October 10, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Vacation is going by much too quickly but I’m excited as today I’m going to West Virginia through Sunday. Three weeks to Halloween 🛥️. Sunny and 42 degrees at the Buzzard Swamp Coop Mangement Area. 🌞 Calm wind.

This morning I started out the day with walk back to Buzzard Swamp 🐦. Beautiful morning with fog 🌁 over part of the Buzzard Swamp. I really do tight invest in a good pair of binoculars. 🔭Maybe I’ll look at that for Christmas 🎄 sales time. Later it’s to Punxsutawney on PA 36 then Mount Davis Pennsylvania High Point and then Cannan Heights WV.

Today will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 66 degrees at 3pm. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 1st. East wind 3 to 5 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was humid. The high last year was 83 degrees. The record high of 89 was set in 1939. 0.8 inches of snow fell back in 1925.❄

I set my alarm for six AM ⏰ which was pitch black this morning except for the stars. 🎑 I did hit the reset a few times more then I’m proud to admit but less than yesterday. The moon had set and it was cold but unlike yesterday, I was determined to break camp by eight to drive down to West Virginia. I saw the starting battery 🔋 was at 12.50 so I started up the truck with a bit to be safe.

Not so cold this morning and I made only a small pot of coffee ☕ so hopefully I won’t have to stop a million times on the way to West Virginia. I tried to leave early the previous day but it was so dark and cold and I had to the down the tarp and tent. Today I had a lot less gear plus I camped fifty miles to the south. Saved some dash cam video 📹 on my laptop.

Yesterday I decided to go to Warren Tops to buy groceries. I really needed ice and was running low on milk and cheese. I also decided to buy beer. 🍻 It’s now sold at selected grocery stores in Pennsylvania but it’s a completely separate unit – you have to pay for it separately from the rest of the groceries and they sell non standard sizes – I bought a 15 pack of Budwiser for $12.98 no tax or deposit which is cheap compared to New York. It maybe not, I often buy 30 racks at Walmart for $19.95 plus $1.60 in sales tax and $1.60. But unfortunately without a deposit, I’ll have to crush the cans and bring them back to the transfer station for recycling ♻. Forgot how much Warren stinks like oil country – its a mix of crude oil, hydrogen sulfide with a certain amount of sweetness to the air. Actually camp smells a bit like that.

Then I headed south along US 62 stopping at the Tidoute Overlook 📷 and then going to Nebraska Submergable Bridge. 🌉 It’s kind of fun to see it again after seeing many Facebook posts of people exploring it while it’s submerged. Honestly I was surprised how much traffic goes over the bridge but it’s a pretty big shortcut to a lot of hunting camps. Hit a lot of construction 🚧 on US 62 AND on PA 36. They were paving PA 36, big delays there.

Not a lot of interesting country 🐮 – some of the sections along the Alleghany River between Tidoute and Tionesta were quite pretty. I can get why that section is popular with kayakers. 🚤Flat once you climb out of Tionesta Valley, some farmland and some businesses supporting the pop business. Rather flat until I got down to the area around Cooks Forest and then timberland as I headed to Marienville. I did see a household burning trash, which is still somewhat common in rural PA but nothing like a decade ago. Some of that plastic stuff stinks, especially if it’s smoldering. 👃

After that I visited the Cook Forest State Park ⛲ which had a fire tower and a path down to the gorge where the Clarion River runs and a nice picnic area around a historic tree planation. 🌲🌲🌲 I took River Road along Clarion River. That road is narrow but beautiful. Almost hit a doe, ran up from the river bank and into the shadow. My tires squealed but I fortunately missed it. Reviewing the dashcam it would have been hard for me to spot it. Really in the shadow.

