Good evening! Heavy rain and 41 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜” There is a north breeze at 10 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 7 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Kind of a dreary day. โ˜” I worked from home all day and it poured for most of the afternoon into the evening but I guess it’s helping with the rain deficit. Being so wet and with increased threat of snow and ice I’m calling off my weekend plans – even though with work they never were realistic. I would have spent half my weekend shivering in a tent next to the heater and laptop.

Tonight will rain before 3am, then rain and snow. ๐ŸŒง Low of 33 degrees at 6am. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 13th. North wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. In 2019, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 57 degrees. The record low of 20 occurred back in 1969.

With the rain this evening, no walk. ๐Ÿšถ๐ŸปI ended up reading some articles about various things on my phone ๐Ÿ“ฑ and scrolling through various Wikipedia articles. Kind of a dull but busy day. ๐Ÿ’ฆ Rain is really pouring on the roof today but it will be snow by morning. Maybe a lot in the mountains?

Tonight will have a Full ๐ŸŒ Moon with 97% illuminated. At 9 PM, the moon was in the southeast (126ยฐ) at an altitude of 37ยฐ from the horizon, some 251,961 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. ๐Ÿš€ At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by May 8th. North wind 8 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 63 degrees. The record high of 80 was set in 1946. 0.1 inches of snow fell back in 1925.โ„

I thought originally it would clear out early tomorrow but hearing all that rain pound down โ˜” I’m pulling the plug on the weekend for staying closer to home ๐Ÿก and working from home and then going out to the folks house on Sunday. ๐Ÿฒ

I am leaning towards voting in person on Tuesday now. ๐Ÿ—ณ I thought about mailing ๐Ÿ“ฌ my ballot back on Monday just to stick my tongue ๐Ÿ˜ out at the system but it silly and it turns out that my polling place has moved across from the bus stop. ๐ŸšI’ll just vote on my way to work or if there is a line drop off my absentee ballot.

Mild evening, I went for my evening walk ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป and it was rain free and quite nice. After feeling a bit congested this afternoon ๐Ÿ‘ƒ๐Ÿป it was nice to get out and get some fresh air.

Spent some time studying historical maps and geocoding them this evening. ๐Ÿ—บ You can learn a lot by studying old maps and comparing them to modern maps. The topic really fascinates me.

Good evening! Clear and 42 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒŒ Calm wind. Another very cold night on tap.

Today was a nice day, ๐ŸŒฒ๐Ÿ›๐Ÿธ๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿฆ† doing some hiking and poking around the Pine Bush. I wanted to go to Black Creek Marsh but I didn’t get a very early start as I got listening to the news ๐Ÿ“ฐ and then I ended up working on some code for my blog.

I am thinking about getting up fairly early and doing some bird watching ๐Ÿฆ at Black Creek Marsh Wildlife Management Area in the morning. ๐ŸŒ… I haven’t been there since spring and it’s nice. I was going to do that this morning and then last night but I didn’t get an early start.

Still dealing with really gross socks ๐Ÿงฆ. I’m hopeful this time with soaking them they’ll get nice and clean. I will rinse them out come morning.

Got my new mask from Lynne Jackson. ๐Ÿ˜ท I will still wear the bandana when I’m out and about but when I’m working downtown it’s better to have something cooler and more comfortable.

August 29, 2020 Night

Good evening! Cloudy and damp around 70 degrees on Delmar. โ˜๏ธ There is a west breeze at 13 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 67 degrees. The skies will clear around 9 pm.

Not a super nice day so I stayed home ๐Ÿก and read and worked on a variety of little projects. I wanted to go for an evening walk ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป but the threat of rain was much too high. Tomorrow I’ll get out hiking. Put together some new maps ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธand stuff for the blog, was reading another book ๐Ÿ“™ about homesteading. ๐Ÿ Cheeses and dairy science is fascinating stuff ๐Ÿง€ – minor changes in processing milk ๐Ÿฅ› can create vastly different effects products or more likely ruin it entirely.

