As the protests chanted, “Nobody Died When the Weatherman Lied” ๐ŸŒซ๏ธ โœŠโ˜น๏ธ

Yesterday was not nearly as nice as the weatherman had argued it should have been. At times it was downright chilly outside. But it was a nice afternoon to spend out in country over at old friend’s homestead picking his brain on how he financed and put together his 10-acres of land with a beautiful farm house and barn from the 1820s. It was chilly and cloudy, as today also will be, but not so cold. I left the windows open last night, after I the smoke alarm went off again, but I’m hopeful to keep the windows open for most of the rest of the summer at this point. Only a few more weeks that there is a good chance of freezing weather.

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. ๐Ÿ™€ Mostly cloudy and 41 degrees in the land of the Delmartian, as I get ready to ride to work. โ˜ Calm wind. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Friday around 4 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Well maybe not a beautiful day today, โ˜๏ธ it should be good for riding to and from work. I want to bring my new artwork into the office ๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ but I’ll wait until a rainy day later in the week when I either take the bus or drive in. ๐Ÿš˜ I realized I need some more eggs ๐Ÿฅš and I should get some kind of candle warmer plate. I couldn’t find it in Walmart the other day but looking online, they have them in-store for $10 but I didn’t know the aisle. ๐Ÿ•ฏ Yes, the use electricity, but they don’t charge me for that at work, lol. Working above a printing plant sometimes smells like sulfur. ๐Ÿ‘ƒ You know, like Ticonderoga or Plattsburgh.  Same thing for the brighter 200-watt light bulb I got for my desk, ๐Ÿ’ก though it’s an LED bulb so it only uses 27-watts and is replacing the 60-plus watts of hideous overhead florescent lighting. ๐Ÿ›‹ So far I haven’t been asked to give back the lamp, but I was looking at Walmart, and they have many attractive desk lamps for sale, as will garage sales and paces like the Salvation Army should I have to give back the seemingly forgotten lamp I found covered with dust in the closet.

Today will have patchy dense fog before 9am. ๐ŸŒซ Otherwise, mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a high of 55 degrees at 1pm. 14 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 6th. Maximum dew point of 47 at 1pm. Light and variable wind becoming south 5 to 10 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had light snow in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 37 degrees. The record high of 59 was set in 1919. 8.3 inches of snow fell back in 1971.โ„

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:08 pm with sun having an altitude of 41.2° from the due south horizon (-29.7° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 6.9 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 5:12 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (256°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (263°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 5:50 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 55 seconds with dusk around 6:17 pm, which is one minute and 13 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 6:50 pm. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies โ˜ and temperatures around 54 degrees. The dew point will be 47 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 11 hours and 27 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over yesterday.

I plan to start my deep dive into the land ๐Ÿค  today, and am going to try to write some code to analyze parcels based on steepness of slope and direction of slope. Both of those have significant impacts on the ability to build and homestead on the land, plus I want to make sure if I do build a house ๐Ÿ‘ท that it’s built in a place that is resistant to excessive rainfall, that is certain to happen with the warming climate. ๐ŸŒ๏ธ Also want to take a deep dive into CAD, and try to get to place were I can at least sketch out a house plan. Really want to go simple and low resource when I build, not so much as a cost measure but for sustainability and simplicity purposes — I want to spend the money up front and then have minimal out-year costs for maintenance and repair. That said, despite being conditionally approved for an excessively large mortgage to buy a conventional house, I am increasingly thinking about buying with cash ๐Ÿ’ต and knowing my land and house is paid off and cheap to operate. Utility bills and repairs on my house scares me the most about it, more then the up-front cost. Plus I just hate how everything is plastic now. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Have you ever burned plastic? Shit stinks and burns so black, especially some of common materials used these days.

Tonight will have a chance of rain after 5am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 42 degrees at 5am. 19 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 27th. Southeast wind 8 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2023, we had light snow in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 33 degrees. The record low of -12 occurred back in 1948.

I really enjoyed meeting up with that friend of twenty years ago ๐Ÿ˜ and learning more about how he obtained his homestead. It’s a ways out from the city, but it is a wonderful 10 acres and an beautiful old 1820s house. I really miss being out in the country, in the hilltowns. โ›ฐ Since I got my big jacked up truck, and well the burn ban, I don’t cruise the backroads like I once did. ๐Ÿ”ฅ He built quite the life for himself and his family. While I am still stuck, for now, in the suburbs in my dumpy apartment. Not that my dream off-grid cabin is what many people would call high-class living, but I won’t be paying rent and I’ll be able to do my thing, have fires, listen to the frogs on a warm summer night. ๐Ÿธ And see the mountains every day driving to and from work.

Today in 1985, Food and Drug Administration approves a blood test for AIDS infection, used since then for screening all blood donations in the United States. ๐Ÿฉธ In 1917, Jeannette Rankin of Montana becomes the first female member of the United States House of Representatives. ๐Ÿ›๏ธ Pretty remarkable that was only about 100 years ago. And in 1957, S&P 500 stock market index is introduced, replacing the S&P 90. ๐Ÿ“ˆ The market opened at a ceremonial $17.75 and at this point is well over 1,000.

Not a particularly nice weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜ž Saturday, a chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 46. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Sunday, rain likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 44. Chance of precipitation is 60%. The likelihood of camping this weekend seems fairly low. Maybe another good weekend to red and study about buying land, and continue my research. Typical average high for the weekend is 43 degrees.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until April Fools Day ๐Ÿคก when the sun will be setting at 7:23 pm with dusk at 7:50 pm (Daylight Savings Time). On that day in 2023, we had rain and temperatures between 74 and 41 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 52 degrees. We hit a record high of 77 back in 1986.

Under a cloud

It’s good I took the long way to work ๐Ÿšฒ

Erie Boulevard was closed under Interstate 90 due to a water main break or maybe bridge work. I don’t know, I was running a bit early and I figured it would be a nice day for a longer ride via the Menands Exit. Figure extra riding in the morning means less I need to do come the evening after work.

