Seventeen years …

I was thinking this morning that it’s been 17 years now since I was a bushy-eyed intern for now-Congressman Joe Morelle back at the Assembly. Many years have come and gone since then, lots of hard work, fun and some tears. Soon I’ll be moving to the suburban office to take over as Director of Data Services for Assembly, though this week I’ll be training the person who is taking over my position in Research Services. Lots of Lists of Lists (LOL), as they called it back when I was working in college at Higher Education Services Corporation. But first a nice bike ride to work, probably for the only time this week.

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Mostly cloudy and 26 degrees at the in Delmar, NY. โ˜ Calm wind. Things will start to thaw out at around 11 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ Not a terrible morning for the bike ride in but I was hoping for more sun earlier on. ๐Ÿšดโ€โ™‚๏ธ That said with session tomorrow and rain on Thursday and Friday, it will likely be the last bike ride in of the week.

A new year, the same ol’ deja moo. ๐Ÿฎ Except it’s framed in a new way. As the more things change, the more things stay the same. Gotta dig out my politician suit for tomorrow, which doesn’t fit the way it once did now that I’ve lost so much weight. ๐Ÿ•ด But first today it’s riding the bike to work, ๐Ÿšฒ listening to some Oliver Anthony. ๐ŸŽค ๐ŸŽป And then time to chase the money, ๐Ÿ’ธ  because your dollar ain’t shit and it ain’t tied to no hen, as he would sing. I have a bit of an obsession with Oliver Anthony, mainly because his life is my life goal. ๐Ÿฅ… You know that $750 trailer on the 96-acres in West Virginia, though I heard he actually lives in Farmville, Virginia, down the way from Cam Edwards. But first I need to make some money, because I have to pay those bills, especially all that food ๐Ÿ and gasoline โ›ฝ I’ve been buying. At least calling off the camping trip this weekend, my propane tank is full ๐Ÿฎ so I won’t need more propane before the next time camp.

Today will be cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny โ˜, with a high of 36 degrees at 2pm. Kind of like yesterday. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 14th. Northwest wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 51 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 1890. 7.1 inches of snow fell back in 2014.โ„

While I will say I’m blessed to ride in today, ๐Ÿšดโ€โ™‚๏ธ I do wish there had been more sun. That said it is supposed to get sunnier as the day progresses ๐Ÿ˜Ž but then more clouds tonight and over the next few days. Often winter days are kind of cloudy and depressing, especially in years as mild as it’s been. As much as I like the reduced heating bills, I do not love how cloudy the days have been as of recent.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:00 pm with sun having an altitude of 24.4ยฐ from the due south horizon (-46.4ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:48 pm with the sun in the southwest (231ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (239ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:33 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 24 seconds with dusk around 5:05 pm, which is 52 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:41 pm. At sunset, look for partly sunny skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 35 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 11 minutes of daytime, an increase of 52 seconds over today.

Yesterday was New Years Eve Fondue with the family. ๐Ÿซ• It was delicious, a nice treat. I figure enjoy these special moments with the family ๐Ÿ‘ช as it’s been three weeks since I last visited my parents before the holidays when we went and saw the Nutcracker ๐Ÿ‘ฏ as both of my parents the past few weeks have been really sick with a bad cold, which is particularly serious with them getting up there in the years. ๐Ÿค’ It’s been over a decade now since Mom retired, dad turns 77 years old. ๐ŸŽ They also gave me some Christmas presents, which I always think is silly as an adult, but I think I’ll find uses for the immersion blender, and not just for smoothies, which I tend to think are kind of silly and unhealthy. ๐Ÿฅค

To make up for all that unhealthy saturated fat, ๐Ÿคฐ I decided to start my New Years Day out with a 5-mile bike ride to Five Rivers, then another 15-miles riding out to Voorheesville, then down to Elsemere and along some of the side streets in Delmar. ๐Ÿšด Then I hiked up Bennett Hill ๐Ÿšถ and then did an evening walk, for a total of 7 1/2 miles walked. I made sure to have a healthy lunch with lots of peas, corn, spinach, and tofu with spices and skipped desert at the end of the day for a glass with apple cider vinegar. ๐ŸŽ I figure if you’re going to eat crap ๐Ÿฅฆ you should make sure your at least including a fat-soluble vitamins from natural sources to mop up all that fat. Breakfast yesterday was apple-oatmeal-cake baked in the oven. No sugar, but some whole-wheat flour, an egg, bananas and several chopped up apples with cinnamon. ๐Ÿฅง

