The History of Watson’s East Triangle

… from the Watson’s East Triangle Unit Management Plan.

Human occupation of the Adirondack region took place immediately following the Wisconsin glaciation period (10,000‐8,00BC). Native American artifacts representing all periods of New York prehistory have been found throughout the region, most sites being associated with water bodies. The Oswegatchie River, which is an important resource for this unit, was a boundary between the easternmost of the Iroquois nations, the Mohawks and the Oneidas. Most of the recent history of this unit revolves around hopes and dreams of early speculators and the harvesting of timber. Unfortunately much of this history has gone undocumented.

Oswegatchie River, Adirondacks

The major historical events and dates that influenced this unit are described below:

Pre 1770’s ‐ Occupied by Native American Indians

1792 ‐ Alexander Macomb purchase nearly 4,000,000 acres in northern New York for 84 an acre. Shortly following this purchase Macomb was sent to debtors prison. His holdings were taken over by his partner William Constable.

1796 ‐ James Watson acquires 61,433 acres in Herkimer and Lewis Counties comprised of two triangular pieces joined only by a narrow isthmus.

1809 ‐ James T. Watson inherits the lands of his father, James Watson.

1854 ‐ James T. Watson commits suicide; his holdings in the east triangle, are split among 44 surviving cousins.

1854‐1907 ‐ Through subsequent tax sales all of Watson’s former lands in the east triangle come into State ownership.

1907‐1912 ‐ Through tax sales the State Comptroller sells these same lands to the International Paper Company for a total of approximately $7,600.

1986 ‐ The State of New York acquires title to the remaining lands of International Paper within the Watson’s East Triangle.

1989 ‐ The State acquires 6,737 acres of the Lassiter Tract in fee, and purchases a conservation easement (Oswegatchie Tract) from the Nature Conservancy on 17,749 acres in Lewis County.

1999 ‐ Champion International sells its land holdings in New York State. The State acquires a conservation easement on 110,000 acres of these lands throughout the Adirondack Park, including the Croghan Tract. The State also acquires 29,000 acres of these lands for inclusion in the Forest Preserve. The lands acquired by the State in fee consist mostly of river corridors and other ecologically sensitive areas.

2000‐ The former IP lands are classified by APA, with much of the acreage going into Watson’s East Triangle Wild Forest, while some is classified wilderness along with reclassification of some existing acreage of WF to wilderness.

2006‐ Lands acquired in 1999 from Champion International are classified and added to the unit.

A rainy Cinco de Mayo ๐ŸŒฎ

Why are the weekends such complete shit lately I have to ask myself? It’s kind of lame. Yesterday wasn’t bad and Friday was pretty nice, but if I had gone out of town this weekend, it would have been a pretty wet morning taking down gear and driving home in the rain.

Good morning! Rain and 54 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒง๏ธ 15 mph southernly breeze. Not only is it wet, the wind is now whipping around. As they say, the sun ain’t going to shine anymore, at least not for two days straight on weekend.

This morning was eggs and hashbrowns ๐Ÿณ with lots of onions, garlic, and broccoli. Not a half bad breakfast. Last night was red lentil soup with loads of shredded carrot and spices, and a little bit of cornmeal just for that rich taste of cornmeal. Amazing how quickly a big pot of that can disappear. ๐Ÿฒ Super tasty. Pantry is getting bare but I’ll go shopping soon after I shower. :๐Ÿšฟ

Today will have showers before noon, then rain after noon. ๐ŸŒฆ High of 55 degrees at 9am. 14 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 5th. Maximum dew point of at 9am. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ South wind around 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 64 degrees. The record high of 91 was set in 1944. There was a dusting of snow in 1900.โ„

I honestly didn’t have high hopes for today, and the weather didn’t disappoint. ๐Ÿ˜” I am putting off shopping for a bit ๐Ÿ›’ as I want to visit Steiner’s and get bike tires this morning and a spare tube, ๐Ÿšฒ so I can be back on road by Monday hopefully and be good if the weather isn’t as shitty as predicted for next weekend to ride the Catskill Scenic Trail without fear of getting a flat. I could probably get away with replacing just one tire but I think I’ll spring for two so they’re matching tires, plus even the one that isn’t totally shot is pretty worn. โšซ

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:53 pm with sun having an altitude of 63.8ยฐ from the due south horizon (-7ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:21 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (287ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (294ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:01 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 9 seconds with dusk around 8:31 pm, which is one minute and 7 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:11 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 48 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 14 hours and 19 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 24 seconds over yesterday.

