July 23, 2019 Night

Good evening! Partly clear and 62 degrees at the Finger Lakes National Forest. 🌃 Calm wind. The dew point is 56 degrees. Cool and clear for a change.

It was a decent day but cloudier and grayer then I would have hoped for part of the day. ☁ Did get a nice hike along the Burnt Hill, Gorge and Interlaken Trails although parts were muddy. Swimming wasn’t that great with the cloudy skies but so be it. 🏊 I spent about two hours at the Watkins Glen library working on the blog and Save the Pine Bush stuff.

I’m thinking about tomorrow staying on more night in the Finger Lakes but not at this campsite as you can see from the pictures, the driveway is a muddy mess. 🐽I figure I should let the land recover and if I do stay in the Finger Lakes another night, it will be at a different site. I’m not worried about getting my big jacked up truck stuck but I don’t want to tear it up anymore.

Tonight will be mostly clear 🌃, with a low of 56 degrees at 5am. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 3rd. Yeap, Labor Day Weekend will come and go before you know it. Maximum dew point of 56 at 10pm. Light northwest wind. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies. It was sticky. It got down to 75 degrees. The record low of 45 occurred back in 1985.

Tonight will have a Last Quarter Moon with 49% illuminated with the moon rising at 12:03 am. 🌗The moon will set at 12:57 am. The Last Quarter Moon will be tonight with mostly clear skies. The Strugeon Moon 🌝 is on Wednesday, August 14th. The sun will rise at 5:51 am with the first light at 5:18 am, which is 57 seconds later than yesterday. 🌄 Tonight will have 9 hours and 15 minutes of darkness, an increase of one minute and 52 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly between 3pm and 5pm. Mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 72 degrees at 2pm. 11 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 16th. Maximum dew point of 55 at 11am. Light northwest wind becoming north 6 to 11 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had rain in the morning, which became partly cloudy by afternoon. It was very sticky. The high last year was 89 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1941.

I’m really not sure about tomorrow. If it’s beautiful I’m all about staying another day in the Finger Lakes.💭 But if I wake up tomorrow and it doesn’t look good for swimming then I’ll head west. 72 degrees is pretty cold in my book for swimming especially if it’s cloudy and stormy like today. Often it seems like the wonderful forecasts are over predictions. 😐Although I wouldn’t mind seeing a good sunset tomorrow in the Finger Lakes like I could see if I camped on Matthew’s Hill. Beautiful sunsets up there, especially in the pasture to say nothing of the views of the stars ✨ and the wineries amd farms across Seneca Lake. That campsite didn’t look to muddy when I was up there yesterday, it’s not flooded like two years ago. Otherwise I could go out to one of the state forests in Allegany County tomorrow like I had planned and then Thursday drive up to Letchworth State Park and then maybe camp Thursday night at McCarthy Hill / Rock City in Salamanca and do the Allegany State Park Friday and Pine Creek Gorge on Saturday. On my way out, I’ll probably also hit up the Sugar Hill Firetower not because the views are that great but it’s pretty much on the way out to Hammondsport and all points west. 👓

In four weeks on August 20 the sun will be setting at 8:00 pm,🌄 which is 35 minutes and 36 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 80 and 60 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 80 and 60 degrees. The record high of 97 degrees was set back in 1937.

I lost my deodorant that I just replaced on Saturday so I bought more at Walmart today when I returned cans and bought groceries. I felt so stinky hiking without deodorant. I also bought milk 🐮 and ice and a summer sausage that appealed to me. No ice cream today as I was thinking I could get ice cream tomorrow 🍦if I stayed anl extra day in the Finger Lakes.

Looking ahead, World Mosquito Day 🐞 is in 4 weeks, Constitution Day 📜 is in 8 weeks, October 🛥 is in 10 weeks and Election Day 2020 🗳️ is in 67 weeks.

I’m feeling remarkably tired so I don’t know how much longer I’ll stay up.

July 3, 2019 Morning

Good morning! What day is it? Get Away Day before Independence Day, of course. Four weeks to Teeth Cleaning Day 😃. I figure that way I’ll remember the appointment. Partly sunny and 68 degrees at the Elm Ave Park & Ride – CDTA. That said, the driver ain’t waiting, she left the station 🚉 a minute early, dropped the hammer 🔨 at the green light 🚦 and has powered through at least one red light. Must be her last trip of the day. Calm wind. The dew point is 64 degrees. Hot and humid.