Good morning! Mostly sunny and 31 degrees in North Albany, NY. There is a south breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ.

Got up early ๐Ÿ˜€ and rode in early, in part to take advantage of the nice day and because I was up early, as I didn’t sleep well. ๐Ÿ’ค Not sure why I didn’t sleep well, maybe because it’s I’ve had so much to think about in recent weeks. ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ At least my office has unlimited free coffee โ˜• which is a big benefit over working at Alfred E Smith Building, which had a coffee club but I never joined. I bring in my own skim milk with mint extract, rather then use creamer. Sometimes if I’m feeling healthy wanting less calories, ๐ŸงŠ I’ll go the route of just adding ice — we have an ice machine here — and then add vanilla, cinnamon and ginger I have in my desk.

Fresh bread ๐Ÿž and baked butternut squash ๐Ÿ† this morning, was cooking in the oven and on the stove ๐Ÿฅž was johnnycakes with lots of onion, shredded broccoli, spinach, and topped with cottage cheese for protein. A good start to the morning, after a bit of a rough night sleeping. ๐Ÿ›Œ Because I was listening to podcasts in the wee hours of the morning, and then reading for a bit ๐Ÿ“š๏ธ I got all of the advertising for mattresses and BetterHelp every commercial break while I was riding into work listening to Fresh Air. I am not sure I like the idea of mental help over the internet or phone ๐Ÿ“ž , I feel like you miss something when you can’t get people’s facial expressions and be in the same room with them. That said, that licensed mental health professional I saw a few years ago was downright creepy in the basement of a run-down office building on the outskirts of town. But then again, I guess talking about your thoughts is a bit creepy too. ๐Ÿ‘จ‍โš•๏ธ What, I just like burning shit and need to move back out to country. ๐Ÿšœ ๐Ÿ”ฅ  Freedom, baby.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 46 degrees at 4pm. Six degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 18th. South wind 8 to 10 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, which became light snow by afternoon. The high last year was 39 degrees. The record high of 66 was set in 2017. 10.7 inches of snow fell back in 2005.โ„

I am moved into my new private office ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐Ÿ’ผ which I’ve grown to like more and more now that I’m out of the temporary cubicle and made it more homey with a desk lamp that I found in the closet, my plants, and some other random decorations from my old office. I still have a lot of empty wall space, but I will be filling that with several photos and posters in the coming week, I am getting them delivered on Saturday and will pick up frames. I have two large pictures from West Virginia and a 24×34″ color aerial photo of the Capital Region that I plan to frame and hang in my office ๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ next week the next time I drive in or take the bus — probably next Wednesday when it rains. ๐ŸŒง๏ธ I am also thinking of getting a candle warmer, and one of those sent candles ๐Ÿ•ฏ to make my office smell good, ๐Ÿ‘ƒ especially if I have too many beans ๐Ÿซ˜ for lunch or track in manure ๐Ÿ‘ข when I have my homestead. Also a brighter bulb ๐Ÿ’ก for the desk lamp — Walmart has super bright 200 watt equivalent LED bulbs. I should bring in my desk fan, should be hot in here come the summer. ๐Ÿ˜… I want my office to be a calming place when the shit starts to fly in the data world, you know when the SQL query breaks. ๐Ÿ”ข Still don’t know if I can technically keep the lamp, it might belong to a different department, but it was in the closet collecting dust. ๐Ÿ›‹ If I have to buy my own lamp, then so be it.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:09 pm with sun having an altitude of 40° from the due south horizon (-30.8° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 7.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 5:08 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (254°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (261°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 5:46 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 56 seconds with dusk around 6:13 pm, which is one minute and 14 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 6:47 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 44 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 11 hours and 18 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 51 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have increasing clouds โ˜, with a low of 30 degrees at 2am. Eight degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 27th. South wind around 10 mph. Stlll not bad, not warranting turning the heat back on, as things will stay warm enough over night. In 2023, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 35 degrees. The record low of -04 occurred back in 1940.

Tomorrow will rain, mainly after 8am. ๐ŸŒง High of 45 degrees at 3pm. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 15th. South wind 6 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, which became light snow by afternoon. The high last year was 41 degrees. The record high of 65 was set in 1991. 11.9 inches of snow fell back in 2018.โ„

Looking ahead to Sunday, mostly cloudy, ๐ŸŒฅ with a high near 58. North wind around 6 mph. Typical average high for the weekend is 40 degrees. Sunday looks like a nice day for a ride, or maybe driving around in countryside, trying to carefully observe various properties. ๐Ÿ˜ I want to learn more how people live, what are realistic options, and not be stuck with the suburbanite crap.

I was sort of hoping to get out camping this weekend, ๐ŸŒง๏ธ but not with the rain expected. It will be a good weekend to research property some more ๐Ÿ˜ ๐ŸŒฒ๐Ÿ”  and do some reading on buying land. I am not rushing things at this point, but I also don’t want to give up the goal. ๐Ÿฅ… I just want to make the right decision. Plus get caught up on sleep after last night’s bad night in bed. ๐Ÿ›Œ I actually don’t know why I was so troubled by sleeping, I have my nice new office to work from today. I am going to text my friend from Boy Scouts tonight ๐Ÿ“ฑ to see if he will be available this weekend. I’d love to learn more about how he financed and rebuilt his homestead. At this point, I’m just trying to sift through all the details. ๐Ÿง

Looking ahead, there are 2 weeks until Ides of March โœ when the sun will be setting at 7:03 pm with dusk at 7:30 pm (Daylight Savings Time). Friendly strangers in black sedans be liking that day. ๐Ÿ–ค On that day in 2023, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 37 and 29 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 45 degrees. We hit a record high of 72 back in 2019.

Snow from Acra Point

Sunny and cold this President’s Day ๐ŸŒž

After a rough night last including many trips too the bathroom after eating too much red lentil soup and beans, and then the smoke alarm going off at 3 AM, I’m up and going this morning. Started out my day stocking up my pantry with fruits, vegetables and other healthy eats for the week to come. A barely sub-$100 grocery bill, though not by much, but I’ve finally gotten to the point where my pantry had a few things left over from last week, and most of the unhealthy stuff from a year ago is now gone.