Going out to see the folks this afternoon, ๐Ÿ‘ช but probably won’t stay that late as I want to get the new tires mounted on the bike and the tube re-installed – – and the old tube patched if possible. Hopefully with the new tires I won’t have so many problems, but it’s been bad with the amount of broken glass there has been on the roads lately. Apparently spring comes, and everybody is tossing their beer bottles ๐Ÿพ out their car windows.

Tonight will have showers, mainly before midnight. ๐ŸŒง Low of 41 degrees at 9am. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 20th. South wind 7 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. In 2023, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 49 degrees. The record low of 29 occurred back in 1969.

I’ve just been doing a lot of reading ๐Ÿ“š and learning lately. A lot of it is as a distraction to pass time, but it’s also been as I’ve been trying to learn as much as possible about land and building a cabin. ๐Ÿ“– It was remarkably quiet ๐Ÿคซ around here, no construction ๐Ÿšง on the unit next door yesterday at least while I was home – – I was at Five Rivers ๐Ÿฆ from 8 AM through 4 PM – – and no sports games ๐Ÿˆ being played at the school ๐Ÿšธ next door. I was surprised how truly quiet it was yesterday around here. Even the evening was nice, took a nap ๐Ÿ› and enjoyed that red Lentil soup.

Still a bit bummed out about that cabin I saw go on sale on May 1st, it would have been perfect if not for the access issues. I’m not saying something like that wouldn’t need improvement, but it would have been a great start, but I would want the parcel connected to a public roadway, ๐Ÿก so I wouldn’t have to ever worry about access or improving the road.

Looking ahead, next Sunday is Mothers Day ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€ when the sun will be setting at 8:09 pm with dusk at 8:40 pm. On that day in 2023, we had a pretty hot day for May, with mostly sunny skies and temperatures between 87 and 44 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 70 degrees. I bet the black flies liked that. We hit a record high of 91 back in 1881.

I am still hoping to take off next Friday and spend a long weekend in the woods, ๐ŸŒฒbut the forecast can’t be as shitty as it currently looks for next weekend. I guess there is still five days for it to change but so far I’m not impressed.

Good morning as we wrap up our April month โ˜”

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. Rain showers around with clouds and 58 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜” There is a north breeze at 10 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 53 degrees. The skies will clear around 2 pm. At least it’s mild but really not a great morning. It’s fine though as my bike is in the shop being repaired, so I can’t ride in today, though I should have it back by Tuesday.

Back to work this morning after I have my stack of carrot and apple pancakes topped with blueberries and real maple syrup. ๐Ÿ Feeling kind of sick this morning, ๐Ÿคฎ it could be the weather, the minor eye infection I had last night ๐Ÿ‘€ or the many ticks I found on myself and later picked off between my hike up Blodgett Hill yesterday or trip out to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center the day before. I am fine, just sore and achy, tired. It’s probably Lyme, and maybe I’ll end up going to the doctor before the end of the week if I remain feeling so damn sick. It’s been four years since I last got Lyme so I’m probably due for it, that tick I pulled off my foot this morning didn’t help or the one I felt yesterday climbing up my back or the one I pulled off my hand when I was reading at Five Rivers. ๐Ÿž They’re really out there in mass today.

