Daily Update – September 16, 2022

Good morning! Survived another week, made it to Friday. ๐Ÿ˜ฒ

I was going to work from home today or probably more like work from the woods but I have a meeting and backgrounds to review this morning in the legislative office.

Partly sunny and 56 degrees in Albany, NY. โ›… There is a north-northwest breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 47 degrees.

Been just another long week. ๐Ÿข The work never seems to stop, everything seems to be a shit show and I forget things. ๐Ÿ“„ I’ve learned though not to respond to emails ๐Ÿ“ง after hours and use schedule send not to bother others unless it’s urgent during the off hours.

The latest thing I’ve been studying is Selenium for extracting data from interactive websites. ๐Ÿ–ฅ There is a lot of data out there on the internet that really can only be extracted using a full web browser with clicking and interacting with the fully rendered page. Basic html is fewer and farther between. For example, state board of elections election night returns. But with selenium you can control the full Firefox or Chrome browser and extract the data just like you would with rvest on more basic sites but with scripted clicks and text entry. Having some trouble getting Selenium up and running but I’m excited about the possibilities.

I got my electric bill ๐Ÿ”Œ and it’s back up but part of it after Labor Day I turned my hot water heater back on because cold showers ๐Ÿ›€ aren’t fun with it not being so warm out. I think it was like $68 which the days of $50 utilities off season seem to be long gone. โ™จ๏ธ Before you know it winter heating season will be back but I’ll keep the heat off and turned down as long as possible in favor of the electric blanket and going to bed early and occasional use of the space heater. I make good money ๐Ÿ’ต but I hate to incinerate cash ๐Ÿ”ฅ that can be invested towards owning my own land. ๐Ÿฎ

I might do an overnight tomorrow to Rennselearville State Forest โ›บ. Not a big trip just a day trip for hiking and wildlife observation on the haul roads and then maybe up on Mount Pisgah ๐Ÿ—ป or Scutt Road to look at the Catskills. I should use my view scape models to make up some maps of the viewable area from the overlooks.

Big RedPhotos and Videos of my lifted truck with its camper shell. Big Red’s Dual Battery Setup for Camp Power, Video Tour and Diagram. Big Red is getting old. What is next? I’ve thought about going carless for a while to save money and reduce pollution. Or maybe going bigger? Or smaller? Five dollar gas sucks.

๐Ÿ”ฅ๐ŸŒฒ Off-Grid Living ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿค

I am seriously thinking about building an off-grid house. I have a first draft. I need to learn CAD! I have a road map towards buying land and building. I concede might have to live with long commute and give up traveling and camping. I need to be strong.

Why off grid? Well, I’m not into contemporary society. I want to own land, but not be called a landowner, and a cabin, not hooked to electrical grid, farm, raise pigs for food and burn my own trash. I’m saving for a better tomorrow, hoping to make the leap to another freer state. Having acreage is important. Cornfields aren’t bad neighbors. Maybe though my vision has grown smaller and more local. More on off-grid living.

I am 16 years into my career and have made some significant progress in my life. I love my job. But I do wonder on all the things I’m missing out but saving sure makes me high. Maybe it will be different when I own my own land — the end of goal of all this saving.

2020 into 2021 during the pandemic was a year of remote work. It was a struggle not having internet at home, worked a lot out of my truck. But I worked remotely from Horseshoe Lake which was super cool.

Generally I like the idea of owning land in a red state, particularly Idaho, Iowa, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Wisconsin — and Midwest more generally. But I may settle for New York – it’s all about the f-ing money!

๐Ÿ’ป๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ’ป Open Source ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ๐Ÿ“

I use open source software and public sources of data for the blog. Quantum GIS (QGIS), GDAL/ogr2ogr, PyQGIS, GeoPANDAS, R Studio and Leaflet for map making, Arduino and ESP32 microprocessors, Ubuntu Linux and XFCE Window Manager. I’ve recently gotten interested in machine learning.

I avoid using commercial software like Microsoft Windows and do not have home internet or television. If you don’t use commercial software and use your brain, fears of computer viruses are overblown. I deleted most of my social media accounts.

Creating Digital Surface Models using LiDAR Point Clouds.