I was hoping to camp ⛺ at Loleta Grade campsite 16 which I like because it has good cell service 📱 which makes the night by go by quickly and makes the remote country seem less remote. It also has a good view of the stars ✨ and would be good for solar. But alas somebody already grabbed it with their camper, probably a bow hunter 🙇. They appeared to have solar too and probably cell service internet in their camp. That’s a much nicer campsite. This site on the Gurgling Run smells a bit like Hydrogen Sulfide from an oil well, I assume that’s what makes the Gurgling Run Gurgle. 💩 And it not only smells, it gurgles. Plus I don’t want to spend three nights without cell service. 📱

It thought about staying here for three nights then going to see the Elk and drive the Elk Drive and do Hyer View on Sunday. 🚙But then I would miss West Virginia and I don’t really like the campsite I ended up in. It doesn’t look good for me getting down to West Virginia in 2020 as it’s a busy election year at my other job and they’re could be recounts or snow in November.

So I decided instead to drive down to Thomas, WV for the long weekend, heading back to County Bridge Campground. 🗻 Heading down now to Mount Davis, Pennsylvania High Point via Penna 36 and US 219. More of that highway is built through Somerset and some of those new expressway bridges look like they’ll have amazing views. It’s a lot of driving but less than I really had in my original plan as I’m not going down to the New River Gorge – just Dolly Sods one day and the other – the cloudy and potentially rainy Saturday I’ll do Maryland High Point and Blackwater Falls. But it’s fine. Sunday I’ll take Cooridor H, visit the Mount Storm Lake 🏭 and the massive power plant and then take to the road Keyser and then to Cumberland Maryland, then take US 220 and Interstate 99 to Mount Pisagh State Park for a drive with hopefully good colors then overnight at County Bridge outside of Troy.

I will pitch the tent down in West Virginia with the heater. No fires down there due to continuing fire ban 🔥 but I’ll save the paper plates and other burnables and have a fire the last night when overnight in Pennsylvania. I also have a little bit of kiln dried wood to burn at County Bridge. It’s fine – most nights I’ve been laying back in the hammock fairly early and letting the fire go out. It’s going to quite mild and the tent heater will be toasty. Not having to gather wood means that I’ll have more time for relaxing and reading 📖. Fires are really a lot of work and kind of a waste of fire wood.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Halloween 🛥️ when the sun will be setting at 6:13 pm with dusk at 6:41 pm. October 6, 2019 Night

Good evening! Rain and 61 degrees at the Allegheny National Forest. ☔ There is a southwest breeze at 6 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 59 degrees. Despite the rain, it’s a fairly mild evening. It looks like West Virginia is getting hit by a lot of rain tonight – even more than here and thats a good thing – they need it badly. The skies will clear Tuesday around 1 am.

Today I mostly stayed around camp ⛺, reading a book about agriculture in America. 📖 I don’t remember the name of the book and I’m not interested in going out in the rain to look at it. Read it cover to cover, it was an interesting book.

Later in the evening I went for a walk 🚶 along the Elijah Bike Trail up to Coal Knob. While the Coal Knob tower 🗼 is long gone it is pretty with the Pitch Pine on the summit. It turned out to be a five plus mile walk, through a variety of forests.

Rain held off for the most part until 8:30 💦 and I laid back in the hammock for a while before having to take it down for the rain. A mild evening, I am now sitting tarp although I let the fire go down 🔥 to save wood for tomorrow and because I don’t know how much longer I’ll stay up. I might start up the truck a bit to top off the batteries before bed. 😴

A gray morning for sure, much different than that morning some eighteen years ago. 😔 Time goes by so quickly, two decades really isn’t a long time when you think about it. I remember the ugly orange walls in the classroom during my freshman year at college, and seeing the towers fall on television.📺 Classes were canceled, I went up to Partridge Run WMA and went for a walk, as the skies were silent without planes flying above. ✈

New York was fun yesterday, but I’m glad to be back upstate today. 🏙️ New York is as gritty as ever, lots of traffic and construction. I am glad I didn’t have to drive down there. New Jersey was the usual mess of suburban strip malls and speeding traffic on NJ 17.🚗

I’ve been reading a lot about delta and wye three phase power. 🔌 It’s interesting to study power poles and see if they are carrying delta or wye or single phase power — as is common in rural areas like where my parents live. Power infrastructure is often very visible from the highway so you can study the wiring if you look at it.⚡ Electricity generation and distribution is often a story of compromise and choosing the best of option of many bad options.

