June 15, 2020 10 PM Update

Good evening! Mostly clear and 69 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. The dew point is 49 degrees. Not a half bad evening not really hot.

Today was a long day at work 💼 but I got two hours of overtime so I can’t complain too much. Working late though meant I couldn’t walk out to Five Rivers after work but I did get down to the park ⛲ and walked some of the trails in the ravine. A found a tick on my neck which I pulled. 🐜 It was a butch to remove. I got podcasts so I was happy about that. 🎧 I kind of wish I could have been on the wifi today as sometimes watching a movie picture in pictures can pass the time when I work, especially the more boring 💤 parts of the day.

Tonight will have patchy fog after 5am. Otherwise, mostly clear 🌃, with a low of 51 degrees at 5am. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 29th. Maximum dew point of 49 at 8pm. Light northwest wind. In 2019, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It became somewhat humid as the night progressed. It got down to 63 degrees. The record low of 40 occurred back in 1961.

Tonight will have a Waining Crescent 🌘 Moon with 24% illuminated. The darkest hour is at 12:57 am, followed by dawn at 4:43 am, and sun starting to rise at 5:18 am in the east-northeast (57°) and last for 3 minutes and 27 seconds. Sunrise is one second later than yesterday. 🌄 The golden hour ends at 6:01 am with sun in the east-northeast (64°). Tonight will have 8 hours and 41 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 21 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 81 degrees at 4pm. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 26th. Maximum dew point of 52 at 10am. Calm wind. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 68 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1967.

I couldn’t sit out back because Big Red 🚘 is still at the shop with my lawn chair out back. As usually is the case when you have alignment issues and tire wear, the tie rods and ball joints needed replacement to do the alignment but I’d rather replace them then have them break on the trail or road. When they snap sometimes they do body damage or cause the truck to roll depending on the speed they snap. And the internet is full of Chevy pictures with snapped tie rods, it’s a meme. 😭

Those Chevy’s have notoriously weak tie rods and with the lift kit they’re do for replacement at 90k miles. 🔧 But hopefully this will even out the tire wear and things will last at least through the inspection in November. ⚫ It was noticeable just looking at the front wheels over the past year – they’ve been looking fairly messed up for a while. Cheaper than new tires or renting a car when the wheel fell off. Not a lot of tire wear up front but it’s obvious looking at them they were a bit messed up and the classic popping noise of the ball joints could be heard at times.⚪ A little less than $1,200 later I’ll have the truck back tomorrow. But so be it – I’ve already budgeted for it when I bought the lift kit six years ago – figured $5,000 for the lift kit then $5,000 for repairs thereafter.

I did plan for this week as I knew I would work late several nights 💵 and earn some overtime which adds up at time and a half. This will be a good week for billable hours at my job. I’ll retire the debt tomorrow from savings and hopefully the rest of the summer will be trouble free with the trugk.

I want to get two more summers out of it and I’ll make a decision next year at the end of 2021 if I want to retire Big Red and go carless for a few years. 🚲 I think it would be fun to have a bicycle and ride around town, do more things in town, maybe get a drink somewhere or even have internet at home and just rent a car a few times a year for road trips. I’m ready for not having to deal with the automotive industry or car insurance for a few years. Even with Uber fees and car rentals it really is a big savings. A lot of my colleagues have gone carless – they rent a car, take a bus or train, or Uber everywhere. I know the reaction I get from people is I’m nuts.

That said, at least I shouldn’t have to worry so much about either of those things failing anytime soon 🚘 or saving miles at this point. I’ve been a bit concerned about the tie rods for a while, I knew they were getting bad. I’m probably still considering going north for the second half of the week ⛺ as even if I do work long days as long as I have power and cell service I can log the hours ⏳ and get the work done that needs to happen from my screen tent 🎪 it hammock or even by the campfire. 🔥

I run a tight budget and I’m always saving where I can 💸but I love 😍 being in the woods and I give up plenty of other things my colleagues enjoy like nicer apartments, air conditioning, wireless internet, cable television, haul my own trash to the transfer station and I take the bus to work. 🚘 Big Red is kind of my guilty pleasure but I paid cash for it so I’ve never paid any financing fees for it. And I’m investing a lot of money and saving for retirement. But I’m not perfect.

And while land and implements is expensive 🚜 I do expect by then to have more money and when you own land you don’t pay rent. 🏡 And if I live off grid there won’t be electric and gas bills, especially if I can harvest wood for heat. 🔌 I doubt I’ll ever have cable or wireless internet and I expect my trash will go up in smoke – that is besides the cans and glass for recycling ♻ .