Tonight will have increasing clouds โ˜, with a low of 26 degrees at 5am. Eight degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 15th. Calm wind. In 2023, we had clear skies in the evening, which became mist by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 27 degrees. The record low of -14 occurred back in 1970.

The thing we’re watching is the snow storm possible on Saturday or Sunday. ๐ŸŒจ No guarantees at this point though. NOAA is leaning heavily on GFS model, which is showing the storm hitting the west coast hitting West Virginia and pushing out to see and we just having cold and cloudy weather. Seems like Appalachians have been hogging all of the snow this year. ๐Ÿท โ„๏ธ  Saturday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 33. Sunday, snow likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 32. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Typical average high for the weekend is 33 degrees. Maybe not that cold, as next weekend is one of the coldest on average in Albany, though it seems like lately winter has been coming later and later. I expect the really frigid weather to come February, about the time the record man says it should be warming up.

Looking ahead, next Tuesday is Static Electric Shock Day ๐Ÿงผ when the sun will be setting at 4:41 pm with dusk at 5:11 pm. But to more static electricity, we need it to be colder and drier. โšก This year hasn’t been that shocking by any measure of that. On that day in 2023, we had cloudy, snow showers and temperatures between 36 and 18 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 33 degrees. We hit a record high of 62 back in 2008.

Two weeks until Martin Luther King Day. ๐Ÿ–ค I am hoping things will be cooler and drier by then for good camping. ๐Ÿ• That’s my next adventure on the agenda.

Setting sun ?

Final Friday of 2023 โ˜บ

The year is coming to a close. I decided to work from home today so I can run to the store midday to get the supplies and food I need for the New Years Eve trip and probably because we’ll get released early and frankly because I don’t expect a busy day today at work today. If I have downtime, might as well work from home. But first a quick ride out to Voorheesville to get some exercise before work starts.

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Clouds and 42 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜” Calm wind. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow night around 10 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ But first quite mild.

I was pleasantly surprised โ˜บ that there is no showers around this morning ๐Ÿšฒ and I can do a morning bike ride before work for some exercise and working at home. Some things to do today but should be a generally slow day. At lunch time I want to get propane ๐Ÿฎ so my tank is full for camping ๐Ÿ• along with toothpaste and other things on my list at Walmart. ๐Ÿ“ƒ

Today will have a chance of showers. Patchy fog before noon. Otherwise, cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 47 degrees at 1pm. 12 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 22nd. Calm wind becoming southwest around 6 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 48 degrees. The record high of 71 was set in 1984. 6.0 inches of snow fell back in 1915.โ„

I managed to set off the smoke alarm twice this morning while cooking. ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿš’ I I’m sure my neighbor loves me for that fortunately he works the early shift. ๐Ÿณ Shredded onions and spinach with eggs ๐Ÿฅš made into a cake with mushrooms and peppers. Pretty good, fiber rich breakfast. I’ve also been enjoying that carrot ๐Ÿฅ• bread I made – the vital wheat gluten really helps improve the consistency ๐Ÿž and between the shredded carrots and the baking soda it baked to a nice deep color, almost like pumpernickel bread moist with the consistency almost of cake. And this time it wasn’t so tough on my stomach. ๐Ÿคฐ๐Ÿฝ

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:58 am with sun having an altitude of 24.1ยฐ from the due south horizon (-46.7ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:45 pm with the sun in the southwest (231ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (239ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:30 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 25 seconds with dusk around 5:01 pm, which is 44 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:38 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 46 degrees. There will be a west-southwest breeze at 6 mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 8 minutes of daytime, an increase of 36 seconds over today.

Tonight will have a chance of showers. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 38 degrees at 6am. 19 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 27th. West wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 43 degrees. The record low of -21 occurred back in 1933.

