May 5, 2023 Morning

Good morning! Happy Cinco de Mayo. 🤠

Cinco de Mayo falls on a Friday, which doesn’t happen but every seven to eight years, unless of course you use the Cosworth calendar.

Cool and cloudy to start out the morning. Mostly cloudy and 42 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ Calm wind. The skies will clear around 1 pm.

My truck is mostly packed 🛻 for the coming weekend. I am working until 1 pm after which I’m heading out of town. It should be a nice weekend. I would have taken a full day off but this year hasn’t proven to have much comp time so I’m trying to save what I can for the summer and autumn when it’s really nice.

Today will have a chance of showers, mainly between noon and 5pm. Mostly cloudy 🌦, with a high of 61 degrees at 4pm. Seven degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 19th. Calm wind becoming north around 5 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 30%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 68 degrees. The record high of 91 was set in 1944. There was a dusting of snow in 1900.❄

Shopping for camping 🛒 these days feels so werid without buying beer, cheese, sausage, apple juice and cookies. 🍏 Apples, fish, spinach, potatoes, strawberries 🍓 are in. I have to admit my camp food selections tastes a lot better and are much healthier. Plus I like what it’s doing to my body.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:53 pm with sun having an altitude of 63.6° from the due south horizon (-7.2° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 7:20 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (287°). 📸

The sunset is in the west-northwest (293°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:00 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 8 seconds with dusk around 8:30 pm, which is one minute and 7 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the Full 🌝 Moon in the east-southeast (119°) at an altitude of 3° from the horizon, 236,835 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 9:10 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies 🌃 and temperatures around 55 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 14 hours and 17 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 25 seconds over yesterday.

I think it will be a great weekend to get away. ⛺ Enjoy the quiet, have some good meals and do some hiking. Lay back in the hammock, have a nice fire 🔥. Plus with work and everything else I’m not sure if I’ll be able to get out of town again until June. 🏖

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌃 , with a low of 41 degrees at 5am. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 26th. Light northwest wind. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 49 degrees. The record low of 29 occurred back in 1969.

Tomorrow will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 69 degrees at 4pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 7th. Northwest wind 3 to 7 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 63 degrees. The record high of 89 was set in 1930. There was a dusting of snow in 1994.❄

Looking ahead to Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 70. ☀ Calm wind becoming west around 6 mph in the afternoon. Maximum dew point of 46 at 7pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 68 degrees.

One month 📅 from now will be 8:30 PM Sunset ️⛱️ when the sun will be setting at 8:30 pm with dusk at 9:03 pm. The average high temperature is 34 degrees, with a record high of 61 in 1895.

Rough Road

May 1, 2023 Morning

Happy May Day! 🌷

I guess it’s May so they stopped the rain showers for like two minutes. It’s only a few minutes before they crank the outdoors thermostat to 95. My neighbor already has his air conditioner installed. Me, I’ll open my windows and get the fan out as needed and make plans to head to the Potholers.

Good morning! Clouds 🌥 the rain has pulled off and 48 degrees in Delmar for the morning walk. There is a west breeze at 11 mph. 🍃 with gusts up to 22 mph 💨💨💨

Kind of a chilly morning 🍃 to start off the month with the breeze and dampness making it feel a bit cool. I’m out walking 🚶 like usual, last months total worked out to be 320 miles walked. Probably that contributed to some of my weight loss plus my general reduction in calorie intake.

Today will have a chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2pm. Mostly cloudy 🌦, with a high of 60 degrees at 2pm. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 17th. Southwest wind 11 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 69 degrees. The record high of 86 was set in 2001. There was a dusting of snow in 1978.❄ It’s funny, I turned off the internal snow depth monitoring system on the blog on May 1st and there was that one year I awoke to a ton of snow at Moose River Plains. Okay maybe just a dusting but that’s a ton by May standards.