In four weeks on July 13 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (301°) at 8:32 pm,🌄 which is 2 minutes and 42 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had hot, partly sunny and temperatures between 88 and 65 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 83 and 62 degrees. The record high of 96 degrees was set back in 1894.

Looking ahead, Average High is 80 🏖 is in 1 week.

January 14, 2020 Night

Good evening! Cloudy and 39 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ There is a south breeze at 8 mph. 🍃. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Thursday around 4 pm. ☃️

I walked down to the library for a while to return my books 📚. I was going to work on the John Wolcott project but I’ve had little ambition to do that much data entry after a busy day at work. 📇 He’s out of the hospital and feeling better, I’ll be back over on Friday. I really think I want to spend time cleaning up the existing sorted files 📂 and getting better labels 🔖 on the folders. Rode the exercise bike 🚲 for a few minutes but stopped as my neighbor came home and lately it’s been quite squeaky. I’m hoping I can lubricate and tighten it up and get rid of the noise. It is pretty old and hardly a quiet machine at this point.

Neighbors have a candle burning in their window as I go to bed. 🕯️ I sure hope they’re keeping an eye on it 👀 and not falling asleep with it at still burning 🔥. I actually am going to make sure that I know where my wallet is and laptop bag before bed in case my neighbor’s place catches fire. 🛋️ Its not directly connected to my building but if it caught fire, there is a risk of fire brands hitting my building so I would have to evacuate. I am all for using fire in a controlled way – its great for restoring habitats, heating buildings, cooking food and disposing of waste in rural areas – but it’s such a menace especially in the cities. 🌇 I’m sure it will be fine or so I hope.

Tonight will have a chance of drizzle or light rain before 11pm, then a slight chance of drizzle between 11pm and 2am. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 35 degrees at 6am. 21 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 8th. South wind 7 to 13 mph becoming west after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2019, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became light snow by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 10 degrees. The record low of -20 occurred back in 1957.

Tonight will have a Waning Gibbous 🌖 Moon. The darkest hour is at 12:05 am, followed by dawn at 6:53 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:24 am in the east-southeast (119°) and last for 3 minutes and 19 seconds. Sunrise is 24 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌄 The golden hour ends at 8:08 am with sun in the southeast (127°) at an altitude of 6°. Tonight will have 14 hours and 37 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 35 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 43 degrees at 1pm. 13 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 12th. Northwest wind 6 to 10 mph. Should be a very pleasant day. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 33 degrees. The record high of 65 was set in 1995. 13.4 inches of snow fell back in 1983.❄

It wasn’t a bad day at work, meeting went well. 💼 Busy today but I got another report finalized on my end of things. Making good progress. I got a nice complement from my boss to a client. Busy but so drab in that windowless office 🏢 with those cool white florescent bulbs. But I’m getting stuff done, getting results for clients.

I got bumped by a car 🚙 in a crosswalk today 💥but I wasn’t injured. I thought I made eye contact 👀 with the driver but I was kind of day dreaming and neither of us were looking. I bumped my hand into the hood of his truck but I never hit the bumper and didn’t do any damage. Got to be more careful crossing the streets. I haven’t had a close call like that in years – once before something similar happened in college – but I know it’s definitely possible to get in a much worse accident then getting brushed by a car. 🚶 Drivers just don’t pay attention. Neither do I at times when I say dream. 💭 Pine Busher Lynne Jackson and bicycle activist Burt Shou has been warning ⚠ me about this for years.

In my suit 👔I do see myself getting old and gray in parts and with only a little over 3 years until I’m forty years old I really should try to understand myself and my future better. 👴 Still researching counseling services. I should just make an appointment and its only $25. I don’t like it, I don’t have to go back. But I could become a better person. 👪 It’s great to save for my future but I really should figure out if I should be looking to do other things in the meantime. Old age creeps up suddenly and I don’t want to be at a place where I can no longer do the things I want to do, like moving out west to rural town, my off grid property or hobby farm. 🚜 Watching YouTube videos has me constantly thinking about all the other way people live and put food on their table. Some options will never be open to me, but if I have a better plan and more confidence I can open new doors for my future. 🚪I wish I could walk into a room, have a firm hand shake and be more charismatic and not a reserved somewhat crude hillbilly in a suit.

