December 18, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Save the Pine Bush Dinner Day! πŸ˜‹ It should as always be a good dinner at the Westminster Presbyterian Church downtown at 6 PM. It’s also Bake Cookies Day πŸͺ! Cookies are good but I don’t believe in having them at home because they’re unhealthy and unnecessary expense. I do sometimes have them at camp or at parties, they’re great when they’re fresh out of a camp oven. Next Wednesday is Christmas πŸŽ…. I do find that a bit hard to believe, but honestly I’m more excited about the following Saturday and heading out to the Finger Lakes to camp.πŸ• Clear and sunny, bright around 27 degrees in Delmar, NY. 🌞 There is a west-southwest breeze at 6 mph. πŸƒ. There are 4 inches of fresh and very white snow on the ground. β˜ƒ Made for a rather bright walk down to the express bus, almost wish I had sunglasses. 😎 Going to be a cold one the next few days — tThings will start to thaw out at Sunday around noontime but I’m hoping the sun and wind will help melt things away even when its below freezing. 🌑️

It was a bit of an icy walk down to the express bus 🚍 but I left in plenty of time to get there in time ⌚. The sidewalks weren’t bad but they were a bit slippery in parts. I ended up walking on the shoulder the last bit so I wasn’t slip sliding my way all the way down there, as I wouldn’t want to slip and walking in the snow is annoying. So bright though with the sun and gleaming sun — it seems dark in contrast on the bus.β˜€ While it’s going to be cold today, I’m hoping with the sun and the wind, and some salt the sidewalks will be good by tomorrow although it might be too cold to walk down to the express tomorrow. That said, they’re have been negative 15 days when I’ve walked down to the express bus int he past. Winter is here, for a little while, but I expect a warm up by next week with the latest forecast.♨

Today will have a chance of snow showers, mainly after noon. Some of the snow squalls could be heavy at times, leading to white out conditions and very dangerous travel conditions. Weatherman says check the radar before you get on the expressway. Clear going this morning into work, and hopefully it won’t impact my commute home after the Pine Bush Dinner. Mostly cloudy 🌦, with a high of 31 degrees at 12pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical Southwest wind 6 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 30 degrees. The record high of 60 was set in 1921. 17 inches of snow fell back in 1887.❄

The sun will set at 4:23 pm with dusk around 4:55 pm, which is 20 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At sunset, watch out for snow squallsΒ  🌨 and falling temperatures around 27 degrees. The wind chill around sunset will be 15. β˜ƒοΈ There will be a west-northwest breeze at 15 mph with gusts up to 25mph. Today will have 9 hours and 3 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 18 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of snow showers, mainly before 11pm. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 5 degrees at 5am. 15 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around -8 at 2am; Northwest wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chilly night ahead, I left the heat turned up a bit so it won’t be too cold. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 16 degrees. The record low of -13 occurred back in 1973.

Project SCORE, the world’s first communications satellite, is launched today in 1958. πŸ“‘ Still an important communication technology, although the lag between sending and receiving, and the limits on bandwidth mean that for most communications people use fiber optics these days. I guess some rural households use satellite dishes for television reception and internet, but from what I’ve heard it’s hardly ideal due to the long lags in the signal. πŸ“Ά

It looks like the weekend has improved somewhat in recent forecasts, especially on the second half of the weekend. 🌀 Saturday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 28. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 37. Typical average high for the weekend is 34 degrees.

So as I noted last night, I’m planning on staying in town this weekend. I want to get that voltage switch set up, and I don’t know how busy I will be Saturday after the Pine Bush Hike 🚢🌲🌲🌳 for some filming for the Reszin Adams.πŸ“½ It’s going to still be fairly cold, and the following weekend looks increasingly nice, if it’s not too cloudy and muddy. Might actually have some rain a week from Friday, followed by several days above freezing, which could be problematic, in the sense that the woods might turn all to mud.

I think I will mount the voltage switch in the back next to the inverter and tap power off the the line that goes up to the USB charging ports I have back there, as I have both positive and negative there to tap into easily. πŸ”˜ From there I will run the positive output of the voltage switch to a diode to protect the voltage switch from any induced current spikes when the relay closes. πŸ”„ While I’m not sure if this is totally necessary, a few years back I tried to build a relay position indicator with LEDs, and I kept blowing LEDs out when I would switch it on and off a few times due to current spikes (any magnet will create a reverse electrical spike when current is broken, e.g. inductance). 🧲From the diode, I’ll run an “exciter” line to the switch that currently turns on when the engine is on, and hook another diode between the engine input and output so I don’t back-feed current and accidentally turn on the CB radio and dash cam when the solar panel comes on.