Last night got a good night’s sleep 🛏 by getting to bed by 8. If I’m going to get going early each morning I should at least plan to get to bed early. Rained and rained last night but it was good for my sleep. 😴

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:53 pm with sun having an altitude of 62.4° from the due south horizon (-8.4° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 7:16 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (285°). 📸

Need to get milk 🥛 this morning for the coffee ☕ as over the weekend the milk in the fridge got kind of rancid. I might just get a half gallon of skim just because I’m not drinking as much milk these days. 🐮 Mostly just for coffee. It will probably last longer than the gallons of milk I used to get and take less room in the cooler this weekend. Plus the paper carton is probably greener when it gets burnt and makes an excellent fire starter. 🔥

Thought about pancakes 🥞 or eggs 🥚 this morning but decided for the lighter fare of oatmeal 🥣 as last night at the folks house I had quiche. Mom insisted it was healthy, but I took a small slice of it which was good because the healthy portion with spinach was small the greasy sausage in it part was large. 🥧 I’ve gotten so sensetive about unhealthy food after reading how much damage it does to your body. 🤮 Maybe tomorrow I’ll do “oatmeal – banana – egg” pancakes or cut my remaining unhealthy sqpancake mix with old fashioned whole oats and banana.

The sunset is in the west-northwest (292°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:55 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 7 seconds with dusk around 8:25 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous 🌔 Moon in the southeast (142°) at an altitude of 45° from the horizon, 247,882 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 9:04 pm.

I am not sure how late I’ll get home today 🏢, it could a late night or maybe not. I could use some comp time, especially as I don’t currently have much and I’d kind of like to use a get out of jail free card 🎫 to leave early on Friday.

At sunset, look out for rain showers 🌧 and thunderstorms 🌩 and temperatures around 52 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 8 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 30 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have scattered showers and thunderstorms. ⛈ Mostly cloudy, with a low around 44. South wind 7 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Tomorrow we will have showers 🌧️ before 11am, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm between 11am and 5pm, then showers likely after 5pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 54. South wind 8 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Almost picture perfect spring weekend on tap. 😎 Finally. I mean really the past two weeks have been real bummers. Things should be real green but the black flies 🐜 will be out in mass, at least up north. Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 67. Maximum dew point of 44 at 8pm. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 72. Maximum dew point of 46 at 7pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 68 degrees.

I was thinking about either Old Route 8B or East Branch Sacandaga River for the weekend ⛺ but now I’m leaning towards Schoharie and maybe hiking from Grand Gorge to Stamford on Sunday. 🚶 Might be a nice hike with everything greening up that way. Spring turkey 🦃 starts today, well regular spring turkey, youth season started a few days ago so I will want to stay out of the woods before noon but I could fish or do road hikes on Saturday before then.

One month 📅 from now will be 9 PM Dusk 🌆 when the sun will be setting at 8:27 pm with dusk at 9:00 pm. The average high temperature is 34 degrees, with a record high of 61 in 1895.

What I Like To Do Around Camp

People sometimes ask what I like to do while camping⛺ Besides sitting by the fire and listening to the spring peepers and the birds,🐸 I also will often put on some music or a podcast, especially in the evening.

In the day time I like to cook – I actually like camp cooking better than at home as I’m not distracted by all the other things going on at home. 🍳I also spend a lot of time reading as camping often is a long distraction free time for me. Lately I’ve been spending more time writing, 📚as I’m trying to capture more of my thoughts and experiences in words.

 Camping At Camp Run

Camping in the wilderness is a chance to get away from all the noise and problems that are inherent in living in the city.

April 13, 2023 Morning

On our way to 86 degrees. ☀

Refreshingly cool this morning but I’m sure it will warm up quickly as the day progresses. Probably want to draw my shades in my office as it will get warm inside.

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Clear and 56 degrees in Delmar, NY. 🌅 Some haze to the east adding some oranges and yellows to the sunrise. Calm wind. The dew point is 45 degrees. Not very humid but not bone dry. I heard there was wildfires out in Schoharie out by the 88.

Today will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 86 degrees at 3pm. 28 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 48 at 2pm. Light and variable wind becoming west 5 to 10 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 77 degrees. The record high of 87 was set in 1977. 5.5 inches of snow fell back in 1950.❄

Going to be a hot one it seems 😰 but not a lot of humidity. The breeze might actually make it feel nice in the evening. Should be a really nice day.

