January 29, 2022 – Looking Ahead This Week

Another cold night on tap ๐ŸŒฌ

Today was cold. Tonight looks like continued cold.

I know they are saying zero degrees, but I’m sure it will probably drop well below it if it’s anything like recent days. I turned down the heat for a while today, but it got cold quickly in my apartment and figured I better turn it up before bed and open the cabinets under the sink to be safe. Needless to say, I skipped my evening walk.

The good news is mid-week we will have a decent warm-up although it’s not expected to last real long. But with the rain, it might feel colder then what it actually is but should at least save on the heat a bit and melt away a lot of the snow. But it doesn’t seem like the warming trend is coming soon, but maybe it will mean that Ground Hog won’t see his shadow, for whatever that is worth.

Weather Update – November 17, 2021

Another fairly cool and cloudy day for this GIS Day. โ›…

Probably not going to be a good day for looking at satellite ๐Ÿ›ฐ photos though maybe Terra with its morning imagery will be relatively cloud free.

The morning was a bit nicer than it is now with the clouds โ˜๏ธ pushing in and the breeze picking up ๐Ÿšถ as I walk the Plaza but it is November and that’s to be expected. They’ve gotten a bit of snow ๐ŸŒจ in the mountains but not so much locally. Looks like it won’t be too much longer before the ice rink is open on the Plaza.

Saturday I will probably stay in town ๐Ÿฆ maybe walk out to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center for some bird watching. Lately though it seems like kind of a lull for birds as the seasons change.

Sunday morning I will be having the new tires put on my truck โšซ and then I’m going out to the folks house for Sunday lunch rather than dinner as I don’t like driving home in the dark. ๐Ÿฒ It’s just so difficult on those rural roads with so much traffic coming in the opposing direction. ๐Ÿš˜

Monday I am getting my truck inspected ๐Ÿ”ง so I will need to check the lights and replace any missing bulbs, but I don’t anticipate any problems once I have the new tires on.

A week from Thursday is Thanksgiving ๐Ÿฆƒ. I know the other day we were already discussing the holiday party at work, although I think it will be toned down this year due to the COVID-19.

Despite being vaccinated ๐Ÿ’‰ for some time now, I’m concerned about COVID, mainly because my friend who is an expert on such things and predicted how covid would play out over the past few years has been accurate and still is alarmed. โฐ I’ve thought about getting the booster – I’m either now or soon but I’m not sure it’s necessary. It’s not totally free in the sense that I don’t want to feel sick ๐Ÿคฎ for a day, and it seems like the initial shots are enough based on NYS Health Department research report ๐Ÿ“– I read.

Good Morning – October 9, 2021

Good morning! Happy Columbus Day Weekend ๐Ÿ‚ !

Partly cloudy and 54 degrees at the Catskill Scenic Trail. ๐ŸŒฅ There is a east-southeast breeze at 9 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 49 degrees. Beautiful autumn day. The skies will clear Monday around 5 pm.

Yesterday, I hiked Bearpen Mountain for the first time. I had been there previously tried a few back but I missed the driveway to the parking area as I lacked a good map of the area. ๐Ÿ—บ The track on All Trails was pretty good and that got me started. Ironically, once you find the trailhead, the trail is a gated gravel road, in pretty good maintenence – looks like part of it was rebuilt and rerouted after Hurricane Irene. ๐Ÿ…ฟ The best views are to the north and west, definitely don’t stop after the first view, take the trail north across the summit to additional views. ๐Ÿž

I wanted to also do North Bearpen but time was tight and the trail across the col was soggy unlike the gated road up Bearpen. ๐Ÿ‚ Good color on Bearpen but some of the views were less colorful. Autumn is late this year, we’ve yet to have a good frost. ๐Ÿ“ธ Photos to be posted Monday or Tuesday.

I got to Betty Brook fairly early last night as I wanted to have time to get a campsite should the first one I wanted be taken. โ›บ I got set up – it was a beautiful night – the kind of night you don’t even need a long shirt for. Something more akin to August then October but the sun still set early. Despite the threat of clouds it actually was a very starry night. โœจ I would have liked to have laid back in the hammock but I dropped one of the straps in the dark and couldn’t find it until morning. I thought I had left the strap home. Maybe tonight will also be good for laying in the hammock.

There was some litter ๐Ÿšฎ on the other side of Betty Brook from the summer when somebody had set up targets for blasting. Just some cans and paper targets ๐ŸŽฏ but I didn’t want to look at the garbage all weekend so I put on my muck boots ๐Ÿ‘ข and crossed the creek. Picked up the litter and proceeded to slip on a log ๐Ÿand get completely soaked from head to toe and had to change. Fortunately it was a very mild evening so I just toweled off and changed.