Good morning! Sunny and 26 degrees in Delmar, New York. ๐ŸŒž I wonder how many more times I’ll be saying that. It’s weird to think it might be coming to an end. Cool and blustery with a northwest breeze at 14 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. There is a dusting of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ Things will start to thaw out at tomorrow around noontime. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

It’s beautiful out today, but with the wind is fairly cold. ๐ŸŒฌ I’m actually not rushing to get out too soon, as I’m really hoping to speak to my new landlord again, about the questions and concerns I politely raised in an email on Saturday, โœ‰๏ธ that he has not replied back to. I would feel much better if I had contact information, and if I could pay him via a mailed paper check, where the paper trail is clear in case of dispute of payment. ๐Ÿ’ต Maybe I’m too fearful of him, but he reminds me of kid who beat the shit out of me in high school. ๐Ÿ‘Š You know, the kid who barely made it out of high school, and floats from job to job in the construction industry and on and off the unemployment rolls as his parents a dying from alcoholism and decades of chain of smoking. I feel rather sorry for him, as I think he’s become a really decent person even if he smashed my nose into the locker multiple times back in the day. I also am waiting for calls back from various mortgage loan officers, ๐Ÿ“ž and want to talk to some friends out in the country ๐Ÿฎ who have bought homes in recent years, and want to get their advice and tips.

Washington’s Birthday will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 31 degrees at 4pm. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical Northwest wind around 14 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 47 degrees. The record high of 66 was set in 1981. 11.4 inches of snow fell back in 1972.โ„

I do want to get out and do some hiking this afternoon, ๐Ÿšถ‍โ™€๏ธhiking up Bennett Hill or maybe Wolf Hill. It’s sunny out but cold. But I need some of serenity of the wilderness, even if for only a few hours. ๐ŸŒฒThings are so crazy these days. ๐Ÿคช Then head out to the folks for Sunday dinner. ๐Ÿ‘ช It’s important to talk to as many people and listen to as much advice as possible. ๐Ÿ‘‚ Time isn’t as tight and things aren’t as awful as I imagine them to be in my darker moments, but change is happening, and it’s happening much too fast. โŒ› With the stock market, my portfolio is good, and high interest rates may work in my favor, as I can offset more capital gains taxes from selling stocks in good market by using the mortgage tax exemption. ๐Ÿ“œ God, that makes me feel old.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:10 pm with sun having an altitude of 36° from the due south horizon (-34.9° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 8.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:53 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (249°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (255°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 5:32 pm after setting for 3 minutes with dusk around 6:00 pm, which is one minute and 16 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous ๐ŸŒ” Moon in the east (100°) at an altitude of 54° from the horizon, 243,483 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 6:34 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 29 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 10 hours and 47 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 43 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 15 degrees at 6am. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around February 4th. Maximum wind chill around 17 at 6pm; Northwest wind 6 to 10 mph. In 2023, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 35 degrees. The record low of -16 occurred back in 1966.

Tuesday it’s back to work. ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐Ÿ’ผ I may drive in so I can retreat to my truck should bankers call to discuss mortgages, as I don’t have my private office yet, as the retiring director has a few more weeks left, though not much. It will be quite the operation to take over, and while I’ve learned a lot in these past 6 weeks and I have the skills to be an excellent leader, it’s scary, not least to say, as I’m replacing 40 plus years of experience. ๐Ÿ™€ But I have an excellent team I’m working with who will support me, and the reason why they trust me in such a place of high authority, is because I’ve delivered 16 1/2 years of results for my business. Still, it’s a big jump from being Deputy Director to Director, in an agency that doesn’t have deputy to fall back on. My bosses will just be several miles of up the road, and always there to support me, email and phone aren’t the same as sitting down in a room together. ๐Ÿ‘” I might wear a suit and tie, but still a redneck inside. But I believe in myself and my future. Things could go terribly wrong, but I have a track record of success, and preponderance of the evidence is that I will do exceptionally well in the new position, especially with my knowledge of the R programming language, Unix shell scripting, C programming and technical aspects of Data Services.

Looking ahead to next weekend, it could be real nice. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 31. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 39. It’s early in the week, so I’ll take a wait and see approach. Go camping? ๐Ÿ• Who knows how busy I will be with the next steps in my life. ๐Ÿ‘ฃ Typical average high for the weekend is 38 degrees. Now we’re in the second half of February, things warm up quickly.

One month ๐Ÿ“… from now will be Last Day of Winter ๐Ÿ‚ when the sun will be setting at 7:08 pm with dusk at 7:35 pm (Daylight Savings Time). The average high temperature is 47 degrees, with a record high of 78 in 2021.

Hill Above Camp Cass

One more nice day before the snow ๐ŸŒž

Monday, Monday. Riding to work and enjoying it before the snow comes and takes over the land again during this mid-February Valentine’s Day Week. Then a three-day weekend, though it might be cool and snowy so who knows about Madison County come Friday.

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. Cloudy and at the freezing point in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a northwest breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Going to warm up as the day progresses, with the skies clearing around noontime. Not a terrible day ahead, though the morning will be cloudier and tomorrow will snow.

Oatmeal pancakes with shredded orange ๐Ÿฅž ๐ŸŠ made for a delicious ๐Ÿ˜‹ start to the morning today. Topped with lots of blueberries I will note. ๐Ÿซ I know I’m waiting for the inevitable blood sugar crash ๐Ÿ“‰ though I’m hopeful that the protein in the egg plus the mixture of oatmeal, shredded orange including the peel and whole ๐ŸŒพ flour will help slow the crash. Didn’t use any maple ๐Ÿ syrup today, the blueberries were plenty of sugar, lol. ๐Ÿ˜‚

I figure today’s the day to ride to work if any day this week. ๐Ÿšฒ ๐Ÿ‘‰ ๐ŸŒจ Tomorrow is going to be quite snowy, so it will be back to busing it back and forth to work. ๐Ÿšตโ€โ™€๏ธ And after the snow tomorrow, the rail trail will be likely impassable for several days, โ›„ and while I could take Corning’s Hill and South Pearl to work, it’s going to be cold plus the shoulder of the South Pearl near the Port is a muddy rough mess. Not to mention, Wednesday looks like it will be quite cold. โ„๏ธ I do need to call the bike shop and ask about a tune up for the bike ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ”ง and getting those gears really tight and working well before spring comes and appointments with the bike mechanic get really hard to get. As I ride my bike nearly every day, I want to keep it running in top condition.

