Where have all the August days gone, long time passing? โ›ฑ๏ธ๐Ÿฉด๐Ÿฆ•๐ŸŒฝ๐ŸŽช๐ŸŽข๐ŸŽก

Where have all the August days gone,
With memories from dawn to dusk?
They slipped through time’s gentle hand,
Leaving memories in the mud and muck.

Good morning! August days fade away as mostly wet memories — though it looks like come September a beautiful stretch of weather is ahead. Did you see that big blue moon last night? Mostly clear and 56 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒ… There is a north-northwest breeze at 9 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 51 degrees.

A nice morning for the walk ๐Ÿšถ. I have chickpeas cooking down on the stove this morning ๐Ÿฒ in a second attempt to make hummus again this time with fully cooked down chickpeas, sufficient salt and olive oil and fresh lemon ๐Ÿ‹. This time hopefully it will be a nice smooth mixture. ๐Ÿ›ป Tomorrow at this time my hope is to be heading towards Tribes Hill for Samdil’s Farm to stock up ๐ŸŒฝ ๐Ÿ† ๐Ÿ… ๐Ÿฅฉ ๐Ÿฅš prior to the Adirondacks. โ›ฐ๏ธ

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 73 degrees at 4pm. Seven degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 19th. Maximum dew point of 50 at 6am. North wind 8 to 10 mph. Very autumn like day ahead. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 79 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 1953.

Closing out summer what seems like much too soon ๐ŸŒป but it always seems to happen this way. I went out to Bender Mellon Preserve ๐Ÿˆ after finishing off the last cantaloupe last night probably the last time after work until next spring due to the early sunset. Dark and shadowy now for the morning walk too as the sun rises later.

The red lentil wraps I made yesterday worked out good, ๐Ÿณ they were tasty with just the right amount of added sea salt. Again the key was soaking the lentils in advance all day so they were big and soft when they hit the food processor to make a good batter. ๐Ÿฅž Ultimately they were delicious with the red kidney beans and maple syrup ๐Ÿ for dinner though I’m sure if I had kept more water in mix they would have been excellent wraps. Might try again up at camp this weekend.

Glad I rode back and forth to work yesterday ๐Ÿšฒ as there was a car ๐Ÿš™ ๐Ÿ”ฅ fire on the Thruway and 787 was quite backed up plus I saved $2.70 for the day and got good exercise. Strong west wind coming out of the Norman’s Kill Gorge but I knocked it down and climbed slowly in lower gear โš™. Going to do the same today.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:57 pm with sun having an altitude of 56.1° from the due south horizon (-14.7° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:56 pm with the sun in the west (276°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (283°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:34 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 58 seconds with dusk around 8:01 pm, which is one minute and 41 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:38 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 69 degrees. The dew point will be 49 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 6 mph. Tomorrow will have 13 hours and 13 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 46 seconds over today.

Tonight will be clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 50 degrees at 6am. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 22nd. North wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. In 2022, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 55 degrees. The record low of 41 occurred back in 1967.

Funny thing about all this warm weather coming up next week ๐Ÿ˜Ž is I am already thinking a lot about the soups I can make up for cheap this winter, and are a bit disappointed that coming week isn’t going to be good soup weather. I was researching the use of canned broth and bouillon mixes and making my own stock for soup in coming months. ๐Ÿž ๐Ÿฒ Bouillon is cheapest and easiest way to add flavor to soup and other meals, and broth is fine though it seems like a lot of packaging, and once you open it up, you kind of have to use it up quickly. Most bouillon is high in salt though, in part due to it’s use as a preservative, but also taste. The flipside is the salt in bouillon means you can leave it out of the rest of the soup, and soup can keep you going most of the day. Stock is a good way to go if I have time — a whole chicken isn’t that expensive and I think I have a big enough pot. I am thinking soup is a great way to make a lot of healthy meals cheaply, and would be so good with the simple, whole wheat bread like I made up earlier in the week.

On this day in 1965, Super Guppy took it’s first flight. The Aero Spacelines Super Guppy is a large, wide-bodied cargo aircraft that is used for hauling outsize cargo components. ๐Ÿ›ฌ It was the successor to the Pregnant Guppy, the first of the Guppy aircraft produced by Aero Spacelines, which in turn was named for its resemblance to a pregnant guppy. Five were built in two variants, both of which were colloquially referred to as the “Super Guppy”.

A truly beautiful Labor Day Weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Friday, clear and crisp 74. Might want to wear jeans and even a long shirt for heading up north! Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 81. South wind 3 to 8 mph. Maximum dew point of 59 at 4pm. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 85. Maximum dew point of 66 at 4pm. Labor Day, sunny heading up to 90. Typical average high for the weekend is 79 degrees.

I packed clothes and filled the water containers ๐ŸŽ’ in preparation for Labor Day Weekend and will finish packing this evening. I want to be to bed well before 9 PM, maybe 8:30 so I can get a very early start tomorrow, and be on the road before 7 AM if at al possible, so I can hit Spectulator by nine or so. Not because I’m planning on working ๐Ÿ’ค but I want to get that Hardwood Hill Campsite if at all possible, and then have the hammock set up and be all set up by mid-day, after which I’ll go for a nice bike ride. ๐Ÿšฒ I was thinking on Saturday or Sunday when it’s warmer, one option would be to ride down to Jessup River to cool off in the creek, although I almost want to drive down just so I can bring the tube for floating and cooling off. ๐ŸŠ‍โ™€๏ธ Going to be hot come Labor Day, though not excessively hot up north — but it is September. Still with the sun, it could get pretty warm up on Hardwood Hill, should I get that campsite.

