To ride the Erie Canalway in Madison County today ðŸšē

For many the extra hours is a chance to sleep in but I look at it as another hour to ride and explore the Erie Canalway today.

Good morning! Happy Sunday. Cloudy and 44 degrees at the Stoney Pond State Forest. ☔ Calm wind. Nice morning now that the rain showers have pulled away.

Started my morning with frying ðŸģ onions, spinach, garlic and peppers. And making eggs, dumping cinnamon rather than chipotle on them but actually I kind of liked the warm note the cinnamon gave to the eggs ðŸĨš. Experimenting isn’t a bad thing even if it’s driven by your half awake body. Coffee ☕ is good, with the intended cinnamon and ginger in it, lol 😂.

Bit cooler this morning then last night with the breeze picking up 🌎ïļ after that little clipper front came through delivering rain showers early on keeping me mostly in the truck bed 🛏 until closer to six though around five I got up and visited the bucket shitter ðŸš―. Eating breakfast this morning I watched a gray squirrel ðŸŋïļ run up the tree across the way and wonder why I wasn’t sitting next to my 22. Probably shouldn’t be shooting in a campground at any rate, especially as there are people camping down the way by the lake, but we used to shoot up here back in the day with the boys when I was working down in Nelson. Those were the days. ðŸ”Ŧ I was surprised that others are camping but they’re a Â― mile away and out of ear shot. 👂 Except maybe from a gun.

Today will have a chance of showers, mainly before 8am. Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny ðŸŒĨ 👉 🌞, with a high of 46 degrees at 1pm. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 23rd. Light west wind becoming northwest 5 to 9 mph in the morning. Chantce of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies. The high last year was 76 degrees. The record high of 75 was set in 1994. 3.0 inches of snow fell back in 1894.❄

Heading down to Chittenango to explore the Chittenango Landing Musuem, ðŸšĢ and ride the Erie Canalway west to Green Lakes area and then go west to Canastota. I was originally going to park in Canastota as I thought it was closer but I think I’d rather explore the other part of the trail as it seems more interesting. ðŸšē The Oneida – Canastota section pretty much just runs along the road that I’ve driven a million times when I was working up this way.

I could stop at the Aldi’s in Canastota this afternoon but I think I’m fairly set on overpriced groceries after visiting the Richmond Springs Price Chopper. ðŸ’ĩ It actually wasn’t that bad but I skipped getting peppers and broccoli ðŸĨĶ there as they were absurdly expensive. I skipped getting gas in Sharon Springs for $3.54 a gallon and was raked over the coals for gas at $3.79 in Richfield Springs â›― but I wasn’t messing around this time as I almost ran out of gas driving down to Binghamton two weeks ago. â›― Figured better just get r dun. It’s stupid to stress over $4 when your putting $80 in your truck. I got black sweet grapes 🍇 at Price Chopper hoping to capture some of that sweet flavor of the concord grapes I got last week at Annuto’s. Lol. 😂 Nope, maybe 20%, of the sweetness. Tomorrow I’ll probably check out the fancy Caz Aldi’s though.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 11:47 am with sun having an altitude of 31.5° from the due south horizon (-39° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 9.8 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 4:11 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (242°). ðŸ“ļ The sunset is in the west-southwest (249°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:52 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 7 seconds with dusk around 5:20 pm, which is one minute and 13 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 5:55 pm. Time change gets you! At sunset, look for partly clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 42 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 9 mph. Tomorrow will have 10 hours and 9 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 28 seconds over today.

Night is going to come quickly that’s why I am getting an early start 🌅 and have gathered firewood up for later. ðŸŠĩ🊓 This way it will have time to dry ☀ and I fully expect tonight I’ll be rolling back to camp about sunset 🌇 after riding the bulk of the day. Should be more sun later plus I get an extra hour with the time change. Need to shave, change and load my bike up but for now it’s nice by the heater. â™Ļ

Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌃, with a low of 33 degrees at 6am. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 10th. Northwest wind around 6 mph becoming calm. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It became somewhat humid as the night progressed. It got down to 67 degrees. Very mild night for November last year. I think I was in West Virginia then. The record low of 15 occurred back in 1951.