Today will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 42 degrees at 2pm. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 6th. Northwest wind 5 to 7 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies. The high last year was 47 degrees. The record high of 55 was set in 1932. 13.5 inches of snow fell back in 1988.โ„

On the way in, I got to stop at Hannaford โค๏ธ ๐Ÿฌ and get some candy to hand out in the office for Valentines’ Day. As the director now, I have to make sure I have little trinkets to give away for holidays and special occasions to reward staff. ๐ŸŽ Nice little gestures. I know that’s what they did for years when I was just staff and deputy management, but being I’m now the big man in town, I got to make sure to plan to do such things going forward. ๐ŸŽ‚ Also need to look up my staff’s birthdays and make sure to have cake or cookies for each of their birthdays. Figure I should budget about $20 a month for that. Even if I don’t eat cake and sweets anymore, I know a lot of people like that kind of thing. ๐Ÿช It’s a nice gesture and important for a successful office.

Been exploring more of the free resources of the Bethlehem Public Library, ๐Ÿ“š namely E-Books borrowing using the Libby app that let’s you read ๐Ÿ“– and listen to audio books for free on your phone or Kindle if you have such technology. Mom was going to give me her old Kindle but I struggled to understand how the technology works ๐Ÿ“ฒ and after cussing it out ๐Ÿคฌ I think it might be too old of a model. At any rate, I think it easier to read E-Books on my phone with the Libby app which saves them on the phone so I can use it offline in the remote Adirondack country. That said, I’ll probably use the audio books even more ๐Ÿ“ผ as I can listen while riding my bike ๐Ÿšฒ or by the campfire ๐Ÿ”ฅ. I figure with my taxes so damn high, I best use every free government service out there – be it the state forests, free guided hikes, lectures, nature bus, bike trails etc.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:11 pm with sun having an altitude of 33.6ยฐ from the due south horizon (-37.3ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 9 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:43 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (245ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (252ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 5:23 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 3 seconds with dusk around 5:51 pm, which is one minute and 18 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent ๐ŸŒ’ Moon in the west-southwest (238ยฐ) at an altitude of 30ยฐ from the horizon, 226,878 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 6:25 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 39 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 6 mph. Tomorrow will have 10 hours and 31 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 39 seconds over today.

Groceries were another $120 this week, ๐Ÿคฏ which is more pain on the budget, but I did also buy some more loaf pans and knife sharpener. Eating all those fresh fruit and vegetables really adds up. ๐ŸŽ And it’s not like things are going to waste, ๐Ÿšฏ by the end of last week my freezer was mostly empty except for camping ice, but between inflation and everything else it adds up. Sunday night dinner was a really nice tomato ๐Ÿ… bean soup with the family ๐Ÿ‘ช, I made some of my onion๐Ÿง… and carrot bread ๐Ÿฅ• to share. Took home leftovers, been slowly but surely eating up what’s in the freezer in an effort to cut my grocery costs. ๐Ÿ›’ Inflation sucks and I make good money ๐Ÿ’ต these days but it doesn’t go very far anymore. Maybe it’s because I’m so committed to saving and investing in my future, ๐Ÿ”ฎ but I find it hard to make ends meet during these inflationary times.

I don’t even want to think about my $530 car insurance bill due the end of March or my taxes ๐Ÿฆ which I haven’t started yet. I’ve been withholding extra out of each paycheck, ๐Ÿ“‚ which I’m hoping will help ensure I don’t owe a shit ton come April 15th. I got to figure out which service to use — I’ll probably use a Free-file site for my federal taxes, then copy that information onto a state tax form, and mail it in like I did last year. Hopefully not mess it up this time, and get a letter from State Tax Department. I hate filing taxes, especially when the government already knows how much money I make ๐Ÿ” as they get copies of my tax documents from my employers, banks, and vendors already. Thanks tax-vendor-software lobbyists and corporations. ๐Ÿ•ดLife has gotten so damn expensive these days.

Tonight will have a chance of snow, mainly after 4am. Increasing clouds ๐ŸŒจ, with a low of 30 degrees at 5am. 13 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 27th. North wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. In 2023, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 24 degrees. The record low of -18 occurred back in 1875.

Yeah, I got to turn the heat back on tonight. โ™จ๏ธ It’s been nice the few days with the heat off and the windows open. No electric blanket use either. I’ve been using the electric blanket a lot more this year, but not he past few nights. My electric bill has come down somewhat, ๐Ÿ”Œ as I’ve not made as many soups and beans on the stove top, and have been making sure my oven is fully packed ๐Ÿž when baking bread, to get as many meals as possible out of each time things are cooking in the oven. I like cooking ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿณ but it can get pricey at times buying those whole-food type ingredients, which really can be a lot more expensive when added up then the packaged processed crap I used to buy a lot more of when I was fat. ๐Ÿคฐ

Hopefully now with that cable I bailed out from the post office ๐Ÿ”Œ โŒจ I’ll be able to use that USB switch I bought two weeks ago, to switch between my laptop and work PC seemlessly when I get into the office. Otherwise I’m out $17 and a lot of aggravation, but it seems like the switch is working well when I tried it with the one cable it originally came with and the second cable I bailed out due to insufficient postage by the seller seems to be working fine. We’ll see when I get to the office this morning I guess. ๐Ÿข That and tinkering with the gears โš™ on my bike has been so much aggravation over the past two weeks. At least lately I’ve not been having problems with the smoke alarm ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿš’ repeatably going off. The warm weather over the weekend has allowed me to have the windows open and clear out some of the cooking smoke and moisture from my dumpy apartment.