Looking ahead, there are 6 weeks until Columbus Day Weekend starts โ›ต when the sun will be setting at 6:20 pm with dusk at 6:47 pm. Can you believe only six weeks until that one final big blast of autumn color? On that day in 2022, we had partly sunny, shallow fog and temperatures between 71 and 41 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 63 degrees. We hit a record high of 85 back in 1954.

Blue to Yellow

A cloudy and dark Tuesday for rounding out August โ˜๏ธ

Listening to Rich Men North of Richmond as I’m out for the morning walk, living in the new world with and old soul. A big pot of brown rice, red and green lentils are cooking down for the week – already had my first cup of coffee and looking forward to cream of wheat with chia seeds, yogurt and frozen fruit.

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Dark and gray and 64 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ But when there is no hope, there is help – see today’s forecast in the third paragraph. It’s already clearing to the east. There is a south-southeast breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 64 degrees.

I was hoping to ride home last night ๐Ÿšฒ but when I started down Madison it started raining โ˜” and I ran over to Broadway in front of the old Union Train Station and put my bicycle on the bus ๐Ÿš and rode home. I should remember that is always an option and riding even one way still burns calories and saves money ๐Ÿ’ต. Bike rides secure but bounces a lot on some of the bumps. Heck of it is was just a light drizzle I’d probably had been fine to ride home but whatever – my left eye ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ was kind of irritated at any rate.

Today will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 81 degrees at 4pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around August 27th. Maximum dew point of 67 at 6pm. Going to be sweating a bit on the ride out of Norman’s Kill. Maybe not a good day for making those spinach pizza things I’ve been thinking about cooking this afternoon. It will depend how hot and sweaty I am when I get home and if I want to ride out to Voorheesville in twilight of the day. Maybe tomorrow with the rain. South wind 5 to 8 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was sticky. The high last year was 91 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 2018.

Wearing my glasses into work today ๐Ÿ‘“ so I can totally have the four-eyes are better then two eyes look today. I don’t l like my limited view from the glasses, but I also don’t want to do any more damage to my sore eyes. I am hopeful by mid-day and evening commute I can be back to contacts. Then assuming the weather doesn’t crap out, it will be back down the Madison Street Hill, and then to Albany County Rail Trail making the climb ๐Ÿ˜… up through the Normans Kill George ๐Ÿšฒ to home.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:57 pm with sun having an altitude of 56.8° from the due south horizon (-14° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.9 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:59 pm with the sun in the west (277°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (284°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:37 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 58 seconds with dusk around 8:04 pm, which is one minute and 40 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Blue ๐ŸŒ Moon in the southeast (124°) at an altitude of 7° from the horizon, 226,316 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:42 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 76 degrees. The dew point will be 67 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 7 mph. Tomorrow will have 13 hours and 18 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 45 seconds over today.

Went to bed ๐Ÿ› early around 7:45 and I was asleep by eight. My left eye ๐Ÿ‘๏ธwas very irritated as I forgot my contact solution when I went out to my parents house yesterday overnight and by afternoon it was a mess. Kind of a dark and rainy evening โ˜” and because I get up so early it’s hard for me to stay up late. Had a great dinner of tofu – zucchini parmesan with the sauce made from delicious paste tomatoes that I got from my parents house. ๐Ÿ… Dessert was opening up that cantaloupe that I got at the store ๐Ÿˆ on Sunday. Good stuff.

Tonight will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 4am. ๐ŸŒง Low of 66 degrees at 6am. Seven degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 67 at 6pm. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ South wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It became very sticky as the night progressed. It got down to 66 degrees. The record low of 38 occurred back in 1982.

Yesterday, I got a call from a friend who was a nurse ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍โš•๏ธ in her younger years, concerned about all my recent weight loss. Apparently a lot of people have been talking about how much thinner I’ve gotten, concerned that I’m not eating enough. ๐Ÿ“ฉ She sent me an article about the dangers of loosing weight too quickly, with fatty liver disease and other things that can happen if your crashing with your calorie intake. But truth be told, But the thing is when you don’t eat a lot of processed foods and eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, ๐Ÿ it’s hard to eat excessively and keep pounds on. ๐ŸคฐTrust me, I’m often very stuffed after eating and keep filling my mouth throughout the day with quality food. I don’t just eat 3 times a day, but non-stop from morning to night.

The heck of it is despite all my weight loss, I am eating more then ever and spending more on food. ๐Ÿ’ธ  Some of it’s inflation but also I’ve been trying to expand my pantry and keeping healthy eating interesting, with new and different foods every week. At first I was very picky about what should be in my diet ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ” but now I focus more on overall, doing a lot more home cooking with quality ingredients and very little sugar, saturated fats, and a reasonable amount of carbs. And lots of fruits and vegetables, consistent with Harvard guidelines for such things. ๐Ÿฝ That said, I am surprised how much I’ve lost even since May. The 36×32 jeans I bought this weekend which I was afraid would be too tight, where almost too loose, almost necessitating a drop to 34. Figuring a year ago was I was primarily wearing 40 inch jeans, and even at times some of them were a bit tight, I’ve become so much thinner and healthier. I think it’s doing the stairs at work and lately bicycling to work. It’s not the limiting the plate size for sure.

