus Railroad (which can be hiked to the Boreas River at Hudson River), and the Blue Ledges on the Hudson tailhead.
Perkins Clearing – Conservation easement lands. Good to fair cell service here. Great place for hunting and wildlife observation as it’s mixed timber country. Near Mason Lake, Speculator, Pillsbury Mountain and Cedar Lakes.
Piseco-Powley Road – A dozen campsites along a 13 mile road with short hikes including Big Alderbed, House Pond, Sand Lake and the popular Potholers/Brayhouse Brook waterfall for swimming. As of June 2020, road is closed in Stratford/Fulton County portion, road is open north of Potholers/Brayhouse Brook (access via Piseco). Very limited cell service here.

Rockwood State Forest – Three campsites along the end of Church Road which can be accessed by driving past the cemetery in the hamlet. Scenic lake, good fishing. Cell service available, but bring a trash bucket and gloves as litter can be a problem. Nice trails to stroll around in the old Rockwood Estate.
Stewart Landing – There are four campsites on a rough road that loops off of Stewart Landing Road. Popular area in the summer, Canada Lake is great for paddling and informal swimming. Also consider hiking back to Hilderbrandt Vly and Glassgow Lake from here. Moderate to poor cell service here.
Vanderwhacker Road -Five or six campsites exist along Vanderwhacker Road, which can be muddy in the spring and icy in late autumn. Additional designates campsites exist near where NY 28N crosses the Vanderwhacker River. Near the trail to the Vanderwhacker Firetower, No cell service.
White House, Wells – A grouping of 5 or 6 campsites at the end of White House in West River Road. Scenic area, old camp, with fields and a chimney. Campsites are kind of close together, not a wilderness experience. Near the North Country Placid Trail, lots of blueberries in mid-summer. No cell service. Open June to autumn snowfall.
Woodhull Lake Reservoir – Off of NY 28 in McKeevers, about 10 miles south of Old Forge. Not only is this beautiful reservoir to paddle, there are some campsites along the shore, with drive-to campsites along Wolf Lake Landing Road which leads to it. Part of Wolf Lake Landing Road is erroded, but other parts are fresh stone-dust. It’s remote wilderness but there good cell service in mcuh of the area.
Good evening! Cloudy and 67 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ There is a east breeze at 5 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 50 degrees. The skies will clear Tuesday around 1 am.
For all the commotion earlier it looks like the fire 🚒 is out or whatever all the emergency vehicles were reporting too. Maybe I’m a bit paranoid about the plastics plant blowing up but I’m well aware of toxic chemicals they use at SABIC plastics and it sure seemed like a lot of emergency response heading that way. 👮 Probably safer at home at any rate and who knows their is rain pushing this way shortly.
It’s not like I sat home and eat twinkies all day. 🍛 I did have a bowl of tuna fish salad for dinner but it probably has a quarter pound of peas and broccoli besides the noodles, mayonnaise and tuna fish. 🐠 I did hold back on the mayonnaise a bit.
Walking out to Five Rivers this afternoon was nice. 🐸 Spent several hours studying nature with the binoculars my parents lent me. It’s really fascinating to watch the birds up close and even just study squirrel and chipmunk behavior. Next up I need to get a better knowledge of bird 🐦 species – I know the common ones but especially the migratory birds are a bit of a mystery to me. I thought about Black Creek Marsh at dusk but I decided to hold off because it was getting late – after seven o’clock when I started walking home from Five Rivers.
To be honest, my plan for visiting Black Creek Marsh at dusk 🌆 wasn’t just for bird watching 🐦 or photos 📷 but in part because I was curious how effective the Permethrin would be in really buggy weather – that is with DEET on the face and arms. People swear by it and while I haven’t found any ticks on me yet and saw a mosquitoes collapse after crawling on my jeans 👖 I’m not totally convinced of the hype. I did spray my hat yesterday too. Unlike DEET I might also be able to safely apply it to the hammock which would help with the bugs when I’m lying there.

Tomorrow will have showers likely, mainly before 9am. Mostly cloudy 🌦, with a high of 65 degrees at 3pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 2nd. Maximum dew point of 50 at 10am. Calm wind becoming north around 5 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 73 degrees. The record high of 94 was set in 2017. 2.2 inches of snow fell back in 2002.❄
In four weeks on June 14 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (303°) at 8:34 pm,🌄 which is 21 minutes and 28 seconds later then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had partly cloudy skies and temperatures between 68 and 53 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 78 and 56 degrees. The record high of 96 degrees was set back in 1892.
So the Gas Up tractor and agricultural festival is canceled for June. 🚜 I think that was kind of expected during the pandemic although they’re considering trying to reschedule for mid August. Could be hot then I’m thinking though. Assuming it’s even an option then – they didn’t seem too hopeful. 😔
Looking ahead, Strawberry Moon 🌕 is in 3 weeks and Fathers Day 👨 is in 4 weeks.
🇺🇸🦅Only 5 days remain until the start of Memorial Day Weekend!🦅🇺🇸
I was doing some reading on the internet and found out that the lower part of Piseco Powley Road is still not fully rebuilt from the October 2019 storm and that the road is closed. ⛺ So I guess that’s out for the weekend. Hopefully soon though they’ll finish the rebuild and open the gates all the way. There are other options but with the nice weather expected and the state campgrounds closed they’ll fill up quickly.
So the original plan of delaying my Memorial Day Weekend for one week is back on the agenda. 🔙 That’s fine, it gives me more time to pack and potentially opens up more options as there will be fewer people camping, especially if I drive up Thursday evening or Friday morning on a non holiday weekend. I never did a spring trip this year with a long weekend so I have the time.
Come June for example, it’s likely Perkins Clearing Road and West River Road and White House in Wells will open. 🚧 But also I expect I could get that campsite up on Pumpkin Hollow Road when on a non holiday weekend. If it’s hot though it would be nice to be able to walk to water. Betty Brook or Duck Pond are good options in Schoharie County. 💭
East Branch Sacandaga River is fine but it’s noisy 🐠 and the river isn’t that great for fishing due to the fluctuating water levels. A drought in summer – as was a case a few years ago can leave the river with only a few inches of water. Right now, Cherry Ridge and Finger Lakes National Forest are closed for camping.
Maybe Moose River will be my summer vacation if Piseco Powley Road ⛺ is not rebuilt. While I assume ny mid summer that the Finger Lakes National Forest will reopen for camping if the pools and beaches aren’t open I’m sure if I’d want to do summer vacation there.
Other options include the Allegheny and Green Mountain National Forest. 🗻 The later is open but who knows if the current limits on out of state visitors will be lifted by summer. That Grout Pond beach is fun and some of sites along Forest Road 73 not only have good sun ☀ for solar but also cell reception.