Yesterday I made up the shrimp 🦐 and rice 🍚 I was thinking about on Tuesday. Really hit the spot. I cooked the rice, onions and lentils before work and thawed a few precooked shrimp during the day in the fridge. Great summer meal, no need for any salt or seasoning in the rice as the shrimp and onions provided all that was needed.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:57 pm with sun having an altitude of 56.4° from the due south horizon (-14.5° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 6:57 pm with the sun in the west (277°). 📸

I was looking at some old pictures from high school and was noticing how much thinner I am ☺ then twenty years ago. Some of it is my more recent healthy eating and walk 🚶 program though I think the first drop was in college walking and biking the rural roads around my house then moving to the suburbs and walking most places in my neighborhood. But there is more to do but I’m learning a lot and the things I buy and put in my body are different at age 40 are different than younger years.

The sunset is in the west-northwest (283°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:35 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 59 seconds with dusk around 8:03 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 8:39 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 80 degrees. The dew point will be 49 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 7 mph. Tomorrow will have 13 hours and 23 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 48 seconds over today.

Yesterday I walked out to Five Rivers 🐸 after work. Worked out to be 25,000 steps or 12 1/2 miles for the day. I’ll have to keep Five Rivers in mind for evening walks, especially as the days get longer. It’s a nice change from the Town Park.

Tonight will be mostly clear 🌃, with a low of 55 degrees at 6am. 19 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around June 6th. Maximum dew point of 51 at 11pm. West wind around 6 mph. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 45 degrees. The record low of 19 occurred back in 1973.

Mild but cloudy for the weekend. 🌥 Saturday, a chance of showers after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 77. Southeast wind 5 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 54 at 7pm. Sunday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 67. Maximum dew point of 52 at 10am. Typical average high for the weekend is 59 degrees.

Looking ahead, there are 2 weeks until Arbor Day 🌳 when the sun will be setting at 7:52 pm with dusk at 8:20 pm. On that day in 2022, we had mostly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 51 and 39 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 65 degrees. We hit a record high of 91 back in 1962.

Thinking about this summer camping in Western Adirondacks / Black River Valley 🏕

Cow with Sunglasses (Up Closer)

It’s been about ten years since I’ve been up that way for a week in summer, and I’m tired of the Finger Lakes. I’ve done them for over a decade, and while it’s nice that you can set up camp for a full week on the National Forest, it has gotten tiresome doing it every year.

Some things I would like to do this year:

  • Explore more of Confusion Flats-area, especially hike the flats and the many horse trails
  • Hike to the Woodhull Fire Tower
  • Hike to Stillwater Fire Tower
  • Visit the Frank Jadwin State Forest and Greenwood Creek Forest north of Lowville
  • Paddle parts of the Beaver River
  • Visit Lake Bonaparte

March 28, 2023 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. ☁️

It’s official the normal high is 50 and will be above that until November. It’s more clear then ever that the heat is done until then. Now just the wait until the green up, the drying of the mud and the black flies.

Cloudy, dark and 38 degrees in Delmar for the morning walk. ☁️ There is a north-northwest breeze at 7 mph. 🍃. The rain is done and more sun is expected late.

The heavy rain ☔ held off until late and got my 7 1/2 miles of walking 🚶 in for the day yesterday which was good. I woke up early – that is 4:30 and then fell asleep until 6 when I started my walk. I can wait until it’s a bit warmer and I can sleep with my windows open. That said, I really need a night in the wilderness with a rip roaring fire 🔥 to sleep well.

Today will have a slight chance of showers before 8am. Mostly cloudy ⛅ with more sun late 🌞, with a high of 48 degrees at 4pm. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 24th. North wind 7 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 27 degrees. The record high of 85 was set in 1945. 14.2 inches of snow fell back in 1932.❄

Solar noon 🌞 is at 1:01 pm with sun having an altitude of 50.3° from the due south horizon (-20.5° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 6:39 pm with the sun in the west (269°). 📸

I thought Monday was a good day ☺, getting out at five with the crappy bus driver not driving so I caught the express 🚏which was running a bit late but not a big deal.
