May 31, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Memorial Day ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ ! Thanks to all that have served, whether it was for a noble cause, a paycheck, or because our government leaders where foolish war mongers. Five weeks to Hottest Time of the Year ๐Ÿ˜…. That said, after a cold and rainy past few days, the heat machine cranks up by this mid-week with hot and muggy weather. At least I have the fan out. But for now, cloudy, damp and 45 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜” There is a north-northwest breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ.

Yesterday, I spent most of the afternoon continuing to dig through the remaining increasingly moldy remaining files. ๐Ÿ“ We’ve pretty much reached the end of wet stuff, and things have mostly dried out. Some old newspaper articles literally fell apart and became mush — wouldn’t have been bad to toss in a compost pile with some manure to turn into dirt. But most of the papers themselves were salvaged ๐Ÿ“„ although we found more wet stuff then expected at the end and kind of ran low on screens to dry things out. My hat’s definitely off to the firefighters, demolition workers and city officials ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿš’ ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ’ผ ๐Ÿ‘ท that made it possible to recover so much. There are still some good people in the government. And the team of volunteers including Lynne Jackson and Dan Van Riper who have been working for over a week now to save things. I’m going back over this afternoon for another session of drying and salvaging materials, although after today I am going to be pretty busy and long for work, ๐Ÿข and I’m hoping to get out of town before work on Friday. ๐Ÿ•

Memorial Day will have showers likely, mainly before 1pm. Patchy fog before 7am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy with more sun late ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 65 degrees at 4pm. 10 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 28th. Maximum dew point of 49 at 12pm. Northwest wind 6 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 65 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 2013.

In a little bit, certainly by around 8 AM or so I am going to walk out to Five Rivers. ๐Ÿฆ Probably the trails are just one big mosh pit after the rain, but there should be a lot of robins out. With so much rain lately, I haven’t had a chance to do much walking or time outdoors. Last weekend I hiked Bennett Hill and I’ve done my morning walks, but not many evening walks. ๐Ÿ‘ฃ It’s been tough with the weather for sure. โ›ˆ Maybe there will be a lot of wildlife out after all the rain we’ve had later. Then I’m going to come home, catch a bus downtown again, more file drying ๐Ÿ“‚ and then out to folks house for Memorial Day/Sunday dinner. ๐Ÿ” Might be nice enough to sit outside.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:54 pm with sun having an altitude of 69.3ยฐ from the due south horizon (-1.5ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:44 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (295ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (302ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:27 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 23 seconds with dusk around 8:59 pm, which is 48 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:44 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 59 degrees. The dew point will be 48 degrees. What a big change from what we’ve had lately. There will be a northwest breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 5 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 18 seconds over yesterday. Days are getting long now, for a few more weeks.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 46 degrees at 4am. Seven degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 10th. Northwest wind around 5 mph becoming light and variable in the evening. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 41 degrees. The record low of 35 occurred back in 1945.

Tomorrow at lunch time ๐Ÿฅช I need to go to the store and get food. ๐Ÿ›’ I am working from home on Tuesday but Wednesday and Thursday I will be at the office downtown ๐Ÿข and I expect late nights in the office so I’m not going to have a lot of free time. Friday morning before work I plan to head north and work from Spectulator.

Going to be a nice, hot and humid summer weekend. ๐ŸŠ Saturday, a chance of showers. Mostly sunny, with a high near 85. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 64 at 9am. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 88. Maybe 90? Maximum dew point of 65 at 7pm. I would say, that’s very much summer weather. Hot and humid. ๐Ÿ˜“ Typical average high for the weekend is 77 degrees.