That said maybe she was flying ✈ because she knew how bad the traffic would be in the Empire State Plaza. 🚕🚓🚗🚐🚌 Things are so pokey this morning. With the traffic delays going through I’m kind of glad I didn’t drive in, as it’s a lot more fun to be blogging on my phone, sitting on the air conditioned bus then wrangling my way through bumper to bumper traffic. I’m sure I’ll have my share to deal with this afternoon.

Things are packed except for the cooler and the propane but I’ll get those things after work and be off by six or maybe earlier if they close the office down early. 🏢 I expect a slow commute for the first half hour but the air conditioning works well in the truck and it’s not like it gets real dark until like 9:15 pm or later in the Adirondacks this time of year. Google Maps estimates with traffic, I’ll be to Wakely Dam by 8:40. 🌄

I expect it will be a nice weekend at Moose River Plains, but certainly a hot one too. I heard it was going to be buggy, 🐜so I bought a container of DEET, Picardin and Oil of Eucalyptus insect repellents. All but the Picardin came in plastic spray bottles, which is handy for when they run out — don’t have to save and bring to transfer station. Hopefully that will control the bugs well.

I am bringing the kayak, as one night I’ll probably take it out on Helldiver Pond for some evening fishing and enjoying the sunset. 🎣 I doubt I’ll go out on Cedar River Flow this year, but my mind could change. Or maybe I’ll take it out on one of Chain Lakes or even Moss Lake. I’m thinking of on Saturday doing the Stillwater Firetower — or maybe Sunday, it depends on what the weather looks like come Saturday and how soon the front come through.🚶

Today will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 89 degrees at 4pm. Seven degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 64 at 8am. Light north wind. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was humid. The high last year was 94 degrees. The record high of 102 was set in 1911. The real humidity builds on after I’m up in the Adirondacks.

The sun will set at 8:36 pm with dusk around 9:11 pm, which is 13 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for mostly clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 81 degrees. The dew point will be 62 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 15 hours and 13 minutes of daytime, an increase of 48 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear 🌃, with a low of 63 degrees at 5am. Two degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 62 at 8pm. Calm wind. In 2018, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It became very sticky as the night progressed. It got down to 71 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1971.

On this day in 1886, the New-York Tribune becomes the first newspaper to use a linotype machine, 💻 eliminating typesetting by hand ✋. I am pretty sure that like a computer only a little bit more primative. Now they probably use computers but not at Tribune because they don’t exist any more.

Independence Day will be sunny and hot, with a high near 91. ☀ Calm wind becoming southeast around 6 mph in the afternoon. Muggy as duck with dew points approaching or exceeding seventy. Even in Pennsylvania you can get a ticket for going that fast. I’m glad I’ll be up in the Adirondacks sipping and ice cold beer. 🍻 I just hope that I won’t run out beer but they probably sell that in Inlet.

Friday starts the dog days of summer. 🐶 Hot and muggy. Scattered showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. ☀ Partly sunny, with a high near 89. South wind 7 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Summer weather, with the muggers in full force.

Saturday looks pretty unstable but Sunday will be absolutely beautiful. 😕 Saturday, showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 8am, then showers likely between 8am and noon, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after noon. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 85. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Maximum dew point of 72 at 10am.

Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 82. Maximum dew point of 60 at 6am. Typical average high for the weekend is 82 degrees. Sunday will be really nice, I should try to maximize the most of the day. I might do some hiking on one of the shorter trails along NY 28 south of Old Forge, as that’s the way I plan to come home.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until *MY* Teeth Cleaning Day 😃 when the sun will be setting at 8:16 pm with dusk at 8:48 pm. On that day in 2018, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 86 and 67 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 82 degrees. We hit a record high of 98 back in 1917.

Saturday night

July 1, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy July 🏊🏿! Back to work on this three day work week as I have Friday off. Going to be a beautiful day. Too bad I have to work. Two weeks to Cow Appreciation Day 🐂. Sunny and 64 degrees in Delmar, NY. 🌞 There is a northwest breeze at 6 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 56 degrees.

Today will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 80 degrees at 3pm. One degree below normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 25th. Maximum dew point of 58 at 11am. Northwest wind 6 to 9 mph. Don’t get weather much better than this. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was very sticky. The high last year was 97 degrees. The record high of 99 was set in 1913.

