Good morning! Happy Ugly Truck Day ๐Ÿšš! Humid, damp, overcast and around 74 degrees at the Cherry Ridge Camping Area. โ›… There is a west breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 69 degrees. So far the weather on vacation hasn’t been really inspiring. The skies will clear around 9 pm.

I am actually hoping that the sun comes out earlier โ˜€ even though it will be hot just because I like nice sunny days and it will recharge the batteries and be nice when I get to the Taughannock Beach this afternoon before heading up to the National Forest tonight. I’ll doubt I’ll get the campsite I like up there tonight but I figure Sunday night it will be available and I’ll probably camp there through Wednesday and then for Thursday night head out west to Allegany County.

Today will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 2pm. Partly sunny โ˜€, with a high of 88 degrees at 3pm. Five degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 74 at 12pm. Heat index values as high as 97. Southwest wind 6 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 88 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1991.

The sun will set at 8:34 pm with dusk around 9:07 pm, which is 48 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, watch out for thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 83 degrees. The dew point will be 74 degrees. The heat index around sunset will be 85. โ›ฑ Definitely muggy but not as bad as in the city. There will be a west breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 52 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 43 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before midnight. Mostly cloudy , with a low of 71 degrees at 5am. Nine degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 74 at 6pm. West wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 64 degrees. The record low of 45 occurred back in 1974.

Replacement burner on the camp stove is working well. ๐Ÿ”ฅ I do need to stop this morning and get some deodorant and clothes pins, the later I forget to buy on Thursday. I’m going to take US 20 out to Montezuma and get my mom some wine ๐Ÿท and then head south on NY 414 to Trumansburg to swim. ๐ŸŠ Air conditioning will feel nice in the truck.

On this day in 1969, Apollo 11’s crew successfully makes the first landing on the Moon in the Sea of Tranquility. ๐ŸŒ• Americans Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the Moon, well at least in England. Us Americans would get to watch it the next day due to the time zone difference.

July 15, 2019 Night

Good evening! Partly clear under the full moon ๐ŸŒ• and 71 degrees in Delmar. Calm wind. The dew point is 58 degrees. It is beautiful moonlit night before the heat and humidity really kicks in later in the week.

I got some nice fresh and cold milk from Stewart’s, ๐Ÿฎ and I appreciated the local cows with some fresh blueberries and cherries ๐Ÿ’. I liked the blueberries but I guess the cherries I bought where only modestly sweet. I thought about buying ice cream but this is a healthier option. It was a nice reward after a pleasant evening walk. ๐Ÿšถ

Been working on Save the Pine Bush stuff at the library, doing research and recreating tax maps for a project for Save the Pine Bush. Some of those metes and bounds for the Crossgates parcel are tough to reproduce. ๐ŸŒ The metes are hard to find the reference point of the imaginary lines, and the bounds often follow detailed building edges. And it’s a shit ton of parcels. But I’m making progress. ๐ŸŒฒI’ll be back at it Wednesday night, as tomorrow night I’m over at John Wolcott house for his history project and file sorting. ๐Ÿ“‚ I’m thinking if a print the tax maps (probably after breaking the county’s silly print disable – Linux don’t care ๐Ÿง), and download the underlying OrthoPhoto geotiff, then I can probably work on it one day at camp off line.

Tomorrow marks 50 years since the first departure from the earth to the moon. ๐Ÿš€ While only 24 human beings would ever walk on the moon, it was a remarkable accomplishment that was probably abandoned much too early in our history only three years later in December 1972. Some people are skeptical about the moon landings, it only happened six times by man before getting the congressional axe. โœ‚

I should see if PBS or one of the other YouTube channels will have a special I can watch about Apollo 11. ๐ŸŽ‘ It would be fun to watch on the laptop while I’m at camp during vacation. That said by the time on my trip it should be the last quarter moon ๐ŸŒ“ so it should be good for looking at the stars assuming that I have clear nights up at Foster Pond. ๐ŸŒŸ Maybe see some shooting stars.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 59 degrees at 6am. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around August 21st. Maximum dew point of 58 at 10pm. Light southwest wind. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies. It was humid. It got down to 69 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1946.

Tonight will have a Full Buck Moon ๐ŸŒ• with 99% illuminated. The sun will rise at 5:31 am with the first light at 4:58 am, which is 51 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 9 hours and one minute of darkness, an increase of one minute and 29 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have patchy fog before 7am. Otherwise, mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 86 degrees at 3pm. Three degrees above normal. That’s like a hot summer day with humidity pushing in tomorrow. Maximum dew point of 67 at 6pm. Calm wind becoming south around 6 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 96 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1900.