๐Ÿ“Š๐Ÿ—บ R Statistical Programming ๐Ÿ“œ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿซ

The R programming language and RStudio are powerful tools for statistical analysis, making maps and charts. Many of the blog posts and analysis I do are in R, ggplot not only makes great charts but also maps using tidycensus. Generally, R is better then Python for geospatial work.

Use IDW Interpolation to fill in missing Census data, Zonal Histograms for land cover, load WMS Aerial Photography in R, find mountain peaks, save Census shapefiles using tigris quickly, pull NY Election Night Results using Selenium. Fast reverse Geocoding in PostGIS. Working with PDFs in R. Fix a common error starting rselenium/wdman. Make data-filled calendars. R is wonderful and weird, learn it!

I often think politics is for losers. I’m into the politics of statistical analysis and reading history books.

I believe strongly in the first amendment, second amendment, oppose gun restrictions and I support de-funding the police in favor of lower-cost technology and civilian employees. Maybe use red flag laws for voting to stop dangerous voters? And the media should stop promoting mass-shootings, even if it’s super profitable for all involved. They should tax the media when it promotes violence. I think some people are much too paranoid in politics. How elections are rigged under law to benefit incumbents. But vote, it’s the best option and inexpensive.

Yeah for the third parties! I voted for Larry Sharpe for Governor and Jo Jergenson for President but my views are complicated and often vote for Democrats, after voting Jill Stein Green Party in 2016.

Generally, I think Biden has been a good change over DJT and glad the Trump era is over and are glad prosecutors and grand jurors are holding him responsible by indicting him for many serious felonies. I don’t think Trump can win in 2024, as nothing has changed politically from 2020.

I think rural people should be left alone and not worship government workers or have parades for them. I am no fan of Donald Trump, his speeches are bad, I don’t like Trump’s embrace of radical environmentalists, but do admire the homemade roadside monuments to DJT.

I don’t toke. But whatever. There are too many transit authorities.

๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒณThe Earth ๐ŸŒŽ ๐Ÿธ

Why I oppose wilderness areas and parks. It’s trendy to be green these days, but is eco-marketing good for the planet? I visited the Mount Storm Coal Plant and Corridor H.

I worry about a lot about overly-aggressive Climate Change Action, and Undermining Environment Laws for Climate Action. I think we should all admit we are Addicted to Fossil Fuels. These days, urban recycling has become a joke, when it’s still an option at all. It’s better to just buy less shit and avoid the alure of Costcos. I really don’t like how aging radicals have become industrial solar salespeople.

Big bucks are coming to state-designated disadvantaged communities under the CLCP. Which counties and political districts are in line for the the most pork? Interactive map.

I’m a big of farmers who are essentially Living Off the Earth and think Rednecks are Noble Savages. Dairy Farming are key to our rural landscape. I’d trust a farmer or a hunter in a pile of guts he’s butchered over any ivory-tower scientist.

๐ŸŒŽ๐Ÿ”† Industrial Solar ๐ŸŒž ๐Ÿญ

Hundreds of multi-acre industrial solar farms are being built in our state. How bad is solar for the environment? We should ask tough questions. Interactive of recently built solar farms, proposed facilities. List of proposed industrial solar facilities. See how the Greenville Solar Farm changed the landscape.

๐Ÿ’ณ ๐Ÿ’ธSaving Money ๐Ÿ’ฐ ๐Ÿ’ท

I am not a fan of ESG Investing as it’s not well diversified. I prefer index-funds and other tax-advantaged ways of saving. Why I am concerned about saving enough for retirement, even though I’m in my late 30s. We as a nation should save more, consume less. I like the idea of carbon tax to replace capital gains taxes to discourage consumption.

๐Ÿฅฆ ๐ŸŽMission Fifty & Being Healthier ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿง

I am now officially in my 40s! I am building to a better life in my 50s, which means getting up early, walking a lot, saying no to cake and yes to more fruit. In many ways, the forties are an awesome time to be alive.

And eating healthy for less without losing sleep over arsenic. And I don’t think we should subsidize unhealthy habits. How I got started in eating healther. Meals are too focused on meat and carbs due to how we describe them, maybe I eat too many bananas in the office, what to eat while camping, worry more about salt then GMOs, eat more beans. Do spend extra for farmers market peaches, especially doughnut peaches and plums. Consider ethnic supermarkets. Thinking about how to make a healthier macaroni and cheese, spinach-mackeral-pasta salad, quick-cook biscuits and whole-wheat bread. That said, too many recipes are junk food crap. Okay in moderation is not okay. The fact that I’m thinner is not a sign I’m dying.