As I mentioned earlier, Iowa always seems like a fun state but not a lot of public land and land there can be super expensive due to amazing soils. 🌽 I follow Iowa Dairy Boys and a few other farm channels on the YouTube 🐮 and while some of the farming isn’t that different than here in New York with old tie stall barns, they also have some really big and very fertile fields that are uncommon except for a few deep valleys in New York like the Genesee Valley of Western NY. But those are tiny in comparison to the vast fertile Iowa prarie. They also get quite a bit of snow and cold in Iowa – they’re winters are cooler than New York but hotter on summer due to the lack of moderating Atlantic Ocean. I also follow an off gridder in a shed to home 🏡 in Iowa, as you might guess in a rural state like that many of rural areas are reasonably laid back on zoning and codes. I do love 😍 learning about how those farm families fight the forces of nature and the market to scratch together a living often on the margins. They might have a lot of investment in their land and operations but even in Iowa are often struggling to make ends meet.

In four weeks on February 11 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (251°) at 5:21 pm,🌄 which is 35 minutes and 47 seconds later then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had partly cloudy, snow showers and temperatures between 33 and 18 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 34 and 17 degrees. The record high of 59 degrees was set back in 1981.

Looking ahead, Don’t Cry over Spilled Milk Day 🥛 is in 4 weeks, Valentines Day ❤️ is a month away, National Drink Wine Day 🍷 is in 5 weeks, St. Patrick’s Day 🍀 is in 9 weeks, 7:30 PM Sunset 🌇 is in 12 weeks, Cinco de Mayo 🤠 is in 16 weeks, Fathers Day 👨 is in 5 months, Primary Day 🗳️ is in 23 weeks and Election Day 2020 🗳️ is in 42 weeks.

January 6, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. It’s a five day work week once again. Been a long time since I’ve worked a full five day week but it should be busy and go quickly. Next Monday is Make Your Dream Come True Day 🏡. Maybe that’s a bit too soon for he but I can continue to save and invest. Snow showers and 28 degrees at the Elm Ave Park & Ride – CDTA. ❄ Made for kind of a icy walk 🚶 to the express bus 🚍 this morning and I was running a little late but I made it in time. ⌚ And I did not slip and fall, even those a few times it was a slosh. There is a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. 🍃. There are 0.2 inches of snow on the ground. ☃ ️Things will start to thaw out at around 10 am. 🌡️

Finished off the quiche that I made up on Sunday. 🥧 It was very good, and no I did not die or have any bad taste from cooking up the pie shell that had officially expired on November 16, 2016. 😋 It was pretty good and used up a bunch of eggs, with lots of broccoli, 🌱 cheese topping 🧀 and breadcrumbs 🍞 from some stale bread in the refrigerator. Except for the issue of the broiler not working well, it came out pretty good. You know it’s good if it only lasted for two breakfasts, and I was a hurry to have it both mornings. I got to make it again, but I need more broccoli and another pie shell mix, this time maybe with an expiration date six years newer or so.

Kind of a pretty day with the snow ❄ enough to glaze up the sidewalks and ramps. There was a wreck on one of circle stack ramps ⭕💢🚓🚕🚗🚙🚙🚚 and traffic is just generally moving slow today. Warm enough though with the salt that on the major roads, things are moving well if a bit slow. But thanks to Iran and Trump 🎺 there are delays on the bus turn around due to the gates being closed due to the supposed terrorist warnings. It’s annoying how sometimes the bus has to wait for the gates to open and close. I guess they are supposed to keep people safe, but we know it’s mostly to make the contractors rich with security theater.❎

Today will have a chance of snow, mainly before 4pm. Mostly cloudy 🌨, with a high of 37 degrees at 1pm. Six degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 23rd. South wind 6 to 15 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than one inch possible. With the warmer temperatures I’m thinking the icy sidewalks won’t stick around. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 44 degrees. The record high of 71 was set in 2007. 12.7 inches of snow fell back in 2002.❄

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:02 pm with sun having an altitude of 24.9° from the due south horizon (-46° vs. 6/21). Almost to 25 degrees. Maybe tomorrow? The golden hour 🏅 starts at 3:52 pm with the sun in the southwest (232°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-southwest (240°) starting at 4:34 pm and lasts for 3 minutes and 23 seconds with dusk around 5:08 pm, which is 58 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 5:44 pm. At sunset, look for snow 🌨 and temperatures around 36 degrees. There will be a west breeze at 15 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 11 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 4 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌤, with a low of 25 degrees at 5am. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 14th. Maximum wind chill around 22 at 9pm; West wind 6 to 9 mph. In 2019, we had light snow in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 14 degrees. The record low of -12 occurred back in 1878.

