Building Shadow Analysis Program

Building Shadow Analysis Program

Earlier this week I wrote a small PHP script for analysis of the shadow cast by buildings on the surrounding landscape. To obtain sun position and altitude, it relies on SunCalc PHP which must be included in the script. It goes throughout the year, churning out how much of a shadow a building will produce each hour, in feet and direction. Additionally, the script will calculate the maximum point the shadow will be cast as a set of coordinates.

<?php
// The current values entered into this script currently are for the Empire Plaza.
$latitude =  42.64915;
$longitude = -73.75950;
$height =  610;

$start = strtotime("January 1, 2020 12 AM");
$end = strtotime("December 31, 2020 11 PM");

include("suncalc.php");

// Compass as a Reference
$compass = array(
			'north', 'north-northeast', 'northeast',
			'east-northeast', 'east', 'east-southeast',
			'southeast', 'south-southeast', 'south',
			'south-southwest', 'southwest',
			'west-southwest', 'west', 'west-northwest',
			'northwest', 'north-northwest');

function newPos($lat, $lng, $dist, $dir) {
    // Earth Radius in KM
    $R = 6378.14;

    // distance in feet to KM
    $d = (($dist * 0.3048) / 1000);

    // Degree to Radian
    $lat1 = $lat * (M_PI/180);
    $lng1 = $lng * (M_PI/180);
    $brng = $dir * (M_PI/180);

    $lat2 = asin(sin($lat1)*cos($d/$R) + cos($lat1)*sin($d/$R)*cos($brng));
    $lng2 = $lng1 + atan2(sin($brng)*sin($d/$R)*cos($lat1),cos($d/$R)-sin($lat1)*sin($lat2));

    # back to degrees
    $lat2 = $lat2 * (180/M_PI);
    $lng2 = $lng2 * (180/M_PI);

  return "$lat2,$lng2";
}

$output = "Month,Day,Hour,Sun Angle,Sun Position,Sun Pos Name,Shadow Length,Shadow Direction,Shadow Dir Name,Orginal Lat, Original Lng, Maximum Shadow Lat, Maximum Shadow Lng\n";

	$output .= "\n";
}

echo $output;

Here is an example output:

First Big Camping Trip of the Year, A Look Back

Every year, I usually kick off the camping season with a big road trip somewhere. Here are some of the trips I’ve done in years past:

2016: Finger Lakes National Forest

April 2016 was a relatively cold month after a relatively warm winter. The first night I camped at Stony Pond in Nelson. It got down to 15 degrees.

I visited the Montezuma Wildlife Refuge then camped off of Chicken Coop Road at the Finger Lakes National Forest.

Took the tarps down so I won't have to deal with wet ones in the morning

Rather cold weather up on Hector Backbone, so I strung up tarps to block the wind and built big campfires.

 Rainy afternoon

Rather gray as things hadn’t really greened up yet.

Foster Pond

But in lower elevations, especially along Cayuga Lake, things where starting to bud up, like as seen with this picture of Taughannock State Park.

Spring will arrive

2015: Balsam Pond, Long Pond and Chenango County

Rained a bit during the day but camping was great Balsam Pond.

Quiet, battery powered.

Beautiful sunrise on Balsam Pond.

After sunset

Nice afternoonΒ fishing on Whitney Point Reservior, but I didn’t get many bites.

Nice morning

2014: East Branch of Sacanadaga River

In 2014, I camped on the East Branch of Sacandaga River. It was a pretty night.

I used my solar panel a bit under the sunny skies to keep the accessory battery charged.

2013: Balsam Pond, Long Pond and Chenango County

In many ways my 2013 trip was similiar to my 2015 trip. I camped at Long Pond, which was very much so still frozen this year.

Down By Long Pond

Hiked up the Berry Hill Firetower.

I worked with AI to develop my dream homestead [Expires May 13 2024]

Visited Rogers Environmental Education Center.

East Towards Sherburne

2012: Crane Mountain and Harrisburg NY

Hike both Crane Mountain and Hadley Mountain and camped off of Harrisburg Road in the Adirondacks.