My therapy session ๐Ÿ‘จโ€โš•๏ธ has been postponed one week from Friday, so this week I can get at least in theory in get up to the Adirondacks and work from Lake Pleasant on Friday and then camp up in the Speculator-area. I am a bit tired of being up there, but having the internet at the library and the nice lake to sit down by and work, sure makes it’s worthwhile. ๐Ÿ• I want to do Piseco-Powley Road and potholers, but i think I will wait a few weeks until the legislative session is over — supposedly on June 10th, and then take a long weekend when I can be totally off-the-grid and not be doing work emails or anything else work related. ๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ Where work can be the furthest from the mind. Plus in two or three weeks the water temperature should be much warmer. I plan to take off a fair amount of time this summer, and maybe I can do some remote work too, although I kind of hate the mixing of work and pleasure, even if it means ore gets done.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Summer ๏ธโ›ฑ๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 8:36 pm with dusk at 9:11 pm. On that day in 2020, we had hot, mostly sunny and temperatures between 92 and 69 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 81 degrees. We hit a record high of 97 back in 1938.

Tired Dog

May 30, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Sunday. Two weeks to Fathers Day ๐Ÿ‘จ . The unofficial end of black fly season, although I tend to think they’re around until July 4th, although come late June it’s mostly mosquitos then July comes around and things aren’t so bad. Rain and 47 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜” There is a north breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ.

I wanted to walk around to Five Rivers ๐Ÿฆ this morning before the rain, but it’s already raining and I did not get up early enough apparently. ๐Ÿ˜ด I’ve been bad this weekend about getting started, after getting up at 6:30 AM each day last week, so I could go for my morning walk before heading downtown on the bus. ๐ŸšŒ Memorial Day Weekend will continue to be cold, damp and rainy but the skies will clear tomorrow around 5 pm in time for picnics, although you’ll definitely want a long sleeve shirt. ๐ŸŒญ ๐Ÿ”

Today will rain, mainly after 10am. ๐ŸŒง High of 50 degrees at 4pm. 25 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 28th. North wind around 9 mph. It’s already become a very wet day, and it looks like it only will get wetter. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 78 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 1987.

Yesterday, I was over at the apartment where they are storing the recovered documents for John Wolcott. ๐Ÿ“œ Didn’t find a lot of interesting things, more papers and photos, mostly personal stuff. Important for him, but it wasn’t a lot of great historic value we found yesterday. But I’ve been mostly looking through photos that we’ve been saving by soaking, separating, and drying. ๐Ÿ–ผ ๐Ÿ‘ƒ At least the files don’t stink as much yet, although we are starting to run the clock with the damp weather ๐Ÿ’ฆ and mildew starting to grow on the wet documents. I’m going to head back there later today.

I was worried that the Fairchild Aerial Photos of Albany Pine Bush in the 1920s were misplaced, but Lynne was able to find them. I really want to get a high resolution scan of them, maybe because I’m a bit biased towards them with my love old aerial photos. ๐ŸŒฒ But they can also really tell a story about the Albany Pine Bush and world long gone. The USGS photos taken in the early to mid-1950s for stereographic mapping of the land for topographic maps is great, but it’s from the 1950s, and a lot of land use change occurred earlier then the 1950s in Pine Bush. ๐Ÿ”

While I should have done this a long time ago, ๐Ÿ“ธ I finally took high resolution photos of my guns and their serial numbers, along with various diplomas and certification documents including my truck title an birth certificate, ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐ŸŽ“ and family photos, and put them in an encrypted file both on my laptop and for off-site storage. Just with my ordinary camera. ๐Ÿ“„ This way I figure if I am ever a victim of a natural disaster, be it fire, riot, tornado, flood, I’ll have my photos and important documents backed up, with all the numbers and key information. ๐Ÿ’พ Sure, I’ll probably have to get a new copy of my birth certificate, et. certera at some point but when you have the information it’s easier to get. Data storage is cheap, and while I don’t do the whole cloud thing, โ˜๏ธ off-site is important in case the building I live in is destroyed or my laptop is stolen or damaged. ๐Ÿ”ซ Likewise, with the guns it’s a lot easier to file a police report if you have the serial numbers and photos. Salvaging all those charred documents ๐Ÿ”ฅ really makes me want to be a lot more careful at backing up everything. Plus I’ve purged a ton of paper documents that aren’t relevant anymore. ๐Ÿ—‘ I need to tackle the crawl space and get rid of some worn out clothes and other things this summer. ๐Ÿ‘š โ™ป๏ธ