I really am enjoying the big tin of hot coca mix I got from the store. ☕ I wanted to have hot coca for my New Years Eve Camping Trip but I couldn’t find it at Price Chopper, not my normal store, and I was running late. It’s probably good, because those little packets of hot coca don’t always burn up completely when tossed in the fire with the thin layer of aluminum foil, and I was trying to camp in a “tread lightly” fashion, doing as little noticeable damage to the forest as possible. I’m not delusional enough to believe you can camp with zero impacts, but I like to keep my campsites as clean and tidy as possible, with anything that doesn’t full burn get packed out. 🌲 But at home, the big tin of hot coca is wonderful — especially in coffee or on a cold evening. I can always pack some in a ziplock bag for camping. Probably a lot cheaper that way too. I do wish the container it came in was recycable — but I can probably tear off the aluminum parts for recycling and burn the rest. ♻ I normally do not have snacks at home, 🍬 although maybe I’ll break that tradition as this week is $2.99 for all flavors at the Stewarts Ice Cream Special Week. Yum! 🍨 I already see myself falling off the wagon. Fortunately though, I don’t ever have alcohol at home for the most part.🍺

Another rainy but mild weekend on tap. ☔ Saturday, rain. High near 53. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Sunday, a chance of rain and snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 39. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Typical average high for the weekend is 30 degrees.

At least the rain will keep the salt off the roads. 💦I have a lot of things to do in town next weekend including starting working on the Reszin Adam’s video – and possibly heading over to John Wolcott house to work on better labels 🔖 for his files 📂.

🌹🌻🌼Only 73 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!🌹🌻🌼

I am thinking about doing a camping trip over Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend in two weekends, 🏕 but a lot depends on the winter. This time if I do Cole Hill State Forest, I’ll make sure to leave a note on my truck where I am in case anybody reports it parked overnight. 🅿 Although, honestly if there isn’t too much snow I would truly prefer to camp up Moscow Hill Area in Brookfield — I just like seeing that beautiful farm country, 🐄 plus it’s nice having those hardened campsites with the gravel and the pavilion. Ideally, if there is no or little snow, I could drive right back there.

As previously noted, next Monday is Make Your Dream Come True Day 🏡 when the sun will be setting at 4:44 pm with dusk at 5:15 pm. On that day in 2019, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 23 and 10 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 30 degrees. We hit a record high of 71 back in 1932.

North Adams and Hossack Range

December 18, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Save the Pine Bush Dinner Day! 😋 It should as always be a good dinner at the Westminster Presbyterian Church downtown at 6 PM. It’s also Bake Cookies Day 🍪! Cookies are good but I don’t believe in having them at home because they’re unhealthy and unnecessary expense. I do sometimes have them at camp or at parties, they’re great when they’re fresh out of a camp oven. Next Wednesday is Christmas 🎅. I do find that a bit hard to believe, but honestly I’m more excited about the following Saturday and heading out to the Finger Lakes to camp.🏕 Clear and sunny, bright around 27 degrees in Delmar, NY. 🌞 There is a west-southwest breeze at 6 mph. 🍃. There are 4 inches of fresh and very white snow on the ground. ☃ Made for a rather bright walk down to the express bus, almost wish I had sunglasses. 😎 Going to be a cold one the next few days — tThings will start to thaw out at Sunday around noontime but I’m hoping the sun and wind will help melt things away even when its below freezing. 🌡️

It was a bit of an icy walk down to the express bus 🚍 but I left in plenty of time to get there in time ⌚. The sidewalks weren’t bad but they were a bit slippery in parts. I ended up walking on the shoulder the last bit so I wasn’t slip sliding my way all the way down there, as I wouldn’t want to slip and walking in the snow is annoying. So bright though with the sun and gleaming sun — it seems dark in contrast on the bus.☀ While it’s going to be cold today, I’m hoping with the sun and the wind, and some salt the sidewalks will be good by tomorrow although it might be too cold to walk down to the express tomorrow. That said, they’re have been negative 15 days when I’ve walked down to the express bus int he past. Winter is here, for a little while, but I expect a warm up by next week with the latest forecast.♨

Today will have a chance of snow showers, mainly after noon. Some of the snow squalls could be heavy at times, leading to white out conditions and very dangerous travel conditions. Weatherman says check the radar before you get on the expressway. Clear going this morning into work, and hopefully it won’t impact my commute home after the Pine Bush Dinner. Mostly cloudy 🌦, with a high of 31 degrees at 12pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical Southwest wind 6 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 30 degrees. The record high of 60 was set in 1921. 17 inches of snow fell back in 1887.❄

The sun will set at 4:23 pm with dusk around 4:55 pm, which is 20 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, watch out for snow squalls  🌨 and falling temperatures around 27 degrees. The wind chill around sunset will be 15. ☃️ There will be a west-northwest breeze at 15 mph with gusts up to 25mph. Today will have 9 hours and 3 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 18 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of snow showers, mainly before 11pm. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 5 degrees at 5am. 15 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around -8 at 2am; Northwest wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chilly night ahead, I left the heat turned up a bit so it won’t be too cold. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 16 degrees. The record low of -13 occurred back in 1973.

