Rain Lets Up

Happy Juneteenth ๐Ÿ–๏ธ

Happy Juneteenth! What a beautiful morning I would seem. After a cool and at sometimes rainy weekend, the best day is the day I have to go home. That said I’m in no rush to make that happen, I plan to leave to head home at five o’clock or when the clouds and rain come โ›ˆ๏ธ whichever comes first. A little hammock time for me, watching the butterflies ๐Ÿฆ‹ and flags ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ flutter in the wind. A lazy day for me ๐Ÿ˜ด recognizing that the time is short for this trip so I need to maximize my time hear before I return to civilization.

Started out my morning with oatmeal banana ๐ŸŒ pancakes ๐Ÿฅž using up the remaining blackberries, blueberries and strawberries I had. Started out the morning floating on the tube โญ• and then slowly have been taking down camp โ›บ. I know I just moved the campsite last night. Got up at seven which is very late for me, but I was up until 11 pm last night.

Truth is this time of year, 11 o’clock isn’t really late when out camping ๐ŸŒƒ especially in the open canopy like Powley Place where it doesn’t get real dark until after 10 pm. With the lights, the campfire and shooting fireworks ๐ŸŽ‡ off the rail of the bridge, eleven o’clock came quickly. I probably could have done midnight but I didn’t want to sleep all of today.

Hiked back to Goldmine Stream Falls yesterday. ๐Ÿšถ Nice walk from the bridge site along more of Powley Road. Between yesterday and Saturday I pretty much walked half of Powley Road over the weekend. Also hiked beyond the falls a ways until I reached the clearing where you get a good of Big Alderbed Mountain โ›ฐ in the distance. In the evening floated on the East Canada Creek under Powley Bridge for 45 minutes then paddled for about an hour down to the second beaver dam south of the bridge.

Today I am going to paddle ๐Ÿ›ถ along the East Canada Creek, same route as yesterday then do a little more floating in the tube โญ• on the East Canada Creek ๐ŸŠ and end my day at the Potholers. Leave at five, weather depending, get home at seven 7โƒฃ and unpack then go for the evening walk ๐Ÿšถ. Did little bit of walking around Powley Place this morning and back along the trail at Campsite 7 to the East Branch so my hope is by afternoon to be two thirds done with the step goal ๐Ÿฅ… of five miles and be at least at six ny the end of the day. I will need groceries but will make due with what I have for Tuesday and hope not too late of a night at work for shopping ๐Ÿ›’ that evening. My pantry is pretty bare and I used up most of my camp food ๐Ÿฒ but I have rice, lentils and beans and will try to save an apple ๐Ÿ or something to get through the day tomorrow. I guess I could stop somewhere on my way home ๐Ÿก.

33 Nights I Camped in 2022

This was a tough year for getting out of town. My truck was getting creaking and old, rusted and always in risk of breaking down, though the only failure I had on vacation and that was a stupid loose lug-nut. But with high gas prices, inflation, and my desire to invest more in the markets, kept me home more then most other recent years. I also focused on destinations where I could camp for multiple nights, after parking my truck and leaving the engine off to save fuel. Many of the prime weekends of the year were raining.

Ultimately I camped 33 nights, which is about normal for me, though the trips were longer and closer to home.

My first camping trip of the year started out in February during President’s Day Weekend, February 20-22 at Rensselaerville State Forest. Winter camping and skiing, took a walk down to the explore the new OSI Parcel that will eventually be added to the state forest.

Campsite 2

Second trip of the year was up to the East Branch Sacandaga River, April 22-24, which is always my big April trip complete with a big bonfire, hiking along the East Branch and back to the Gorge Falls.

East Branch Sacandaga River

Third trip of the year was to Piseco-Powley Road’s House Pond Campsite, three nights, June 17-19, including exploring this previously unknown to me swimming hole. Had another big fire, spent a lot of time at the swimming hole across the way. Also visited the potholers a couple of times in the evening.

Swimming Hole Off Old Edick Road

Then from June 19-21, I moved up the road to Powley Place Campsite 9 for two nights. Hiked back to Goldmine Stream Falls and then on Tuesday hiked back to Big Alderbed.