So I have the camping permit ๐ŸŽซ for camping in Wellsboro Thursday through Saturday nights but I don’t have to camp all those nights. It’s just an option, although I’ll probably stay at least one night as I don’t want to drive all the way back from the Allegheny National Forest in one day and I’d like to hike at least part of the Pine Creek Gorge trail. ๐Ÿšถ I wish I had a working bicycle, that’s a good way to explore it.

I’m still on the fence about leaving Friday night versus Saturday morning. If I leave Friday night I will be out in the Finger Lakes by Saturday afternoon as I’ll stay at Brookfield on Friday night and drive the rest of the way on Saturday. ๐ŸŠ Probably take old Route Twenty out through Montezuma as mom wants me to get her wine ๐Ÿท and I like avoiding both Cortland and Ithaca going that way. If I leave Saturday, I’ll go to Glimmerglass State Park Beach on Otsego Lake, then Brookfield Saturday night, and get to the Finger Lakes National Forest later on Sunday night, when I think it’s most likely that I can get the Chicken Co-op Campsite that my GPS likes to call it. โ›บ Which ever day I arrive, probably before setting up camp I’ll visit Taughnahock State Park and check out the beach on Cayuga Lake. I checked, the Winery opens at nine AM both days including Sunday. I didn’t know wineries could sell before noon in New York but apparently they can. That said I doubt I’d be out to Montezuma before noon either day.๐Ÿฆ Probably won’t spend much time at Montezuma as it’s going to hot and sticky and there won’t be many birds out and about.

I kind of would prefer to visit the Watkins Glen Pool on the weekend ๐ŸŠ as it’s fully open then. Weekdays half of the pool is closed I believe although maybe not if it’s hot and sunny and there is enough people. But then again the swim lanes are fully open and the nice chairs are always available when the pool is open. The other thing is I only plan to spend half the week in the Finger Lakes, the balance of the week will be in Allegany or Cattaraugus County in Western New York and then down to Pennsylvania for a few days. ๐Ÿš™

In four weeks on August 12 the sun will be setting at 8:01 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 30 minutes and 5 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had humid, partly sunny and temperatures between 79 and 67 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 81 and 61 degrees. The record high of 99 degrees was set back in 1944.

Looking ahead, Work Like a Dog Day ๐Ÿฉ is in 3 weeks, Last Sunset After 8 PM ๐ŸŒ† is in 4 weeks, National Dog Day ๐Ÿฉ is in 6 weeks, Labor Day ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿญ is in 7 weeks and Columbus Day ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ is in 12 weeks.

Crane Lake 85

July 15, 2019 Morning

Good morning! My calendar ๐Ÿ“… says Happy Cow Appreciation Day ๐Ÿ‚! But I guess the internet disagrees. I still appreciate all that cows do regardless of the day. ๐Ÿฎ Three weeks to Work Like a Dog Day ๐Ÿฉ. That’s everyday where I work lately, especially on Mondays and Fridays. But next week is vacation.

Currently it’s partly cloudy and 67 degrees at the land of the Delmaritian. Calm wind. The dew point is 59 degrees. The barometric pressure has been rising all morning according to the display in my bedroom.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 83 degrees at 3pm. Typical for today. It’s the hottest time of the year but that doesn’t mean it can’t be fairly nice like today. Maximum dew point of 59 at 8am. Northwest wind 3 to 8 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 93 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1997.

Today it’s back to work. ๐Ÿ’ผ It was a bit of a rush to catch the bus ๐Ÿš as I had to unpack the cooler and some of my camping gear and take a shower ๐Ÿšฟ before running out to the bus. My eye ๐Ÿ‘€ and throat are a little bit irritated but I’ll be fine by the Monday meeting I hope. I wouldn’t have been so concerned with getting in close to on time โŒš if it wasn’t for the dang meeting. I got to finish my notes ๐Ÿ“ and get through the news clips. ๐Ÿ“ฐ

The sun will set at 8:31 pm with dusk around 9:04 pm, which is 39 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 77 degrees. The dew point will be 59 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 59 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 30 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 62 degrees at 5am. Typical for tonight. Maximum dew point of 59 at 7pm. West wind around 6 mph becoming calm in the evening. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies. It was humid. It got down to 69 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1946.