Project SCORE, the world’s first communications satellite, is launched today in 1958. 📡 Still an important communication technology, although the lag between sending and receiving, and the limits on bandwidth mean that for most communications people use fiber optics these days. I guess some rural households use satellite dishes for television reception and internet, but from what I’ve heard it’s hardly ideal due to the long lags in the signal. 📶

It looks like the weekend has improved somewhat in recent forecasts, especially on the second half of the weekend. 🌤 Saturday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 28. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 37. Typical average high for the weekend is 34 degrees.

So as I noted last night, I’m planning on staying in town this weekend. I want to get that voltage switch set up, and I don’t know how busy I will be Saturday after the Pine Bush Hike 🚶🌲🌲🌳 for some filming for the Reszin Adams.📽 It’s going to still be fairly cold, and the following weekend looks increasingly nice, if it’s not too cloudy and muddy. Might actually have some rain a week from Friday, followed by several days above freezing, which could be problematic, in the sense that the woods might turn all to mud.

I think I will mount the voltage switch in the back next to the inverter and tap power off the the line that goes up to the USB charging ports I have back there, as I have both positive and negative there to tap into easily. 🔘 From there I will run the positive output of the voltage switch to a diode to protect the voltage switch from any induced current spikes when the relay closes. 🔄 While I’m not sure if this is totally necessary, a few years back I tried to build a relay position indicator with LEDs, and I kept blowing LEDs out when I would switch it on and off a few times due to current spikes (any magnet will create a reverse electrical spike when current is broken, e.g. inductance). 🧲From the diode, I’ll run an “exciter” line to the switch that currently turns on when the engine is on, and hook another diode between the engine input and output so I don’t back-feed current and accidentally turn on the CB radio and dash cam when the solar panel comes on.

Looking ahead, there are 3 weeks until Bubble Bath Day 🧼 when the sun will be setting at 4:38 pm with dusk at 5:10 pm. On that day in 2019, we had cloudy, mild, rain showers and temperatures between 41 and 29 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 30 degrees. We hit a record high of 60 back in 2008.

Northwood Club Road near Huntley Pond

December 14, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Saturday. Finally the weekend! Next Saturday is First Day of Winter ☃️. Pine Bush Hike next too, supposed to be a ski trip from Madison Avenue Extension 🎿but I got my doubts that we will have much snow left by then. Rain, drizzle and fog 🌁 and 39 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☔ There is a north-northwest breeze at 6 mph. 🍃. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 4 pm. ☃️

Not a real nice morning, it’s not only foggy outside but also in my head. 🌁 I woke up early again this morning and had trouble getting back to sleep until I wandered downstairs and took a pee. 🚽 Little achy in my knees too but maybe that because I’ve been spending do much time on the exercise bike. 🚲 Then I got looking at some numbers and stats in Excel and the DEC data. I do have some new data with the DEC latest dump to update a few maps but honestly my map collection 🗾is pretty complete on the blog.

Today will rain likely, mainly after 3pm. Cloudy 🌧, with a high of 46 degrees at 1pm. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 21st. Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph becoming calm in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. Going to be a real dreary day but hopefully that will eat away at the snow. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 45 degrees. The record high of 63 was set in 1901. 12.5 inches of snow fell back in 1956.❄

Today I am going to my parents house for their Christmas decorating party 🎄. Not going out tomorrow as I have the Save the Pine Bush benefit to go to tomorrow night. It’s kind of in the middle of the city which is annoying because there isn’t much bus service on Sunday night to take me there, so I’m going to have to drive there avoiding the red light camera intersections somehow. 🚦 I really hate driving in the city, my truck gets awful gas mileage on city streets and I might have to fuel ⛽ up tomorrow as I haven’t bought gas since the last time I was camping the week before Thanksgiving.

The sun will set at 4:22 pm with dusk around 4:54 pm, which is 12 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for rain 🌧 and temperatures around 42 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 9 hours and 4 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 34 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will rain likely, mainly before midnight. Cloudy 🌧, with a low of 36 degrees at 5am. 15 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 30th. Breezy, with a south wind 6 to 11 mph becoming west 18 to 23 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 34 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 32 degrees. The record low of -8 occurred back in 1874.