Yesterday was a fun day, ðŸšĩ especially riding back down Tassel Hill once I found the trail. Some of those drops on the single track trail with the hairpin switchbacks were a blast on the mountain bike. Nothing technical or jumps just a lot of fun. That said parts of the lower trail weren’t well marked leading me to have to stop 🛑 and sear he for the trail a few times. 🔎 🗚

Then I rode along the old Chenango Canal Towpath trail ðŸšē to the northern end or at least as far as I could go before downed trees blocked the northern end a bit past the substation. The northern end isn’t that impressive, ðŸļ it’s a ditch and a towpath along the County Highway known as Canal Road. Kind of rough and slow going on the grass, took the county highway back. I then rode down to Woodman Pond ðŸĶ† where there was a ton of geese. Nice section of the trail there though they resurfaced the old towpath there with fairly course gravel which made for more difficult riding.

Got to Stoney Pond by around 4:15 pm and I was disappointed to arrive to the campsite I like ⛹ and find a construction bag full of garbage and more garbage dumped in the woods. ðŸŒēðŸŒģ🗑ïļ Got the mess picked upand seperated out the deposit cans, â™ŧ and gathered firewood ðŸŠĩ🊓 for the night. ðŸ”Ĩ It was a beautiful night but dark, came so quickly by though. Very mild in the low fifties with a calm wind. This morning is cooler. Really wasn’t much garbage left by the time that rip roaring fire was done, the scraps of aluminum and cans I’ll take home crushed and recycle â™ŧ.

One month 📅 from now will be Repeal of Prohibition Day 🍚 when the sun will be setting at 4:30 pm with dusk at 5:00 pm. I don’t drink the way I used to due to health reasons but an occasional drink isn’t a bad thing, especially a real high quality brew.

 Finger Lakes Sunset

Last day of the year riding home from work at least at five o’clock ðŸšē

Doesn’t necessarily mean that I won’t still ride in the morning or if I can ask the big director to leave early occasionally I can leave early to ride home. But soon a lot more busing it home on the express hopefully! The authority is about to get rich on my back.

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Time to blow this town, head out to Mad County come Saturday. Kind of like West Virginia but with more cows and smaller hills and no coal fields but more manure. ðŸ’Đ Partly clear and 35 degrees in Delmar, NY. 🌅 There is a south-southeast breeze at 8 mph. 🍃. Going to need the gloves ðŸ§Ī for the ride in.

My arm is a bit sore 💊ðŸŧ feels like I spent the day at the range ðŸ”Ŧ from getting my COVID and flu jabs 💉 last night but I made up for it with a protein packed breakfast of eggs ðŸģ with edamame ðŸŸĒ, broccoli, onions and topped with lots of cottage cheese, tumeriac and nutritional yeast. Lunch is brown rice with lentils and even more edamame and tumeriac. 🍚 Got to have that protein to make my arm feel good. And coffee ☕ with cinnamon and ginger. Ginger and turmeric are supposed to reduce pain and aches. But I’ll be pissing like a cow in a pasture today. But then again tomorrow I’ll be heading to Madison County where they have a lot of them. ðŸŪ

Had a mouse 🐁 making a ton of noise last night after I got up to take a piss ðŸš― in part because I drunk extra water ðŸ’Ķ yesterday after getting vaxxed as recommended by the CDC to help with symptoms. I’m going to have to try the bucket trap again ðŸŠĪ or get more sticky traps as the spring trap isn’t working well as they keep picking the peanut ðŸĨœ butter off it. Plus my arm 💊ðŸŧ started to hurt a bit after waking up. Annoying as hell but I made up for it by sleeping into six. ⏰ No need to rush as the rice 🍚 doesn’t take as long as many of the soups I cook makes.

Got the space heater out yesterday. â™Ļ And also the heating pad and electric blanket though the later is not yet on my bed. 🛏 Only used the heating pad and space heater briefly the other night when my fingers were cold from riding home. Need to work on using some sealant tape around the door 🚊 to stop air leaks and put the storm windows 🊟 back in and lock the other windows for the winter. ❄ I think the cold season is back but just wait and we’ll have a heat wave 🌊 during this El Niño winter. ☀ Holding off on the central gas heat for now, as it’s not so cold plus the cooking each morning warms things up.

