Good evening! Cold, cloudy, windy around 20 degrees at the One Commerce Plaza but feels much colder waiting for the bus. โ„ There is a west-northwest breeze at 14 mph. 🍃. The current wind chill is 7. There are 4 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at Sunday around 11 am. 🌡๏ธ

The Pine Bush Dinner 🌲 was good but I started feeling so exhausted and achy by the end of it. 😴 Maybe it just was the thought of waiting outside for the bus in the cold around 9 pm. So I left early. It’s not like I haven’t heard the same old music 🎶 acts before, after 15 years or more of involvement the holiday parties all start to seem alike. Cavagahan’s granddaughter is a very talented folk singer. 🎸 I sure hope that the Lyme isn’t coming back, making me sick – I feel so awful by the end of the evening. 🐜 Only have a day or two of the doxycycline left and then if I sicker after the holidays I’ll have to visit my doctor 😷 again.

Once I get home I’ll probably take my doxycycline 💊 and I will probably retire to bed. I’m hoping after some sleep I’ll be feeling better. I left the heat turned up before I left for work so I expect it should be comfortable and warm when I get home. 🏡 I’m glad the doxycycline is almost done, as it’s a pain to remember even if it no longer makes me feel sick in the morning.

Tonight will have a slight chance of snow showers before 1am. Partly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 5 degrees at 6am. 15 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around -10 at 6am; Northwest wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 16 degrees. The record low of -13 occurred back in 1973.

Tonight will have a Waning Crescent Moon 🌘 with 39% illuminated with the moon rising at 11:40 pm. The moon will rise at 12:00 am. The New Moon is next Wednesday. The is on Wednesday night. The sun will rise at 7:20 am with the first light at 6:47 am, which is 39 seconds later than yesterday. 🌄 Tonight will have 14 hours and 57 minutes of darkness, an increase of 15 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 18 degrees at 2pm. 17 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around -10 at 6am; Northwest wind 11 to 14 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 37 degrees. The record high of 54 was set in 1895. 7.8 inches of snow fell back in 2008.โ„

A bitterly cold โ„ day tomorrow. Not sure if I’m going to walk down to the express bus 🚍 or take the local in. I really do like the walk but not if that wind is really biting like tonight.

I ordered an USB 18650 battery 🔋 charger on Amazon today and are going to pick up an extra pair of batteries to use with my LED lantern 🏮 mom and dad are getting me for Christmas. I probably eventually will also get an 18650 based LED flashlight though my existing ones work fine and truth is I could use ordinary NiMH rechargable batteries in my existing flashlights too.

I am looking forward to my camping trip in two weeks โ›บ but I wonder how muddy it will be. It might be above freezing in the day time which might mean not a lot of snow but a lot of mud. I’m still thinking about the Finger Lakes National Forest but if it looks like I’ll only be able to camp for three nights due to the weather I might stay somewhere closer to home.

I do need to test my propane camp lantern 🏮 that I cleaned this weekend. I’m thinking it will work well now but I haven’t hooked up mantles or tried it out. I’m trying to figure out what I can hang it from to test it out back, not sure if I have a good place near my apartment to string a rope. I’ve thought about getting one of those lantern posts that people use but I’ve heard their unstable especially when the tank is near empty and often break or bend when dropped.

I have to reorder my contact lens 👀 online. My prescription is probably expired, actually it is but I know they don’t actually stop you from buying it online. I would have ordered them last summer when I had a valid script but I knew worse comes to worse my insurance now partially pays for yearly exams for contacts. That said, I hate going to my eye doctor, they’re jerks, always trying to upsell you and charge you for extras. 👓 I’m sure they work on a commission and low profit margins but the local place I usually go to is the absolute worse. I’ve been to other eye places but both of them have subsequently closed.