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:54 pm with sun having an altitude of 69.2° from the due south horizon (-1.6° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:44 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (294°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (301°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:26 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 23 seconds with dusk around 8:59 pm, which is 50 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:43 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 48 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 4 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 23 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will rain, mainly before 4am. ๐ŸŒง Low of 47 degrees at 9pm. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 4th. North wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 46 degrees. The record low of 34 occurred back in 1961.

Tomorrow, which is Memorial Day will have a chance of rain before 7am, then a chance of showers, mainly between 7am and 3pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 61. ๐ŸŒฆ Northwest wind 6 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

I had higher hopes about Memorial Day ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ but it seems like the bad weather will continue until Tuesday when it will get nice. I can work from home on Tuesday, and while I have to work in the office on Wednesday and Thursday, I’m thinking of working from the Speculator area on Friday and Monday, just because there is that great library there and decent places to camp in the area. ๐Ÿ• I am going to hold off on the Potholers for this weekend, although looks plenty warm. I could go for a swim at Speculator Beach.  ๐ŸŠ‍โ™€๏ธ Not sure if I will bring my kayak — my initial feeling is no to that, because I will need the solar power to work. ๐Ÿ›ถ

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Fathers Day ๐Ÿ‘จ when the sun will be setting at 8:34 pm with dusk at 9:08 pm. On that day in 2020, we had cold but otherwise partly sunny day and temperatures between 66 and 46 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 79 degrees. We hit a record high of 94 back in 1892. Back before my time, and I suspect yours too.

Grass Along Lake

May 28, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Memorial Day Weekend ๐Ÿ•๏ธ ! Mostly cloudy and 49 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a north breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Blue skies to the south, which is odd considering the rain due later. The skies will clear Monday around 1 am.

It looks like today is going to be the start of the coldest Memorial Day Weekend โ„ since at least 2013, that year when I was camping ๐Ÿ• at Moose River Plains and it was so wet and muddy. Between the black flies ๐Ÿœ and everything else I am not convinced that Memorial Day Weekend is the best weekend ever to get out of town.

I am doing my morning walk ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป early this morning fueled by the French Toast ๐Ÿณ and then will take a shower ๐Ÿšฟ and catch the bus down to the office ๐Ÿข. I decided to work downtown today as frankly I should be working more in the office as the pandemic is over. ๐Ÿ–ฅ Plus my work computer is so much faster than the Hotspot and VPN, save bandwidth etc. Plus it’s going to be a cold and rainy day ๐ŸŒง๏ธ and I’m heading over to the Dan’s vacant apartment to continue with the salvage effort of John’s water ๐Ÿ’ฆ and smoke ๐Ÿ”ฅ damaged files ๐Ÿ“‚. Maybe next Friday I’ll work by Lake Pleasant.

Today will rain likely, mainly after 4pm. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 56 degrees at 2pm. 19 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 9th. North wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. It was humid. The high last year was 83 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 2016. There was a dusting of snow in 1902.โ„

I think I left my rain โ˜” coat at my parents house, but I have my umbrella and I’m hopeful it won’t be raining too hard at the end of the day. I told Lynne and Dan that I would be over this afternoon to continue salvaging John’s papers. Not going to be great weather for drying things ๐Ÿ“„ but hopefully the weekend will be quite dry. I’m hoping I won’t get totally soaked on the way over.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:54 pm with sun having an altitude of 68.9ยฐ from the due south horizon (-1.9ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:42 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (294ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (301ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:24 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 22 seconds with dusk around 8:57 pm, which is 52 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:41 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 49 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 15 hours and one minute of daytime, an increase of one minute and 29 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will rain. ๐ŸŒง Low of 44 degrees at 4am. 10 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 29th. North wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. In 2020, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It became very sticky as the night progressed. It got down to 70 degrees. The record low of 34 occurred back in 1956.