The sun will set at 8:37 pm with dusk around 9:11 pm, which is 9 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for mostly clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 74 degrees. The dew point will be 59 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 15 minutes of daytime, an increase of 41 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌤, with a low of 60 degrees at 5am. Typical for tonight. Maximum dew point of 59 at 7pm. West wind 5 to 7 mph. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies. It was very sticky. It got down to 77 degrees. The record low of 40 occurred back in 1978.

Tomorrow I got to pick up my dry cleaning, which means I’ll either have to get cash or use my card. 💳 I usually use cash but I have like $37 worth of dry cleaning to pick up but I should be good for a while as I don’t wear my suit much off session. 👔

On this day in 1963, ZIP codes are introduced for United States mail. If you get a zip code wrong, the best thing that can happen is you have a very scornful postal clerk, and the worst thing that can happen is your mail isn’t delivered. ✉ Always double check zip codes. Shit happens, it’s all about manure management. 💩 Also in 1968, the UAW becomes a seperate entity from AFL-CIO over policy disputes. The UAW would rejoin the AFL-CIO 13 years later in 1981. 👷

Looks like a nice weekend but watch for thunderstorms. ⚡Saturday, scattered showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 84. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Maximum dew point of 68 at 6am. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 79. Maximum dew point of 61 at 6pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 82 degrees.

I’m continuing to think about heading up to Moose River Plains after work on Wednesday, ⛺ for the long weekend. I’m a bit hesitant to go up there as I don’t want to break anything on my truck (again) on those rough roads but I’ll drive carefully. I also get tired of spending so much time in my truck running place to place but if I plan appropriately I can do things near camp and with the solar once I’m set up and there is a reasonable amount of sun I should be good for the weekend. But I could do something else too. 💭 I’ll probably bring the kayak for going out on Helldiver Pond one night but I’m not set on that yet.

One possibility is driving over to Stillwater Reservoir during the weekend and hiking the Fire Tower 🗼. I’ve never been to that tower and I think I’ll need to visit Inlet during the weekend to buy ice and maybe ice cream but not at Northern Lights 🍦as that place did nothing for me but I want to try the place in Eagle Bay.

I still have future weekends to get up to the Potholers. There is one weekend between summer vacation and Independence Weekend so if nice I could always do that. 🏊 Plus there is the months of August and possibly September for getting up there.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Cow Appreciation Day 🐂 when the sun will be setting at 8:31 pm with dusk at 9:04 pm. On that day in 2018, we had hot, humid, partly sunny, rain showers and temperatures between 93 and 72 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 83 degrees. We hit a record high of 96 back in 1997.

May 26, 2019 1 PM Update

Good afternoon! Partly cloudy and 70 degrees at the Stratton Mountain. ⛅ There is a west breeze at 14 mph with some good gusts but the tower is very solid. 🍃. The dew point is 59 degrees.

Nice afternoon. I wasn’t sure where I would hike today but I decided to hike Stratton Mountain. 🗻 Camping has been fun although late last afternoon we had some showers but generally been decent weather. I took the tarp down. Unfortunately last night my hammock ripped so I’ll have to decide what’s next for that as I kind of like using the hammock.

August 3, 2018 Morning

Good morning! Already it’s Friday! Two more days before I take down camp and head back to Albany. It’s been a very cloudy week but relatively rain free, at least compared to the previous week or even last year. With the end of vacation coming up on Sunday, we will already be in August, today marks three weeks to Average High Falls To 79 ️Degrees ⛱️️️.

The rain had stopped, but now it’s restarted and around 69 degrees at the Finger Lakes National Forest in Hector. ☁ There is a south breeze at 6 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 66 degrees. The second half of this week has been quite muggy and cloudy although each day we’ve had a bit of clearing skies. The cowboys, or a guess graizers or farmers are out on the pasture across the street rounding up cows using four wheelers on this somewhat wet morning. 🐂🐃🐄

Today will have showers likely, with thunderstorms also possible after noon. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Cloudy ☔ , with a high of 74 degrees at 2pm. Seven degrees below normal. Maximum dew point of 67 at 6pm. South wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies. It was humid. The high last year was 86 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1975.

Today’s plans will be similar to Wednesday, probably head into Watkins Glen later to get on the internet and then for a hike in the gorge and a swim in the pool. 🏊 I’m hoping for more sun later, but I’ll take it hour by hour. I need paper towels, matches and gasoline too. ⛽This morning, I’ll probably hang out at camp for a while, laying in the hammock listening to the radio, maybe going for a short walk later on.