I often think some of the zero waste โ™ป stuff is kind of silly but I guess it’s probably good behavior if you live in a city and are an urbanite. I’d rather focus on plainly consuming less, dumping the occasional apple core in with the gut pile or manure pile 💩 on my land, burn the majority of whatever I buy that is packaged 🔥 and recycle the cans and glass as a last resort. โ™ป I want to use wood for heat and a minimal solar system for small electrical loads and a few lights but nothing big and fancy. I guess I’m not into saving the earth 🌎 but doing what is right for myself and my land. I want to see wild land remain wild 🐺 and not turned into luxury parks for the ulta wealth. I don’t see much difference in what the zero waste folks are proposing and overall waste generation 🚮 – they’re not willing to attack consumerism, take out food 🍲 or waste more generally in our lives. As it stands right now, I buy a lot in bulk and a lot of frozen fruit and vegetables do my actual food waste is minuscule and most of the plastic wrappers probably get burnt or something like that. 🔥

Good evening! Partly cloudy and 29 degrees in Delmar, NY. 🎑 Breezy, ๏ธ17 mph breeze from the west-northwest 🌬 with gusts up to 28 mph 💨💨💨. The current wind chill is 17. There are 1.5 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at tomorrow around noontime. 🌡๏ธ

For a while this evening it was pretty bitterly cold with the wind. 🍃 It seems like the wind has died down a bit. I went to the Save the Pine Bush Benefit, 🦋 had a Butterfly Lager that was well not the greatest lager ever 🍺 for $7 but Save the Pine Bush got $2 plus I put in the cover charge and I bought a bunch of raffle tickets. 🎫

Very packed event when I left at 9 pm as I have to work tomorrow, didn’t want to drink more than one beer 🍻 and then have to drive home on those narrow city streets. 🚨 Drunk driving laws are so strict these days, and the rare times when I go to the bar, I usually take the bus home 🚍 but not many run on Sunday.

Parking 🅿 wasn’t bad down there, as I parked down a block from the bar and walked 🚶 up there, and with some careful route planning 🌐I managed to avoid all of the red light camera. 🚦 It’s not that hard to avoid them if you take the side streets and plan appropriately to avoid those intersections.

Music 🎶 was kind of loud and not my style 🎸 with all the old folks pulling their hearing aids. 👵I was quite happy to leave and protect my ears 👂 as I do enough damage listening to the moldy oldies and country western with my headphones 🎧jacked up to loud. But the hipsters and others there really digged the act and hopefully will bring a lot of funds in for the battle against developing the Pine Bush.🦋

Tonight will have a slight chance of snow showers before midnight. I was worried 😯 about the roads as it started to snow around five but they were fine. Black ice in parking lots but with the wind they were dry. Partly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 22 degrees at 6am. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 14th. Maximum wind chill around 16 at 12am; West wind 12 to 17 mph decreasing to 6 to 11 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2018, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 28 degrees. The record low of -11 occurred back in 1917.

Tonight will have a Waning Gibbous Moon 🌖 with 72% illuminated. I always find those waning gibbous moons to look a bit creepy, like part of the moon is missing. The moon will set at 11:02 am. The Last Quarter Moon is on Tuesday night with partly cloudy skies. The is on Wednesday night. The sun will rise at 7:18 am with the first light at 6:46 am, which is 44 seconds later than yesterday. 🌄 Tonight will have 14 hours and 56 minutes of darkness, an increase of 29 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 33 degrees at 1pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 23rd. West wind around 5 mph becoming light and variable in the afternoon. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 36 degrees. The record high of 55 was set in 1971. 9.5 inches of snow fell back in 1981.โ„

I decided to park on the driveway as I don’t think we are going to get enough snow for the landlord to plow โ„ but if he does he can plow around my truck. It’s possible we get a few inches on Tuesday but I don’t see it being a big snow event locally but it could cause delays on the commute.

I got grocery shopping so I should be good for the week. 🏪 I also have a half tank of gas in the truck โ›ฝ so I should be good for now but I’ll need more fuel if I decide to go to the Adirondacks after the Save the Pine Bush Hike on Saturday. We aren’t going to do the Reszin Adams filming 📹 on Saturday so I’ll have the afternoon free if the weather is nice enough for a night on the East Branch. Depends on how cold, icy and snowy it is up north. โ„ Otherwise I’ll just wait another weekend for my trip to the Finger Lakes National Forest. โ›บ I’m hoping that long weekend is nice and relatively snow free.