Crane Pond Mountain with Eleventh Mountain Behind It

My truck didn’t have a cap then, so I camped in a tent.

GE Sillicone Mound

It was fun camping in my then new truck.

January 29, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy 36th Birthday to Me πŸŽ‰! Ain’t I special. I don’t know I still had to pay my bus fare and go to work. As CDTA likes to say, “if you worked for us, today would be a paid holiday.” They have people’s birthdays as paid as they have to have drivers every day of the year including Christmas. Three weeks to 5:30 PM Sunset πŸŒ†. Clouds in this salt encrusted world and 19 degrees in Delmar. ❄ There is a south-southeast breeze at 10 mph. πŸƒ. There are 4.5 inches of snow on the ground. I’ll have more to report on that front come tomorrow. β˜ƒ ️Things will start to thaw out at Sunday around 11 am. 🌑️

Today will snow, mainly after noon. 🌨 High of 32 degrees at 3pm. One degree above normal, which is similiar to a typical day around January 31st. Southeast wind 10 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 39 degrees. The record high of 54 was set in 2002. 8.3 inches of snow fell back in 1990.❄

The sun will set at 5:05 pm with dusk around 5:35 pm, which is one minute and 18 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for snow 🌨 and temperatures around 31 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 9 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 53 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 16 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will snow, mainly before 1am. 🌨 Low of 17 degrees at 6am. One degree above normal, which is similiar to a typical night around February 6th. Southeast wind 6 to 9 mph becoming northwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible. In 2018, we had cloudy in the evening, which became light snow by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 18 degrees. The record low of -12 occurred back in 1965.

Tomorrow will have a slight chance of snow before 7am, then a chance of snow after 11am. Partly sunny 🌨, with a high of 19 degrees at 1pm. 12 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around -8 at 6pm; West wind 6 to 11 mph increasing to 12 to 17 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny. The high last year was 28 degrees. The record high of 56 was set in 2013. 11.0 inches of snow fell back in 1966.❄

It’s officially now my 36th birthday, so it’s been a decade and a half since I could legally drink beer, although I rarely drink nowadays because of the cost and because I worry about the health implications of drinking.🍺 Maybe occasionally at camp but that’s about it. I look at getting older as not just more gray hair πŸ‘΄but also an opportunity to save more money πŸ’° and get one day closer to my goals. Savings grows slowly but a constant rate means that your growing them and things are getting better slowly but surely.

Going to get cold after the snow the next few days. I’ve found my hat and scarf, I know I’ll probably need to be bundled up after work tonight. ❄With the cold weather coming I’ll probably not turn the heat down nearly as much in the day or at bedtime. The more constant heat means it stays more comfortable both when I’m home and away.

Yesterday was a pretty long day, although not that bad. By mid evening I had a bit of a migraine and still have a bit of cough. I’ve also achy on in off for like two weeks now. 😡 Maybe it’s just getting old. Or a cold and I’ve been so busy so not enough time to recover or maybe I didn’t get enough sleep on Sunday night. Not sure what it was, I felt better when they got us sandwiches at work for staying late. I was able to catch the eight fifteen bus home.

When I got home, I went to work sewing the button that had popped off my blazer at work. That happens every year or two, not a big deal, I always make sure to sew it on with heavy carpet threads.πŸ‘”I’ve done it many times before. Finally wore my new dress shoes to work and they are really comfortable. Next up I need to see if I can order more dress pants as the ones have are starting to get a bit worn, especially in the style I really like.

Bought some milk at the store last night. I didn’t have much milk for coffee yesterday which didn’t make me happy. β˜•This morning with milk for my coffee it was much better. I also had waffles and frozen pineapple on top of it. 🐜 Found a few more ants around, so I cleaned up again and will get some ant bait later in the week. But not that bad, all things said and done. I just got to make sure to keep things cleaner, and be careful if I drop things on the floor to quickly sweep them up.