Powley Campsite 10

The forth trip of the year was July 16-19th which I camped up Campsite 5 on Piseco-Powley Road, about a mile north of the Potholers. I don’t love this campsite, as much as House Pond but it was still within walking distance from the Potholers, and is remote enough that I can listen to music as loud as I want, have big fires and shoot guns.

Campfire

Fifth trip of the year was the Finger Lakes National Forest, camping off old Chicken Co-Op Road from July 30 to August 8, as my GPS likes to call it. Stayed at the same campsite all week, alternating between trips away from camp and staying in camp, mostly to save fuel and reduce costs. Brought my kayak, paddled Cayuta Lake. Spent a lot of time at Watkins Glen State Park. Had that loose lug nut on my truck.

Finger Lakes Sunset

Sixth trip of the year was to the Adirondacks, Labor Day Weekend and the Friday before, September 2-5th, namely that campsite in Perkins Clearing on Hardwood Hill up above Spectulator where I have excellent cell reception and can work remote. It was kind of a lazy trip with lots of clams, sweet corn and beer, though that Friday I worked remote and was busy with work, and then did day hikes from camp, specifically exploring Mud Lake Road, where I ran into a family of bears. It poured on Labor Day when I took down camp.

Morning view

Seventh trip was a mid September remote-working trip up to Rensselearville State Forest, one of a series of three autumn trips up to the state forest only about 40 minutes from home. I chose to go there as I knew I could get home quickly if necessary with work being so busy, plus knowing I could get home if there was something I couldn’t do with my data plan on my cellphone. I think the dates were that Friday when I remote worked — September 16-19th.

Catskill Mountains

My eight trip was Columbus Day Weekend, Friday October 7 to Monday the 10th. I had originally planned to head up to the Adirondacks, but on my way up north, around Glenville I noticed my truck was swaying more then I would like around the corners, despite just recently being checked out at the shop. Plus heading up to the Adirondacks meant I would have dead spots, which was bad when I was supposed to be remote working, supervising three major political campaigns across the state. So I turned around and headed up to the Heldebergs. Ended up going to Rensselaerville State Forest again, for a colorful trip, especially when I hiked along Cheese Hill Road to the new OSI Parcel overlooking the Catskill Mountains and rural lands of Schoharie County and Potter Hollow. I probably should have brought my gun and got my hunting license, but I was constantly on the phone dealing with one crisis or another for work. Also spent Columbus Day hiking around Huyck Preserve for the bulk of the day before heading home, showering and going out to visit the folks.

Cheese Hill Road

My ninth trip of the year was back to Rensselaerville State Forest. This trip was planned to be there, the last week of Friday to Sunday, October 28-30th, while working heavily remote as the political campaigns I was managing was in their last stretch. It was kind of a chilly weekend and busy with work. But I had my heater, and I did find time to get out and walk, as the colors faded away. It was a nice weekend but it reminded me that autumn was certainly on the way.

Taconics

The tenth trip of the year was back to the East Branch Sacandaga River. Hike back along the Stewart Creek Trail and camped for two fairly cold nights from Thursday December 8 – Saturday December 10th. Came back a day early as I wanted to check to see if I had jury duty. It wasn’t a bad weekend but everything was first cold from the previous day rain, and then everything was icy once things froze up. But I stayed warm by the campsite.

Back camping at the same site tonight

The eleventh and final trip of the year was to Rensselaerville State Forest, right where I started the year close to home. The snow was deep this time, some 2 feet deep with an even deeper snow bank to dig through. But I hot tented there for two nights, from Tuesday December 20-Thursday December 22. This was the only trip of the year when I didn’t camp in my truck.

Winter camping ?

Conclusions

I wouldn’t rank this as my greatest year ever, with the most adventures. But I made the best of the situation with inflation increasing the price of camping supplies and fuel for my big jacked up truck, which became more unreliable. Work was super busy with all those campaigns. The weather was often bad for the prime weekends of the year. But I made the best of the year.