In four weeks on January 12 the sun will be setting at 4:43 pm,🌄 which is 20 minutes and 33 seconds later then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had partly cloudy skies and temperatures between 26 and 12 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 30 and 14 degrees. The record high of 63 degrees was set back in 2018.

December 15, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Bill of Rights Day 📜! The constitution is only as good as the people appointed to enforce it. 🐽 Otherwise it’s just scrap 📄 good for absorbing the pee and poop 💩 in a hog barn. Next Sunday is Days are Getting Longer โ˜€๏ธ. Mornings will still be getting darker but at least we will be accelerating the sunlight in the evening enough to make it less dark. Mostly cloudy and 41 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… Breezy, ๏ธ16 mph breeze from the west 🌬 with gusts up to 28 mph 💨💨💨. The current wind chill is 26. Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 4 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Today will have a slight chance of rain and snow showers, mainly between 1pm and 2pm. Partly sunny, with a temperature falling to around 31 by 5pm. โ˜€ Windy, with a west wind 16 to 21 mph increasing to 23 to 28 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 47 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 48 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 2015. 8.2 inches of snow fell back in 1968.โ„

I was originally thinking about going to the store 🏬 early today but early often becomes late on the weekends. 😴 I am thinking now maybe my best bet is to stop at the grocery store on the way to the Save the Pine Bush benefit and get gas at the same time. I think if I take Washington Avenue and North Lake I can avoid most of the Red Light Cameras 🚦 and it’s not far out of the way.

The sun will set at 4:22 pm with dusk around 4:54 pm, which is 13 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies 🌃 and temperatures around 33 degrees. Maximum wind chill around 12 at 12am; Breezy, with a west wind 19 to 24 mph decreasing to 5 to 10 mph after midnight. On December 15, 1967, the Silver Bridge collapsed under the weight of rush-hour traffic, resulting in the deaths of 46 people. 🌉 Two of the victims were never found. The Silver Bridge was an eyebar-chain suspension bridge built in 1928 and named for the color of its aluminum paint. The bridge carried U.S. Route 35 over the Ohio River, connecting Point Pleasant, West Virginia, and Gallipolis, Ohio. Investigation of the wreckage pointed to the cause of the collapse being the failure of a single eyebar in a suspension chain, due to a small defect 0.1 inches (2.5 mm) deep. Analysis showed that the bridge was carrying much heavier loads than it had originally been designed for and had been poorly maintained. The collapsed bridge was replaced by the Silver Memorial Bridge, which was completed in 1969.

Also, today in 2000, was an the end of an era at the infamous Chernobyl Power Plant. 🔱Reactor No. 4 was the site of the Chernobyl disaster in 1986, and the power plant is now within a large restricted area known as the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. Both the zone and the former power plant are administered by the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management. โ˜ข๏ธ The three remaining reactors remained operational after the accident; all three were eventually shut down by 2000, and the plant remains in the process of decommissioning as of 2019. Nuclear clean-up is scheduled for completion in 2065.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until National Bird Day 🐧 when the sun will be setting at 4:35 pm with dusk at 5:07 pm. Birds the word! On that day in 2019, we had rain and temperatures between 40 and 29 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 31 degrees. We hit a record high of 64 back in 1950.

Wind and Rain Shelter I put up this weekend

December 11, 2019 Night

Good evening! Snow flurries and 27 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ„ Breezy, ๏ธ16 mph breeze from the west 🌬 with gusts up to 28 mph 💨💨💨. The current wind chill is 15. It’s a fairly decent evening outside with the moonlight until the wind picks up. There are 3.5 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at Friday around 9 am. 🌡๏ธ

I went over to John Wolcott house 🏡 for a while 🔎and then I went for my evening walk. Beautiful moonlight tonight but a bit cold with the wind. Got milk 🐮 for breakfast in the morning. Almost Over