Cool with times of sun for President’s Day. โ›… Saturday, a chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 32. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 34. President’s Day, partly cloudy, with a high near 42. Typical average high for the weekend is 36 degrees.

As previously noted, next Monday is Presidents Day ๐Ÿ‘ด when the sun will be setting at 5:33 pm with dusk at 6:00 pm. On that day in 2023, we had mostly cloudy and temperatures between 47 and 23 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 37 degrees. We hit a record high of 66 back in 1981.

I’d like to get out of town for President’s Day ๐Ÿ• but the weather doesn’t look great. I was thinking about taking a half day off on Friday to head out to Brookfield and Charles Baker Horse Camp ๐Ÿด for the long weekend, but now it’s looking like lake effect snow on Friday, and there is now way in hell I’m going to do the hills around Brookfield in the snow. I’ve dealt with those roads in the past, and they’re not well plowed, as Madison County primarily uses just sand and not salt, and some of those hills can be quite icy. That said, things could change before the weekend, so I’ll keep it in mind.

Happy Snowman Day โ˜ƒ

At least that’s what the internet tells me to be the case. And unlike me, the internet doesn’t just make up shit.

Good morning! Happy Snowman โ˜ƒ Day. 15 degrees and partly cloudy this morning as I await the dawn 6:50 ๐ŸŒ… and head out for a morning bike ride. Roughly three inches of snow on the ground โ˜ƒ, which could probably be turned into a snowman that will last until Monday at 2 pm, the next time it’s likely to be above freezing again.

Last night I was bed ๐Ÿ› by 7 pm and asleep shortly thereafter as with the nights so cold and dark I can’t imagine staying up much later. I mean I probably should have gone for an evening walk ๐Ÿšถ but I was tired. Cooked up some of mom’s lasagna with Butternut squash and the last of the frozen peas and corn I had. Salmon and broccoli ๐Ÿฅฆ ๐ŸŸ for dinner tonight.

Pancakes ๐Ÿฅž this morning with the remaining fresh blueberries ๐Ÿซ and mango that I had. Getting low on fresh fruit but with the snow coming tomorrow I’ll probably wait until Saturday morning to shop. ๐Ÿ›’ Even the veggies are almost out but I have several cans ๐Ÿฅซ of low sodium vegetables I got for camping that I can crack open. I’ll stock up on several large bags when I go Wally World. Bulk frozen vegetables is something I really like. Plus no cans to wash and recycle โ™ป. The plastic makes a good fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ starter, lol. ๐Ÿ˜‚

For our snowman โ˜ƒ day, slight chance of snow showers after 3pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 29. ๐ŸŒฅ South wind 7 to 10 mph. 3 degrees below the normal high of 33, closer to the typical normal before the climate warmed in Albany. Chance of precipitation is 20%. Kind of a cool day ahead but it is mid January.

I started my morning bike ride ๐Ÿšฒ out to Meads Lane but my face ๐Ÿ˜” and hands ๐Ÿ‘ were really cold, โ„ so I decided after about 4 miles of riding to head back home, have a warm shower ๐Ÿšฟ and then take the earlier express bus ๐Ÿš in an walk in the Concourse where it will be warm. I prefer the calorie burn of riding but lately I’ve been riding back along Cherry Avenue at 7:30 am and it’s really congested. ๐Ÿšถ I guess I could have done a walk in Delmar instead this morning but the Concourse will be warm.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:06 pm with sun having an altitude of 26.8° from the due south horizon (-44.1° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 11.9 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:07 pm with the sun in the southwest (235°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (242°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:50 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 17 seconds with dusk around 5:21 pm, which is one minute and 12 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous ๐ŸŒ” Moon in the south-southeast (150°) at an altitude of 59° from the horizon, 231,005 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:56 pm. At sunset, look for skies and temperatures around degrees. There will be a calm wind. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 34 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 49 seconds over today.

The shuttle bus to the suburban office ๐Ÿข works well with the 519 schedule though I admit the evening transfer is very tight and there will be times I inevitably will miss the express at the bus turn around but if I hurry to the Capitol I can likely catch it there or the 18 home. Worse comes to worse, I catch the later 18 home and just walk laps in the Plaza. ๐Ÿ‘ฃ I’m getting used to the change, though I miss the heart pumping ๐Ÿ’“ of climbing all those stairs. When the weather gets nicer out, I’ll be riding to work, that is once the bike path is free of snow ๐Ÿšฒ and can visit the Corning Preserve at lunch time or explore the bike trail, especially the nicer section near Menands. ๐Ÿž Might be nice to sit down by the river and eat lunch and ride. It’s a big change to working out in the suburbs, but it really isn’t that bad but I do miss the sweeping views from the old downtown office, and just the experience, but I’m young and can adapt.

This evening will have a slight chance of snow showers before 8pm. ๐ŸŒจ Mostly cloudy, with a low around 18. Two degrees above normal. South wind around 6 mph becoming light and variable after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

I have been trying to dial back the calories and big meals this week, ๐Ÿคฐ as I haven’t been riding into work with the weather, and don’t have the stairs to climb in the suburban office building. There are some halls to make laps, but nothing like being connected with Capitol Complex and Concourse. It’s just been cold and icy, and it’s hard to get in as many steps as I would like to do each day. ๐Ÿ‘ฃ Plus I’ve been having a lot of carbs lately with all the bread I’ve been baking ๐Ÿž. Of course now the challenge is with the pantry getting low, but as noting before, if I dip into the canned vegetable reserve I have I should be able to make it to Saturday.