Looking ahead, there are 3 weeks until Bubble Bath Day 🧼 when the sun will be setting at 4:38 pm with dusk at 5:10 pm. On that day in 2019, we had cloudy, mild, rain showers and temperatures between 41 and 29 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 30 degrees. We hit a record high of 60 back in 2008.

Northwood Club Road near Huntley Pond

January 30, 2019 Morning

Good morning! What day is it? A sunny and fresh snow on a Hump Day, of course. Six weeks to 7 PM Sunset πŸŒ†. Partly sunny and 16 degrees in Delmar. Calm wind. Doesn’t feel that cold out with the sun plus I left the heat turned up in my apartment in preparation for the couple of days of cold weather to come. After last night’s snow storm are 9 inches of snow on the ground. β˜ƒΒ Things will start to thaw out at Sunday around 11 am. 🌑️ Going to be really nice then.

I took the local bus to work this morning 🚌 as I slept in a bit later than normal because I did not sleep well. 😩As expected, yesterday was an awful day at work but I made it through it. Roads are pretty good this morning and the bus is running relatively close to on schedule though. I’ll make it through today with toothpicks holding my eyes open and move forward to tomorrow. At least there should be a lot of sun and blue light in my office, for the first part of the day.

Today will have increasing clouds 🌞➑☁, with a high of 22 degrees at 1pm. Nine degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around -9 at 6pm; Breezy, with a light west wind increasing to 18 to 23 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 36 mph. Watch for snow showers between 3pm and 5pm. The snow could be heavy at times. Areas of blowing snow after noon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than one inch possible but still could impact our evening commutes. A year ago, we had light snow. The high last year was 28 degrees. The record high of 56 was set in 2013. 11.0 inches of snow fell back in 1966.❄

The sun will set at 5:06 pm with dusk around 5:36 pm, which is one minute and 19 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies ☁ and temperatures around 12 degrees. The wind chill around sunset will be -7. β˜ƒοΈ Breezy, 21 mph breeze β›… from the west with gusts up to 34mph. Yuck. Today will have 9 hours and 56 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 19 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear πŸŒƒ, with a low of -5 degrees at 5am. 20 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around -16 at 11pm; West wind 7 to 15 mph. I’ll definitely have to leave the cabinets open and the heat up tonight if I want a warm shower come the morning. 🚿 In 2018, we had light snow in the evening, which became mostly sunny by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 15 degrees. The record low of -26 occurred back in 1948.

Tomorrow will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 12 degrees at 1pm. 20 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around -15 at 6am; West wind 7 to 14 mph. A year ago, we had light snow. The high last year was 30 degrees. The record high of 58 was set in 1913. 6.9 inches of snow fell back in 2000.❄

Yesterday was a tough and crazy day at work. I got 53 work emails in one day, responding back to 33 of them.πŸ“¨ I had to run over to the Capitol a few times, write many memos and postage requisitions. Some days at work are less pleasant than others. Hopefully I’ll get caught up on work sooner than later. Maybe I should have stayed late last night, but I was so tired after the insanity around the place yesterday.πŸ€ͺ

Despite the crazy day at work, I left at 5:10 andΒ gotΒ home a little before six which wasn’t so bad with the snow. The bus was running a little bit late but I still got home earlier than I expected.😁 Normally, it’s closer to 5:40 – 5:45 PM with regular traffic.Β And despite the snow last night, this mornings commute wasn’t too bad at all, as the roads were pretty good.

My birthday dinner was fish sticks and corn. 🐟 I even cracked open a beer. I could have gone out but I was really tired. I’m not complaining, I got the super-sized bag a few weeks ago do its very economical. This morning I had waffles. Cleaned the counter up well but I still have a problem with ants. I got to get some ant bait, probably tomorrow when I go out to John Wolcott’s house. I hope I can get Big Red out of park in the cold. I think the next time I have Big Red in the shop for his oil change that I no longer do myself I will see if they can replace it at least get working the sensor again.πŸ…ΏΒ It’s fine when it’s a bit warmer, so I don’t know.