December 8, 2019 Night

Good evening! Partly cloudy and 31 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… Breezy, ๏ธ23 mph breeze from the south 🌬 with gusts up to 36 mph 💨💨💨. The current wind chill is 17. There are 15 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at tomorrow around noontime. 🌡๏ธ

I decided with the wind 🍃, not to do my evening walk 🚶I think with the wind and dampness it would be rather cold and I did get some decent exercise in skiing 🎿 earlier today. It was nice in the Gorge. I had a nice Sunday dinner 🍲 at the folks house and then came home, folded my clothes and did more reading 📖 about Butchering. 🥩I reread part of the book again because I lost my page in the book.🔖Also a bit achy all day today, not sure if that’s the Lyme coming back but I was fine skiing and it was pretty good but tiring climbing out of the gorge. 😮

Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a low of 30 degrees at 8pm. Six degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 23rd. In 2018, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 17 degrees. The record low of -11 occurred back in 1902.

The sun will rise at 7:12 am with the first light at 6:40 am, which is 56 seconds later than yesterday. 🌄 Tonight will have 14 hours and 51 minutes of darkness, an increase of 58 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will rain, mainly after 10am. I think I can walk down to the bus tomorrow. Patchy fog after 9am. 🌧 High of 49 degrees at 6pm. 11 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 14th. South wind 7 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. Not a big wash out but still a bummer of a day for the first day of snowmobile and black powder season. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning, which became cloudy by afternoon. The high last year was 37 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 1966. 7.3 inches of snow fell back in 2009.โ„

Fixed some more bugs on the blog 🐞and I’m hopeful I’ve figured out the display glitch I’m seeing on the mobile 📱 version but that’s going to require more testing. Web page 📄 speed loading has improved dramatically at times after disabling that troublesome plug in. I also fixed the template so it says an increase or a loss of daylight like it should but has been broken for years due to my sloppy programing.

The repairs to the ski boots I made last year and the repairs to the skis are holding up good, the only thing left to repair is to install new baskets on my ski poles and I should good for doing a lot of cross country skiing now that big game hunting season done. 🎿 Some people would have just tossed my gear – the boots and ski poles are second hand from the Bethlehem Sportsmart from 20 plus years ago and at least the boots are 30 years old but they still work great with some minor gluing and repairs. 👚 On a related note, I still wear sweater vests and sweaters from high school that are two decades old now.

Don’t need to be throwing things away constantly, especially when you can use money 💵 towards a better tomorrow. I guess I got thinking about that after listening to the podcast about thrift stores. I should also look at thrift stores again – I was reading 📖 about them and how you can get some really good deals there, although I hardly need anymore clothes or stuff.🎁

Tomorrow I’m going to request December 30th off so I can possibly do a five day trip from December 28 through January 1st, depending on the weather. โ›บ I’m thinking about a winter camping trip at the Finger Lakes National Forest or maybe the Adirondacks depending on the snow โ„. I think it would be a fun way to round out the decade and I’ve been itching to get out of town for more than a day. I think there is a good chance that I’ll get the day off, especially as I don’t have clients right now per se that need covering.

In four weeks on January 5 the sun will be setting at 4:35 pm,🌄 which is 13 minutes and 58 seconds later then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had rain and temperatures between 40 and 29 degrees. Wind and Rain Shelter I put up this weekend

December 8, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Sunday. Frigid start to the morning but very sunny. Next Sunday is Bill of Rights Day 📜. Tear it up and it makes good bedding in the cow barn. 🐮 Mostly sunny and 17 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. There are 11 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ Lot less snow then six days ago for sure. Even though it’s been relatively cold the sun has done a number on the snow. ๏ธIt’s actually warming up pretty quickly and shortly I plan to head out skiing 🎿. Things will start to thaw out at around 2 pm. 🌡๏ธ

Today will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 35 degrees at 3pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 17th. Light south wind increasing to 10 to 15 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning, which became cloudy by afternoon. The high last year was 30 degrees. The record high of 58 was set in 1927. 4.3 inches of snow fell back in 2001.โ„

Should be a great morning for skiing 🎿 at least until the clouds roll in and the sky wind picks up. But for sure I’m wearing wool socks and thermal underwear this morning as it’s cold โ„. Then I got to pick up a few things at the grocery store but it’s a fairly short list. Just going to stop at Hannaford. I’m thinking about making a quick and easy pumpkin 🎃 pie for office Christmas party 🎄.