August 31, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Where did Summer go? Trump must have stolen it away. 😔 Three weeks to Average High 70 🎑. Autumn is coming. Mostly sunny and 49 degrees at the Perkins Clearing. Calm wind. With the sun it doesn’t feel that cold though. ☀

I ended up deciding to go up to that campsite I like up in Perkins Clearing in the Adirondacks. ⛺ I did drive up to an swing by Fox Lair but that campsite was taken and I honestly didn’t want to listen to the road noise all weekend long. I thought I stop by at any rate. This campsite has good views of the skies so it’s nice on starry nights 🌃 although I don’t know how I’ll string up a tarp should it rain on Sunday. My guess is that I probably won’t.

Today will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 67 degrees at 3pm. 11 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 28th. That said it is usually colder up north. Maximum dew point of 48 at 9am. Calm wind becoming northwest 5 to 7 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. Today I’m planning on either hiking back to Pillsbury Lake or Pillsbury Mountain. 🗻 I am a bit undecided on that point. I’ve done Pillsbury Mountain before but there are nice views from the fire tower. Nice cool and clear day to boot. I just got to finish securing camp, change, and I should be on the trail by ten o’clock.

I got these really nice sunglasses 😎 from Walmart. While they are all plastic, they are lightweight but not overly dark and have good coverage over the eyes. 👀 You can almost forget that you are wearing them.

I finished reading 📖 Paul Theroux’s Deep South. What a great book. It makes me want to explore the rural south, especially the Ozarks and Missouri which seems like some really wild country with few restrictions on guns 🔫 or open burning. 🔥 Plus they are very friendly towards farming, 🐮 homesteading 🐷and off grid living. 🏡

On this day in 1965, Super Guppy took it’s first flight. ✈ The aero Spacelines Super Guppy is a large, wide-bodied cargo aircraft that is used for hauling outsize cargo components. It was the successor to the Pregnant Guppy, the first of the Guppy aircraft produced by Aero Spacelines, which in turn was named for its resemblance to a pregnant guppy. August 10, 2019 Night

Good evening! Mostly clear and 55 degrees at the Burnt-Rossman State Forest. ☔ There is a west-northwest breeze occasionally reaching 9 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 49 degrees. A pretty nice evening maybe a bit cool but we are starting to get towards autumn and it’s expected to warm up more come Sunday.

Hiking Hunter Mountain was nice 🗼 and there are some really great views from the tower. As I noted earlier, the restored old Rangers Cabin is amazing and the view is great. A lot of people there but the Spruce Horse Trail was relatively quiet. It’s a nice hike from that direction especially figuring I’m a bit out of shape these days as I’ve not been doing as much walking 🚶 recently but I plan to do more in the coming weeks.

Then I enjoyed visiting Pratt Rock which despite spending so much time in the Northern Catskills ⛲ I had never visited. It’s a short but very steep and somewhat slippery – dangerous hike to the top but great views from the summit and the historic carvings are neat although the whole area is a bit shabby and could use some rehab and maybe some blazes on the trail and a hike map.

This morning I went out to breakfast 🍳 with the parents and didn’t have much packed so I didn’t get a real early start. I am a slow hiker and I spent a lot of time at Hunter Mountain overlook do by time I was off Pratt Rock it was after 7 pm with camp more than a half hour away so it was a bit of hurry to get up there but I got the campsite I wanted and had enough time to gather firewood before dark so it all worked out.

It was cloudy and sprinkling a bit when I set up camp but it’s cleared up a bit now. ✨ Fair number of stars although the moon is blocking some out with its light. 🎑 Full moon isn’t that far off – next week. 🌕 Having a beer or two 🍻 and soon I’m going to retire to my truck for the night. 🌃 Didn’t do the hammock tonight because its a bit cool tonight and this site which was recently logged doesn’t have a lot of places to hang a hammock. I also wanted to keep camp simple as I want to sleep in tomorrow but have camp that’s relatively easy to take down so I have time to fish 🐠 before heading to Mine Kill to swim. 🏊

Summer is rapidly fading away so I should maximize it before it’s gone. 😔 It was kind of fun to drive through Greenville and Durham again but it kind of saddens me how much it’s changed in two decades and maybe how much I’ve changed. Every time I visit my old hometown I feel like Rip Van Winkle. 👴 The are so beautiful overlooking the hick town I grew up in. Unfortunately the world 🌍 of my childhood no longer exists. Maybe I should stop by the old Town Park and watch the ducks from the gazebo as I once did years ago at lunch.