On this day in 1959, the Steel Strike of 1959 gets underway, forcing contractors to either import steel or delay construction projects. ๐Ÿ‘ทMany chose to import lower-cost steel, with the result being the US Steel industry never recovering.๐Ÿšง

This weekend is expected to be really hot to start off my vacation. ๐ŸŠ Saturday, mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 93. Maximum dew point of 70 at 6am. Sunday, sunny and hot, with a high near 91. Maximum dew point of 66 at 6am. Typical average high for the weekend is 83 degrees.

I am thinking about leaving on Saturday for summer vacation, the first day camping at Brookfield and swimming at Glimmerglass Beach. ๐ŸŠ I thinking leave before eight on Saturday, get to the beach when it opens at ten, swim, then camp in Brookfield. Sunday head out to the Finger Lakes National Forest, maybe swimming in Seneca Lake on Saturday. I’d miss our on a night of camping but the ice would remain longer and I probably get an earlier start on Saturday. Plus then when I got out to the Finger Lakes, I could get and set up at the campsite I really like for the full week or as long as I decided to stay there. โ›บ

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Work Like a Dog Day ๐Ÿฉ when the sun will be setting at 8:10 pm with dusk at 8:41 pm. On that day in 2018, we had hot, humid, sunny, patches of fog and temperatures between 90 and 63 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 82 degrees. We hit a record high of 99 back in 1955.

A Hot Dog

July 14, 2019 Afternoon

Good afternoon! Happy National Nude Day. Partly sunny and 79 degrees at the Mine Kill State Park. Not nude here but wearing my bathing suit as I swim. There is a west-northwest breeze at 14 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 58 degrees. This is a nice day with lots of sun but the breeze is a bit chilly when you get out of the pool. But I guess that is to be expected, it’s often cool here in the foot hills of the Catskills.

It’s been a nice weekend in this vacationatte of sorts, and overnight trip to Schoharie County, โ›บ although I ended up drinking, well getting over served, ๐Ÿป beer and shots with the other camper down at the big campsite on the Betty Brook. But it was a fun night hanging out with some cool people from Jefferson who are converting an old school bus ๐Ÿš to a camper using junked RV components. Small town life must be fun.

After hanging out with them until quarter to midnight I built a small fire to burn some camp garbage and just to have a fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ I could have brought it home but fire is more fun, watching as the paper blackened and the wrappers melted. Cracked open yet another beer ๐Ÿบ and then laid back in my hammock until 1:30 am listening to a podcast, probably dozing off until a rain shower came through. ๐Ÿ’ฆ The fake lightening bugs were neat although not as pretty as up at Moose River Plains.

This morning was a slow one, as I was a little bit hung over, ๐Ÿ˜ฉ after the previous evening. Plus I left my propane tank home, so I had to build a fire, get good coals to make coffee โ˜• and eggs for breakfast, but a campfire breakfast ๐Ÿณ sure is good when your hung over. I got to do more campfire breakfast on vacation, maybe with charcoal as that’s easier to light then building a fire every time. I also spent some time swinging back and forth on the most nice of mornings in the hammock. Departed camp at noon ๐Ÿ•›.

Today I hiked up Vromans Nose ๐Ÿ‘ƒ and stopped for a few pictures. Also visited Looking Glass Pond ๐ŸŽฃ but did no fishing as I was running late. Got blueberries and cherries ๐Ÿ’ at Boreingers, got sweet corn ๐ŸŒฝ at Max Shauls, and ice cream ๐Ÿฆ at the restaurant at Fultonham. And now I’m swimming ๐ŸŠ at Mine Kill State Park.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 53 degrees at 4am. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around June 5th. Maximum dew point of 57 at 7pm. Northwest wind 8 to 13 mph becoming light in the evening. In 2018, we had partly cloudy skies. It was sticky. It got down to 72 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1950.

The sun will set at 8:33 pm with dusk around 9:07 pm, which is 36 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 71 degrees. The dew point will be 56 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 11 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 59 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 25 seconds over yesterday.

Tomorrow will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 79 degrees at 3pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 21st. Maximum dew point of 58 at 6pm. Calm wind becoming northwest 5 to 9 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It became sticky as the day progressed. The high last year was 93 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1997.