Tonight in the Finger Lakes, the sun will set at 8:24 pm with dusk around 8:55 pm, which is one minute and 13 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for clouds ☁with a chance of thunderstorms ⚡ and 70 degrees. The dew point will be 67 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 21 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 15 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Mostly cloudy ☔ , with a low of 66 degrees at 6am. Four degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 67 at 6pm. South wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2017, we had mostly cloudy skies. It was sticky. It got down to 70 degrees. The record low of 46 occurred back in 1966.

As I brought my kayak all the way out to Watkins Glen, I really should put it to use at least once. 🚣 Especially as Saturday will be one of the most beautiful days of vacation. One option I’ve been thinking about is backtracking to Montezuma for a day and paddling along the Seneca Canal. That’s about an hour each way. Another option, is to put in on Seneca Lake in Watkins Glen and paddle the Montour Falls Canal, assuming that the lake isn’t too choppy and the canal isn’t flooding and mucky from today’s rain. After I did that I could hit up the Watkins Glen pool and deck one last time to soak up the rays before its done as far as I’m concerned for the year. Then obviously, one last hit of the Glen Dairy Bar.🍦🍧🍨 Another fall back is paddle and fish Lamoka Lake after visiting the Sugar Hill Firetower. Going to be such a beautiful and hot day on Saturday.

Come Sunday it’s the tear down that campsite day. ⛺ Yeap, vacation is coming to an end and I’ll have to head back to the old Albany to make more money, 🏢 so I can continue to invest in my future. 💰Going to be such a nice day, I’m thinking maybe I should get an early start taking down camp on Sunday, maybe hike Enfield Glen before eleven,🏊 then go swimming in the Gorge pool until 12:30 or one, then be back to Albany NY by four. 🕔

Despite the lack of sun, it’s been a good vacation. 😥I’m sure I will probably have a few more opportunities for weekend trips this summer, and I look forward to hunting season and my November road trip, which I’m thinking will have a day or two in the Finger Lakes, although the focus will be primarily more on the Western New York and probably Pennsylvania. West Virginia remains a possibility but not a certainty at this point, I’m still evaluating my options. 🗻

I love being out in the wilderness, and look forward to owning my own land and living off grid in a low tax high freedom state. 🔥🔫🐂 I wish everyday could be as much fun as my camping adventures, and not just be the daily grind in the city, with the toilet and refrigerator I’m always struggling with at home, or all the restrictions that come with living in the city. The rural landscapes and the hills and valleys really stir my soul and remind me there are things to life beyond that dirty, rundown apartment in the city that the rent keeps going up on.

When I get back home, I have to schedule an oil change for Big Red and I have an eye appointment on Thursday.👀 I have a coupon from the General for a $50 synthetic oil change and tire rotation, which is a good deal but it does mean having to bring it all the way back up to DeNoyer in Colonie.🚗 But then I shouldn’t need an oil change until late winter or early spring, and I’ll have contacts for the year.

I am going to create a new Facebook Page for my blog over the next few weeks. 📰 The new changes to Facebook API makes it impossible to automatically post from my blog to my Facebook profile, but if I have a page I can continue to easily post all my posts and photos to Facebook. I’ll probably share some of what I post on blog and Facebook Page to my personal profile but looking at the tools and options available for Facebook Pages, I think I make the switch sooner rather than later.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Average High Falls To 79 ️Degrees ⛱️️️ when the sun will be setting at 7:54 pm with dusk at 8:23 pm in the Finger Lakes. Figure about 15 minutes earlier back in Albany. On that day in 2017, we had partly cloudy skies and temperatures between 75 and 56 degrees. We hit a record high of 95 back in 1947.

Truck Camping On Leonard Hill

Up by the Leonard Hill Fire Tower, there is a clearing cut into the hillside, and an area where there is a little fire place, and some grass that never grows that tall. It’s obvious that people camp up here from time to time, to enjoy the beautiful sunset, and myself I’ve been itching to watch a sunset from here for some time.

Watching the Rain Come In

While on June 5th, the weather was somewhat cloudy, as thunderstorm after thunderstorm came rolling through the valleys and mountains alike, it actually turned out to be a remarkably beautiful evening. with a beautiful sunset into the clouds. The views from Leonard Hill where as spectacular as always.

The Truck

Looking at my camping set up.

Looking at the Campsite

The rain lead to some beautiful misty sky scapes, especially as the sun was lowering in the sky. Here is Rossman Hill, where I had camped deep in the valley the previous night.