I do like the small towns and the rural poor at least by the economic standards of the urban elite. I really like the dirty life, the hobby farmer in the trailer or rundown house. 🏡 It’s so much better of a life than the surburbanite life with the vinyl siding and perfect chemical treated lawn. Poor people don’t waste as much as the comfortable surburbanite.

The dew point is 49 degrees. The skies will clear around 4 pm. I’m waiting for it, hoping to get better pictures and videos. 😩

I decided today to hike up to Hunter Mountain along the West Kill trail. 🚶 Later on I plan to see Pratts Rocks in Prattsville and then head up to Burnt Rossman. ⛺ Tomorrow I’ll do some fishing 🎣 in Looking Glass Pond and hit up the farm stands in the Schoharie Valley and then swim 🏊 in Mine Kill State Park.

I fully admit if I was a responsible adult I would have gone to the Save the Pine Bush organizational meeting 🌲and stayed in town to save gas on my limited budget. But summer is rapidly fading away and I wanted to get out of town before its done and I’m sure rainy weekends aren’t that far off. ☔ I don’t feel that guilty though, I’ve spent more time on that map and researching things over the past few weeks than anything else I’ve been doing.

Driving through Greenville and stopping at the grocery store 🏬 I had forgotten what a hick town I grew up in. Fun place although I don’t know if I’d ever want to go back now with all the gun restrictions 🔫 and regulations today on open burning 🔥 – and I was surprised how expensive things were at the store. But then again in Albany I mostly shop for things on sale at Walmart. I do like the small towns and spend most of my vacation time there but its still cultural shock to go back to the community I haven’t been in regularly for going on two decades now. I’ve worked in other hick towns but the hometown is strange. The girls at the grocery store with their Irish red hair are very cute. 😍 But as I like to say, their husbands own more guns than me. Fit in well with my big jacked up truck 🚚 though. That said, I can’t see moving back to the country until I can live in a place where I can have fires and burn whatever I want on my own land. 🚜 More on that later.

I forgot how popular the Catskills are these days 🗻 but they sure are beautiful. I should do some more Catskill peaks this fall, maybe truck cap camping in Schoharie or just do day trips. I’ve been taking a lot of pictures but mostly on my 35mm camera 📷 so it will have to wait for posting until Sunday or Monday. I’m also making a ton of videos. Fortunately, despite hitting a lot of traffic around the fire tower 🗼 the ledge I’m on is relatively quiet and has nice views when you peer over the tree line. 🌲🌲🌲🌲Sun is coming out ☀ and I’m lazy so I’m procrastinating a bit but I should hurry up so I also have time to see Pratts Rocks.

July 25, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Well within the second half of vacation. Next Thursday is August 🌻. Next weekend after vacation if it’s hot I might go up to Piesco Powley Road as summer is rapidly running low. Mostly sunny and 63 degrees at the Finger Lakes National Forest. Light breeze. The dew point is 51 degrees. Beautiful morning up here at Burnt Hill on the highest point between Seneca and Cayuga Lakes. Cows are mooing in the distance. 🐮 I’m going to miss the Finger Lakes but it’s time to move on.

Today will have a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. Mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 75 degrees at 4pm. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 8th. Maximum dew point of 57 at 6pm. Should be a real nice day. Calm wind becoming northwest 5 to 8 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was very sticky. The high last year was 84 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1963.

The first step for today is to visit the Sugar Hill Firetower 🗼 then head out west to maybe Letchworth State Park or maybe directly to camp in Allegany County. ⛺ I’m not really sure, depends on the time. Then Friday I’ll head out to Quaker Lake at Allegany State Park, overnight in the National Forest and then Saturday night camp outside of Wellsboro and explore the Pine Creek Gorge. Sunday I’ll head back home, stopping a few places along the way.