Today will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 55 degrees at 3pm. Not as cold mercury wise but it might feel colder with the wind. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 2nd. South wind 8 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Going to feel that wind riding home past Ezra Prentiss one last time before the time change. 🌎ïļ ðŸšē A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with sunny skies in the afternoon. The high last year was 68 degrees. The record high of 75 was set in 1990. 0.9 inches of snow fell back in 1951.❄

Why can’t we have such nice weather for the four 4âƒĢ days election weekend? ðŸ—ģ I stuffed my split ticket ballot ðŸ—ģ into the box so I’m free to head to Madison County to camp ⛹ and ride trail ðŸšĩ assuming that I can get the day off but it doesn’t look like a problem from the work calendar 🗓.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:40 pm with sun having an altitude of 32.4° from the due south horizon (-38.4° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 9.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 5:07 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (243°). ðŸ“ļ The sunset is in the west-southwest (250°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 5:47 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 5 seconds with dusk around 6:15 pm, which is one minute and 15 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 6:50 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 54 degrees. Breezy, 16 mph breeze ⛅ from the south. Tomorrow will have 10 hours and 15 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 31 seconds over today.

Got Udemy Business installed on my phone ðŸ“ą which allows you to take free online classes on a wide variety of technical ⚙ and computer ðŸ–Ĩ classes online with your library card ðŸ’ģ at least those libraries that offer it 📚 which looks like mostly just the Bethlehem Library locally. I’m enrolled in a class on the basics of remote sensing 🌎 which is about using satellites 🛰 to detect what is happening on earth’s surface. Interesting stuff so many great classes offered. 🧑‍ðŸŦ

I survived my vaxxing 💉 and while I noticed my shoulder was a bit sore 💊ðŸŧcome the middle of the night it was worth it to know I’m significantly protected from the latest in the COVID and flu strains. Took both shots to the left arm. It was a nice walk ðŸšķ to the pharmacy, and no I didn’t become autistic and stab myself with a knife ðŸ—Ą or go crazy ðŸĪŠ donate any money ðŸ’ĩ to Sandy’s Hookers Promise. Honestly the only side effect I’ve had feels like an afternoon at the range with the kick of a shotgun. With ammo I bought down at West Virginia, lol 😂. Don’t tell Governor Hokey that. She should be just proud that I got my jabs and now the geriatrics and mentally retarded immune suppressed children won’t die, or so we’ve been told. Actually at this point the pharmacy ⚕ isn’t even filling out the COVID cards ðŸŽī and it was quick in an out, no crowds or this fake bullshit vaccine patriotism of a few years back.

It was a pleasant evening for that walk. 🏃‍♀ïļ As I won’t be riding home after tonight, I should plan to start doing more evening walks. I think I got out of the habit after riding home and being tired, after having a good meal and wanting to retire to bed with a book. 📖 But I really need to start doing more steps if I’m riding less. Got home and shredded some apples in the food processor 🍎 with cinnamon and ginger, had a good glass of water ðŸĨ› and some yogurt in hope of avoiding the worse effects of the flu and COVID vaccine.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ðŸŒĨ, with a low of 38 degrees at 6am. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 27th. South wind 8 to 13 mph. In 2022, we had clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 46 degrees. The record low of 17 occurred back in 1951.

Normally I wouldn’t head out of town right after vacation ðŸ›ŧbut it’s November and rifle season starts in two weeks and it might be cold and wet next week though the forecast has improved recently. The other director is off around Thanksgiving ðŸĶƒ so that makes it difficult for me to extend that weekend plus I wouldn’t want to miss turkey day and we may have snow by then. Who know, winters coming. ☃ïļ

Tomorrow will be mostly cloudy ðŸŒĨ, with a high of 56 degrees at 4pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 31st. South wind around 7 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with sunny skies in the afternoon. The high last year was 71 degrees. The record high of 76 was set in 1994. There was a dusting of snow in 2006.❄

Looking ahead to Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 55. ☀ Calm wind becoming northwest around 6 mph in the afternoon. Definitely an improvement from a few days ago but maybe not quite as nice in Madison County That said if I can’t get Monday off its not the end of the world. Typical average high for the weekend is 54 degrees.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Buy Nothing Day 🛍ïļ when the sun will be setting at 4:27 pm with dusk at 4:57 pm (Standard Time). On that day in 2022, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 49 and 24 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 46 degrees. We hit a record high of 70 back in 2014.