Probably won’t be walking tonight 🚶
but instead riding the exercise bike 🚲 and watching some YouTube videos. At least I won’t have to worry about slipping and falling on the bike compared to walking on icy sidewalks. Two nights ago there was a fair amount of black ice in parts.

Today in 1994, started construction begins on the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze river. ⛲ The Three Gorges Dam has been the world’s largest power station in terms of installed capacity (22,500 MW) since 2012. In 2014, the dam generated 98.8 terawatt-hours (TWh) and had the world record, but was surpassed by the Itaipú Dam, which set the new world record in 2016, producing 103.1 TWh.

Also, today was a notable date in civil rights history, with the release of the Heart of Atlanta Motel, Inc. v. United States, 379 U.S. 241 (1964), 💖a landmark United States Supreme Court case holding that the Commerce Clause gave the U.S. Congress power to force private businesses to abide by Title II of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination in public accommodations.🏰

One month 📅 from now will be Coldest Week of the Year 🌬 when the sun will be setting at 4:45 pm with dusk at 5:16 pm. The average high temperature is 30 degrees, with a record high of 61 in 1895. It’s already pretty cold ❄ in my book 📙 but it could be colder and will get colder. And I’m half seriously thinking about eventually living off-grid in the much colder Wisconsin, a bit in a world where the climate has warmed a fair amount more over the next ten to 15 years.

East Off Stony Ledge

April 28, 2019 Night

Good evening! Mostly clear and 44 degrees in Delmar. There is a west-northwest breeze at 9 mph. 🍃. I went for my evening walk, it was pretty cool.

After my evening walk I sat back and watched a movie or two, that I had downloaded from the YouTube. 🎥 I was was watching more of Shaun James My Self Reliance channel and then something about agriculture that I already forgot about.

In all the long weekend was a bust but I was glad to get away from the city for a bit to spend a few days in the Adirondacks. 🗻 The summer is not yet over, so there is still a chance for some adventures. This year I’m thinking of trying some different things and go new places as change prolongs time. Doing the same thing over and over again caches things ⌚ making things go by quickly. I’m not ready for Winter 2019-20 yet. ⏳ Summer should drag on for a bit.

Tonight will have areas of frost after 4am. Otherwise, mostly clear 🌃, with a low of 34 degrees at 6am. Eight degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical night around April 7th. Northwest wind 5 to 9 mph becoming light after midnight. In 2018, we had light rain. It got down to 38 degrees. The record low of 27 occurred back in 1947.

Tonight will have a Waning Crescent Moon 🌘 with 21% illuminated. The moon will rise at 3:49 am. The New Moon is on Friday night with showers is likely. The Flower Moon 🌝 is on Friday, May 17th. The sun will rise at 5:53 am with the first light at 5:22 am, which is one minute and 25 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌄 Tonight will have 9 hours and 59 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 32 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have areas of frost before 8am. Otherwise, increasing clouds after a sunny start to the day 🌞, with a high of 59 degrees at 5pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical day around April 17th. Light and variable wind. A year ago, we had partly cloudy in the morning, which became cloudy by afternoon. The high last year was 50 degrees. The record high of 88 was set in 1888. 1.0 inches of snow fell back in 1885.❄

Next weekend looks like it might be perfect weather-wise. 😎 Next Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 62. Maximum dew point of 42 at 6am. Next Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 64. Maximum dew point of 42 at 8pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 66 degrees. I’ll take it. We will see how it works out.

My aunt is coming up from Arizona, ✈ so I’m going to stick in town this weekend. It’s rather unfortunate we couldn’t have had this forecast the previous week. Maybe the following weekend I’ll head back to the wilderness. But before you know it, black fly season will be upon us.

I started looking at fixing up my bicycle 🚲. Bikes are really a fast and easy way to get around the city. Certainly much better than motoring. Buses are great but bikes go many places buses don’t go. The big thing I need for my bike is a new rear wheel with tougher spokes. Always seem to break spokes on it. I also need to fix some parts on the derailer too. I’m sure it can be done, I really need to get a good manual then get on ebay or Amazon for parts. Certainly having a good bike is key 🔑 if I’m thinking of going carless for a few years after I get rid of Big Red sometime in the early to mid 2020s. I’m really tired of fossil fuel motoring and all the fees and costs surrounding motoring. Not to mention the many worries. Bicycling would be so much better for my health and so many of my friends and colleagues now are going motor free.

In four weeks on May 26 the sun will be setting at 8:21 pm,🌄 which is 29 minutes and 19 seconds later then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had hot, mostly sunny, rain showers and temperatures between 89 and 60 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 72 and 50 degrees. The record high of 94 degrees was set back in 2010.