Tomorrow will rain likely, mainly before 9am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 53 degrees at 5pm. 22 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 4th. North wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. It was humid. The high last year was 89 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 1931.

I might go out to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center ๐Ÿฆ later in the evening tomorrow but it all depends on the weather and if I should go back in the city to continue drying papers and photos ๐Ÿ“ธ. We did find we could salvage most photos with enough water abs soaking to seperate them out. I want to see if I can get digital photos of my valuable documents and other things this weekend so I can have an off site backup which could prove valuable as I learned from the fire recovery efforts. ๐Ÿ“„ Digital data is so much easier to back up, store and keep safe than the paper records of yesteryear.

Looking ahead to Sunday, a chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 59. ๐ŸŒฅ Northeast wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. Typical average high for the weekend is 75 degrees. Not this year. Definitely a bad weather weekend for Memorial Day Weekend.

But Memorial Day looks slightly better. Mostly sunny, with a high near 71. ๐ŸŒž But still cold. At least it will be nice for the Memorial Day Parades. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ I’m hoping the next weekend will be nicer but right now it looks unsettled.

Looking ahead, there are 7 weeks until Last Sunset After 8:30 PM ๐ŸŒ† with dusk at 9:04 pm. On that day in 2020, we had rain and temperatures between 80 and 65 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 84 degrees. We hit a record high of 97 back in 1900.

Hills Above Sherburne

May 26, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Hump Day! ๐Ÿช In the era of front wheel drive cars does anybody celebrate Hump Day anymore? ๐Ÿš˜ Getting ready to catch the bus ๐Ÿš downtown for a day working in the old office ๐Ÿข. Partly sunny and 68 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒค๏ธ There is a south breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 63 degrees. A day of sweltering summer heat ended by violent โ›ˆ and than a good stretch cool, low humidity weather although the Friday going into the Memorial Day Weekend looks like a good soaker. โ˜”

Today will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 3pm. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 88 degrees at 2pm. 14 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 65 at 10am. South wind 8 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. Going to be a hot late May. Summer is coming although even though with the new climate normals that’s pretty toasty, with the mugginess. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 90 degrees. The record high of 94 was set in 2010. There was a dusting of snow in 1953.โ„

While the air conditioning is on the bus, โ„ it feels hot and muggy with the suit and tie with the mask.๐Ÿ˜ท I can’t believe how uncomfortable wearing the muzzle truly is this morning. I wish they would lower the air conditioning even more on the bus but I’m not sure if that’s something the drivers control. I haven’t minded masks so much but now that I have to wear them going back and forth to work, a lot of days a work, it really isn’t that much fun. ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐Ÿ’ผ Maybe it’s not so bad when you are not in a shirt and tie for work.

I pulled the window shades down and got the fan set up so when I get home, although I might not get home until late, especially if I go over to Dan Van Riper’s place to continuing sorting and drying out John Wolcott’s papers. ๐Ÿ“œ I know that Assemblyman Jack McEneny and some others is going to be continuing working over there today, but I can’t do this now because I have to work. But maybe this afternoon after work, although speaking to Dan one of issues is that none of the buildings they’re working in lacks light fixtures.