I finally baked up that cookie mix ๐Ÿชthat expired in April. Good peanut ๐Ÿฅœ butter cookies that I bought last fall for my West Virginia trip but never eat. ๐Ÿ˜‹ I figured I better eat it before the mice get in an chew holes in the packaging.๐ŸIt’s been a bad year for mice in the woods – something people were talking about yesterday on Facebook and I noticed we’re bad both in the Finger Lakes and Piseco Powley Road.

At 9 PM, the moon was in the south-southeast (156ยฐ) at an altitude of 21ยฐ from the horizon, some 239,388 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. ๐Ÿš€ At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by February 27th. Buckle up for safety! ๐Ÿ’บ The darkest hour is at 12:57 am, followed by dawn at 5:49 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:19 am in the east-northeast (77ยฐ) and last for 2 minutes and 59 seconds. Tonight will have 10 hours and 44 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 44 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 72 degrees at 3pm. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 16th. Maximum dew point of 58 at 7am. Northwest wind 13 to 15 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 82 degrees. The record high of 98 was set in 1953. The great Heat Wave of 1953.

Should be a nice autumn like day. ๐Ÿ‚ Nice change from the humidity and stormy weather today. I am thinking of doing some hiking and fishing ๐ŸŽฃ at Partridge Run tomorrow. Should be a great day to spend outdoors but maybe a bit chilly by the time I go out to my parents house for Sunday dinner. ๐Ÿฒ But then again, Tuesday is September. Summer has quickly bit the dust.

I get so tired of hearing so many police ๐Ÿšจ sirens lately. The past few months they really have been abusing them it seems. For a while they were relatively quiet, tapping the sirens only briefly at the traffic light ๐Ÿšฆ to warn motorists but lately it’s been non-stop and it’s annoying. That and the super throaty motorcycles and trucks ๐Ÿ. Maybe I’m noticing it more this year as I’m home all of the time I’m not in the woods enjoying the quiet. ๐Ÿคซ

I am planning my next trip after Labor Day Weekend. ๐Ÿ‚ I’ll have to get out my blaze orange and gun cleaned up at that point. I’m thinking the Spectulator Area most likely especially if I’m planning several weekdays because the library is a pleasant place to work for Zoom Meetings. After October 1st I might camp and work from a combination of Stoney Pond State Forest and Charles Baker. โ›บ I can probably get Wi-Fi at the Cazenovia and Hamilton libraries out there for Zoom. Remote work has its benefits. ๐Ÿ’ปNo permit is needed for Stoney Pond State Forest after October 1st and it’s unlikely I’ll see anyone there except maybe a grizzled old hunter. ๐ŸŽซ Fishing in Nelson Swamp is a lot of fun too.

I really enjoy reading and looking at pictures of folks off grid properties on the Facebook. ๐Ÿก I just really like the simple and the small with lots of land in remote country. Some folks are really fancy or big builders but that certainly aint me. Some are into art work and making things pretty but I’m fine with chipboard for walls. The less you have, the less to spend money on, the less to break or have to throw away regularly. ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ

I’ve considered doing a trip in October to the Finger Lakes ๐Ÿ’ป and remote working from there but I have concerns about the length of day and having enough sunlight then to keep things charged and the long trip back to Albany after hours should something break that I can’t continue to work from there likedead fuse, inverter or other problems with the solar system which I couldn’t fix in the field. โฌ› It would be fun though to enjoy the leaves, ๐Ÿ hunt before 9 AM ๐Ÿฟ๏ธ๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿฆƒand then work the rest of the day from camp but maybe exhausting to boot. At the National Forest you can camp for two weeks in one site, no permits required.

I also don’t want to put on too many miles or break shit in my truck ๐Ÿ”งbefore the state inspection in November. Since addressing the tire wear issue on the truck in June things have been a lot better at slowing the wear and I’m not concerned about this year’s inspection but I also don’t want to have any kind of costly repairs this autumn if possible. ๐Ÿ”ฉ

In four weeks on September 26 the sun will be setting in the west (269ยฐ) at 6:45 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 49 minutes and 15 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had partly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 69 and 53 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 68 and 47 degrees. The record high of 90 degrees was set back in 2017.