On this day in 1969, the $500, $1,000, $5,000 and $10,000 bills are officially withdrawn from circulation. After this date, if you wanted to buy a large purchase in cash, you needed a lot of hundred dollars in bills. ๐Ÿ’ต Or just use a credit card or a bank check. ๐Ÿ’ณ They had last been printed in 1945, and were finally dropped from circulation in 1969, in part as an effort to reduce corruption and money scams.๐Ÿ’ฐ๐Ÿ‘ฟ

One month ๐Ÿ“… from now the Altamont Fair Opens ๐ŸŽก when the sun will be setting at 8:00 pm with dusk at 8:30 pm. They say that all good things must end some day, autumn leaves must fall. ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‚ But first fair season.

Peaking Thru The Trees

June 28, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Next Friday is Dog Days of Summer ๐ŸŒป. Mostly sunny and 68 degrees at the Elm Ave Park & Ride – CDTA. Calm wind. The dew point is 61 degrees. Not a half bad morning and I was able to make it to the express bus ๐Ÿš on time despite having to run to Stewart’s to get milk this morning. ๐Ÿฎ Got have the cow juice to have good coffee and a good morning. Not a big thing getting milk, but it adds 10 minutes to my morning, and I’m always running tight because I’m not a real morning point.

Last night was the Save the Pine Bush Hike ๐ŸŒฒ and it was a beautiful evening, with mostly clear skies, mild but not too humid. We hiked the large yellow trail in the Karner Barrens past the landfill and Thruway, the wetlands and restored area, spending about a half hour after dusk โœจ looking up at the stars from overlook dune. It was a three mile hike but we managed to stretch it out for almost three hours, I wasn’t back to my truck until nearly quarter to ten. But it was a beautiful summer night.

Going to be a another warm summer day. It will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 87 degrees at 5pm. Six degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 61 at 8am. Calm wind becoming west around 6 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. It was sticky. The high last year was 81 degrees. The record high of 99 was set in 1901.

The sun will set at 8:37 pm with dusk around 9:12 pm, which is 2 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 80 degrees. The dew point will be 60 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 15 hours and 16 minutes of daytime, an increase of 29 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 3am. Increasing clouds ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 67 degrees at 4am. Seven degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 63 at 6am. Light and variable wind. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies. It was humid. It got down to 62 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1981.

On this day in 1896, An explosion in the Newton Coal Company’s Twin Shaft Mine ๐Ÿš‚ in Pittston, Pennsylvania results in a massive cave-in that kills 58 miners. ๐Ÿ’ฃ Also in 1969, Stonewall riots begin in New York City, marking the start of the Gay Rights Movement. Lots of explosive things happening on this day in history.๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ

Tomorrow will have showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly between 8am and 3pm. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 82 degrees at 5pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around July 2nd. Maximum dew point of 67 at 11am. Light and variable wind becoming west 5 to 9 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. It was sticky. The high last year was 89 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1944.

Based on Saturday’s forecast, I am inclined to stay in town this weekend, ๐Ÿ  and maybe work on repairing the table on Saturday and testing out the camp stove a bit more. I might also want to shop and start packing for the long Independence Day Weekend — probably heading up to Moose Plains but I could change my mind. I could still go out to Schoharie on Saturday for an overnight if it turns out to be exceptionally nice, but I have my doubts.

I am almost thinking about heading up to Piseco-Powley Road for the long weekend, but the thing is it would be four nights, so I’ll have to move to a different campsite for the second half of the week unless I get a camping permit — which might be to late to do at this point. With Moose, I’d drive up to Mason Lake on Wednesday night then camp in plains Thursday, Friday, Saturday. ๐Ÿ• The potholers might be a lot of fun if it’s hot and sunny — there are swimming opportunities at Moose Plains but I’d rather do the potholers then swim in the somewhat marginal Moose River. That said, I can go up to Piseco-Powley Road almost any hot summer weekend, so why spend my Independence Day Weekend somewhere boring?

Looking ahead to Sunday, a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 8am. Partly sunny, ๐ŸŒค with a high near 74. West wind 8 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Maximum dew point of 63 at 10am. Typical average high for the weekend is 81 degrees.

As previously noted, next Friday is Dog Days of Summer ๐ŸŒป when the sun will be setting at 8:36 pm with dusk at 9:10 pm. On that day in 2018, we had hot, humid, mostly sunny, thunderstorm and temperatures between 92 and 75 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 82 degrees. We hit a record high of 99 back in 1919.

 Potholers