Today I’m hiking the Catskill Scenic Trail south of Stamford. It’s a nice day with more sun โ˜€ than I expected. There was a slight delay getting down here due to a detour from an auto crash on NY 10 but I still got an early start. ๐Ÿ“ธ I misplaced the battery ๐Ÿ”‹ for the camera but was able to find another one so I’ll be able to get pictures today. One thing I’m is I’m a bit disappointed with the scenery here compared to the other part of the rail trail but I think it will be better father south I go. I’ll drive up Utsaythana later and through the township valley which is always beautiful in the autumn.

Good Morning – July 14, 2021

Good morning! Happy National Nude Day ๐Ÿ‘ฑ!

No calf jackets for you today. ๐Ÿฎ Honestly I think you’ll want to wait until the weekend when it’s really hot to go skinny dipping. ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿป‍โ™‚๏ธ But actually after Friday, going to cool down a bit.

Cloudy, damp and 68 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜๏ธThere is a south breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 67 degrees. Definitely a muggy mid summer morning. The skies will clear around 10 am.

Got toilet paper ๐Ÿงป and went to the Pine Bush hearing last night. ๐ŸŒฒIt’s worthwhile to raise your voice and let the government know your concerns about continuing development in the Pine Bush regardless how much effect it might have. ๐Ÿ‘ฅ

Out for the morning walk. ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป I see they are adding a cross walk signal on Van Dyke near the High School ๐Ÿšธ. I have mixed feelings about it, at least on the weekends another beg button ๐Ÿ”ณ is more likely to just slow pedestrians down.

Definitely a bit muggy this morning ๐Ÿ˜ฐ although part of it is in wearing jeans ๐Ÿ‘– and I’m moving as time is always tight when I got a bus ๐Ÿš to catch in a bit. But once I get home I’ll take a shower and then bus will be air conditioned, as I wear my muzzle and go to work.

I still need to get the photos from this weekend ๐Ÿ“ธ off my camera, but I’ll try to upload them today or tomorrow when I’m in the office. I think my camera is still in my truck.

July 7, 2021 Morning

Good morning! What day is it? Hump Day, of course. ๐Ÿช Or maybe not because it’s the dog ๐Ÿถ days of summer and Monday was a holiday and I’m off Friday. Next Wednesday is National Nude Day ๐Ÿ‘ฑ. Summer after all is a much better time for skinny dipping than winter. Partly sunny and 69 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. The dew point is 65 degrees. The muggy weather ends Sunday around noontime. ๐Ÿ˜“

Today is going to be another hot ol summer day, ๐Ÿ– although the thunderstorms โ›ˆ should provide some relief later. I didn’t think it was that warm out so far but I can find the warmth walking in the sun โ˜€. I didn’t do my evening or for that matter morning walk ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป yesterday, mainly because it was hot. Actually I didn’t do the morning walk yesterday because I stayed over at my parents house ๐Ÿก and had breakfast there before work.

I didn’t catch the earlier bus ๐Ÿš in but that’s fine, as I am not expecting a busy morning and usually I stay a bit late in the office ๐Ÿข as the evening bus without the express or rush hour service. I just dropped something in the kitchen and I had to clean it up. Also I’m having occasional issues with the toilet ๐Ÿšฝ always flushing perfectly. It’s always one issue or another with my apartment. It’s inexpensive, under 10% of my pre-tax income so I can’t complain much. Going to be another hot ol summer day but the air conditioning is nice.

Today will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 2pm. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 87 degrees at 5pm. Three degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 72 at 4pm. Light and variable wind becoming southwest around 6 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. It was humid. The high last year was 85 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1988.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:01 pm with sun having an altitude of 69.9° from the due south horizon (-0.9° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:54 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (295°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (302°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:36 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 25 seconds with dusk around 9:09 pm, which is 22 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:55 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 79 degrees. The dew point will be 67 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 10 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 3 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 61 degrees at 5am. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around July 2nd. Maximum dew point of 69 at 6pm. North wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies. It became very sticky as the night progressed. It got down to 73 degrees. The record low of 43 occurred back in 1969.

On this day in 1981, U.S. President Ronald Reagan appoints Sandra Day O’Connor to become the first female member of the Supreme Court of the United States. ๐Ÿฅช That’s almost as cool as sliced bread, which is sold for the first time by the Chillico the Baking Company in 1921. As long as it’s not all moldy like that sandwich I bit into yesterday.