Daily Update – June 21, 2022

Good evening! Back home, Happy Summer. ๐Ÿ–

Actually, I guess summer started at 5:17 AM this morning, though I was fast asleep in the back of my pickup, after staying up late last night looking at the stars at Powley Place. Been unusually cold weekend, but it was nice to get away for five days, and not have any social media or emails to look at in the mean time.

Rain and 67 degrees in Delmar. โ˜ There is a southeast breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 54 degrees. 0.22 inches of rain is expected before it ends around 9 pm.

I decided not to leave for the Adirondacks until Friday morning. ๐ŸŒ… I left before 7:30 and took the Thruway to Schenectady, got gas there and supplies and groceries at the Walmart in Gloversville.

Explored Willie Marsh around 9:30 am, only some geese ๐Ÿฆ† and swallow tail butterflies ๐Ÿฆ‹ there. First time there, I wasn’t that impressed didn’t stay long. Nice bridges and handicap access but it’s a pretty generic marsh.

Got to camp around 11. โ›บ Got the campsite I like at the trailhead to House Pond across from the swimming hole and a relatively short hike to the Potholers.

Swam and did a floating on the tube โญ• and drinking ๐Ÿป beer and eating Giraldi sausage patties with mozzarella. ๐Ÿ” They’re so good even with inflation raising their prices.

Had a real big fire, ๐Ÿ”ฅ with six or seven foot flames for a while. Looked like a bonfire although maybe it was more like a bonfire with eight weeks of burnables going up in smoke and a strong breeze to feed the fire and blow what was probably somewhat black smoke after dark into the wilderness.

Saturday was incredibly cold ๐ŸŒง๏ธ with drizzle and rain a good portion of the day. I hiked down to another waterfall and swimming ๐ŸŠ hole I had heard rumored about but never explored before. l also hiked back to the Potholers. Didn’t swim, for a while I was so chilled through I found myself sitting by the propane heater โ™จ to stay warm.

Sunday also was cold with a gusty breeze most of the day and temperatures in 50s and low 60s. ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ Enough sun โ˜€ I did some floating on the the tube but it was cold enough that out of the water ๐Ÿ’ฆ and put my hoodie back on and sat by the heater. โ™จ Hiked again to the Potholers.

Read ๐Ÿ“– four books. Making up for lost time on my summer reading program. The first one was a book on Statistics for Dummies. Second one was Nate Silver’s Signal and the Noise. Third was Algorithms in a nutshell, fourth was Triggers : creating behavior that lasts–becoming the person you want to be and then finally I got a good way through Steven Rinella’s Meat eater : adventures from the life of an American hunter.

Monday I took down my campsite at House Pond Trailhead and spent the balance of the morning at the Potholers ๐ŸŠ‍โ™‚๏ธ spending a lot of the morning in the sun โ˜€ reading ๐Ÿ“– and floating in the tube. โญ• I went in the Potholers a bit but it was cold. Set up camp โ›บ at Powley Place 10, had another sausage paddy and hiked back to Goldmine Stream Falls.

Got back to camp around six, had some dinner and beer ๐Ÿป ๐Ÿ” then went tubing on the East Canada Creek until around 8:15. Paddled between the navigable section beaver dam ๐Ÿป to the first beaver dam downstream of the bridge. Probably a mile or two. While the tube isn’t as fast as the kayak ๐Ÿ›ถ it certainly can be used for leisurely navigation and is much lighter and easier to pack then the kayak.

I wasn’t going to have a fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ until I decided to have a small one, and stayed up to around eleven to look at the stars โœจ. Some haze and clouds in the evening but still very starry and pretty walking along that sandy road in the remote country surrounded by the tall old growth Spruce trees.

This morning I managed to break some eggs ๐Ÿฅš in the cooler accidentally and then with the remaining eggs made breakfast. ๐Ÿณ I’m trying to use up whatever is left as after five days in the wilderness the ice is all but done. I have a few hot dogs left ๐ŸŒญ and breakfast sausage but I’m hoping for enough cool for them to survive. More drizzle and cool this morning, incentivized me to take camp โ›บ down early lest things get wet.