Rossman Hills in the Fog

And here Blenheim Mountain with the Blenheim Upper Power Project Reservoir above it.

Blenhium Mountain

It was windy up there, but the little White Gas Coleman Stove did just find boiling the water for the pasta I was cooking up for dinner. I did stick it behind this little rock to provide a little more shelter from the wind, but regardless cooked it quickly.

Cooking Dinner

With the wind racing up the hill with coming front, I kept the fire very small and a lot of water nearby. It had been raining throughout the day, so things weren’t particularly flammable, but with the winds being so strong, it was a bit frightening.

Sitting at a Campfire

I watched the sunset into the valley while the very small campfire roared away with the winds whipping away. It wasn’t particularly cool, but by 8 PM, I did feel it neccessary to put on a long-sleeved shirt.

Rays of Sun Through the Trees

With the clouds starting to over take the sun.

And eventually a front comes through, making the sun set before it normally would, quite far to the north, over Rossman Hill.

The view after sunset. You can just barely make out the mountains, from Utsayathana to the left, to Blenheim and the Reservoir in the center, to Burnt-Rossman Hills on the right.

After Sunset

The truck truck and camping gear after dark.

Camping on Leonard Hill

Awaking in the morning to pounding rain, which fortunately let up into a relatively thick fog by the time I got up in the morning. Here is a view out the back window of the truck cap.

First View This Morning

My “night stand” in the truck. Books, radio, flashlight, even fan. I’m as well prepared as I would be at home for sure. That light has only a 9-watt florescent bulb in it, although if I ever needed more light, I have two other lead-lamps with 26-watt florescent in them to illuminate the night.

Under the Cap

Packing up my gear on the foggy morning.

Getting Up and Packing Up Gear

The rain and fog pretty much obstructed the view by morning.

Rain Looking Off Leonard Hill

The farther I got down the mountain, the worst the weather got on the truck trail. A little farther down the mountain, the fog was so bad, I had to drive really slow with my truck.

Driving Down Truck Trail in Heavy Fog

Here is a map of where I camped on top of Leonard Hill.

Chazy Lake Primative Campsite

On Lake Chazy, the state owns about 800 feet of lake front as State Forest. There is three campsites here, one of them on the lake, and two along a private road / driveway.

Fireplace

This parcel exists on the far end of Wilfred King Road, which runs for about 5 miles before you reach the end where the parking area and the private drive you take down to the parcel.

Trail on In

The site on the water has great views, a little fireplace, and lots of space for setting up two or three tents. It’s just as much a paradise as the photo suggests.

Gear All Packed Up

“Camp Here” marker shows that this is a designated site. When your in the Catskills or Adirondacks they tend to be fairly strict about the 150 feet rule from water and roads, unless you are a designated site.

Camp Here Marker

Down by the lake in the afternoon. Imagine a book in my hands, and you can see how relaxed I am.

Afternoon

Cookng some dinner on my camp stove. Tonight I’m having sausage in Rice-a-Roni. The image makes it look like some kind of sinster stew that I’m making up, make out of small children I boiled up and mixed with grits. It’s not that for sure, and was far more delicious.

Cooking Dinner

If you go out in the lake a little ways for a wade, you get a good view of Lyon Mountain. The water is shallow, and if it’s as hot as it was when I was there, truly delightful. While you will have to drive approximately 10 miles around the lake to get to the parking area to climb Lyon Mountain, but it’s beautiful with the fire tower up top.

Lyon Mountain

Sitting down at the lake you could hear the errie call of the loon.

Loon

The site has good south-west views over the Lyon Mountain where the sunsets in the evening. The sunsets from here are amazing, as you watch the fire burn. The wood supply is limited, so you may consider packing in your own wood supply.

Dusk

The important thing is that if you go there, make sure to drive all the way to the end of the road, past where the blacktop ends and after where the state forest starts. You will know when your there, and if you don’t see signs for the state parcel or the campsites, you haven’t driven far enough.

Also, while it’s posted against driving motor vehicles past the parking lot, as it is a private driveway, you can drive almost up to the lake front campsite if you don’t want to walk with the stuff in. That said, it’s only about a 1/4 mile hike from the parking area, so it’s fine to make multiple trips throughout the night and day like I did.

Swimming Hole

Here is the site on Google Maps. The hikers are where you park, the trail follows the driveway for a while, and then turns for about 150 feet to the campsite right on the water.