A few years back I decided to explore my mental illness with therapy, thinking about why I have so much anxiety and how many of my values are rational or just thinking too much rednecks’ burn barrels and how much of a throwaway society we live in. Do I want to change?

I’ve learned to care less about the world, and focus more on myself. Maybe I am happier as I am now, saving and investing a lot towards owning my own land, where I don’t have to deal with all the bullshit of modern life.

Mission Fifty: Getting to the point where I own my own land. ๐Ÿšœ

Fire Tower

October 12, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Columbus Day ! โ›ต ๐Ÿ‚ Cloudy but no rain yet and 43 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜๏ธ There is a east-southeast breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The skies will clear tomorrow around 5 pm.

Cool but not a bad autumn morning. โ˜๏ธ More sun though would be nice. It was a nice weekend ๐Ÿ‚ and I sort of wish I had headed out of town but I did get some nice hiking in at Hand Hollow Conservation Area and the State Forest of the same name, followed by a visit to the Ooms Conservation Area, an open fields birding area ๐Ÿฆ above a water supply pond near the Ooms Dairy ๐Ÿฎ in Columbia County. Speiglton Lake is quite pretty little Reservoir nestled in the hills although certainly parts of Hands Hollow were noisy from the Lebanon Valley Speedway and being race day. ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ Looked like a good place to hunt on the state forest, as the woods is fairly thin and full of wildlife ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒ and it’s less known as a newer state forest. Outside of Speiglton Lake there aren’t a lot of trails but most of the woods is quite accessible as long as you have a good map ๐Ÿ—บ to stay on public property.

After hiking I bought stuff to make good baked Macoroni and Cheese ๐Ÿง€ and it came out pretty good, washed down with a bunch of beer ๐Ÿป. And I have meals ๐Ÿด for all week and I might end up freezing it in smaller containers for more food later on so I’m not just eating the same thing over and over this week.

Columbia County with all those monied folks in those old houses is quite a trip. ๐Ÿฃ So many houses with Black Lives Matters signs and Biden Harris lawn signs. I had to joke to myself that there are more people with Black Lives Matters signs then there are black people in that part of the county. ๐Ÿคจ I bet though running a dairy in that area must be a bit challenging with the gentrifiers finding every reason to complain. ๐Ÿ„

Columbus Day ๐Ÿ‚โ›ต will have a slight chance of rain between 2pm and 3pm. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 53 degrees at 1pm. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 2nd. Southeast wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies. The high last year was 66 degrees. The record high of 85 was set in 1954. There was a dusting of snow in 1904.โ„

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:42 pm with sun having an altitude of 39.8ยฐ from the due south horizon (-31.1ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 7.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 5:41 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (254ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (260ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 6:19 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 56 seconds with dusk around 6:45 pm, which is one minute and 39 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 7:20 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 52 degrees. There will be a east-southeast breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 11 hours and 11 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 48 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will rain, mainly after 1am. Patchy fog after 2am. ๐ŸŒง Low of 49 degrees at 9pm. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 27th. East wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 42 degrees. The record low of 24 occurred back in 1981.

So yeah its not going to be a real nice day. ๐ŸŒฅ I’m going over to John Wolcott house to do more filming tonight ๐Ÿ“ผ, we will see how things go. With work I’m not sure if I’ll have much free time to get over there and go through his files ๐Ÿ“‚ though until November.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 55. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 56. Typical average high for the weekend is 59 degrees.

I would really like to get out of town this weekend โ›บ but I have to make sure I have good cell service ๐Ÿ“ฑ for work. I’m still leaning towards Madison County at this point. Things could change – some forecasts are more pessimistic especially for Friday but I’ll continue to watch it an decide. Turns out that weather wise the past weekend would have been nicer. โ˜€๏ธโ›ต๐Ÿ‚

Looking ahead, there are 7 weeks until Cyber Monday ๐Ÿ›๏ธ and Beaver Moon ๐Ÿป ๐ŸŒ• when the sun will be setting at 4:23 pm with dusk at 4:54 pm (Standard Time). On that day in 2019, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 33 and 19 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 42 degrees. We hit a record high of 67 back in 1933. Probably have to turn the heat back on by then. โ™จ

Getting Campfire Going

April 24, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Next Friday is May 1st. Been such a cold spring it’s hard to imagine that next week is May. It’s only just starting to green up in Albany. ๐ŸŒธ Rain and 41 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜” There is a north breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. 0.14 inches of rain is expected before it ends around 4 pm. Not a lot of rain predicted and Saturday will be nice.