I mounted the old hard drive in the DVD slot on my laptop. πŸ’Ύ Worked great although I think I might have gave cracked some of the bezel clips when I removed the bezel from the DVD drive. I know they do sell them on eBay for not that much money so if I decide to get one — I’ve seen them listed for as low as $5 including shipping. I don’t necessary need a new one, just one without broken clips to replace the broken one, and also one to put on the DVD drive for when I swap them — although I can’t remember the last time I actually used the DVD drive.πŸ’Ώ

I had a nice evening walk, lots of snow outside for sure.Β I was really surprised how much snow was on the ground when I went for my evening walk last night around 8:30 PM, ❄ almost 6 inches at that point. Didn’t get much more snow though late into the night, maybe a another two inches. It was deep walking through the snow, especially the sections of the sidewalk out past Adams Station Apartment Complex later in the night.Β πŸ‘’

Looking ahead, there are 6 weeks until 7 PM Sunset πŸŒ† when the sun will be setting at 6:59 pm with dusk at 7:27 pm (Daylight Savings Time). On that day in 2018, we had snow and temperatures between 34 and 30 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 43 degrees. We hit a record high of 70 back in 2012.

Lots of sun this weekend, and actually relatively nice and warm on Sunday for a change. 😎 Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 27. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 37. Typical average high for the weekend is 32 degrees. I want to get some glue so I can fix my ski boots and skis again before heading out on Sunday to maybe do some cross country skiing, maybe in the backcountry of Partridge Run. β›·Should be a great time skiing, assuming the snow isn’t too sloppy with the warmer weather although in the hill-towns I can’t imagine it will be that high above freezing.

In four weeks on February 27 the sun will be setting at 5:42 pm,πŸŒ„ which is 36 minutes and 12 seconds later then today. The later sunset will be nice, especially as dusk is much later. In 2018 on that day, we had sunny and mild day with temperatures between 56 and 28 degrees.Β  An early taste of spring. I do remember that last year, I walked outside to the Capitol. Typically, you have temperatures between 38 and 20 degrees. The record high of 61 degrees was set back in 1997.

Looking ahead, 7 PM Sunset πŸŒ† is in 6 weeks, May πŸ•Š is in 13 weeks, 8:30 PM Sunset ⛱️ is in 18 weeks and Inauguration Day 2021 πŸ‘΄πŸ» is in 103 weeks. I am almost looking forward to the black flies at this point.

Setting Sun

October 4, 2015 evening

Good Evening on this Sunday Evening. I hope you weekend went smoothly and you had a relaxed weekend. The stars are beautiful tonight. It is currently 44 degrees and clear this evening. Feels a bit warmer than that without the breeze. Inside it’s not bad at 70 degrees – I don’t expect to turn on the heat before the nights drop below 25 degrees. Certainly today turned out to be the better weather-wise then was estimated earlier in the weekend. Tonight will have a low around 40 degrees with higher elevations getting the first hard frost of the year. The warm days of a few weeks ago seem to be far behind us.

I do like the smell of wood-smoke that your starting to smell in small towns around now that the temperature has dropped. Wood-smoke seems to scream fall, and represents cooler weather, with kind of a throwback to an earlier era in quaint New England and Upstate NY. I grew up in the country, and I know that wood-smoke isn’t just quaint and nice smelling, but a necessity to stay warm and the product of a lot of hard work cutting trees and splitting wood. But in the sense that Thanksgiving and fall colors are nice, wood-smoke is kind of nice. The heck with it being a pollutant in some urban areas and valleys.

That said, we aren’t looking at a really frigid week this week. Lots of sun for most of the week, with seasonable conditions. Mid-60s all week and a chance to possibly hit 70 later in the week. Not too bad for the first week of October in Albany. The cooler conditions might mean we actually see some good colors in the higher elevations by next week. It’s weird this year, it seems like some of the lower elevations and some just random colder or more shaded places are getting color a lot earlier then other places. I still can’t get over how little color there was at Moose River Plains two weeks ago – this is until I got home and pulled up the red channel in the GIMP imaging program.

Today I decided to go up to Mount Greylock in Massachussets. Gas is cheap. I thought about going to either Partridge Run or Beebe Hill State Forests for a walk with my shotgun, and see if I could drop some squirrels. But I decided against it, as I didn’t want to bug the bow hunters out there, and decided to go to Mount Greylock instead. I have to admit though, I didn’t hike all the way up the mountain, preferring to park at the last free lot as you head up the mountain and taking the 4/10th of a mile hike to the top. Still climbing over those rocks with my ankle was a bit painful from time to time. I’m fine walking on flat surfaces, but I still don’t have all my ankle strength back for climbing over rocks. Mount Greylock was nice, and seeing the hang gliders up there was pretty neat. That said, it was pretty crowded at the summit with a chilly breeze. The colors weren’t all the great, with greens prevailing along most of the mountains around Adams, Mass.