I did do that physical back in late May, ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍โš•๏ธ I’ve thought about reaching out to my Health Insurance’s nurses line to see if they have any advice on my recent weight loss. I am not concerned as I think it’s just I”m burning more calories then I’m taking in โš– but folks still seem to be very concerned. I am hearing that from a lot of people. Maybe I should see if my insurance covers the visiting of a dietitian to help me better understand my food choices, and come up with a better balanced meals, though I think my food choices are basically the consensus of what most of the health experts are saying, ๐Ÿฅ‘ and I’m NOT under in-taking healthy fats or proteins — or have some kind of undiagnosed disease. It’s not just that one nurse friend either, it’s relatives, co-workers and others.

On this day in 1966, the Beatles perform their last concert before paying fans ๐ŸŽธ at Candlestick Park in a wicked thunderstorm โ›ˆ San Francisco. After this, if you wanted to hear the Beatles, you had to listen to them on vinyl records or AM radio. ๐Ÿ“ป Their next album would be Sargent Pepper’s Lonely Club Heart band, and it would have a dramatically different sound then the Love, Love Me Do records. ๐ŸŽถ

I have Labor Day Weekend Off ๐Ÿ• including the Friday before so I can go up to camp bright and early. I probably will do like I did two week ago — pack Thursday night — leave very early, maybe before seven, get gas in Rotterdam, โ›ฝ then stop at Samdil Farm for sweet corn and vegetables and maybe meat, ๐ŸŒฝ ๐Ÿฅฉ Walmart for supplies ๐Ÿ›’ and then try to make Speculator as close to 9 AM as possible to get the campsite I want and get set up. Then hang out for a bit, have lunch, then maybe mountain bike ๐Ÿšต‍โ™€๏ธ in the afternoon and do some fishing. ๐ŸŽฃ Maybe kayak Indian Lake on Saturday, if not to choppy. ๐Ÿ›ถ Saturday evening I might do an after-dark hike up Watch Hill to spot fire towers lit for the firetower light-the-night event. ๐Ÿƒ ๐Ÿ”ฆ Later in the weekend, probably Sunday or Labor Day I’ll have to go back down to Spectulator for some swimming. ๐ŸŠ. Should be a wonderful weekend, especially with some fresh-locally sourced steak and shrimp. And so much delicious sweet corn and other good things to eat.

A picture perfect Labor Day Weekend ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Friday, sunny high around 75 with a maximum dew point of 57 come 7 pm. Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 80. Maximum dew point of 61 at 4pm. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 84. Maximum dew point of 65 at 1pm. Labor Day is going to warm, may hit 87 degrees with lots of sun. I’ll be on the kayak ๐Ÿ›ถ on Lake Pleasant. Typical average high for the weekend is 79 degrees. Won’t be quite as warm up north.

Looking ahead, there are 9 weeks until Halloween ๐ŸŽƒ when the sun will be setting at 5:51 pm with dusk at 6:19 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 64 and 37 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 56 degrees. We hit a record high of 75 back in 2019. Been interested in making some baked pumpkin dishes, come the autumn. Plus pumpkins are a lot of fun to shoot with the ol .22 rifle up in the woods.

Little Moose Lake

Monday returns this last one of August ๐ŸŒผ

The clam bake last night with the folks was nice, stayed overnight, having breakfast and then will head home, shower and ride to work. Got to burn off those alcohol calories from the family clam bake riding up the Madison Street Hill. Then the hike up to the 18th floor.

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. Partly sunny and 55 degrees in Dormansville, NY. ๐ŸŒ„ Calm wind. The dew point is 55 degrees. It’s a pleasant morning, I was up around 5 AM which sounds early but I was dead out a little after nine, after having a few beers with the family clam bake, then drinking some of the clam juice. Part of the reason I woke up so early is I had to go pee off the tailgate of my truck. But it was a nice morning.

I had a nice morning with mom and dad ๐Ÿณ, mom made up her scrambled eggs with tomato, spinach and feta. Maybe not as healthy as I’d make it up at home as I really like to load my eggs up with spinach, but still pretty good breakfast. They also have some bacon ๐Ÿฅ“ which I had a small portion along with toast, which I had a half a slice. Maybe I’d have more but I had a lot of clams ๐Ÿ•น last night and didn’t want to totally over-due it. Lunch today at work I am going the direction of tofu and veggies, for some less calories but still a good portion of fiber and protein. Looking at my nutrient profile, I think I’m still consuming way too much sugar in my day, so lately I’ve been swapping out some of the fruit in my office ๐Ÿ for more carrots or celery with halved avocados for dipping. ๐Ÿฅ‘ The great thing about the celery or carrot ๐Ÿฅ• combination with avocados is you end up with fiber and omega-3 fats certain to help ward off hunger for a few hours.