Vlomans Kill

The great autumn road trip ends much like it started in the rain ☔

Good morning! Happy Sunday. Time to get up in a bit before it’s real wet then head home. Rain showers and 46 degrees at Long Pond State Forest in Smithfield Flats, NY. ☁ There is a north breeze at 8 mph. 🍃.

Back in New York State. I decided to drive all the way back to New York yesterday from Paw Paw as I figured it would mean back tracking to get back to Interstate 99 and heading north. ðŸ›Ģïļ Rain is expected before day break in Wellsboro so I figured that at any rate, not worth the back tracking and the $10 fee to camp in Pennsylvania. ⛹ At Long Pond State Forest which is two hours from home l figured that the rain would start later so maybe a quick breakfast and coffee ☕ ðŸĨĢ before the rain picked up.

Figured it would be interesting to come back via 81 and see at least the skyline of Hagerstown Maryland, Harrisburg, Wilkes Barre and Scranton Penna 🌆 but truth be told by the time I reached Hazleton it was dark, and from Hagerstown to the I-78 and I-81 split in Jonestown, traffic was much too heavy for ones eyes 👀 to leave the road for much scenic viewing. People often suggest taking Interstate 81 to West Virginia but I have to say at this point I don’t recommend it. 🚙 Too much traffic, especially truck 🚚 traffic compared to the leisurely drive along Interstate 99.

Truth is though I was bored with taking Interstate 99, I’ve done it several times in the past years to West Virginia. ðŸ—ŧ It’s scenic but after a while the towns are all the same. Somehow I was hoping that 81 would change things up. Same thing with US 6 in Penna. It’s slow, and long, the farms 🚜 and rural homesteads ðŸĄ 🐐 are still the same but with fewer burn barrels ðŸ›Ē as a decade or so ago. All that plastic shit stinks when you burn it, lol 😂.

Somehow I just had it in my mind that Interstate 81 would shave miles and hours off the trip. 🚘 But it’s really not that much of a time or milage savings. And while I’m only two hours from home compared to 3 1/2 that extra hour and a half got tacked onto yesterday’s drive, 🌃 meaning several hours of driving in the darkness and arriving at Long Pond State Forest at 8:30 pm rather than before six o’clock as I had planned. I had no cell service ðŸ“ķ in Paw Paw so it was just a wild assed guess on the distance to Asaph Run or County Bridge compared to Long Pond.

The moonlight helped, as did getting up and walking ðŸšķ around the rest area near Wilkes Barre and ultimately getting a box of five hour energy shots ðŸĪŠ which not only made me awake for driving kept me up half the night. Almost stopped and got dinner at Dennys in Hazleton but I decided I was running so far behind schedule, best to have some energy shots, hard boiled eggs and bananas and push forward. ☕ Regardless, I made it to camp safely and expect a nice drive the rest of the way home. 🙏

I was pretty wired from the energy shot ⚡ last night and it was a pretty evening with the full moon 🌕 so I stayed up to midnight.ðŸĶ† Listened to the geese well into the night honking and every time I walked to the lake the beaver ðŸĶŦ would jump back in with a big splash ðŸ’Ķ.

Today will have showers through 9 am, then rain after 10am. 🌧 High of 46 degrees at 6am. 10 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 23rd. North wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 63 degrees. The record high of 77 was set in 1946. 3.8 inches of snow fell back in 2011.❄

Coffee ☕ and cream of wheat is cooking on the stove. It’s now just the final two hours home ðŸĄ. Probably need to get a bit more fuel â›― and I’m likely going to stop and get apples 🍏 at Annuto’s in Oneonta. They open at nine 9âƒĢ but I don’t necessarily have to be there right at nine. And maybe other produce like Butternut Squash. 🍆 They have quite the selection of farm products. No doughnuts ðŸĐ though, even though they were good to start off vacation as a special treat. 😋

Then get home, unpack, shower ðŸšŋ for the first time in nine days 👃 and knead bread 🍞 and soak peas for pea soup. Maybe go to the laundromat and buy produce at Hannaford, or that could wait until Monday.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:40 pm with sun having an altitude of 34° from the due south horizon (-36.8° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 8.9 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 5:14 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (246°). ðŸ“ļ The sunset is in the west-southwest (253°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 5:54 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 2 seconds with dusk around 6:21 pm, which is one minute and 22 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the Waining Gibbous 🌖 Moon in the east-northeast (63°) at an altitude of 0° from the horizon, 235,306 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 6:56 pm. At sunset, look for rain 🌧 and temperatures around 43 degrees. There will be a north-northeast breeze at 6 mph. Tomorrow will have 10 hours and 27 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 36 seconds over today.