Looking ahead, Northern Zone Regular Season ๐ŸฆŒ is in 7 weeks, Halloween ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ and the Blue Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 9 weeks, Small Business Saturday ๐Ÿ›๏ธ is in 13 weeks, Repeal of Prohibition Day ๐Ÿบ is in 14 weeks, Boxing Day ๐ŸฅŠ is in 17 weeks, Cold Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 4 months, Static Electric Shock Day ๐Ÿงผ is in 19 weeks, National Cheese Lovers Day ๐Ÿง€ is in 21 weeks, 38th Birthday ๐ŸŽ‰ is in 5 months, Save the Pine Bush Turns 43 ๐Ÿฆ‹ is in 23 weeks, 5:30 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ† is in 25 weeks, Snow Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 26 weeks and Snow Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 26 weeks.

Schoharie Valley

December 27, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Already, it’s Friday! Next Friday is Latest Sunrise of the Winter 🌄๏ธ. Cloudy and 41 degrees at the Elm Ave Park & Ride – CDTA. โ˜ There is a south breeze at 9 mph. 🍃. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 8 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Getting ready for my road trip. โ›บ I have my packing list ready to and tonight I’ll go to the grocery store and get the needed supplies. I want to get another power cord 🔌, I’m hoping they’ll have one on sale. Got to check the oil in the truck, I’ve renewed my library books 📚 but I might want to get a few more. I have mantles ready for the lantern 🏮, I have growing confidence it will work besides deciding against testing it at home. I’ll make sure my Bluetooth speaker 🔊 and charge packs are fully charged. It should be a good trip even if things are bit wet and muddy Sunday into Monday – I’ll bring my muck boots and insulated hunting boots 👢. I am also bringing my muskrat trapping gear and will set up some sets on some of farm ponds at the national forest. 🐀

Today will have scattered showers, mainly before 4pm. Cloudy 🌦, with a high of 50 degrees at 2pm. 18 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 11th. I didn’t bring a rain coat โ˜” but I’m not anticipating rain this afternoon and its not raining now. South wind 7 to 9 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 35 degrees. The record high of 60 was set in 1895. 15 inches of snow fell back in 1894.โ„

The sun will set at 4:28 pm with dusk around 5:00 pm, which is 40 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for rain 🌧 and temperatures around 49 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 4 minutes of daytime, an increase of 22 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a low of 34 degrees at 6am. 17 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 8th. South wind 5 to 9 mph becoming northwest in the evening. In 2018, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 35 degrees. The record low of -14 occurred back in 1951.

Tomorrow will be mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny โ˜, with a high of 44 degrees at 2pm. 12 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 26th. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph becoming light in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 50 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 1982. 7 inches of snow fell back in 1967.โ„

Looking ahead to Sunday, a chance of rain, mainly after 4pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 41. โ˜€ Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. I think it will be a bit wetter and warmer on Sunday in the Finger Lakes but in exchange it will clear out earlier there on Monday. Typical average high for the weekend is 32 degrees.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, โ›บ I’m just glad to be getting away for a few days this weekend into next week. The Adirondacks are nice but ultimately they’re more of a weekend trip than anything else – I go up there a lot and the Finger Lakes are a much larger trip. 🚙 I am almost certain now my route of choice at least on the way there is going to US 20 to Nelson then cut through Erieville and Sheds to NY 13 over to Cortland and down to Ithaca. I haven’t been over that way in years and it would be nice to see the farms, small towns and rural landscape. 🚜

As previously noted, next Friday is Latest Sunrise of the Winter 🌄๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 4:34 pm with dusk at 5:05 pm. On that day in 2019, we had snow showers, mostly cloudy, mild and temperatures between 43 and 32 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 31 degrees. We hit a record high of 61 back in 1913.

Looking Thru Trees Towards East Hill

December 26, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Boxing Day ๐ŸฅŠ! Good day for burning all those boxes ๐Ÿ”ฅ that the Christmas presents ๐Ÿ“ฆ came in. Although I guess the greenies say the rednecks of the world should recycle โ™ป them. Apparently recycling cardboard is a good idea. Probably good for soaking up mud too. Christmas ๐ŸŽ„ is over, now they can go back to playing Freda Paine ๐Ÿ’ for the hundred ๐Ÿ’ฏ millionth time on the radio ๐Ÿ“ป. Or whatever is trendy these days, although Band of Gold is pretty singable. Does anybody even listen ๐Ÿ‘‚ to commercial radio anymore in the era of the MP3? I rarely do. Two weeks to Static Electric Shock Day ๐Ÿงผ๐ŸŒฉ. I fully expect it to be cold and dry enough then to get a good shock. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ I know in the state office building I used to work in the air was purty dry.