Today will have a slight chance of showers after 2pm. Patchy fog before 8am. Otherwise, partly sunny ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 73 degrees at 2pm. A bit foggy currently in Dormansville, will have to be careful going over Derbyshire Hill to Clarksville this morning. Seven degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 19th. Maximum dew point of 63 at 4pm. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. It was humid. The high last year was 83 degrees. The record high of 98 was set in 1948.

I am not sure if it’s going to rain ๐ŸŒฆ or not be nice for the evening bike ride home, but if it’s bad, I’ll just put Blackie ๐Ÿšต‍โ™€๏ธ on the bus, and we’ll take it from there. I had forgotten how nice the bike racks are on the bus, and how secure bikes ride when you mount them on the bus. ๐ŸšŒ The thing is if you ride at least one way, that’s still calories burned and time enjoyed on the bike trail, even if I can’t do both ways. But I’m hopeful the rain holds off until 6 PM or later, or if I get a little wet on my evening commute, ๐Ÿ’ฆ I don’t think I’ll necessarily melt. Might be muggy later, but probably not super hot.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:58 pm with sun having an altitude of 57.3° from the due south horizon (-13.7° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.9 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:01 pm with the sun in the west (278°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (284°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:39 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 59 seconds with dusk around 8:06 pm, which is one minute and 39 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Full ๐ŸŒ Moon in the southeast (137°) at an altitude of 12° from the horizon, 226,847 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:44 pm.

At sunset, look out for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 67 degrees. The dew point will be 63 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 5 mph. Tomorrow will have 13 hours and 21 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 44 seconds over today. Probably a good night to spend with a book at home ๐Ÿ“— — I still have a lot of books to read but I have to find the time to do it. I am thinking of doing another light meal for dinner to balance out the heavy calorie-rich clam bake of yesterday ๐Ÿ•น and carbs of bread and bacon this morning, probably broil tofu with smoked salt, green beans, sweet corn and crack open that cantaloupe I bought yesterday for dessert. ๐Ÿˆ Need to find out if those 36″ waist jeans I bought yesterday at Walmart fit. I should try them on. ๐Ÿ‘–

Tonight will be mostly cloudy โ˜๏ธ, with a low of 60 degrees at 4am. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical night around August 25th. Maximum dew point of 64 at 8pm. South wind around 6 mph. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It became very sticky as the night progressed. It got down to 69 degrees. The record low of 34 occurred back in 1982.

The clam bake I had with my folks was pretty good, ๐Ÿ•น though I wish there was more veggies and garlic in the mix, ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿณ but I had to compromise over how I wanted it versus what my parents would like. My mom has surgery in a few days, so it was one of the last days she could enjoy food like this for a few months, so it was fun spending a nice evening out back, especially as you know these nice evenings won’t last forever.

Labor Day Weekend Looks Great. ๐Ÿ‘ทFriday, mostly sunny, with a high near 74. Maximum dew point of 57 at 6pm. Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 78. Maximum dew point of 60 at 7pm. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 79. Maximum dew point of 64 at 1pm. Labor Day, will be a warm 85 degrees and sunny. Typical average high for the weekend is 79 degrees.

Definitely going to try to take Friday off so I can get a jump on the holiday weekend โ›บ in the Adirondacks. Thinking Speculator for a great weekend with lots of sun โ˜€ relaxing, biking and swimming ๐ŸŠ. It doesn’t look like we will be short on staff, I could probably remote work but I’d rather just be able to set up camp and relax, do a lot of mountain biking or paddling on Friday, especially as the weather looks so nice. And hammock time with a good book. ๐Ÿ˜ Plus maybe some of those fourth of July fireworks I bought but never lit off.  And a few cold beers, though not like back in the day. ๐Ÿบ I mean I was surprised how many pounds I packed on Piseco-Powley during that rainy weekend a few weeks back, with some drinking and too many shrimp and other things cooked with cornstarch. Burned it off in a few days, but it was noticeable.

Hard to believe but, next Monday is Labor Day ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐Ÿญ when the sun will be setting at 7:27 pm with dusk at 7:54 pm. Dark so early, come September! On that day in 2022, we had hot, humid, partly sunny, rain showers and temperatures between 87 and 61 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 79 degrees. We hit a record high of 97 back in 1929.

Full Dumpster

The day of John Wolcott’s funeral โ›ชโšฑ๏ธ๐Ÿ™

It’s kind of odd how a man’s final days come. You never think these days will come, it’s a long but steady decline and then it’s finally over with the funeral. I knew John from Save the Pine Bush, then helping him with computers and GIS, then sorting out through his files and interviews for a future documentary though between his house fire and failing memory after anaplasmosis brought him crashing down in the bathtub much was lost. I’ll never be the red headed radical who preserved so much history but it was good to know him over the years.

Good morning! Partly cloudy and 68 degrees at the Elm Avenue Town Park. โ›… Calm wind. The dew point is 66 degrees. The skies will clear around 9 am.