The sun will set at 4:21 pm with dusk around 4:53 pm, which is 4 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 Tomorrow is the earliest sunset of the year and it will be particularly dark evening with heavy rain โ˜” in expected tomorrow. Tonight at sunset, look for partly clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 33 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 15 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 9 minutes of daytime, an decrease of one minute over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a low of 34 degrees at 6pm. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 8th. Breezy, with a south wind 15 to 20 mph decreasing to 8 to 13 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph. Might even feel colder tonight even though the mercury is higher. In 2018, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 17 degrees. The record low of -11 occurred back in 1902. Now that’s a true sign that winter has arrived.

This is shocking and sad. In 1963, Pan Am Flight 214, โœˆ a Boeing 707, is struck by lightning โšก and crashes near Elkton, Maryland, killing all 81 people on board. That’s actually kind of a horrifying tragedy but airplanes are a lot safer now.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until National Bird Day 🐧 when the sun will be setting at 4:35 pm with dusk at 5:07 pm. Birds the word! 🐦 On that day in 2019, we had rain and temperatures between 40 and 29 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 31 degrees. We hit a record high of 64 back in 1950.

Tree

December 5, 2019 Night

Good evening! Partly cloudy and 25 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… There is a west-northwest breeze at 11 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The current wind chill is 14.ย  At times, there is a definite breeze, but it’s helping to melt away the snow. There are 17 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 2 pm. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ Some melting but they’re is still a lot of snow and more expected tomorrow into Saturday.

When I first got home, I looked out the window and saw the reflection of what appeared to be a massive fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ reflected in the window. I was a little concerned but as soon as I saw it, within a few seconds the flames disappeared. I wasn’t sure what it is, it turned out to be a barbecue grill they had just lit with a lot of lighter fluid, plus the reflection off the snow. I obviously, if I was in the country, I wouldn’t have thought twice — or even looking out back where they have a fire pit. Heck, some day when I live out in the country, I’ll have lots of fires from heating to bonfires to waste disposal.โ™ป

This evening I went to Tom Ellis presentation over hydroelectric dams and the proposed Champlain Valley power line that would run under the Hudson River. ๐Ÿ”Œ If built it would bring a lot more Quebec hydroelectric to New York City but also encourage construction ๐Ÿšง of many mega dams in New York City. Very problematic. Attendance was light as the County Legislature was having their public hearing on the straws only on request law (one of the silly anti-plastic laws that gives the greenies ๐Ÿ’š a boner ๐Ÿ†) and also a presentation on the towns road diet for Delaware Avenue ๐Ÿšง.

I fixed the code and will post the updated weather tables to the blog tomorrow. โ˜€๐ŸŒฆ Some of the data now is a year old and when I went to run the update script it didn’t work due to changes in the NOAA data report format. But I updated the fields names and its working again.

Finished off the last of the Thanksgiving dinner left overs today ๐Ÿ— after reading a post on Facebook reminding me that Thanksgiving was a week ago. I know in a few days even if I left it in the fridge things would start to mold up. Refrigeration doesn’t stop mold or bacteria growth, it only slows it. See I’m learning something from the book I’m reading on butchering livestock. ๐Ÿ”ช

Road the exercise bike ๐Ÿšฒ some more, watched some of Imagine Acre Woods YouTube, another one of those North Idaho off grid pig farmers ๐Ÿฝ who happens to know North Country Off Grid too. Quite the handlebar mustache he has but I guess if you live off grid by oil lamp, raise hogs and yaks – hairy tough cows ๐Ÿฎ – you can do what you want. He does a lot of trout fishing and camping too on his channel but that’s what you do in North Idaho I guess. Looks like fun.