Looking ahead, Cinco de Mayo 🤠 is in 1 weeks, Mothers Day 👩‍ is in 2 weeks, Fathers Day 👨 is in 7 weeks, National Nude Day 👱 is in 11 weeks, Sunset Before 7:30 PM 🌆 is in 18 weeks, Autumn 🍂 is in 21 weeks and Average High is 60 🍂 is in 24 weeks.

March 4, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Average High is 40 ☀️! As we head into the spring 🌷things do warm up at an increasing rate, reaching an average high of 50 in only three and a half weeks. Four weeks to April Fools Day 🤡. That’s also the first of April and opening day for trout season 🎣in case your not aware. My fishing license expires on April 13th, I might try buying it online this year. It would be easier that way. State budget is also due then, jokes on y’all.

Mostly cloudy and 29 degrees in Delmar. ☁ There is a north-northwest breeze at 9 mph. 🍃. After last night’s mini snow storm there are 4 inches of snow on the ground. ☃ ️Things will start to thaw out at around 10 am. 🌡️ Not far above freezing but with the sun ☀and road salt things are already starting to melt a bit.

It snowed last night 🌃 but didn’t start until relatively late. ❄ I don’t care that much as it’s largely melted off the roads at this point. I skipped my evening walk because I figured I got an hour in on my exercise bike 🚲 and didn’t think it was necessary at this point. Plus I was tired 😴. Dimmed the lights retired to bed before ten.

When I first woke up, I turned the heat 🔥 up for a bit. No need for it heat by time the sun ☀ came up, as things warmed quickly. Expecting a mild day today although not super warm. The south facing windows in my office 🏢 will be nice though with the sun radiating in. Kind of pretty with the fresh snow everywhere, although I’m hoping it’s one of the last. Probably not a realistic hope.

Not happy 😊 I moved my truck to the grass 🌾, as I don’t think we will get much more snow this week but at least my parking spot will be cleared of snow. 🅿 I may want to move it this week so I don’t sink in the soft ground with the warmer March weather (HAH!) 😜although I did leave it locked 🔒 in 4×4 mode. I do need to get ketchup and dish soap, so maybe I will go out to the store this week and move the truck. Not sure though. Landlord did plow this morning, I was actually a bit surprised, as there isn’t that much snow. Maybe with the new tenants in the house up front, he’s trying to make a good impression.🕴

Today will be partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 33 degrees at 11am. Seven degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 10th. At some point the weather will change and it will feel more like May or June rather than February. Northwest wind 9 to 15 mph. A year ago, we had light snow. The high last year was 38 degrees. The record high of 59 was set in 1919. 8.3 inches of snow fell back in 1971.❄

In 1985, Food and Drug Administration approves a blood test for AIDS infection, used since then for screening all blood donations in the United States. 💉In 1917, Jeannette Rankin of Montana becomes the first female member of the United States House of Representatives.🙅 And in 1957, S&P 500 stock market index is introduced, replacing the S&P 90.📈

The sun will set at 5:49 pm with dusk around 6:17 pm, which is one minute and 13 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for partly clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 26 degrees. The wind chill around sunset will be 14. ☃️ There will be a west-northwest breeze at 15 mph. Today will have 11 hours and 24 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over yesterday.

Packed up a lunch and dinner 🍲 as I figured it’s going to be a long day at work, especially with conference after session. I expect to be at work probably until after sunset 🌇 but I’m fine with that, I think the bus will still be running 🏃 as I doubt I’ll be at work after 11:30, and quite possibly get home much earlier. ⌚

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌤, with a low of 9 degrees at 6am. 13 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around -2 at 6am; West wind 7 to 13 mph. In 2018, we had light snow in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 31 degrees. The record low of -12 occurred back in 1948.

Tomorrow will have a slight chance of snow showers after 3pm. Increasing clouds 🌞, with a high of 25 degrees at 2pm. 15 degrees below normal. West wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had light snow. The high last year was 38 degrees. The record high of 71 was set in 1964. 8.6 inches of snow fell back in 1917.❄

Yesterday, I hike the rail trail then went over John Wolcott’s house. 📜 Spent several hours sorting through files, trying to figure out what the old dutch and other documents were all about. I prefer to go over on the weekends, at least while I’m still in town, as it’s more productive to spend a few hours rather then just an hour or two, after work. I’ll have to see though once the nicer weather comes, maybe I can go after work with more sun in the afternoon. The rail trail was nice 🚂 although a bit icy in parts, certainly not snow free. Sat down by the Normans Kill Falls for a while, watching the river. Got a lot of steps in yesterday, for sure.