Rode about twenty miles of the Chesapeake and Ohio outside Paw Paw and then went into the village on my bike yesterday. Not a lot of note in the village that I saw but maybe I rode the wrong road. ðŸšē That said, the Paw Paw Tunnel is really neat. 🚉 Not only can you hike – bike the canal tunnel when I was there people were kayaking in it. ðŸ›ķ Rode 19 miles or about three hours including breaks. Stopped at the Capacon Overlook 🏞 after driving WV 9 which is as curvy as you might expect any good ol West Virginia road to be going through the mountains. Phil Ochs wasn’t wrong when he sung about the roads would wind and wind through the hills of West Virginia.

Tonight will have showers before 2am, then rain likely after 2am. Cloudy 🌧, with a low of 42 degrees at 7pm. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 14th. Calm wind becoming southeast around 5 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 28 degrees. The record low of 20 occurred back in 1969.

Next it’s watching the forecast for next week. ðŸŪ I’m still thinking about a trip out to Madison County either next week or the weekend after for four days, tacking a day onto the Election Day Weekend or Veterans Day Weekend. ⛹ I know it seems like it’s coming on right after vacation but rifle season ðŸĶŒ and Thanksgiving is right around the corner and who knows when we’ll get our first snowfall and those areas inaccessible. ðŸŒĻ Winter’s coming.

Looking ahead, there are 6 weeks until 7:15 AM Sunrise ⌛ïļ when the sun will be setting at 4:23 pm with dusk at 4:53 pm (Standard Time). On that day in 2022, we had mostly sunny skies and temperatures between 31 and 20 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 40 degrees. Winter’s coming. We hit a record high of 64 back in 1966.

The blog for the first month made a little over $80 a month or so worth in advertising. ðŸ–Ĩ Figuring th hosting and domains work out to $17 a month, its a nice little check. Won’t make me rich and it’s possible that I could potentially squeeze additional revenue by more obnoxious ads or changing the content on my blog but I want to maintain absolute editorial control over my blog. 📝 That’s one of the reasons I maintain a personal blog and don’t just do social media.

Oh, woah, woah, woah, it’s Friday 13th ðŸ‘ŧ

It’s a guess a spooky thing being October and Halloween in three weeks but whatever. Cold start to the morning but at least it’s clear and I’m out walking.

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday the 13th! Clear and 42 degrees in Delmar, NY. 🌞 There is a northwest breeze at 8 mph. 🍃.

Pumpkin – oatmeal pancakes ðŸĨž for breakfast. I also have a pot of rice and lentils cooking down ðŸē with lemon – pepper and garlic spice, I wanted a change from the split pea soup for lunch today. Yesterday dinner was tuna with spinach and whole wheat pasta. Haven’t had that in a while. 🐠 Always don’t like the carbs but the fatty fish with the healthy  omega-3 fats and vitamins and fiber from the spinach help balance that out. You need some fats to maximize fat-soluable vitamins. Also had a bit more kefir — it tastes like sour milk and is thick but it does help the stomach after all that pea soup I’ve been having the past few days.