This morning is partly cloudy โ›… around freezing degrees at the Elm Ave Park & Ride – CDTA. Calm wind ๐Ÿƒ. Not a half bad morning for late December. Bus is running on time ๐Ÿš Going to be another mild day, they’re is a trooper sitting at the Southern Boulevard Bridge. ๐ŸŒ‰ 45 mph section so probably not a lot of speeders but maybe he’s sitting up there looking for people yapping on their cellphones ๐Ÿ“ฑ. I know I can’t talk and drive, I find it hard to remember things when driving like what day of week it is. That said, I drive so little and when I’m on the road I often are in the sticks where there ain’t reception ๐Ÿ“ถ. I really should hook the bluetooth back up with my phone on my truck, it got reset the last time I reset my phone. But I use it so rarely, it’s hardly needed.

Today will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a high of 41 degrees at 2pm. Eight degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 3rd. Light and variable wind. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 35 degrees. The record high of 59 was set in 1895. 13.9 inches of snow fell back in 1969.โ„

The sun will set at 4:27 pm with dusk around 4:59 pm, which is 39 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies โ˜ and temperatures around 40 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 9 hours and 3 minutes of daytime, an increase of 18 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of rain showers, snow showers, freezing rain, and sleet before midnight, then a chance of rain showers between midnight and 3am, then a chance of freezing rain after 3am. Sounds, charming, eh? I actually thought about leaving work on Friday early and driving out to Madison County but I decided it against it based on the forecast. Cloudyโ˜” , with a low of 32 degrees at 9pm. 15 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 16th. South wind 6 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Little or no snow and sleet accumulation expected. In 2018, we had light snow in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 24 degrees. The record low of -18 occurred back in 1914.

This weekend is going to very mild as especially out in the Finger Lakes but will end with a pretty good rain storm. Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 43. Northwest wind 5 to 9 mph becoming light in the afternoon. โ˜€ Sunday, a chance of rain after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 44. Chance of precipitation is 50%.โ˜” Typical average high for the weekend is 32 degrees. It looks like Sunday evening into the Monday morning will be a good soaker, but I will bring extra tarps and books to read in the tent if it’s cold and wet.๐ŸŒง The heater will get keep the tent real comfortable. โ™จGood warm meals will be good even if it’s rainy,ย  ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿณ and if I gather plenty of wood up on Saturday into Sunday, ๐Ÿช“ I’ll have enough for a good fire on Monday and New Years Eve.๐Ÿ”ฅ

Never got around to testing the propane lantern. ๐Ÿฎ I think it’s working fine though, and I’m not sure what else I can do to repair it besides knock out that shit ton of carbon that I already knocked out of it. ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿ’จ I realized if I tested it at home, I’d end up with a ton of propane in the line, that I’d have to burn out, and with only the latern hooked up, the pressure is such that it can take 15-20 minutes for all the propane to burn out of the line. I’ll bring a wrench to camp in case I need further adjustments, but I think it will work well now. ๐Ÿ”ง

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Static Electric Shock Day ๐Ÿงผ ๐ŸŒฉ when the sun will be setting at 4:40 pm with dusk at 5:11 pm. On that day in 2019, we had rain and temperatures between 40 and 32 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 30 degrees. We hit a record high of 62 back in 2008.

Eleven degrees doesn't seem that bad

December 23, 2019 Night

Good evening! Partly clear and 36 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a west breeze at 5 mph. 🍃. There is a inch of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธTemperatures will drop below freezing around 2 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

It’s actually a pretty nice evening, 🌃 and I sat out back for over an hour when it started to cool off a little bit. It wasn’t until quite late that it really started to drop off. Not going to be quite as nice in the Finger Lakes but not that awful either with each day expected to reach the mid 40s. Hard to complain about such weather on Festivus and I got a nice walk 🚶 before dark as I got out of work early today.