Later on I decided to hike to Stony Ledge. That hike was a mile and a half from the parking area, but it was it was a nice hike on a gravel roads. Colors were pretty tame with lots of green remaining at Stony Ledge, but it still was a nice a hike. Still, I hadn’t been at the Stony Ledge since December 2010, so it was nice to get back up there, and see the views in more seasonable conditions. Being that the entire hike here was a gravel road, my ankle didn’t give me any trouble whatsoever. A lot of people up there too, so it wasn’t really a quiet sitting on the ledge.

Today I didn’t get my tires rotated or truck inspected because the local lube joint said they couldn’t fit a truck as high as mine with the cap and lift kit in their garage. My truck is only about 7’8” and was about 7’ with the cap before the lift kit was put on, with the stock height at 6’4” but I guess the quick lube places have low clearance. I was a bit annoyed, because I really wanted to get the truck inspected and tires rotated today. I’m overdue with the tire rotation and I would like to maximize the life on the tires on my truck, because those 35-inch tires aren’t cheap. That said, I like my big jacked up truck, especially on long cruises in the country. Going to rotate the matching spare on it because that will give me a little more life in case one tire starts to wearing out early, and I won’t be putting a full-tread depth tire on while other ones are worn. For safety reasons, it’s actually good to use and replace the spare when the tires all wear out, as tire rubber ages just sitting around. I once put a brand new spare against a worn tire on an axle, and it proved to not ride very good, which is why I want to keep all the tires with about the same tread-ware.

I will call around tomorrow, I’m hoping one of the local garages can just rotate the tires and do the inspection on Tuesday or Wednesday morning. I definitely want to get it done before I go my trip next weekend. I have the spare tire off and in the bed of my truck, the hub caps off, and I tested all the lights on my truck, so I know it should pass and not take a long time once I find a shop that can handle my big truck. I know Watkins Spring in Albany can do it – as they did the alignment, but I’d rather go somewheres locally like Gochee’s in Delmar or maybe Town Line Auto in Greenville, as I’m driving out and staying at my parents house to do chores while they are on vacation.

Saturday I wired up two new lights under the truck cap, little blue spot lights that add a little more light under the cap near the shelf. I decided not to project them on the gun rack, but pointing up from the shelf to kick more light on the ceiling, which provides enough light to see around the truck cap and gives a little ambiance without consuming more then a half an amp or so. Combined with the light bar under the gun rack, set to a different color, they look pretty darn cool. I got a new switch block to replace the big bulky switch I had for the overhead LED lighting in the cab with a small, sleek power bus with built-in switches for controlling all the different lights from location. That said, the LED light bars have a separate switch to turn them on and select their color – they default to be switched off about 30 seconds after you disconnect them from power via the power bus switches.

I also got the spare tire off which proved to be a process because like usual I forgot how the spare tire hoist thing works. Once I got the manual off it wasn’t a big deal. I also took the hub caps off, because I figured it would be one less thing for the shop to have to do and mess up. I also feared something might get broken in their rush. The caps weren’t difficult to take off, but they did require four bolts each to remove, and some of those bolts required the assistance of the jack handle to get enough force to get them freed up. Those Rockstar wheels look weird without the hub caps, but I will put them back on once I get the tires rotated.

Continuing to get things packed and are working on a packing list for things I need to bring. I usually don’t make a packing list, but I didn’t want to forget things. So many things on the list – I’m over 50 items already. I mostly cleaned out the truck this weekend, at least the cab which was getting a mess with random reading materials, tools, fishing gear, and other stuff kind of just getting piled up in the cab. I also smelled something rotting back there, so I was kind of interested in getting things cleaned up so I could find it. Cleaned out a lot leaves and stuff from truck. Cleaned up the kitchen and bathroom a bit so when I return my apartment won’t be that icky.

I decided to go on a little road trip

I really haven’t gotten much out of the Capital Region in recent months bar the December trip to Kingston and Mount Tremper, along with the January 1st trip to North-South Lake, and my mini-trip to Schoharie County. It was cold out and I really wanted to get out, and not spend another boring Saturday night at home. Gas is cheap, figured I’d take a trip before it gets really expensive again.

I decided to take US 20 out to Pittsfield MA and then head east on MA 9 towards Northampton. Never been over that road, and I knew once I got out of Pittsfield I would loose the traffic and it would be quite scenic.

Rural Massachusetts state roads kind of sucks. They are narrow, windy, and steep. But the scenery is well worth it, especially MA 9 as it winds through various mountains and state forests. I kind of wanted to see the Pioneer Valley as it had been years since I had been out that way.

I forgot how built up the Pioneer Valley really is. I thought I’d be out in the sticks in farm country for most of the trip but Northampton and towns North of it in the Pioneer Valley are fairly populous suburbs of the Springfield MA metropolitan area.