Today will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 61 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 17th. Northwest wind 8 to 10 mph. A year ago, we had rain in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 70 degrees. The record high of 81 was set in 1930. There was a dusting of snow in 1934.❄

Caught two mice this morning. 🐭 It’s been kind of bad this year though not uncommon as the cold weather approaches. Probably my kitchen is a good place with all the dropping I’ve missed from all the cooking I do plus all those yummie smells 😋 from bread baking and food on the stove top full of spices. Eventually I’ll get all the mice and things will get better. Usually happens around November. ðŸšŦ Like a girl I ran outside with the second mouse I had with only a shirt and my boxers on, well oops. Not thinking, it’s cold! ðŸ˜Ū  That mouse got away, but outside. I should have crushed him, but I was half awake and my face full of shaving cream when I heard him get stuck. Big and fat sucker too. 🐁 Maybe pregnant, which is why I wanted him gone before her babes got breaking into my food and chewing my wires and holes in the walls of my apartment. People are shocked I still stay in my dumpy apartment that I’ve had since I was a researcher 16 years ago, but it’s cheap and I like the location. Plus I’m home so rarely. I’ll put up with the mice and rotting door and all the broken shit I have.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:42 pm with sun having an altitude of 39.7° from the due south horizon (-31.1° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 7.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 5:40 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (254°). ðŸ“ļ The sunset is in the west (260°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 6:18 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 56 seconds with dusk around 6:45 pm, which is one minute and 39 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 7:19 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 56 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 10 mph. Tomorrow will have 11 hours and 11 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 48 seconds over today.

Tonight will have increasing clouds ☁, with a low of 44 degrees at 4am. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 8th. Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph. In 2022, we had rain in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 42 degrees. The record low of 21 occurred back in 1958.

I was over at the dungeon yesterday, looking at all the snacks 🍎 in the break room realizing that there was nothing I could eat over there now that I’ve gotten into healthy eating. I’ll have to make sure to bring my own food over there in the future especially next year when I’ll probably spend a lot more time over there. Also yesterday I rode the elevator down one time for the first time since June as I had a meeting to go with a colleague but I did the stairs up and down like usual the rest of the day. Ridden back and forth to work so far three days this week for a total of 45 miles. ðŸšē Today I plan to ride in but may take the bus 🚍 home in the evening.

Tomorrow will have a slight chance of rain after 2pm. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a high of 59 degrees at 2pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 22nd. North wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had rain in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 67 degrees. The record high of 81 was set in 1920.

The weekend isn’t looking so bad at this point. ðŸĪ·‍♂ïļ But next week is still going to be quite cloudy and rainy, and much worse in West Virginia. 🌧 I definitely will be doing some riding this weekend. 🍏 I might ride out to Indian Ladder Farms and get some apples. I was thinking about going up to the Albany Pine Bush Preserve and then checking Salvation Army and Farmer India’s Market but I think I’m good for now. I might leave next week for West Virginia if the weather is good or possibly consider another trip, but I’m not going to take off time and get burned by the weather again this year. It’s the second time that this has happened in the past month, and it’s not fair to take off time then cancel it to the other director, lest she wants to take off time.

Looking ahead to Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 57. ☀ North wind 9 to 13 mph. Typical average high for the weekend is 62 degrees. Maybe a bit cool with the breeze, but it’s October so I’ll take it. Where to go is the question? I don’t plan to camp this weekend as last weekend I did Rensselearville State Forest. Maybe somewhere closer to home. Not sure.

One month 📅 from now the be Average Night will be Below Freezing 🌌 when the sun will be setting at 4:36 pm with dusk at 5:05 pm (Standard Time). Average high will be 50 degrees with a low of 32. We loose one hour and 41 minutes of daylight over the next month.

Every time I pass a cabin in the wilderness

Lately every time I pass a small hunting cabin up in the woods on a trail I have to stop briefly to observe it and reflect about my future in the wilderness. A simple time, one where I can enjoy the adventures of a more natural life in a place of my own free of all the distractions and tackiness of modern living. It often spurs me to see if I can somehow find more money to save and invest.

I really enjoy working with 12 volt power on my truck and would welcome the challenge of wiring a house with a simple 12 volt system. I could use boost and buck converters to power everything from my laptop to USB power ports through out. Maybe use an inverter to power a refrigerator but I want to avoid working with potentially much more dangerous 120 volts as possible. My focus would be on minimizing my consumption of power and energy as much as possible. I could build a custom highly efficient lighting system controlled by Bluetooth using common Chinese components you can order from the internet.

What I like about the hunting cabins is they are small and simple to clean. Muddy boots aren’t a problem. No hideous carpet. I’d rather have a floor you can shovel our like a barn – but maybe a gutter track is a step too far. Gawd I hate cleaning unless of course it involves hauling stuff out back and burning it. Plan to do that with a lot of junk when I have land. Everything is always dirty and needing cleaning in my apartment. I much rather have simple things to clean and a small space.