Ordered a replacement logic board connector to fix the broken headphone jack on my laptop. Only going to cost me $12 and the swapping out the part should be easy so I won’t have to worry about hauling around that USB audio dongle anymore.πŸ”ŠΒ Then I won’t have issues with the internal speaker not working due to it thinking the headphone is plugged in, and the sound quality will be better then the dongles which in my experience seem to be lacking in bass and clarity compared to the built in sound.

The lights in my bedroom continue to work good. πŸ’‘I like controlling them with my phone compared to using the TV remote, as I have much better control over the brightness and color then I did with the old set up. I just need to finish the code,Β πŸ”’Β so I can have the lights come on automatically in the morning, but the classes and structure are almost done so it’s just a matter of finding the time to write the methods.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until 5:30 PM Sunset πŸŒ† when the sun will be setting at 5:32 pm with dusk at 6:01 pm. On that day in 2018, we had rain showers, partly cloudy and temperatures between 44 and 23 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 36 degrees. We hit a record high of 66 back in 1981.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. 😎 Oh, wow! I thought it was supposed to be colder than the president. Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 22. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 38. Typical average high for the weekend is 32 degrees.

With February coming hoping to get out winter camping again but it depends on the weather, work and family obligations.β›Ί I think have too much to do this weekend but maybe next week. I’m leading the Pine Bush hike on the 23rd as I never got around to recruiting a leader. I will definitely have to find a leader though for March as I may have to work weekends during that month on state budget shit. πŸ’©

In four weeks on February 26 the sun will be setting at 5:41 pm,πŸŒ„ which is 36 minutes and 16 seconds later then today. In 2018 on that day, we had sunny, mild and temperatures between 51 and 32 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 38 and 20 degrees. The record high of 63 degrees was set back in 1976.

Looking ahead, 5:30 PM Sunset πŸŒ† is in 3 weeks, Last Sunset After 8:30 PM πŸŒ† is in 24 weeks and Election Day 2020 πŸ—³οΈ is in 92 weeks.

 Secret Overlook

January 10, 2019 Evening

Good evening! Five weeks to Valentines Day ❀️. Nothing out there tonight to warm your heart. It’s as frigid at the heart of the grinch. Still clauwdy with snow showers and 25 degrees in Delmar. ❄ Breezy, ️20 mph breeze from the west-northwest 🌬 .The current wind chill is 11. There is a dusting of snow on the ground. β˜ƒ Kind of another cold evening, and it’s only going to get colder as we head into the weekend. But at least I left the heat turned up a bit at home, so it shouldn’t find it so hard to climb out of the cold. But if necessary, I’ll turn that expensive electric heat on for a few minutes. I am trying to save money wherever I can towards my future and owning land, but I can probably afford a few pennies here and there so I’m not shivering while I’m home.

Things should start to thaw out at Tuesday around noontime. 🌡️ Do you think it will warm up before the federal government reopens? At least the Energy Department is funded so I’ll have things to graph from the Energy Information Agency. Not so much from the Census bureau but at least they weren’t such pissy pants like in 2013 when they took down the website and I camped out in the National Forest.🏕 I guess I can download data or camp in the wilderness without the help of the gubernatorial. Haha. This post is becoming political, kind of like how Facebook thinks I should follow Walton Manure Management.

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌃, with a low of 12 degrees at 5am. Two degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around -2 at 6am; Northwest wind 14 to 17 mph. In 2018, we had mostly clear in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 37 degrees. The record low of -25 occurred back in 1968. Definitely warmer then those days when Judy In Disguise (With Glasses) with playing on the radio every five minutes.👓

Tonight will have a Waxing Crescent Moon 🌒 with 30% illuminated with the moon setting at 9:09 pm. The moon will rise at 10:36 am. The First Quarter Moon is on Sunday night with partly cloudy skies. The Wolf Moon 🌝 is on Sunday, January 20th. The sun will rise at 7:24 am with the first light at 6:52 am, which is 17 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌄 Tonight will have 14 hours and 41 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 25 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 18 degrees at 2pm. 12 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around -1 at 10am; Northwest wind around 15 mph. Yuck, that’s winter. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies . The high last year was 51 degrees. Not all winters are that unpleasant. The record high of 57 was set in 1975. 8.0 inches of snow fell back in 1922.❄