Tomorrow will have a chance of rain showers before 4pm, then a slight chance of rain and snow showers. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 43 degrees at 12pm. Eight degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 2nd. West wind 5 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Little or no snow accumulation expected. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 57 degrees. The record high of 53 was set in 1984. 10.9 inches of snow fell back in 2000.โ„

I think I’ll probably head up to camp โ›บ mid-morning tomorrow for the New Years Holiday. ๐ŸŽŠ Not planning anything too fancy just two nights in the wilderness with a fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ and some sparklers ๐ŸŽ‡ and try to stay up until midnight on NYE and toast in 2024. Maybe fry up some walnuts and cranberries. Listen to podcasts ๐Ÿ“ป and enjoy the mild weather and probably mud. I’m going to ride some trails and roads ๐Ÿšฒ though probably a lot will be muddy.

Looking ahead to Sunday, New Years Eve, partly sunny, โ˜€ with a high near 38. Northwest wind 8 to 11 mph. Typical average high for the weekend is 35 degrees.

Christmas Eve Sunset

I have zero idea on why my new smoke detector went off at 4 am ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿš’

I thought the photo electric detectors were supposed to be more reliable with fewer false triggers. There is no smoke, no cooking or showering at that hour. But it still triggered. And now I’m triggered. That was obnoxious.

Good morning! What day is it? A Wet Day, of course. Rain and 42 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜” There is a south-southeast breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Sunday around noontime. โ˜ƒ๏ธ Maybe it makes it feel better to be back from Madison County. I bet it’s really wet at the Horse Camp this morning. ๐ŸŒง ๐Ÿ‡ It’s good to be home, I guess.

Going to need the rain coat ๐Ÿงฅ today. Catching the local bus in this morning. ๐Ÿš I was going to catch Things have been kind of a cluster this morning ever since getting up at 4 am this morning. I’ll survive this pseudo Monday regardless. ๐Ÿ’ˆ I was going to catch the earlier express bus in to walk, ๐Ÿšถ‍โ™€๏ธ but then I decided I needed to cut my hair and time was tight, and then I misplaced my headphones, ๐ŸŽง so I ended up missing even the later express. The local is running late too. ๐Ÿ•“ Isn’t that fantastic.

Black beans soup is on the stove this morning. ๐Ÿฒ That’s going to be dinner tonight. Frozen vegetables ๐Ÿฅฆ, tofu, smoked paprika and nutritional yeast is going to be lunch. Getting away from rice and lentils for lunch now as lately it’s been rough on the stomach and I’m ready for a change. ๐Ÿคฎ Last night was a stew with turkey, carrots, celery, corn and some other things, along with flour and spices to thicken it up. Pretty good meal. Lunch was frying up the last of the onions and sweet potatoes I had before going shopping. ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐Ÿณ

Today will rain likely. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 47 degrees at 3pm. 12 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 22nd. South wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 34 degrees. The record high of 60 was set in 1895. 15.0 inches of snow fell back in 1894.โ„

That early smoke alarm was annoying, ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿš’ not sure what triggered it — maybe the humidity as the temperature dropped in my apartment. The steam when I was taking a shower and cooking also triggered in the afternoon. I didn’t have the heat on last night as it wasn’t really cold, indeed the heated blanket actually was uncomfortable that mid-evening I turned it off. Getting up at 4 AM wasn’t so bad though as I was asleep a little after 7 PM, as I was tired after heading out camping. Skipped making bread last night ๐Ÿž as I didn’t feel like kneading and wanted to get to bed early. ๐Ÿ›Œ Despite my early rising, I think I got a decent night’s sleep.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:57 am with sun having an altitude of 24.1° from the due south horizon (-46.8° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:43 pm with the sun in the southwest (231°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (238°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:29 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 25 seconds with dusk around 5:00 pm, which is 41 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waning Gibbous ๐ŸŒ– Moon in the northeast (52°) at an altitude of 0° from the horizon, 246,322 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:37 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 47 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 7 minutes of daytime, an increase of 27 seconds over today.