Coffee โ˜• and wild berry muffins this morning for breakfast. Also cream cheese. It was a pretty decent breakfast not as heavy or labor intensive as making eggs ๐Ÿณ like I did yesterday. No birds ๐Ÿฆ out the window to give the middle finger too. I do get a laugh ๐Ÿ˜‚ out of giving the bird to the birds. I’m sure my neighbors think I’m nuts.

Wish it was nicer out but I really shouldn’t complain much ๐ŸŒป– I am sure hot and humid days are right around the corner. It will kind of suck this year if state park swimming ๐ŸŠ pools are closed because of Coronavirus.

Today will rain likely, mainly before noon. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 53 degrees at 4pm. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 4th. North wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 61 degrees. The record high of 81 was set in 2001. 1.2 inches of snow fell back in 1967.โ„

Kind of a dreary day for sure. ๐Ÿ’ฆ April Showers bring May flowers although they’ll be no tulip festival ๐ŸŒท this year not that I ever went to that except for tabling for Save the Pine Bush a few years ago. But it’s nice when things green up except of course for the black flies.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:54 pm with sun having an altitude of 60.4ยฐ from the due south horizon (-10.4ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:10 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (282ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (289ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:48 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 4 seconds with dusk around 8:18 pm, which is one minute and 9 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent ๐ŸŒ’ Moon in the west-northwest (282ยฐ) at an altitude of 11ยฐ from the horizon, 247,483 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:55 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 49 degrees. There will be a north-northwest breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 49 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 38 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 36 degrees at 4am. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 12th. Northwest wind 3 to 5 mph. In 2019, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 38 degrees. The record low of 23 occurred back in 1965.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 63 degrees at 4pm. Typical for tomorrow. Light and variable wind. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 66 degrees. The record high of 89 was set in 2009. 0.3 inches of snow fell back in 1928.โ„

Sounds like a remarkably nice spring day. โ˜€ I have to get early up tomorrow but I should have most of the day to enjoy spending in the woods. ๐ŸŒฟ I’m thinking about hiking in the afternoon and maybe hammock camping โ›บ in a state forest, although it might be a bit chilly and wet by morning. I think the rain is coming early come Sunday.

Looking ahead to Sunday, rain likely. Cloudy, with a high near 52. East wind 3 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. Typical average high for the weekend is 63 degrees. ๐Ÿ’ฆ Definitely going to be a real dreary day. I’m going to have to get some more videos to watch from the library Wi-Fi and some more data to make up maps.

Paid my rent or actually the bank did ๐Ÿฆ as next week is May. Hopefully enough of my neighbors are too and my landlord isn’t going bankrupt. ๐Ÿก He does have a nice house over the river but who knows what his cash flow situation is like. I know a lot of out of work people aren’t paying rent. I also had to cancel the double bill for my car insurance – they kindly sent me a second bill for the time period with a later deadline and a reduced payment – but it meant that I cancel that from auto bill pay as I had already paid my bill for the next six months. ๐Ÿ’ต

I am still waiting on my stimulus check to arrive ๐Ÿ’ฐ but because I didn’t owe or get anything refunded from the federal government this year, I don’t think they have my information on file and the last I checked their website wasn’t working. I was hoping it would come sooner rather than later so I could use it partially to buy index ๐Ÿ“‡ funds when the market is still cheap. I’m young I’m not phased much about the sluggish performance of the market lately. I do think at some point Coronavirus will kill who it’s going to kill (hopefully not me or loved ones) and then we’ll move forward. Ten years from now I expect the markets to be a lot stronger and then I can buy land. ๐Ÿšœ

As previously noted, next Friday is May 1st ๐Ÿ•Š when the sun will be setting at 7:55 pm with dusk at 8:26 pm. On that day in 2019, we had cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 56 and 42 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 65 degrees. We hit a record high of 86 back in 2001.