I put a set of ((parentheses)) around the end of the weekend by watching a video 📹 about the history of LISP. What an odd but useful old computer 💻 language for sure. Made the half hour on the exercise bike pass by quickly. ⏳I also watched more of the How Farms Work channel update video I downloaded. I figured I am burning calories, plus learning about a lot of things I don’t know that much.🚜The best part about pre-downloading the videos, is I don’t have to watch the commercials for all the commercial products, although I do try to go back to the channels that I like and click the like button, and sometimes run the ads in the background when I’m online so they get their credits and views.🚲

Reinforced the button ⭕ on my pants 👖. While that’s a good thing, as they were starting to get loose, it wasn’t the pair I intended to wear today. I wanted to fix it that pair, so it was reinforced. After spending so much time with the needle and thread, 🧵 it almost made me late to the bus.🚏 But I ended up making it time, so that’s what’s important. I also ordered some more dress pants and another blazer, so I should look sharp, despite the many session days.🕴I hate having to ration dress pants or wear the ones that don’t fit well. I like being as comfortable as possible at work. I probably should at some point get my jacket dry cleaned, maybe once I get my new one.

Finally took the trash out. 🗑 It realized it had been inside for a couple of weeks, and I was starting to realize it started to smelled a bit. As I don’t have trash pick up, have a container for the compost, buy in bulk, aggressively recycle and in the summer burn the burnables while camping, 🔥 I sometimes forget about taking out the trash while cleaning. It’s actually amazing how little trash I have — three or four weeks of trash easily fit in a single shopping bag. Recycling, especially with those milk bottles takes up a fair bit more space. I wish they had returnables still at Stewarts. At some point, I’ll want to go to the transfer station with the recycling but I usually like to put that off until the end of winter. Much easier in the summer months, when I’m camping and have a fire every day.♻ I do find myself always acquiring so many disposable shopping bags, I really should buy some reusable bags. But then again, that might be the law soon. it’s not such a big deal in the summer when I’m camping, as they get used up then, but it’s a annoying how fast they multiply around home in the winter and have to be taken back to the store.

Got the 5 volt ⚡ linear regulators I ordered from China in the mail ✉. I am planning to use these for powering the small electronic projects powered my truck, namely the smart-relay I am building and the GPS logger I built last year.🌐 I used the built-in regulator for an Arduino to power the first version of the GPS logger, but I ended up burning-out the voltage regulator due to the relatively high voltage the truck’s alternator puts out, and the current draw by the GPS and the SD card reader. A linear regulator isn’t ideal for minimizing current draw, but when the truck is running, it doesn’t really matter, as we are only talking a few dozen milliamps. I am still now waiting on the relays I bought from China to do the switching for the smart relay, but I will continue to test and build things on my breadboard.

Pay week this week, which is good, because money is always tight. 💰 My budget is always pretty small, although I try to save money wherever I can — but traveling and camping season is coming soon. Plus I owe the government a shit ton of money come tax day, and my ever escalating truck insurance bill is due the end of the month. It’s my fault, I decided to increase my insurance coverage to protect myself in case I were to get into serious crash, and burned some little child or hit the side of a house. I didn’t think that extra coverage was that much, but it’s kind of added up. I always try to be safe driver, but you never know what shit could happen on the road.🏞

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. 😕 Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 36. Sunday, a chance of rain and snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 39. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Typical average high for the weekend is 41 degrees. At least Saturday sounds nice but continued cold next weekend. ❄ Maybe the following week we will get seasonable temperatures? 🌸 I’m still hoping to get out for a late winter camping trip soon, but a lot depends on how busy I’m with work and everything else going on in my life. 🏕 Getting rid of the snow would help too. I don’t drink beer (much) anymore, but I certainly wouldn’t mind a cold one in the wilderness.🍺

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until April Fools Day 🤡 and the start of Trout Fishing 🎣when the sun will be setting at 7:21 pm with dusk at 7:50 pm (Daylight Savings Time). On that day in 2018, we had partly sunny, rain showers and temperatures between 47 and 27 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 52 degrees. We hit a record high of 77 back in 1986.

Looking ahead, April Fools Day 🤡 is in 4 weeks, Tax Day 💰 is in 6 weeks, Earth Day 🌎 is in 7 weeks, 8 PM Sunset 🌇 is in 2 months, Memorial Day 🇺🇸 is in 12 weeks, July 🏊🏿 is in 17 weeks, Independence Day 🇺🇸 is in 4 months and Last Sunset After 8 PM 🌆 is in 23 weeks.