Time is tight โŒ›as I go for a walk ๐Ÿšถ at the Elm Ave Town Park ๐Ÿž after riding Blackie ๐Ÿšต down here for a few minutes of serenity ๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™‚๏ธ before heading back home, ironing the pants and shirt, putting on the black tie for the funeral in Colonie at 10. I was up early and should have gotten an earlier start but I feel uneasy about the funeral โ›ช and a lot of other things in my life. In the coming weeks I’ll be moving to a new position with work, out of downtown ๐Ÿข into a suburban office complex but if I take a shuttle bus or ride my bike ๐Ÿšฒ things don’t have to change much but still it’s a lot to chew over with today’s funeral. ๐Ÿ’ญ It’s good for my future and the company I work for.

Today will have isolated showers and thunderstorms after 3pm. Mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 81 degrees at 2pm. Typical for today. Maximum dew point of 67 at 9am. Light northwest wind increasing to 5 to 9 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was sticky. The high last year was 83 degrees. The record high of 98 was set in 1948.

The weekend has turned out better than expected especially today, โ˜บafter putting off the clam bake ๐Ÿฆช with my parents but it’s fine, I need time to process John Wolcott’s death. I ended up spending a lot of time with him in his final years though maybe not enough and I certainly didn’t ask the right questions in the time remaining or take him out to the Crossings one last time. ๐Ÿž You never know when it’s over even while you watch the decline. He did so much good for the community while I’ve focused my life primarily around my future, saving and earning money though occasionally speaking up and doing a little activism but mostly remaining a private citizen outside of my quiet little blog on the internet.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:58 pm with sun having an altitude of 57.9ยฐ from the due south horizon (-13ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.8 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:04 pm with the sun in the west (279ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (285ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:42 pm after setting for 3 minutes with dusk around 8:09 pm, which is one minute and 38 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous ๐ŸŒ” Moon in the south-southeast (165ยฐ) at an altitude of 18ยฐ from the horizon, 229,775 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:47 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 74 degrees. The dew point will be 63 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 29 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 42 seconds over yesterday.

After the funeral I plan to go to Farmer’s Indian Market ๐Ÿš to see what kind of rices, bulk spices, seasonings I can get there. Then Yonder Farms for apples, peaches ๐Ÿ‘ and anything else good I can get there. Then Stantons for sweet corn ๐ŸŒฝ and veggies. ๐Ÿ† If time allows I’m thinking ๐Ÿ’ญ of taking the Nature Bus ๐Ÿš and Blackie ๐Ÿšต up to Thacher State Park for a ride. Then home this evening ๐ŸŒƒ bake the bread ๐Ÿž and head to bed quite early.

Tonight will be scattered showers and thunderstorms before 9pm, then isolated showers between 9pm and midnight. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 60 degrees at 6am. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical night around August 25th. Maximum dew point of 64 at 6pm. Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2022, we had cloudy skies. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 64 degrees. The record low of 41 occurred back in 1969.

Today in 1920, the 19th amendment to United States Constitution takes effect, giving women the right to vote in federal elections.๐Ÿง‘ It’s unfortunate after all these years we still haven’t been able to elect a women president. It seems hard to believe that for many years only white, property owning men could vote. ๐Ÿ—ณ Really kind of elitist when you think ๐Ÿค” about it.

Looking ahead, there are 10 weeks until Daylight Savings Time Ends ๐Ÿ•’ when the sun will be setting at 5:46 pm with dusk at 6:14 pm. That seems much too soon but winter will be back before you know it. On that day in 2022, we had sunny, warm and temperatures between 71 and 46 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 54 degrees. We hit a record high of 76 back in 1994.

Songs about about of populism and nostalgia dominate the radio while people think back to the simpler more innocent times of the 2000s and 2010s when Climate Change induced storms didn’t lead the news headlines a leading presidential candidate wasn’t an octonian or an multi time indicted felon. As we count down the days until America turns 250 with all the signs and banners to be erected and days to be celebrated with fireworks and picnics.

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Mostly cloudy and 58 degrees in Delmar for the morning walk. โ˜ There is a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 54 degrees. The skies will clear Saturday around 4 am.

Woke up early โฐ as I was asleep early at nine 9โƒฃ and made an omelet with chopped zucchini and tomatoes that I ran through the food processor with garlic and onion. Added a little bit of milk and corn starch to make the egg extra fluffy. Breakfast first then the walk. Normally I prefer the other order but it was dark out early.

Today will have a chance of showers, mainly between noon and 3pm. Cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 69 degrees at 2pm. 12 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 28th. Maximum dew point of 61 at 2pm. South wind 6 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was humid. The high last year was 86 degrees. The record high of 95 was set in 1947.

Maybe it won’t be a wash out today๐ŸŒง๏ธ but I think it probably best to take the bus ๐Ÿš in today to work as it likely will be rain by evening. I’ve also noticed a numbness in my finger tips ๐Ÿ–• and that’s a sign of carpal tunnel syndrome developing in my hands ๐Ÿ‘ by putting too much weight on them and pinching the nerves. Not as bad yesterday as I was more careful about putting so much weight on them heading home climbing that big hill out of gorge but I got to be careful about pinching the nerves and causing permanent damage needing surgery.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:59 pm with sun having an altitude of 58.5° from the due south horizon (-12.3° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:07 pm with the sun in the west (280°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (286°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:45 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 1 seconds with dusk around 8:13 pm, which is one minute and 36 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous ๐ŸŒ” Moon in the south-southwest (194°) at an altitude of 20° from the horizon, 234,641 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:51 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 67 degrees. The dew point will be 60 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 13 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 34 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 41 seconds over yesterday.