Hiked back to Big Alderbed this morning. ๐Ÿ  I’m watching the fish jump in the lake to grab flies. The East Canada Creek was low enough flowing from Big Alderbed I could cross without having to do the alternative Bushwhack along the south shore. Upper part of the trail past the stream cross is unmarked – that’s despite the big sign at the trail head and many markers on the obvious part of the trail. It’s like the DEC ran out of markers and just gave up. ๐Ÿ”ต Drizzle continued this morning.

I was disappointed to see a bunch of litter ๐Ÿšฎ at the Powley Bridge campsite. I picked up some of it although I didn’t have a bag or gloves ๐Ÿงค with me so I didn’t get it all. I don’t leave a mess or a even trace if I can avoid it. Maybe some stirred up dirt ๐Ÿ’ฉ but that’s part of walking on the land and the grass will regrow.

Truth be told, I was in no rush to head home ๐Ÿก, I’ve enjoyed being disconnected from the world ๐Ÿ—บ and email ๐Ÿ“ง. No social media and I mostly didn’t listen to the radio ๐Ÿ“ป news. There’s just been so much going on lately and I wanted to be away from it all. It may be a while until I get to go another weekend like this.

July 26, 2020 Night

Good evening! Partly clear and 74 degrees at the Good Luck Cliffs. There is a west breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 65 degrees. The muggy weather ends Tuesday around 3 pm. ๐Ÿ˜“

I decided to hike up Good Luck Cliffs and watch the sunset. ๐ŸŒ‡ I know it’s a pretty steep trail but I brought multiple flashlights ๐Ÿ”ฆ and plan to head down the mountain as soon as the sun dips below the horizon. Then just the long trip back to Albany – hope to be home before 11 pm, so I can get a good night’s sleep and then unpack in the morning.

This morning started out cool ๐Ÿ—ป with the low dew point making it feel a bit like an autumn morning than a mid summer day. As the day progressed it warmed up but still a great morning. Not a cloud in the sky to start out the day.

I hiked back to Goldmine Falls on Saturday and again this morning. โ›ฒ I had never been back to Goldmine Falls but I saw a bunch of people parked by there this morning ๐Ÿ…ฟ and decided I had to check it out. The Goldmine Falls were beautiful – the water has almost a gold color as it looks like the granite there has some pyrite or other sulfuric rock mixed in. They are really pretty and a nice series of gentle cascades with pools at the bottom. Looked like a nice swimming hole – seemed like a few people hiking back there had bathing suits on, ๐Ÿ‘™although truth be told I think for cooling off the Potholers are bigger and you don’t have the half hour walk back to your car to get all sweaty. Pictures some time this week.

Spent the morning at Goldmine Falls which was pretty, a great place to sit and contemplate, ๐Ÿ’ญ I was working on some blog posts until a big ol deer fly bit me and I dropped my phone in the drink. ๐Ÿ“ฑ It dried out and all is good now.

I told myself I could stay one more night ๐ŸŒƒ and work from Speculator but truth be told I’ve been gone for nine days now and I really should get home as I should check the mail and my apartment. While I didn’t run out of propane the tank is close to empty and I really only bought enough clothes for four or five days but I stretched it by not changing every day and basically just have really dirty clothes left now. ๐Ÿ‘š

The Potholers were nice ๐ŸŠ but not a lot of water. ๐Ÿ’ฆ I was surprised how much the water levels had dropped since last weekend. Water was also quite warm, probably due to the lower water levels. ๐Ÿ’ง It was nice although I probably could have spent more time there and less in the hammock but I like looking at the trees as they away in the wind. I kind of wish I had my kayak ๐Ÿšฃ today but it would have been a pain to haul around all week and would have caused problems with solar for work. โ˜€

The day before got a big ol deer fly bite in my arm ๐Ÿ™‹ while hanging out at the Potholers and boy oh boy did it swell up and was painful. But by this morning it was gone.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 66 degrees at 5am. Four degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 65 at 8pm. West wind around 7 mph. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies. It became somewhat humid as the night progressed. It got down to 61 degrees. The record low of 47 occurred back in 1977.