I am still a bit troubled about what I saw salvaging historical materials from Mr. Wolcott’s house prior to demolition. ๐Ÿšช It’s just a reminder how temporary and disposable all things are around us all. While I wondered when that fire ripped through the street in 2018, if things would be lost, it took another 3 years before a devastating fire destroyed much of what was in the house. Last night, I went out and bought a few SanDisk flash drives, so I could start backing up my files off site from my apartment in case of fire, tornado, building collapse, or other permanent evacuation. ๐Ÿ’พ You can say it won’t happen to you, but then when you smell that awful smell of a burnt house and a disjointed burnt out building, it seems to really hit. ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿš’ I know a lot of people store their files in the cloud, but I don’t have internet as an option, so I’ve been storing things on an external hard drive, which is good except if the building you are storing things is destroyed. I haven’t heard if Lynne has been able to recover the files.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:53 pm with sun having an altitude of 68.6° from the due south horizon (-2.3° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:41 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (294°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (301°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:22 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 21 seconds with dusk around 8:55 pm, which is 54 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:39 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 79 degrees. The dew point will be 61 degrees. There will be a west breeze at 9 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 58 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 35 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have showers and thunderstorms likely before midnight, then scattered showers. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 58 degrees at 4am. Six degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around June 16th. Maximum dew point of 62 at 6pm. West wind 5 to 9 mph becoming light. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies. It was humid. It got down to 68 degrees. The record low of 30 occurred back in 1969.

Cool this weekend with temperatures running 10 degrees below normal but otherwise sunny. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 64. Maximum dew point of 36 at 7am. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 67. Maximum dew point of 42 at 8pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 75 degrees.

I am not sure what my weekend will look like. ๐Ÿ’ญ I have a feeling I might have to work this weekend, so I am less inclined to go to Adirondacks because working and camping ๐Ÿ• is less fun then being totally off grid and doing lots of drinking and hanging out. Plus I really want a hot weekend I can spend down at the Potholers doing said things without the crowds. And as we get further into the June, the black flies taper off.

Looking ahead, there are 7 weeks until National Nude Day ๐Ÿ‘ฑ when the sun will be setting at 8:31 pm with dusk at 9:05 pm. On that day in 2020, we had mostly sunny, thunderstorm and temperatures between 84 and 67 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 84 degrees. We hit a record high of 99 back in 1995.

I need this flag for camping

It’s already under six inch of dirt in the Rennselear Landfill

It’s already under six inch of dirt in the Rennselear Landfill

And all I can taste and smell this evening is like smoldering garbage in a burning barrel. That kind of yuck.

Interviewing Albany Historian John Wolcott for a documentary

This morning I started out my day trying to recover whatever historical documents I could from John Wolcott’s house which was severely burned and roof collapsed after a Sunday evening fire that jumped from a neighboring house, turning John’s archives in his attic into a raging inferno and leading to an emergency demolition at noontime today when the big diesel trucks lined up on Sheridan Street waiting to haul away the pulverized remains of 344 and 346 Sheridan Avenue rapidly removed by Di’Tonnonio and Sons’ Excavator. Another Dutch building pulverized with all its contents and covered with dirt at the Dunn Landfill in Rennselear.

I think we recovered a lot. Most of John’s files I had been going through over the past five years were saved, as much of the water damage occurred in other parts of the house. The Fort Orange and DASNY files were safe. Certainly the best of it wasn’t soaked. All the stuff upstairs was lost, as the fire was fed by decades of dry paper consisting of maps, photocopies, books and original research. Anything I hadn’t seen was lost and probably at this point with his failing memory is forever gone. That said, so much of it before the fire was faded photostat documents and with notes disjointed and memories faded its not clear how much was worth saving even before the fire. Even some of the fabled files that John Wolcott always talked about probably never existed or where just exaggerations of facts after talking with Jim Lafferty. It’s quite possible that the Democratic machine never wanted them found, although who really cares about the machinations of Dan O’Connell and Jim Coyne in 2020. Neither are likely to go to prison in the coming years even if they stole tax money and ran booze and prostitution rings more than a half century ago.