Yesterday I rode out to Voorheesville ๐Ÿš‚ along the rail trail and spent a little bit of time out at the park ๐Ÿž with a book before it got dark out. 25 miles ridden and 4 miles walked yesterday. Today I doubt ๐Ÿคท‍โ™‚๏ธ I’ll do much riding today but I’ll walk five miles plus do the stairs at the office. As previously noted, I was in bed before 9 PM and didn’t bother to watch the Republican debate. ๐Ÿ˜ It’s not like I plan to vote for any candidates, as I’m an enrolled Democrat and I think I prefer Biden over any of the GOP candidates, not that I’m a big lover of Biden either but he does seem to be doing some meaningful things on the environment and climate change — to say nothing of labor and civil rights. Maybe he’s the best option, but I’ll cast my protest vote come November 2024, as New York is almost certain to go blue regardless of my vote. ๐Ÿ’™

Oliver Anthony’s Rich Men North of Richmond, ๐ŸŽค might be rocking the country charts, with it’s anti-establishment critical view of what’s happening in our government, but he also has a pretty good mixture of other songs worth listening to even if you don’t like his controversial lyrics for putting the government in a bad light. ๐Ÿฐ I was listening to more of his songs, and really enjoying it. There is a lot of other good artists over at RadioWV.

Tonight will have showers and thunderstorms likely, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 2am. ๐ŸŒง Low of 63 degrees at 5am. Three degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 63 at 1am. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ Breezy, with a south wind 13 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It was humid. It got down to 60 degrees. The record low of 35 occurred back in 1940.

Been researching how to bake bread ๐Ÿž as I am thinking from fresh homemade bread would be good come this winter, and I could make it with less oil and sugar then many of the commercial breads. Not looking at recipes that much, but trying to learn how all the ingredients play together and alternative forms of bread, especially whole grains and oatmeal. ๐ŸŒฟ Thinking it would be good with a good split-pea or other homemade soup, or dipped in extra-virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Already using balsamic vinegar for acidity in many of my foods, it really gives a lot of meals a lot of extra flavor.

Back in 1967, the Yippies of Abbie Hoffman’s Youth International Party temporarily disrupts trading at the New York Stock Exchange by throwing dollar bills from the viewing gallery, ๐Ÿ’ต ๐Ÿคก ๐Ÿ’ธ causing trading to cease as brokers scramble to grab them. As they say, it’s all about the money. Or something like that Dan Halloran said in his bid to sell the NYC Mayorship. ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍โš–๏ธ Money matters a lot, it’s a way to get a lot of things done.

Weekend forecast is improving. โ˜บ Saturday, a slight chance of showers between 8am and 2pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 77. Northwest wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Maximum dew point of 65 at 11am. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 75. Maximum dew point of 59 at 12pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 81 degrees.

Looking ahead, there are 7 weeks until Columbus Day โ›ต ๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿ when the sun will be setting at 6:20 pm with dusk at 6:47 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly sunny, shallow fog and temperatures between 71 and 41 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 63 degrees. We hit a record high of 85 back in 1954.

Pond's Edge

The days go by too quickly it seems โŒ›

I was saddened, maybe even devestated to hear of John Wolcott’s passing while I was up in the wilderness, cut off from the news of the world. At one level I expected it sooner, he wasn’t well when I left for summer vacation and he hadn’t gotten better the last time I visited and I knew the end was near. And it was a cold and rainy four days, away from it all up at Piseco-Powley Road, though maybe it was good to be away from it all for four days before summer was done for good. No radio news, nothing up to date since leaving Thursday. Last summer weekend camping at least at Piseco-Powley though I might do an autumn trip and thinking Speculator for Labor Day Weekend. Can you believe it in two weeks?

Good afternoon! Partly cloudy and 74 degrees at the Herkimer Home Historical Site. โ›… There is a west breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 62 degrees.

I would have hoped for better weather for the weekend that was ๐ŸŒฆ๏ธ but I’m not surprised by rain every day with the summer that’s was and the forecast that degraded as the long weekend approached. There was some breaks of sunshine โ˜€ but most of the weekend was cloudy with times of rain, especially after dark but also each morning after I got up including take down take down day, earlier today. Cold and rainy. Not a wash out but at times I was glad I packed the propane heater it got a fair amount of use for August camping!

Fortunately I caught the impending rain โ˜” with the darkening skies and got the screen tent ๐ŸŽช, flags ๐ŸŽŒ and tarp down before they could get very wet. ๐Ÿ’ง Had a bit of sun today which is good for drying gear and as my starting and accessory batteries ๐Ÿ”‹ could use a good boost this morning as it’s been cloudy and I haven’t run my engine since Thursday. It was raining while driving down to Little Falls this afternoon but now it’s getting sunny and warmer.

This afternoon will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 78 degrees at 4pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 5th. Maximum dew point of 63 at 4pm. West wind around 8 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 93 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1937.