Then when we finally reach Friday, โ˜บ we will have snow ๐ŸŒจ๏ธ mainly between 8am and 5pm. Cloudy and cool, with a high near 26, which is six degrees below normal. North wind 6 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible. Then really cold for the weekend. Saturday will be cloudy, with a high near 18. Northwest wind 14 to 18 mph. That just sounds cold, even without considering the windchill. Then Sunday it will be sunny, with a high near 23. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Still cold. But then again, the high temperature for this week of the year is typically around 32 degrees, which used to be only 30 before the planet warmed. Probably staying home, except for maybe going out to shop and if we do the filming of the Rezin documentary, I’ll probably head out.

Looking ahead, next Thursday is 5 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ with dusk at 5:29 pm. On that day in 2023, we had snow, mostly cloudy and temperatures between 36 and 28 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 32 degrees. We hit a record high of 61 back in 1938.

Mountain and a Farm

Maybe not the coldest Martin Luther King Day ever … โ›„

I could of and probably should have spent another night in the woods last night, but I didn’t. I was put off by the promise of high-winds, heavy snow squalls and my still fairly new camp stove that wasn’t working really well. Going to order a backup regulator and filter so going forward to avoid future problems. I might go back out camping in two weeks, if it warms up for my 41st birthday or maybe I’ll wait until Presidents Day Weekend.

Good morning! Mostly sunny and 18 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a southwest breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ.

Up at 5 AM ๐Ÿ˜€ making some pancakes with oatmeal, wheat flour and shredded carrots ๐Ÿฅ• to get that fiber-rich boost to my morning. Feeling good this morning, I thought I was starting to develop a cough yesterday, but I think I might have breathed into too much campfire smoke ๐Ÿ”ฅ in the cold on Saturday night. Blueberries, mango, honey and pure maple syrup to top the pancakes. ๐Ÿฅž Probably have a bit of a sugar high today, and if not that, I definately did do that second pot of coffee. โ˜• I’m up and going. Clear but cold this morning.

I do think it wouldn’t have been a bad day in woods, ๐Ÿ• but the forecast seemed so bad yesterday, plus I didn’t really pack enough food and I forgot to bring road salt to control the ice at camp. There will be future weekends, or so I tell myself. I do want to make sure I have that stove working well, at full output as I like my pipping hot coffee and eggs cooked quickly ๐Ÿฃ especially on a cold day today. But it’s easier to get up at 5 AM with a heated apartment and electric stove to quickly heat up coffee on such a winter’s morning. I do wish I could be watching the sun rise at camp again.

M. L. King Day will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 28 degrees at 2pm. Four degrees below normal. Southwest wind 5 to 7 mph. Not terrible for mid-January. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 33 degrees. The record high of 65 was set in 1995. Seems like a good day to be listening to Dion’s Abraham, Martin and John on this cold winter day, though it’s expected to warm up as the day progresses. 13.4 inches of snow fell back in 1983.โ„ Maybe an inch or two of snow tomorrow. I could drive into my new office, but I think I’ll figure out a way to bus it was the transfers and or the shuttle as I don’t want to deal with snow or for that matter traffic.

Thinking about going for a bike ride this morning ๐Ÿšด‍โ™€๏ธ though the rail trail might be covered with snow. I could just ride the roads, maybe go out to Five Rivers or something. I also want to go to the library for a while, I’ve thought about making some Iowa caucus data from 2016 maps up to share on the blog. ๐Ÿ—บ Then later on this morning, going to head out to the folks house for a visit. ๐Ÿ‘ช Pork roast for dinner, should be yummy. ๐Ÿ˜‹ Last night, I made some chicken soup up, ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿณ I was pretty good. I am guessing will be for lunch again too. Then I also want to make some bread up tonight, so I can put that in the oven for the morning. As I want to get in early tomorrow, as it’s the first day with the new position, I do need to be careful about cooking up soup or anything that takes too much time in the morning. Cold enough this morning I heard the heat kick on a few times, especially early on around 5 AM when I first got up to cook breakfast.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:05 pm with sun having an altitude of 26.2° from the due south horizon (-44.6° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:03 pm with the sun in the southwest (234°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (242°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:47 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 19 seconds with dusk around 5:17 pm, which is one minute and 9 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the south-southwest (206°) at an altitude of 40° from the horizon, 226,535 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:53 pm. At sunset, look for partly sunny skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 28 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 6 mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 28 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 40 seconds over today.

At some point I got to wash my truck and mountain bike, ๐Ÿšฟ both which have a lot of salt and mud on them. But right now with the cold that’s probably pointless as the roads are likely completely encrusted with road salt. There were a handful of things I didn’t get at Hannaford like peppers and more sweet potatoes I’ll probably want to get to get when I run out to Glenmont next time. I could drive in mid-week, and do all of those things on my way home after work. It really depends on how cold it is.

Tonight will have a slight chance of snow showers between 2am and 3am, then a chance of snow after 3am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒจ, with a low of 20 degrees at 3am. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around February 23rd. Maximum wind chill around 18 at 7pm; Northeast wind around 5 mph becoming light and variable. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. In 2023, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 19 degrees. The record low of -16 occurred back in 1971.

I am excited about tomorrow with the new position. ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐Ÿซ I have so much to learn in my coming months, though everybody seems to think I will be a good fit for the position, with my knowledge of data science and public datasets. In other words, I am good at typing a lot of %>%, though I probably should brush up on Python and certainly COBOL in the coming months. But a lot of things it’s best to leave up to the actual programmers. It’s a big change, but it’s good to embrace change, and I look forward to doing good work and improving my own life. I’ll need to update my investments and tax deductions, but I first want to to slowly bring up the level in my checking account ๐Ÿ’ธ which has been so depleted in recent months, mostly due to inflation eating away at everything. I worry a lot, probably way too much, though I’ve had fewer and fewer problems with actual anxiety attacks since I’ve been eating healthier. ๐Ÿฅฆ But as I note in one of today’s blog post, there are so many problems and risks in the world, ๐Ÿ“‰ that most important thing to do is to protect yourself against all the evils of the world today. They really are out to get you.