Looks like a great weekend up north. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 79. Maximum dew point of 63 at 7am. Sunday, a chance of showers after 2pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 82. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 64 at 8pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 84 degrees.

Maybe some thunderstorms โ›ˆ on Friday, but after my eye appointment is done ๐Ÿ‘€ I’m heading to Piseco-Powley Road. ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿป‍โ™‚๏ธ I have the day off.. Probably spend much of the weekend at the Potholers. Monday and Tuesday probably work from Spectulator and Lake Pleasant. Got to take advantage of remote work ๐Ÿ’ป as it’s quickly winding down.

After this weekend there is one more weekend before summer vacation. ๐Ÿ– I might go to Schoharie Valley for a long weekend if it’s nice and the Mine Kill Pool is open. I have quite a bit of time to use, although I will need a week for my summer vacation and then a week for an autumn trip to West Virginia or maybe somewhere else.

I also need to decide if I need work on my truck before vacation. ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐Ÿ”ง As the tires wear down, they are getting progressively louder. I still think I need new struts and tires on the truck, but I’m putting that off until the fall. I guess for now I could rotate the tires, but I’m a bit hesitant when I’m planning to replace them come the fall. I do need to decide if It’s time for an oil change, as I don’t think the shop used synthetic last time, although I haven’t gone that many miles since the last change. But it would be kind of nice get both the tires rotated and oil changed before vacation to be safe. I’ll have to think about it more, as neither is essential but might be good. The tires are annoying, but I want to wear them down more before replacing this autumn. Also want to sand down the rust and slap on a coating of rust-resistance paint at some point.

As previously noted, next Wednesday is National Nude Day ๐Ÿ‘ฑ when the sun will be setting at 8:31 pm with dusk at 9:05 pm. On that day in 2020, we had mostly sunny with a thunderstorm and temperatures between 84 and 67 degrees. Good day for skinny dipping maybe in the House Pond Campsite swimming hole. Typically, the high temperature is 84 degrees. We hit a record high of 99 back in 1995.

Across Powley Place

July 6, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. ๐Ÿข Back to work after the long weekend although I’m taking off Friday for an extra short week. Two weeks to Ugly Truck Day ๐Ÿšš. Cloudy and 69 degrees in Dormansville, NY. โ˜ There is a south breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 66 degrees. The skies will clear around 7 pm. Going to be another real hot and humid day, although I think the clouds and thunderstorms should help break the heat.

Last night I stayed over at my parents house in the truck camper โ›บ and they made breakfast which pretty good. Drove home, had to slam on the brakes twice ๐ŸฆŒ as there was a lot of deer on the road. I fished at Lawson Lake ๐ŸŽฃ with my feet off the dock until I big snapper swam by. ๐Ÿข I’m a scardy cat, what’s the worse thing a big snapper can do? They don’t bite unless you attack them or really scare them and they prefer to flee, especially in water where they tend to be quite fast. ๐Ÿ’ฆ I also went hiking and bird watching – bunch of Ruffled Grouse on Sickle Hill Road along with song sparrows, Gold Finch, red wing blackbirds along the way. I did a little fishing ๐ŸŽฃ at White Birch Pond but the bugs were bad! ๐Ÿœ

Today will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 10am. Some storms could be severe, with heavy rain. Partly sunny and hot ๐ŸŒฉ, with a high of 90 degrees at 3pm. Six degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 70 at 9am. Heat index values as high as 95. South wind 8 to 16 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 88 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1886.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:01 pm with sun having an altitude of 70.2ยฐ from the due south horizon (-0.8ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:54 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (295ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (302ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:37 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 25 seconds with dusk around 9:10 pm, which is 19 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:55 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 83 degrees. The dew point will be 68 degrees. There will be a west breeze at 9 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 10 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 58 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of thunderstorms, mainly before 7pm. Some of the storms could be severe. Partly cloudy ๐ŸŒฉ, with a low of 66 degrees at 5am. Four degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 68 at 6pm. Southwest wind 5 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It became humid as the night progressed. It got down to 69 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1979.

On this day in 1947, The AK-47 goes into production in the Soviet Union. ๐Ÿ”ซ Even after almost seven decades, the model and its variants remain the most popular and widely used assault rifles in the world because of their substantial reliability under harsh conditions, low production costs compared to contemporary Western weapons, availability in virtually every geographic region and ease of use.

Weekend forecast is definitely looking up. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 80. Maximum dew point of 65 at 7am. Sunday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 81. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 64 at 7pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 84 degrees.