The rainy weekend did leave a lot of time for reading ๐Ÿ“– and playing around with cooking ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿณ some meals coming out better than others. Been trying to come up with filling meals that taste damn good, relatively easy to cook but also have less calories but more fiber and protein, along with essential vitamins. ๐Ÿ’Š Plus I have so much good farmers market ๐ŸŒฝ foods to eat up. The sweet corn ๐ŸŒฝ from Samdil’s was amazing as was the peaches ๐Ÿ‘ from Roger’s.

Took a few naps ๐Ÿ˜ด in the hammock besides reading, ๐Ÿ“– listening to podcasts and some bike riding ๐Ÿšฒ and hiking it’s been a very lazy weekend but I’m chocking it up to the weather. โ˜” Honestly though if it had been nicer it would have been a lazier weekend just floating on the tube โญ•. Let’s be honest. Still every day either walked at least five miles, rode 7 ยฝ or a combination of both. ๐Ÿšถ Do it’s not like I was just eating ๐Ÿด and sleeping. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Had some nice fires in part because it was so cold and rainy, smokey at times due to the wet wood.

Bike ๐Ÿšฒ and hiked part of the way back to both the swimming hole off Old Edick Road snowmobile trail on Friday and on Saturday did Goldmine Stream Falls. Lot of water ๐Ÿ’ฆ going over Goldmine Steam Falls. Thursday I rode up to Notch Mountain โ›ฐ and Friday also spent time at the Potholers but no swimming ๐ŸŠ due to it being very cold and the water levels dangerously high. I’ve never seen the Potholers so high in the summer months. ๐ŸŠโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Saturday night was the best night by far, stayed up until close to midnight watching the shooting stars โœจ from my hammock then listening to music ๐ŸŽถ down by the campfire ๐Ÿ”ฅ for warmth. Had a second beer ๐Ÿป and maybe a smoke ๐Ÿšฌ which is so uncommon these days since I’ve gotten into healthy eating in my forties. But also snacked on sweet corn ๐ŸŒฝ and peaches ๐Ÿ‘ by the fire. No more cookies these days, I go for natural fruits when I’m hungry. Greek yogurt too but not on Saturday. Switched on Country is so much funnier when your slightly stoned. ๐Ÿคช

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:04 pm with sun having an altitude of 59.5ยฐ from the due south horizon (-10.9ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:18 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (282ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (288ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:56 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 4 seconds with dusk around 8:24 pm, which is one minute and 34 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the west-southwest (246ยฐ) at an altitude of 14ยฐ from the horizon, 246,018 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:03 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 75 degrees. The dew point will be 64 degrees. There will be a west breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 47 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 40 seconds over yesterday.

Today out exploring Little Falls, Herkimer Home, Bike Path and Moss Island. ๐Ÿšฒ No set agenda, I’m just in the area until 6 pm or so when I’ll take NY 5S to Sprakers then down to Sloansville and US 20, maybe stop for ice cream ๐Ÿฆ and sweet corn ๐ŸŒฝ if I see a good place. I was surprised that Green Acres dinner and ice cream stand is still open in Dolgeville, I heard it’s closing but I’m not going back that way.

Tonight will have increasing clouds โ˜, with a low of 64 degrees at 6am. Four degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 64 at 7pm. Light northwest wind. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies. It was humid. It got down to 70 degrees. The record low of 42 occurred back in 1977.

The unavoidable truth is a five 5โƒฃ day work week ahead in the office ๐Ÿข as the head director is off for my unit, and as the deputy I have to step up and fill in for her role. It’s fine, but no more passing the buck, ignoring emails ๐Ÿ“ง and not taking immediate action on staff and inter departmental requests because I don’t want to step on the toes ๐Ÿ‘ฃ of the director. ๐Ÿ™ˆ It means no sneaking off to the woods this week. Promised my mom next week to do a clam bake for them too. ๐Ÿฆช Following weekend though probably head to Spectulator, maybe taking off that Friday or working remotely.

Need to order the bolt ๐Ÿ”ฉ and the tool to install the lost bolt on Blackie’s ๐Ÿšต rack. The zip tie was a good emergency fix but it still rattles and I’m not convinced that I should carry a lot of groceries on the rack with the loose bolt. Could fail under weight. ๐Ÿ Rather be safe then sorry and have groceries spill all over the road.

In 2014, seventy-two people are killed in Japan’s Hiroshima Prefecture by a series of landslides โ˜” caused by a month’s worth of rain that fell in one day. Reminds me of the some of the extreme rain we’ve been having lately.

I was sadden to learn of John Wolcott’s passing this afternoon ๐Ÿ˜ข while I was away from town at camp. ๐Ÿ‘ผ๐Ÿผ He was quite the man though I don’t know even half the story as so much of his memory had passed by the time I started interviewing him and going through his files. ๐Ÿ“‚ I do always wonder what was in his attic that burned in that fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ. I know after that fire I personally made sure to keep multiple off site back ups, scan in important documents and purge a lot of the paper ๐Ÿ“„ I owned. Never got to the really interesting stuff in his attic where the fire burned hottest. So much of the story untold. ๐Ÿ•ฏ

I’m glad I blog in part because it’s a way to ensure at least part of my story is told and can get found on the Way back Machine and the Internet Archives. ๐Ÿ–ฅ You never really know how long people’s lives will last, or the institutions and things around us. Here one day, gone the next. ๐Ÿ•Š Honestly I thought ๐Ÿ’ญ the news ๐Ÿ“ฐ would happen during summer vacation, though I’m glad I did spend a few afternoons with him at the hospital, took him around the Crossings and read to him before it was over. ๐Ÿฆ† ๐Ÿฆ ๐Ÿฆ‹ ๐ŸŽ I do wish I had found time to do that one more time before it was too late. ๐Ÿ™ I need to do better with my parents.