So I got the SSD Drive but it turns out what I thought was a M.2 SATA slot in my laptop for plugging it into turned out to be the DVD drive’s connector. I was confused because the manual talks about the M.2 SATA connector but it’s only included on select models with the SSD included from the factory. So I ended up ordering a M.2 to SATA-III adapter, and will have to pull out the existing hard drive. 💾 Ducks as that wasn’t the plan but it should work.

I was doing some more research and I found I could order a DVD-drive sized enclosure for the existing hard-drive and replace the DVD drive with the second hard drive, bringing me up to the full 2 GB of space which I was expecting to have when I plugged it in last night. 📀 It’s just one screw to swap the DVD drive on my laptop, not that I’ve used it in a long time.

I was bummed out about it but then I thought about silly that is, especially because I think it was good to go with the M2 form factor with a adapter to be future compatible. 🗜 Mechanical drives are disappearing from computers and so are their drive bays.

I ended up sending $138 on the 1 GB SSD drive with tax which is a good price but it took six weeks to get it. 💰I debated the wisdom of spending the money but it will make my laptop much faster and extend its life. I have lots of memory and a fair amount of disk space but speed of the hard drive has always been sluggish with my laptop even with the lightweight XFCE window manager. I know every buck that I spend on toys is essentially stealing from my future, buying land and an off grid home out of New York but sometimes updating technology helps and I’m running low on disk space.

In the process of searching for the non existent m2 slot I discovered I could easily replace the broken headphone jack by replacing the small ioboard it’s mounted on for about $20 on Ebay, less if I buy used. 🔊 I want to confirm it’s actually that easy to remove but if that proves to be true, I’m going to fix it as I get tired of hauling around the USB external sound card – one of which broke and whose audio quality isn’t as good as the internal audio.

Cool this weekend with temperatures running 7 degrees below normal but otherwise sunny. πŸ˜€ Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 24. Northwest wind around 7 mph. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 23. Typical average high for the weekend is 30 degrees. It’s going to be nice enough I’m going to try to get out both days, but I think I will have to plan on being well bundled up as most of the weekend will be in the teens or low twenties, with a breeze.

In four weeks on February 7 the sun will be setting at 5:17 pm,🌄 which is 35 minutes and 13 seconds later then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had snow and temperatures between 27 and 13 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 33 and 16 degrees. The record high of 48 degrees was set back in 2005.

Looking ahead, Valentines Day ❀️ is in 5 weeks, Daylight Savings Time 🌆 is in 2 months, Spring 🌷 is in 10 weeks, Average High is 50 🌸 is in 11 weeks, Average High is 60 🌼 is in 14 weeks, Average High is 70 🐮 is in 18 weeks, Independence Day 🇺🇸 is in 25 weeks and August 🌻 is in 29 weeks.

April 12, 2018 – Next Sixteen Weeks

While lately it’s been pretty cool to start out the spring season, the weather is slowly but surely moderating.🌼🌻🌹🌺 This time of year sees the quickest average increases in warmth, and indeed with the lack of freezing temperatures over the next week, we should soon start to see some greening up of the landscape, at least in the city.

February 8, 2018 – Next Sixteen Weeks

Spring maybe a little over five and half weeks away, slowly but surely we are climbing out of the bleak of winter.β˜ƒ By March, temperatures in the 40s are common, and indeed sometimes we get weather in the 50s, 60s, and 70s.🌲 Who know how many much snow we get in March, it can very a lot from year to year.🌻

December 12, 2017 – Next Sixteen Weeks

We are now about two weeks out from 2018, with Easter about 16 weeks away. We still have some cooling to happen before we reach the coldest time of year, but slowly we will start digging ourselves out winter and warmer weather that is norm in spring time will once again return.