The city fire department retrieved a great deal of momentums that John and Linda had on their list to keep. Some of those boxes and books they hauled out where heavy with water. Very professional and caring. They also retrieved some of the files I had sorted, later on we were able to sneak in the back door and grab some more, along with a few other files that remain a mystery. The fire department grabbed the hard drive and computer so hopefully we can salvage the data off of that. Albany Historian and former Assemblyman John McEneny helped us salvage some materials and had some good ideas on how to save them. We are trying to dry what we can, they may take the papers to a freeze drier to salvage them. We stored them in a vacant apartment, they were going to figure out how to preserve later on.

One thing I couldn’t believe was the stink from the fire. I was prepared to go in the building, I knew it would be wet, smokey smelling. I wore old clothes, knowing that I would be covered with soot and ash by the time I had to leave – and planned to take a shower when I got home but I had no idea how pungent the smell would be, how I would track it home on my boots and my clothes. Despite taking a shower and washing my hands it’s still on them, it’s in my mouth and nose. Most just from handling documents and my brief run on doors to fetch more. It’s like everything had a sticky tar residue from the fire that reeked of smoldering plastic garbage. I wasn’t in the building more than five minutes and while I handled wet sooty boxes, I couldn’t believe how much rubbed off me.

Linda was very concerned about retrieving clothing and things like makeup from the building. That seemed so trivial to me when history was about to be forever pulverized and buried in the Dunn Landfill within a few hours. Her sister was very concerned about that but I couldn’t imagine even after washing you would want to wear any of the clothes. Certainly the fire department didn’t. Russell salvaged some of the bags of clothes but they were so wet and nasty. I thought it silly when there might have been more historical documents to save. Minutes before history lost, rather than trying to sneak in and save wet and terribly pungent clothing. Maybe it’s more salvageable then wet historical documents, and it’s better than it all going to the Rennselear Landfill this afternoon but nothing was historic or not easily purchased with money from the insurance settlement. Trying to save the new chair or chest freezer they had was pointless.

Truth be told, probably a lot more could have been salvaged from the landfill had we had a bit more time. The downstairs while water damaged especially in the back had very little fire damage. The first floor was in little risk of collapse even though the top floor was a mess. Probably in a rural or even suburban town the burned building would have sat for a while before demolition. And ultimately if labor was cheaper and material more expensive like 50 years ago, they could have saved the bottom floor while replacing the top. Assuming that they could get rid of that smell. It was so pungent! But today, the landfill is king, buildings are disposable, used for a few years to be thrown away like everything else.

They talk about all this green stuff and feel good recycling of tin cans and plastic bottles in front of every suburbanites house. But the truth is laid bare after a house fire when everything is pulverized and hauled to the landfill whether it was damaged by fire or water or not. Momentums are considered salvageable but nothing else is. Anything else you can remove is insurance fraud. And too risky, the building could collapse unexpected after the damage of the fire and water we are told. No time to seperate out the asbestos or the television or the vinyl records or the smokey, soaked rug or furniture before its buried in the landfill. The potent greenhouse gas HFC refrigerant in the refrigerator and air conditioner must be vented to the atmosphere as the building must come down, pulverized and be hauled to the landfill as soon as possible.

Maybe speed was of the essence and the building posed an immediate threat to public safety. The city engineer did and he understood better than any of us how a building could suddenly collapse. The building was old, the neighborhood had rapidly deteriorated since a drug rehab center had opened across the street. Gunfire rang out on the street minutes after I walked up it the last time I visited John to go through files. Plus the fire made everything stink so badly. Yuck. It would have been a job to restore such a mess. But in an era of greater material scarcity it probably would have happened. Probably not a lot of value at least on paper with today’s economy.

I’m just glad no one was hurt and we recovered a lot of important papers although certainly many others were lost. That house was a mess, it was full of papers and random junk. It inspired me to go on a purge of some of my own filing cabinets and discarding worn clothing so that I have less junk. Makes me even more resistant to getting more stuff. I didn’t grow up in the era before computers but I can’t imagine ever having nearly as much paper as Mr. Wolcott once had. If it’s important and I’m likely to use , scan it in. Otherwise, toss it. I know I won’t be saving nearly as much anytime random stuff in my future.