Cold and blustery weekend on tap. ๐Ÿงค๐Ÿงฃ โ›„ It’s winter, what I can say. But it’s not expected to last with a warm up expected the following week. Saturday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 17. Blustery. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 23. Probably filming my little part of Reszin documentary that week. Oh, really, as Reszin once said about my bullshitting. Probably too cold to ride over to the filming location, ๐ŸŽฌ which I am not actually sure where it is but it can be combined with a run to the store or Walmart. Always seem to need more food. ๐Ÿ Typical average high for the weekend is 32 degrees.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until my 41st Birthday ๐ŸŽ‰ when the sun will be setting at 5:05 pm with dusk at 5:34 pm. That year of being forty went by like a flash. But it was good day, I mean year especially in the markets. How fast the days come and gone. On that day in 2023, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 44 and 22 degrees. I had a lot of fun camping that weekend, doing a bunch of cross country skiing. Maybe I should do again. Typically, the high temperature is 33 degrees. We hit a record high of 54 back in 2002.

Six Weeks Until New Years Eve ๐ŸŽ‡

Those extra cups of coffee did me no good yesterday. Not only did it make it impossible to get to sleep, it contributed to my extreme anxiety I had most of the afternoon. I just kind of wanted to relax to some extra coffee yesterday but I guess I really overdone it. I swear I used to drink a lot more coffee when I was younger, and coffee ain’t as strong as it once was when sipping it, but the after effects are much worse. Between the garlic powder gas and shits, the anxiety and staying up too late, I didn’t get much sleep and sleeping past 6 o’clock is unimaginable in my mind at this point.

Good morning! Happy Sunday. Partly clear and 34 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a south breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 10 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Not a super cool morning. ๐Ÿ˜€ I could go for a walk but I want to get to the store pretty earlier and my guts are mess after last night I don’t want to risk an accident out walking. ๐Ÿ’ฉ Could be excess coffee of yesterday โ˜• but I think it’s the garlic powder I added to the tomato sauce I had last night, as that previously gave me trouble in West Virginia plus one other time at home. Big bulk container I got from Hannaford, even in moderation it keeps me running to the toilet ๐Ÿšฝ . Could be salmonella or mold growing in the container. I probably should empty it and toss in the recycle bin โ™ป๏ธ before it gets me sick again. ๐Ÿคข

Decided on pancakes this morning ๐Ÿฅž as that’s all I really had left. I was playing with recipes, decided to do ground oatmeal, with one egg, apple cider vinegar and baking soda for levity, and Splenda rather then bananna for sugar. Came out fairly good, little more filling then just ordinary oatmeal-banana pancakes. Topped with shredded apples from the food processor ๐Ÿ heated and cooked down in the microwave, along with chopped bananas. ๐ŸŒ Pretty good.

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 46 degrees at 12pm. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 23rd. South wind 6 to 11 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 39 degrees. The record high of 71 was set in 1921. 4.2 inches of snow fell back in 1914.โ„

First thing this morning is to shower ๐Ÿ›€ and then head over to Price Chopper in Slingerlands for grocery shopping, ๐Ÿ›’ that is once I get my list together. ๐Ÿ“œ I need to get $50 in groceries to use my $5 coupon, though that shouldn’t be hard as groceries are so expensive these days. Only shopping through Friday morning, as I plan to get what I need when heading up to the Adirondacks. Not Walmart on Black Friday, but I don’t think Hannaford will be particularly crowded the day after Thanksgiving. Mostly just restocking the pantry full of fruits and veggies, though I’m also going to get a big bag of frozen salmon fillets as I have that other coupon too. ๐ŸŽซ Eating lots of omega-3 is good.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:42 am with sun having an altitude of 28° from the due south horizon (-42.9° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 11.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:48 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (237°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (244°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:31 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 14 seconds with dusk around 5:00 pm, which is 47 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the south (170°) at an altitude of 28° from the horizon, 226,654 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:36 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 42 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 41 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and one second over yesterday.

Been continuing on the Udemy Courses. ๐ŸŽ“ I am on my third course after two courses on remote sensing. ๐Ÿ›ฐ So far done is Remote Sensing with QGIS: Basics of Satellite Imagery Classification and Fundamentals of Remote Sensing and Geospatial Analysis. Been learning a lot. It’s wonderful that my public library ๐Ÿ“š offers these classes for free and you get free certifications ๐Ÿ“„ after you get done watching the classes and doing the quizzes. The most recent one is Spatial Data Analysis with R, QGIS & More which is good but it’s about 7 or 8 years out of date, and doesn’t show a recent version of QGIS and uses the obsolete R library of rgeos rather then sf and terra which is used today. But still it’s interesting and good to learn as a big part of the class is about kriging, which is something I am still struggling to fully understand. ๐Ÿ—บ ๐Ÿ“

Yesterday I checked out the Bethlehem Sportsmart โ›ท and was shocked at the prices of skis, especially ones in good quality. At over $100 for a pair of cross-country skis, I think I’d be best off to get a pair at a retailer, maybe after the holidays, one that fits and works properly for my needs. It was mobbed at the sportsmart, with screaming babies ๐Ÿ‘ถ and children running around. ๐Ÿง’ The skis I have currently are groomed-track skis, which besides being broken, really aren’t good for the kind of cross-country skiing I do that rarely involves following groomed tracks. ๐Ÿค‘ The problem with those skis is they are too fast and sink too deep in unpacked snow, the prior is a particular concern when descending mountains, especially now that I’m close to 41 years old, and crashing with skis may very well mean broken bones. ๐Ÿค• Plus I wasn’t in the mood to spend any money right now, to say nothing about that I’m not sure if it will be a particularly snowy winter. I might just stay closer to home this winter, do more bike riding ๐Ÿšด‍โ™€๏ธ on the roads. Winter ski season is so short around here, and it’s often quite cold int he winter.