I got to take off Friday for my eye doctor appointment ๐Ÿ‘€ and then head up to the Adirondacks. I think I can leave directly from the eye doctor to the Adirondacks. I’m sure they’ll want to dilate my pupils but too bad as I want to get up to camp โ›บ so I can spend the balance of the day in the Adirondacks. Only two weekends until summer vacation, it’s coming quickly.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Ugly Truck Day ๐Ÿšš when the sun will be setting at 8:27 pm with dusk at 9:00 pm. On that day in 2020, we had hot, humid, mostly sunny and temperatures between 87 and 69 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 84 degrees. We hit a record high of 97 back in 1991.

North West

June 30, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Where did June go? I know Trump supporters are holding their breath, hoping that in a month massive fraud will be uncovered and Trump will be reinstated as president. I’m guessing that is probably rather unlikely. Maybe 2024. Two weeks to National Nude Day ๐Ÿ‘ฑ. With the heat, sleeping buck naked or at least in your boxers is recommended. Partly sunny and 76 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒž Calm wind. The dew point is 71 degrees. The muggy weather ends Saturday around 3 am. ๐Ÿ˜“

The air conditioning feels nice on the bus ๐Ÿš, although at this point I’m getting used to the heat and humidity. It’s hard for me to remember such a long stretch of weather with such high dew points and humidity, I feel you have to go back to around 2012 or 2013. ๐Ÿ˜ฐ Yesterday I went to the store and got lots of frozen fruit ๐Ÿ“ and then in the evening went down to the library. It’s nice things are getting back to normal. That said, I have mixed feelings about working in the office more. ๐Ÿ’ป The air conditioning is nice but it sure is a lot more flexible to work remotely especially from the Adirondacks.

Today will have showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 4pm. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 89 degrees at 1pm. Six degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 72 at 10am. Heat index values as high as 95. Light and variable wind becoming west 5 to 9 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, which became thunderstorm by afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 81 degrees. The record high of 98 was set in 1964.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:00 pm with sun having an altitude of 70.5° from the due south horizon (-0.3° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:55 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (296°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (303°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:38 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 27 seconds with dusk around 9:11 pm, which is 6 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:58 pm. At sunset, look out for thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 79 degrees. The dew point will be 68 degrees. There will be a southwest breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 15 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 36 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have showers and thunderstorms likely before 2am, then a slight chance of showers between 2am and 3am, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 3am. Mostly cloudy , with a low of 70 degrees at 3am. Nine degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 69 at 6pm. Southwest wind around 6 mph becoming calm after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2020, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became rain by the early hours of the morning. It was humid. It got down to 64 degrees. The record low of 45 occurred back in 1978.

On this day in 1971, Ohio ratifies the 26th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, reducing the voting age to 18, thereby putting the amendment into effect. ๐Ÿ“œ โŽ Also in 1934, The Night of the Long Knives, Adolf Hitler’s violent purge of his political rivals in Germany, takes place. ๐Ÿ—ก Fortunately, we only have obnoxious rhetoric to that impact in our country today.

The weekend forecast is improving. ๐ŸŒž Saturday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 73. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Maximum dew point of 61 at 10am. Sunday, independence Day, a chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 76. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Monday when the holiday is observed, looking at a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly sunny, with a high near 84. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Typical average high for the weekend is 83 degrees.

Do I end up going up to the Adirondacks after all? ๐Ÿ• It’s an interesting question for sure. I might end up staying up north through Tuesday then, and working up in Speculator with the forecast improving. Do I do Piseco-Powley Road? Or somewhere else. The Green Mountains are another possiblity, or I am considering tent camping somewhere up in the woods in Schoharie. There are many options for sure, although I do have to worry about sites going quickly on Friday.

Still chewing over what I am going to do about my counseling appointment next week, ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍โš•๏ธ but I’m tempted to cancel it and postpone indefinitely as I want to do other things at this point. I think I’ve spent enough money on this at this point. ๐Ÿ’ธ I do have to be in town next week on Friday morning though for my eye appointment ๐Ÿ‘€ but then I can decide what I want to do for the balance of the day — I might take the afternoon off if I want to head out of town.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until National Nude Day ๐Ÿ‘ฑ when the sun will be setting at 8:31 pm with dusk at 9:05 pm. On that day in 2020, we had mostly sunny skies , thunderstorm and temperatures between 84 and 67 degrees. You know, general summer weather. Etc. Typically, the high temperature is 84 degrees. We hit a record high of 99 back in 1995.