Today will be scattered sprinkles before 9am. Clearing and becoming partly sunny ๐ŸŒค๏ธ, with a high of 67 degrees at 4pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 2nd. Maximum dew point of 53 at 6am. North wind 7 to 10 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 56 degrees. The record high of 88 was set in 1888. 1.0 inches of snow fell back in 1885.โ„

Apparently in delaying the replacement of the chain on my bike, I stripped out the gears โš™ and they’re being replaced early this week. Amazing how a $30 job I could do in a few minutes at home becomes a $200 job if you don’t pay attention. I need to get new tires too, and that will work out to being $250 in the hole, but riding my bike is still cheaper and more pleasant then driving or taking the bus to work, ๐Ÿš especially now with the suburban office. I haven’t ordered the tires yet, but I should get some either online or pick them up on the bike shop when I pick the bike up on Wednesday. I’ll probably have to go in late that day and drive to work.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:53 pm with sun having an altitude of 62ยฐ from the due south horizon (-8.8ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:15 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (285ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (291ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:54 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 6 seconds with dusk around 8:24 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:02 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 64 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 5 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 32 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after midnight. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 53 degrees at 5am. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 30th. Maximum dew point of 47 at 6am. North wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2023, we had light rain in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 48 degrees. The record low of 25 occurred back in 1874.

Not a particularly nice weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜ž Saturday, a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 65. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 49 at 4pm. Sunday, a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 67. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 51 at 1pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 68 degrees.

Looking ahead, there are 8 weeks until Latest Sunset ๐ŸŒ† when the sun will be setting at 8:38 pm with dusk at 9:12 pm. On that day in 2023, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 86 and 61 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 82 degrees. We hit a record high of 96 back in 1943.

Shotgun Love songs ๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿšœ

That was the name of the trashy audio book I’ve been listening to that has a distinct taste of silage and smallest town life. It’s a story about several small town people, a rock and roll star and a family living on a dairy in Wisconsin, you know bonfires, working the land, etc. I’m just tired of the crowded east coast and the values of the eastern establishment and those who play to their values in the most scummy of ways, I’m probably talking about myself or maybe Bob Moses.

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Sunny and 31 degrees in Bethlehem, NY. ๐ŸŒž There is a north breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ.

Taking the bus to work today as I found another small, slow leak in my bike tube. ๐Ÿš Apparently whatever I ran over put several small wire shards through the tube. I should get some fix a leak — next time I go to the store and fill both of my tires with it, and pick up an extra tube just so I have it in reserve so I’m not waiting for a patch to dry, unsuccessfully. I think I let that rear tire go too long before rotating it, and I concede even now I’ve rotated the tires, I need to get new tires soon.

Going to get off at the Empire Plaza and walk North Pearl Street๐Ÿšถ to work as I did yesterday. I think this route is a bit longer then walking along Broadway, but I like the change and I think this route is a bit more interesting then Broadway with better views of the cliffs above. It’s a nice walk to work but I’m hoping my second tire patch, on another hole in the tube holds and I’m back riding tonight. Or maybe I can get another tube at the local bike shop if this one just ain’t going to hold air.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 54 degrees at 3pm. 10 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 5th. North wind 6 to 8 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies. The high last year was 54 degrees. The record high of 89 was set in 2009. 0.3 inches of snow fell back in 1928.โ„

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:54 pm with sun having an altitude of 60.8ยฐ from the due south horizon (-10.1ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:10 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (283ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (289ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:49 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 4 seconds with dusk around 8:19 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:56 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 51 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 54 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 37 seconds over yesterday.

That whole thing about somebody jumping off the bridge yesterday ๐Ÿช‚ next to my office ๐Ÿข got a lot of interest in the office but I didn’t really care, I had work to do. It’s possible that from the opposite side of the building you could see the bridge where he jumped from but certainly not where he fell. Sometimes there are crashes and other delays along the interchange. Despite driving ๐Ÿš˜ in on Tuesday I didn’t notice any delays in particular.

Tonight will be clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 28 degrees at 5am. 13 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 23rd. Northwest wind around 5 mph. In 2023, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 30 degrees. The record low of 24 occurred back in 1972.

The weekend looks to be fairly mild but not all that great. ๐ŸŒฅ Saturday, a slight chance of showers after 2pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 63. South wind 5 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. Maximum dew point of 36 at 9pm. Sunday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 71. Maximum dew point of 56 at 4pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 65 degrees.

Looking ahead, there are 10 weeks until Independence Day ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ when the sun will be setting at 8:37 pm with dusk at 9:10 pm. On that day in 2023, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 84 and 54 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 83 degrees. We hit a record high of 104 back in 1911.