I would want to make sure that I had a well insulated building though, and an efficient modern wood stove. I like building fires and heating with wood give me such a chance. I also would want to have hot water primarily for showers but also for dishes. Got to be able to get cleaned and washed up. Paper plates are fine but hot water really helps with pots and pans. Instant on hot water heaters that run on propane are becoming common so that’s not a big deal. Having a good water supply is important as hauling water is a lot of work, but there are many ways to collect, pump purify water.

I’m totally fine with outhouses or a composting toilet system, they work fine as long as you keep them separate from water. I can always use a bucket shitter inside during the winter and dump it out in the outhouse in the morning. Shit doesn’t scare me.

I’d have a big fire pit out back for summer evenings out back enjoying the stars and so I could burn my own trash. It would be great to sit out back all summer long with starry skies. I’d crush and save up the tin cans and beer cans for recycling, maybe get a few bucks at the scrap yard and only take a small load maybe once a year to the transfer station. I hate landfills, this way I could have no part of them and get to play with fire to boot. As a single guy who doesn’t buy much in packaging it’s not like there would be that much to burn at any rate.

I can’t imagine I would ever have internet at home but I would most certainly have a smartphone for the necessary purposes and for updating my blog. I could always use a public library to connect to the internet to upload videos after work. And no I doubt I’d ever own a television as I hate staring at a screen watching a mindless program.

Cat Mountain Cabin to be demolished by DEC

Here is some random financial advice that the good ol’ boy came up with …

I Am Happy For The Sun

1) Debt is evil, don’t make it.
If you can’t afford to buy something with cash, you can’t afford it. Your poor. Be a grown up and accept that fact.

2) Live in poverty.
It’s always bad to have money in your bank account, because it doesn’t earn much interest and means it will get spent on things that you’ll spend later to get rid of at the landfill. I rarely have more then a $1,000 in the bank, because I’d rather live paycheck-to-paycheck, knowing that every time I look at my bank account I can’t afford to buy junk. Lock the rest of the money up in investments and savings accounts, the later that offers more flexibility during emergencies and for buying bigger purchases after a few years.

 Landfill

3) Remember 90% of things you buy are going to either become poop or smell like burnt plastic in the burn barrel within 2 weeks of buying it.
While we all like playing with fire, watching things melt, and colorful flames, buying things to set on fire is a waste of money. So in other words, don’t buy it.

4) Do antagonize over $20 purchases.
Little things add up quickly. Do you really need it? Anything that is non-essential should not be purchased — even if you like watching plastic melt and burn.

Burning the Morning's Garbage Up

5) Don’t take a raise — or at least the majority of a raise.
Rather then taking a raise, use automatic deposits to savings accounts, 401ks, IRAs, or any other vehicle that defers the money to make raise never appear in your bank account rather then take it and spend it.

6) Always look for lower-cost ways of doing things.
Does the government offer the service for free or low-cost? Public libraries, public transportation, and public forest lands are free (or low cost) for your use and enjoyment.

North Harmony State Forest

7) Try to save more then you spend each week.
If you take home $1,300 then invest $700 of that check a wide variety of ways. It’s okay to withdraw money every few years for a big purchase, but at least you’ll be getting a better deal then most by buying it with money that has earned compounded interest rather then paying finance charges.

8) Sales are horseshit.
Buying things on sale usually is a bad way to save money on the purchase, unless you’ve been deferring a necessary purchase for a number of months.

Happy !!

9) Celebrate when the stock market goes down.
It means you can buy more stock for less money. Stock paper is just that — it has no value until you it cash it in. You shouldn’t give a rats ass about the stock market going down — except to look forward to the deals you are going to get. You shouldn’t be buying stock paper unless it’s for long-term goals, that can be sold when the market is booming.

10) Cheap, diverse investments are better then expensive ones.
Self-investing in boring, uninteresting broad-based funds are better. If you don’t understand an investment, then you shouldn’t be investing it. Have a dozen different ways of investing with different banks, different funds, and different investment types. It’s good to bet against your own investments with mutually opposing investments. If one thing goes bad, you’ll have other things to fall back.