It’s not to say there aren’t farms in the Pioneer Valley, it’s just there more smaller crop farms that were formerly tobacco farms. Still many of the tobacco drying barns still exist – they’re pretty neat, large barns. But I was envisioning Preble NY with it’s large dairies, not a lot of sprawl and only a little open land.

Got on MA 116 heading towards Ashland and Conway. What a pokey little road, that literally is an unimproved except for blacktop road. They certainly didn’t remove any curves from it. The gorges and streams it followed were beautiful, wild country but like most of New England, there were plenty of uppity little but bustling villages. Outside of the villages there really was nothing.

I think in the whole time I was in Massachusetts, I saw one operating dairy farm and maybe one other farm that had a few beef cows. Just not a lot of agriculture going on in Western Massachusetts. I guess the soil is too poor to grow field crops like New York.

Western Mass also seemed a lot more populous, although the population was a lot more concentrated than upstate, at least away from the Erie Canal and Hudson River.

It started to get dark as I reached Buckland, which is as podunky as it sounds. Which sucked, as I ended up driving the Mohawk Trail from the Pioneer Valley outskirts to North Adams, which is basically a blacktop trail through the mountains. The headlights worked fine except they were a bit dim but still blinded folks. Silly headlights on my lifted truck.

The Hairpin Overlook was pretty after dark. As was the Taconic Trail Overlook, although the snow was deep when I went for a short hike up there. Couldn’t see the Empire Plaza buildings from there, but it was pretty.

A long trip but pretty. I like getting out and seeing new places in the wild country – the shacks, the mountains, the farms, and everything else not so perfectly dominated by man.

Pine Cobble

Two weekends ago, I went for a hike up Pine Cobble outside Williamstown, MA. This is the first time I’ve really been hiking in the Berkshires, formally, and not just on the New York-Massachusetts line on the Taconic Crest Trail. That said, the Taconic Crest trails runs on such a high ridge compared to the rest of the Taconics, and is closer to the height of the Berkshires, that it is probably in the Berkshires and not the Taconics, regardless of where the state line may rest.

The Pine Cobble starts off a steep road that has the Pine Cobble private development on it. It’s not a gated community, but as close as one can get to it. The parking is limited here, with a lot for seven cars, so if it’s full, as it was on this beautiful Sunday morning on labor day, you will be forced to park on the shoulder.

There is a six-inch asphalt curb you have to jump to get on the grass sholder, but if you have a truck, it shouldn’t be a problem. They didn’t give me a ticket, and lots other did it, so I guess it’s legal. They do have a sign, just past the parking lot, as you go into the development, that says NO PARKING on ROADWAY and it’s posted, but downhill from the lot, seems okay.

Limited Parking

The trail head is very well signed. The entire trail is well worn, and the occassional Williamstown Trail Blazes makes it easy to follow the trail.

Pine Cobble Trail Entrance

Parts of the trail are either relatively smooth or steep and rocky. It’s called Pine Cobble, so you would expect to be walking on a lot of rock cobble. It’s not nice small stuff, but big enough that you have to keep a careful eye on where you step.

Rough on the Feet

Three quarters of the way to the top there is this oak tree with three shoots up that provides a perfect little pool where water accumulates throughout the year. It’s quite neat looking. Talking to other people, this is actually quite a common occurance with a certain type of oak.

East Mountain

You’ve almost made it to the top of Pine Cobble. Once you’ve checked it, make sure to take the trail up East Mountain for a 1/2 mile to get some awesome westerly views.

Trail Up East Mountain

Here is the summit of Pine Cobble. It’s not the most impressive summit, and indeed the best views are along the edges of Pine Cobble, where there are several to be enjoyed.

Summit

Looking down at North Adams from Pine Cobble. The city’s high rises are surrounded by the mountains that form Hoosic Valley where the river runs north through Williamstown, Pownal, Vermont, and ultimately Rensselear County, New York into the Hudson.

North Adams

Here is the Pownal Valley, where the Hoosic River heads up through the corner of Vermont and back into New York State.

Pownal Valley

West from Pine Cobble, you can see the last range of the Taconics / first of Berkshires, where Berlin Mountain and Mount Raimer. Also in the foreground is a little bit of Williamstown.

West

On East Mountain there are these exciting views of that same range, but with the addition of lots of bright white marble rock, cairns, and at least on this blue day, a deep blue sky.

Exciting Views

When you reach the top of East Mountain, there is sections of the Appalachian Trail that remind me a lot of the look of Albany Pine Bush, minus the sandy soils. The Berlin Mountain range in the distance pull some kind of emotion into my heart, just like looking at the Heldebergs from the Albany Pine Bush.