Didn’t end up being able to fix the vacuum cleaner yesterday, ๐Ÿงน turns out that after I got it all apart, then put it back to work, I found out the source of the rattle — bad ball bearing. After fiddling for it for a few more hours, I ended up pulling the motor and any part I could reuse or scrap. โš™ Heck of it is I had it back to together and it was working until it’s started sparking and not working again. โšก Disappointing crap, I bought it only 7 years ago but ever since I got it constantly plugged, burned up belts and malfunctioned. If I get another vacuum, I am going to get a small rechargeable hand held ๐Ÿคฒ one as I don’t really have that much carpet in my apartment and then I can do the stairs and vacuum out the mud and dust from my truck better. I’m just annoyed by all that plastic trash, even I will be able to reuse the switch and cord from the vacuum for camp lighting, ๐Ÿ”Œ and may be able to part out parts of the motor for electronics projects or add to the stack of scrap metal for eventual recycling at the scrap yard. โ™ป๏ธ It wasn’t a real cheap vacuum — it was like $70 or $80 bucks, a Dirt Devil Pet Hair Vacuum but it constantly plugged on wads of hair and dust. I bought it because the reviews were good originally, and I figured a pet hair vacuum wouldn’t clog as much as a standard vacuum. ๐Ÿถ I guess don’t believe the review. I just hate carpet, when I have my own land, I don’t ever want that indoors. Especially not the gross, nasty worn out shag carpet like in my apartment.

The broken vacuum cleaner, the debate in my mind to renew or not renew my certificate of deposit,  the signing of Clean Slate last week, getting my ego knocked down a peg for that messed up background at work, and cold weather ๐Ÿคช plus all that coffee just really got me into a bad place by last night. ๐Ÿคฏ My mind was racing, I just kind of felt sick. The whole thing was stupid, it wasn’t entirely my fault I messed up the background, the researcher and big boss didn’t catch it either. ๐Ÿ’ฃ The vacuum cleaner was cheap shit it never worked right. The truck is going to be fine for another year. Then I got the shits from that garlic powder. ๐Ÿ’ฉ Yuck, I was so sick for a while. Did I mention I burnt my finger ๐Ÿ‘† on the soldering iron when I was working last night. ๐Ÿ˜  I was just so bitter, angry and frustrated all evening. I mean it’s stupid, what happened at work isn’t the end of world, moving to a new department soon, the seven-year old vacuum cleaner was less then a tank of gas these days, my truck will likely make it another year, it’s winter it’s cold but I am still planning adventures, I can get better skis somewhere else, and the coffee and shits will wear themselves off.

But regardless, I had a nice bicycle ride out to Voorheesville. ๐Ÿšฒ The bridge is fully re-opened, they did a nice job, it’s a very smooth ride up and over the bridge. On the west side of the bridge it’s a slight upgrade, but the expansion gaps are remarkably smooth and it’s blacktop, all the more surprising for a “temporary bridge”. Truth is they did such a nice job on the “temporary” bridge that they really don’t have a good reason to necessarily replace it anytime soon. Sat and watched the 4 PM freight train roll through Voorheesville ๐Ÿš‚ then watched the sunset ๐ŸŒ† from Bender Mellon Farms and rode home quickly, thinking it would get dark but it didn’t so I rode down to Adams Street then back along the designated bike route through the back roads of Delmar. Great evening even if it was shitty day in so many ways. That part of the day was pretty nice, even if I got sick in evening ๐Ÿ˜ซ and my mind was racing the rest of day. ๐Ÿคช

Tonight will have a slight chance of showers before 8pm. Partly cloudy ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 26 degrees at 6am. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 3rd. Northwest wind 8 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2022, we had clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 24 degrees. The record low of 6 occurred back in 1986.

Last night made homemade tomato sauce with canned tomatoes, Italian spices, spinach, peas, chopped garlic, crushed red pepper, smoked paprika and kidney beans. Added a little bit of lentil pasta towards the end. Tasted good, very filling and kept me full. ๐Ÿฅ˜ It as all good until I added some garlic powder (really not much), which totally blew up my stomach starting around midnight, with frequent visits the bathroom and everything stinking of garlic. I don’t know why I have such problems with this garlic powder I got the other day — crushed garlic is good. I thought the problem was the whole wheat flour I got from Price Chopper but I’m pretty sure it’s the garlic powder. Been having a lot of stomach issues lately, I thought I would adjust to the high-fiber diet but it’s proven difficult. ๐Ÿคฐ

Got reading about the latest generation of single board computers ๐Ÿ–ฅ which keep getting more and more powerful and cheaper. Technology on this front is advancing so quickly, it’s a golden age to be a hobbyist with things like the original Arduino from years ago seeming so out of date. ๐Ÿค– Then I got reading about stomach issues as my stomach grumbled, and this really weird thread on the internet where people fight about whether or not sugars in excessive fruit consumption ๐ŸŒ ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ’ lead to fatty liver disease and diabetes. Most of the experts think the benefit of the extra fiber far outweigh any downsides to a diet rich in fruits, though I do eat a lot of fruit (and vegetables too). Probably too much fruit but I like sweet. But I also don’t eat any food with added sugars if I can all avoid it, which is what most doctors ๐Ÿ‘จ‍โš•๏ธ think really are a big threat to health. I am a bit obsessed with fatty liver disease after people warned me about the risk of loosing so much weight so quickly. Hell of it is I don’t have much control over my weight, it really is a just a side effect of diet. Hard to gain too much when your stuffing your face with fruits, vegetables and beans all of the time, and riding to work and walking everywhere.

Next Friday through the following Monday is looking good for the Adirondacks ๐Ÿ• though only time will determine for sure. โ„๏ธ It looks like the snow event in Wednesday isn’t going to leave feet of snow up north, so I should be able to get back to camp without doing a lot of shoveling or hauling gear back, though worse come to worse, I’ll bring the sled and drag gear back. ๐Ÿ›ท The weekend looks to be cool but not as cold as they first predicted โ˜• and warm coffee and meals along with the heater should be good. And I can get away from it all.

Looking ahead, there are 3 weeks until 7:15 AM Sunrise โŒ›๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 4:23 pm with dusk at 4:53 pm. On that day in 2022, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 31 and 20 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 40 degrees. We hit a record high of 64 back in 1966.

Driving the Elk Highway