Plowing Day's Trash

May 22, 2021 Afternoon

Good afternoon! Partly sunny and 80 degrees in Saratoga, NY. โ˜” There is a west breeze at 8 mph. ๐ŸŒค๏ธThe dew point is 59 degrees. The skies will clear around 7 pm.

This afternoon I am going to my niece’s birthday ๐ŸŽ‚ party in Saratoga. Then I will go home and I have some work to do. ๐Ÿ“ At least I can work from home. ๐Ÿก Then I’ll probably go down to the river ๐ŸŽฃ to do some fishing. ๐Ÿ  Kind of a hot day. It’s fun to be going to a party with everybody vaccinated so no social distancing. ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ Even though we wear masks in the elevator at work, along with on the bus, we all know that is for show.

This afternoon will have a slight chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 1pm. Mostly cloudy โ›… , with a high of 86 degrees at 3pm. 13 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 59 at 12pm. West wind 8 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 83 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1911.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:53 pm with sun having an altitude of 67.4ยฐ from the due south horizon (-3ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:38 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (293ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (300ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:20 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 20 seconds with dusk around 8:52 pm, which is 58 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous ๐ŸŒ” Moon in the south-southeast (158ยฐ) at an altitude of 42ยฐ from the horizon, 228,545 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:36 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 77 degrees. The dew point will be 58 degrees. There will be a west breeze at 9 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 54 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 47 seconds over yesterday.

I ordered more jeans ๐Ÿ‘– and new boots ๐Ÿ‘ข as while my existing boots are okay they are getting worn down and probably only have a few weeks before they really fall apart. I also need jeans without holes and big stains before I go back to the office ๐Ÿข on casual dress days. Need to put my winter clothes back in the closet ๐Ÿงฃ and get out more summer clothes. I should work on repairing my camp lantern ๐Ÿฎ tonight if I have time.

Tonight will have a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms before 9pm. Partly cloudy ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 65 degrees at 5am. 15 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 61 at 2am. West wind 6 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies. It became humid as the night progressed. It got down to 60 degrees. The record low of 36 occurred back in 1967.

I might need the fan running indoors tonight โ˜ข although I’m not totally sure. Rather save electricity and just sit out back until things cool down a bit. I like being outdoors โœจ which is maybe why I’ve long refused to have air conditioning. Even though it’s hot now by evening it should be pretty nice out back with a cold glass of water. ๐Ÿฅ›

I was pretty set on Friday being my last counseling session ๐Ÿ’ญ but I got talked into doing another in three weeks. I have some better ideas for dealing with my anxiety and keeping things in context and in the grand scheme of things most of my issues pretty minor, I’m quite successful in my career and position pays well but there are still some topics I find difficult to discuss – namely my love of all things fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ – and I need to resolve to advance further in my career. ๐Ÿ’ผ

My off grid property and moving out west are dreams that continue to come closer but I have some unrealistic fears ๐Ÿก and worries I need to address further in my life but there is more to do. I feel like I’m having a hard time communicating with my therapist and I’m spending more and more money ๐Ÿ’ต but I’ve allocated $200 in copay for the process and while I told myself I’d reevaluate at $100 I’m going to give it one more try in three weeks. I just feel like I could do a lot better for myself if I addressed that one issue in my life, so I can take the next step and make more money. I just don’t understand my fear of that one stupid topic.