Looking ahead, there are 3 weeks until 6:30 Sunrise ๐ŸŒ‡ when the sun will be setting at 7:20 pm with dusk at 7:47 pm. On that day in 2022, we had mostly sunny, patches of fog and temperatures between 83 and 56 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 77 degrees. We hit a record high of 96 back in 1931.

Powley Bridge

A Monday morning as we enter the second half of August ๐ŸŒ…

The morning today is surprisingly dark but we’re losing daylight quickly this time of year and more clouds and rain drops then I would have expected from the initial forecast. I’m up and going a bit earlier than normal but it’s good to get a jump on the weekend and I was going.

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. Mostly cloudy with a few rain drops ๐Ÿ’ง and 63 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… It’s raining out again, so shocking. Calm wind. The dew point is 59 degrees.

Out for the morning walk ๐Ÿšถ. After breakfast ๐Ÿฅฃ and a shower ๐Ÿšฟ I’m thinking I’ll take Blackie ๐Ÿšต to work. Saves $2.60 in bus fares plus it’s a nice ride and it won’t be too hot or rainy today. Tomorrow it will be back on the express bus ๐Ÿš. I think taking Madison Ave from the bike path rather than Howard and Green and riding across the Plaza roads. ๐Ÿš˜ You’d think Howard would be a quiet side street but with all the parking garages it’s not and lower Madison has less traffic then you’d expect even at rush hour. Oatmeal soaked overnight with blueberries and chia seeds plus a little Greek yogurt for breakfast. Egg plant for dinner tonight. ๐Ÿ† I tried the oatmeal overnight thing on Saturday for the pancakes mix today doing it for actual cold oatmeal to eat this morning.

Today will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 80 degrees at 4pm. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around August 28th. Maximum dew point of 63 at 9am. Calm wind becoming west 5 to 8 mph in the morning. Good morning for riding Blackie ๐Ÿšต to work. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 82 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1988.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:01 pm with sun having an altitude of 61.8ยฐ from the due south horizon (-9ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:22 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (284ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (291ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:01 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 5 seconds with dusk around 8:29 pm, which is one minute and 26 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:09 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 74 degrees. The dew point will be 63 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Tomorrow will have 13 hours and 58 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 33 seconds over today.

It was a nice weekend โ˜บ but it came and went so quickly. Pretty evening up on Bennett Hill ๐ŸŒ‡ and it was nice seeing the folks. ๐Ÿ‘ช My pantry is well stocked ๐Ÿ and I was able to get some more reasonably well fitting clothes at the Salvation Army. Biking in the Pine Bush was nice and being able to use Blackie ๐Ÿšต to run to the bank and Walmart when I needed to without having to fire up Big Red. ๐Ÿ›ป I’d like to get some Balsamic Vinegar today and the nice thing about bicycle commuting is I can just stop along the way. ๐Ÿ›’

Tonight will have showers, mainly after 3am. The rain could be heavy at times. ๐ŸŒง Low of 65 degrees at 5am. Four degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 63 at 7pm. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ Calm wind becoming north around 5 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 58 degrees. The record low of 48 occurred back in 1964.

Back in 1962, Two gunmen hijacked a mail truck in Plymouth, Massachusetts, โœ‰ and made off with $1.5 million. Kind of a crazy story, they dressed up as construction ๐Ÿšง workers, barricaded off Interstate 495, took the unmarked mail truck ๐Ÿšš at gun point ๐Ÿ”ซ never to be seen again, leaving the Massachusetts State Police ๐Ÿ‘ฎ and the FBI with no answers. Everybody says it was an inside job but one seventy years nobody knows what happened to the money, ๐Ÿ’ต back when it was real money and just a typical retirement account.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, sunny, with a high near 81. Maximum dew point of 60 at 3pm. Sunday, sunny, with a high near 87. Maximum dew point of 63 at 11am. Typical average high for the weekend is 82 degrees.

Unfortunately Friday looks to be a bit wetter in the morning โ˜” and cooler with a high of 68 up north but Thursday will be closer to eighty and sunny ๐ŸŒž so I’m thinking about spending some quality time up at the Potholers ๐ŸŠโ€โ™‚๏ธ this weekend before summer is done, followed maybe on Sunday with paddling around Moss Island in Little Falls ๐Ÿ›ถ and riding some of the bike trail out that way.

And now something to look forward to next Monday is World Mosquito Day ๐Ÿž when the sun will be setting at 7:50 pm with dusk at 8:18 pm. On that day in 2022, we had hot, partly sunny and temperatures between 88 and 70 degrees. Mosquitoes have been bad this year, I might bring the mosquito tent ๐ŸŽช when I head north this weekend. Typically, the high temperature is 82 degrees. We hit a record high of 98 back in 1916.