Tonight will have a First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon with 43% illuminated. At 8 PM, the moon was in the south-southwest (210ยฐ) at an altitude of 36ยฐ from the horizon, some 226,352 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. ๐Ÿš€ At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by January 14th. Buckle up for safety! ๐Ÿ’บ The Strugeon ๐Ÿก Moon is on Monday, August 3. The darkest hour is at 1:05 am, followed by dawn at 5:10 am, and sun starting to rise at 5:43 am in the east-northeast (62ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 18 seconds. Sunrise is one minute later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:25 am with sun in the east-northeast (69ยฐ). Tonight will have 9 hours and 17 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 2 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after noon. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Mostly sunny ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 83 degrees at 1pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around July 25th. Maximum dew point of 71 at 5pm. West wind 9 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 88 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1955.

Surprisingly thought for all the adventures ๐Ÿš˜ and work outside of Spectulator I’ve not racked that many miles up on my truck and I spent two weekends up at the Potholers. โ›บ I am due for an oil change. ๐Ÿ”ง I’ll just take it to the shop because it’s a pain to find motor oil and the filter can be hard to get off. Probably the local shop because I’m no longer working downtown and it’s easier to just walk over there.

Friday evening after work went for a brief swim ๐ŸŠ and got ice cream ๐Ÿง at Speculator Creamery. I was under impressed with the carmel sundae I ordered – I thought it was overpriced and super salty. Honestly, I am craving Glen Dairy bar. ๐ŸฆI love that place. ๐Ÿ˜ Maybe I’ll end up in the Finger Lakes in two to three weeks.

I was kind of hoping to get one of those campsites in Powley Place ๐Ÿ’ญ or maybe the Clockmill Corner Campsite or one of the other ones farther north. But all but the Sand Lake Roadside Campsite 18, Campsite 16 and Campsite 14 were taken. Maybe Campsite 5 and 6 were open but I didn’t want to camp the same place as last weekend, so I didn’t drive down that far. I was surprised how popular it was on a Friday evening, when often in years past a lot of sites never get taken but on holidays. I’ve heard camping and wilderness activities is more popular these days and there are fewer campsites with the road closure. I am thinking at this point with the road closure the next time I’ll be up here is during Indian Summer come September after Labor Day Weekend. But who knows, I might be busy with work then but I’m hopeful for one more weekend at the Potholers. ๐ŸŠ

Funny enough, more campsite opened up on Saturday. โ›บSaturday night I could have camped at Powley Place Bridge aka Big Alderbed Trailhead. I love that site, especially at night hanging out on Powley Bridge. Be different this year with the new bridge. ๐ŸŒ‰ Seems odd that people would camp all weekend and leave for the weekend but maybe their three days were up or they planned to head somewhere else on Saturday.

Campsite 14 is fine, it’s camping at Piseco Powley Road โ›บ but it’s hardly anything special – although over time it grew on me and I might camp at this site some future night. Not quite as remote as I thought – I felt like the campsite was over a half mile away but I still could hear music ๐ŸŽถ and hooting and hollaring from the other site so I reduced my music down too. ๐ŸŽต That said, it was kind of cool because it lead me to discover Goldmine Falls and let me see more of the land around Notch Mountain and Goldmine Mountain. โ›ฒ That said, I was kind of hoping for the site at Clock Mill Corners or Powley Place but even at 5:30 on a Friday most were taken.

The driveway to campsite was steep ๐Ÿš™ and eroded. I found a bunch of rock, stone and mud from the road to improve it but it’s still probably not perfect for passenger cars but it easy for 4×4 trucks. While before I repaired the driveway I drove my truck up it, it was steep to say the least and I wouldn’t wanted to back into the driveway like I was able to do after visiting the Potholers, lest I bottom out. It was that bad. ๐Ÿ˜• With the gear up it was impossible to turn around although even before I set up camp it was tight. It’s not a real big campsite by any means.

In four weeks on August 23 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (286ยฐ) at 7:48 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 38 minutes and 28 seconds earlier then today. In 2019 on that day, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 77 and 58 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 80 and 59 degrees. The record high of 94 degrees was set back in 1947.

Looking ahead, I have a long drive home ๐Ÿก.