11) Keeping buying a little bit of your investments each week, when you get paid.
The fancy financial types call this cost-based-averaging. It’s also not bad idea to wait until the market drops back down and convert some savings to stock, but be patient and wait for a good drop in the market. When people have been panicking on Wall Street for a week, that’s a good time to drop that $5,000 or $10,000 you don’t really need and toss it in the market for the hell of it — knowing that you might never get the money back — but you might also make out well.

Republican Sherriff Target Practice?

12) Pretend money in retirement accounts and stocks, unmature certificate of deposits is totally inaccessible and for all intents and purposes does not exist.
I mean I think have a ballpark idea what is in my investment accounts, but I don’t really give that much of dang, because it changes every day. I’m betting that in 20 years it will be a bigger amount. And for all intents and purposes, stock paper is an imaginary money — as stock paper has zero value until you cash it out.

With the oatmeal pancakes off on this mid-September morning ðŸĨž

The sun is rising and it’s going to be a nice day. While I prefer to walk before eating breakfast it’s too dark now. Just got to moderate the coffee.

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Partly sunny and 55 degrees in Delmar, NY. 🌅 Calm wind. The dew point is 52 degrees.

Well rested, feeling good this morning. 🛏 This week on many levels has been a struggle but the good sleep and sun with low humidity this morning helps a lot. Much more energy ⚡ this morning and less achy compared to a rainy day like yesterday. Trying to cut back on the coffee ☕ in the morning, even though I get up early and drink more water ðŸĨ› in the evening like the doctor says. 🧑‍⚕ïļ

Today will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 70 degrees at 2pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 26th. Maximum dew point of 54 at 9am. Light northwest wind increasing to 5 to 10 mph in the morning. Relief from last week’s humidity. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 79 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 1931.

Should be a great day, ðŸšē looking forward to the bike ride to work today. I think with the chain 🔗 well lubricated and the gears indexed ⚙ it should be a nice commute. None of that sitting in the shitty traffic yesterday on the bus 🚍 just waiting to get home. ðŸĄ Heck of it is by afternoon it wasn’t bad out and I probably could have almost beat the bus home on my bicycle and gotten free exercise to boot. ðŸ‘Ē

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:52 pm with sun having an altitude of 50.9° from the due south horizon (-20° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 4.9 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 6:32 pm with the sun in the west (269°). ðŸ“ļ The sunset is in the west (276°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:09 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 55 seconds with dusk around 7:36 pm, which is one minute and 47 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 8:11 pm. Today will have 12 hours and 36 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 51 seconds over yesterday.

Remembered last night that I had egg plant 🍆 in the fridge so with mini onions and potatoes, ðŸĨ” and the last of the olive oil plus some garlic and seasoning made up a good dinner in the broiler. Last night I pulled salmon out of the freezer and that should be defrosted for dinner tonight. Also cooking down kidney beans this morning for dessert or maybe just a side this evening. Also good go bring up to camp this weekend. 🍚

Tonight will be mostly clear 🌃, with a low of 49 degrees at 6am. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 24th. Northwest wind 5 to 9 mph. Temperatures in the forties are a true sign of autumn coming. . In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 51 degrees. The record low of 33 occurred back in 1975.

Tonight it’s off to Walmart and get supplies 🛒 and rack up more on my credit card ðŸ’ģ after retiring the debt this week. Really need more good fitting jeans 👖 now that the weather is cooling, refill my pantry ðŸĨŦ and look at food processors as my mini chopper after working a bit more has quit again. I’ve been overloading it I think, I really need something more powerful especially when I’m grinding and milling so many foods. Plus soon after I go apple 🍏 picking with dad I’m going to need to be able to process a lot of apples.

Cloudy ⛅ and blustery come the weekend especially Saturday from the hurricane 🌀 off the coast. Saturday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 71. Northwest wind 14 to 16 mph. Maximum dew point of 51 at 12pm. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 76. Maximum dew point of 56 at 4pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 75 degrees.

It’s been quite a week ⛹ and I’m looking forward to getting out of town for a couple of days even if it’s going to be quite a windy day on Saturday and cloudy, maybe a bit cool. But I just need some quiet and time away from all this crap ðŸ’Đ of the week that was. Then I guess apple 🍏 picking with my parents on Sunday.