I cut my cellphone ๐Ÿ“ฑ plan down to the 10 gigabyte Hotspot plan as I find myself using the Hotspot data less now that it’s warmed up and I only used like 6 gigabyte the past month and it was more personal use as most of my work internet is Lexis or bill research and email which doesn’t use much data. ๐Ÿ“ถ Plus the library is now open for in person use with a mask ๐Ÿ˜ท and my ability to work in the office whenever I feel like the need to have a lot of bandwidth at home isn’t necessary but limited access for work emails is important while I’m still working from home or the woods a few days a week. Many days now I’m leaving the laptop at work so I’m not constantly hauling back and forth on the bus ๐Ÿš.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until 8:30 PM Sunset ๏ธโ›ฑ๏ธ when the sun will be setting with dusk at 9:05 pm. On that day in 2020, we had hot and humid, partly sunny skies with thunderstorm โ›ˆ and temperatures between 85 and 71 degrees. I am thinking Memorial Day Weekend doesn’t look great so that’s my next best chance to get away. Really would like to do Piseco-Powley Road but maybe it makes sense first to do a long weekend, say it, back in Spectulator and remote work ๐Ÿ’ป on the Friday and Monday. Typically, the high temperature is 77 degrees. We hit a record high of 97 back in 1925.

I need this flag for camping

The pandemic is over ๐Ÿ˜ท ๐Ÿ‘พ ๐Ÿ’‰

The pandemic is over ๐Ÿ˜ท ๐Ÿ‘พ ๐Ÿ’‰

The muzzles are going away with the president’s announcement, remote work is fizzling away with the hybrid model and in person office days replacing the summer weeks I spent much of last summer up in the woods. While I knew it would have to end at some point, especially after I was vaccinated – it was fun while it lasted.

The Ledge

The summer of 2020 is one for memories many fun but not all great. There was several weeks working from Spectulator and other parts of the Adirondacks, camping in the remote country while either running into town to connect to Wi-Fi or using the Hotspot on my phone. Particularly memorable was Primary Night 2020, working remotely from Horseshoe Lake, followed by climbing Lows Ledge the next evening after work.

Sure it wasn’t all wine and roses. First off in April it was a scary time during the deep lockdown, not knowing how many friends and family I would loose to the virus. Fortunately nobody real close. People were so obnoxious at first, there were the social virtue makers who made it sound like you were murdering babies to get away for a weekend in the Adirondack wilderness. That first weekend camping in the Adirondacks I had to hide from the world I was even heading out of town.

And it was tough personally at first for me as I didn’t have home internet nor really even a good setup to work. And certainly no air conditioning at home. My truck is getting old, and increasingly grones and makes scary noises over the hills and hollows – making me concerned that I could be stranded on my way to and from work in the wilderness. I bought a screen tent for work, had a grease fire and had to patch it.

Remote work

I ended up getting a laptop from work with a cellular wireless card and later I upgraded my phone plan temporarily to have Hotspot data which worked well. I thought about home internet but I didn’t want to commit as I knew the pandemic would eventually end with a promising vaccine in the works. Working remotely was fun but I tell you that I was always super careful to make sure I was super responsive to colleagues and clients, lest they think I was slacking off in my hammock in the wilderness.

Then the constant management of energy resources – I had upgraded to two batteries and better controls on my truck cap solar set up but I never expected the heavy load of 8 plus hours a day of the laptop plugged in on days not always sunny and with shade in the woods. And constant concerns that a cell tower would drop and ensuring that I was camping in locations with good cell service during work hours and wireless internet at libraries when I needed to do data heavy activities.

Nice day

Plus it wasn’t fun how work and off-work hours broke down. While there was times in the past when I was on-call, most weekends in the past they were just weekends and I could be totally off-the-grid, not worrying about cell service. But it seemed like the pandemic, work was from home, work was from camp, work was from the lakeside, it was every where. Even when work hours had more boundaries in hours worked, it always seemed like I never was home from work.

My travels were kind of the joke of office meetings on Zoom but things got done and done well. Sometimes from the hammock, sometimes from the table and screen tent and a lot of the time from my truck cab. There was blazing hot summer days and frigid winter days remote working from my truck. Not always comfortable but still always an adventure. But alas this week is the beginning of the end with regular scheduled days in the physical office which are likely to increase in the coming weeks.