After which I came inside and rode the exercise bike 🚲 for a while listening 👂 to more of that trucker country 🚚 that I like from the late 1960s. That music 🎶 is crude and sleazy and sexist, probably gives one a taste of cigarette 🚬 and diesel 💨 on one’s mouth but it’s good for singing along especially if you’re not a real good singer and it has a good back beat. 🎸

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌤, with a low of 28 degrees at 6am. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 29th. Northwest wind 5 to 11 mph. In 2018, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 31 degrees. Even milder last year. The record low of -15 occurred back in 1989.

Tonight will have a Waning Crescent Moon 🌘 with 1% illuminated. The moon will rise at 5:38 am. The New Moon is on Christmas Day with mostly cloudy skies. The sun will rise at 7:22 am with the first light at 6:50 am, which is 28 seconds later than yesterday. 🌄 Tonight will have 14 hours and 57 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 7 seconds over last night. We never quite have 15 hours of darkness in Albany but if you go maybe to Warrensburg or there about, you do on the first day of winter. They have slightly longer summer days then more southerly locations but ultimately it balances out.

Tomorrow will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 36 degrees at 1pm. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 16th. North wind around 7 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 40 degrees. The record high of 72 was set in 2015. I remember that day we’ll, rained a fair bit then I went to my parents house – after working until 3pm and they lost power briefly while cooking Christmas dinner. Spent Christmas that year camping at the Cherry Ridge Camping Area in Madison County. 13 inches of snow fell back in 1966.โ„

I thought about testing the propane lantern 🏮 after work today but I have no where to test it around home. I normally hang it between trees on a rope at camp but there are no trees around where I live because the landlord cut down all the trees on his property to avoid liability and leaf removal costs, although in the summer neighboring property trees seem to provide enough shade to keep the buildings cool. I feel like the lantern should work now that I cleaned it a few weeks and if it doesn’t I don’t know how I’m going to fix it before heading out to camp on Saturday.

While I haven’t really planned out my whole camping trip yet โ›บ I do have some things in mind and I’m thinking about what I will need for camping and my packing list 📃. I might start doing a little packing on Christmas Day 🎄 as I told John Wolcott I’ll be over to his house on Thursday after work 🔎and then Friday I’ll have to finish packing and getting finished for camp as I don’t want to delay my departure. I hate driving NY 79 through Ithaca with all the aggressive drivers so I’ll probably take US 20 out but that’s a long drive. Alternatively I guess I could take NY 13 down through Cortland but that can be pokey too. Seneca Falls, decorated as Bedford Falls 🌉 is fun to explore during the holiday season, Montezuma Wildlife Refuge will be closed for the winter. 🐦

In four weeks on January 20 the sun will be setting at 4:52 pm,🌄 which is 26 minutes and 47 seconds later then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had snow and temperatures between 21 and 0 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 30 and 14 degrees. The record high of 53 degrees was set back in 2006.

Not sure I’m happy with the current voltage settings on the voltage switch. 🔋 Neither the starting or the accessory batteries were well charged today, but then again I only got like 30 watt hours of power today. It said that the starting battery charged for 3 minutes today, not sure if the switch tripped multiple times. I may have to push the switch up to 14.0 volts again but in the lousey sun angle โ˜€ of winter not sure if I’m going to ever have enough power to make it ever engage. I might raise the voltage for camping as maximizing the accessory batteries charge us kind of a priority with the long cold winter nights. It easy enough to adjust those settings.

So far I’ve been fairly happy with the red screen both on my laptop and phone 📱 but it’s a pain to get things adjusted just right. But once the settings are good enough I can just turn them on and off and hopefully that will help with sleep 😴. Definitely it’s good to tone down the blue light from my computer monitor 💻.

I really do watch too many farm, hunting, trapping and off grid living videos on YouTube 📹 but it’s a much needed change from my urban life and takes me to worlds far away from Albany. A camera can bring you into a tie stall dairy barn and see the milking and feeding, show how to skin and process a coyote pelt or even many the day to day parts of living off grid with limited electricity generated on site, heating irg wood, etc. 🐻Wisdom shared over a camera. Because I downloaded the videos and watch them offline, I don’t have to watch those stupid ads but I also don’t get to like or comment on people’s channels. But if I had the internet at home, I’d probably be distracted all the other mindless things to do on the internet. 😼