Tonight will rain. ๐ŸŒง Low of 43 degrees at 8pm. 22 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 14th. Light and variable wind becoming northeast around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 22 degrees. The record low of -14 occurred back in 1951.

Tonight’s plan calls for enjoying that bean soup, ๐Ÿฅฃ followed by kneading bread. ๐Ÿž I forgot to get more squash so I can’t bake that while baking bread, so I might end up doing two loaves, and freezing the other one for the weekend. It’s always nice to have fresh bread up at camp, assuming that’s what ends up happening.

NYE Weekend is rapidly sliding downhill. ๐Ÿ˜• โ˜” Kind of what you’d expect 2023 to close out like. Saturday, a chance of rain and snow showers before 7am, then a chance of rain showers between 7am and 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 41. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 40. Typical average high for the weekend is 35 degrees.

Snow Covered Top

It was the morning before Christmas ๐Ÿคถ ๐ŸŽ… โ„๏ธ

One week until New Years Eve, might actually be cold and snowy for that. But foggy, damp and everything is kind of mush for this Christmas Eve up in the wilds of Madison County.

Good morning on this somewhat damp Christmas Eve ! ๐ŸŽ„ Cloudy, damp, foggy and 35 degrees at the Moscow Hill Camping Area. ๐ŸŒฅ There is a south breeze at 9 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. There is a dusting of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ Temperatures will drop below freezing at Friday around 3 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

It was drizzle when I first awoke ๐ŸŒง๏ธ after heading to bed ๐Ÿ› early last night due to the rain. It tapered off early this morning but left everything a damp slushy mess. Eggs for breakfast were good, I’ve been poking around camp โ›บ sitting by the heater and slowly gathering firewood and chopping it up for the night ahead. ๐Ÿชต๐Ÿช“

Today will have a chance of showers, mainly before 3pm. Cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 39 degrees at 5pm. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 14th. South wind 5 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 15 degrees. The record high of 72 was set in 2015. 13.0 inches of snow fell back in 1966.โ„

I swear there are two types of winter days when camping. ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธโ˜ƒ๏ธ Bitterly cold but sunny and rainy and damp. Today is the later. It’s fine but the forecast was so much more optimistic a few days back. I was hoping for sun โ˜€ today for a nice walk ๐Ÿšถ in the woods and some Christmas Eve bird ๐Ÿฆ watching. Tomorrow, Christmas might be slightly better but I have my doubts. It’s still nice to be away and it’s not real cold.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:02 pm with sun having an altitude of 23.8ยฐ from the due south horizon (-46.8ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.6 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:47 pm with the sun in the southwest (230ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (238ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:33 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 26 seconds with dusk around 5:04 pm, which is 34 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Full ๐ŸŒ Moon in the east-northeast (78ยฐ) at an altitude of 25ยฐ from the horizon, 237,846 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:41 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 37 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 5 minutes of daytime, an increase of 9 seconds over yesterday.

Christmas Eve will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 33 degrees at 6am. 13 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 12th. Light south wind. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 11 degrees. The record low of -22 occurred back in 1969.

Yesterday I went down to Hamilton.๐Ÿฆ†It was chilly at Woodman Pond and the Old Chenango Canal so I didn’t stay long or spend much time poking around the village. Instead I went to Price Chopper got a few extra groceries and headed over to Moscow Hill to set up camp โ›บ, have a nice lunch and gather firewood for the night to come. Drizzled a bit midday then snow and sleet in the evening and rain around 8 pm.

Snow Covered Forest

The winter camping trip begins โ„ โ›บ

Just reviewing my packing list and finishing getting ready, doing some cleaning and double checking things.

Good morning! Partly cloudy and 31 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… There is a north-northeast breeze at 13 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Things will start to thaw out at Saturday around 10 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Kind of a cool day to start out my trip with the breeze ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ but it will be sunnier later and then a cold night ๐ŸŒƒ is ahead. But my propane tank is full ๐Ÿฎ, I’ll have a good fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ and enjoy the cold. Winter starts at 10:27 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ Going to be a cold night, I’m not sure if I’ll stay up that late. Maybe.

Today will be partly sunny, then gradually becoming sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 32 degrees at 2pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around January 15th. North wind 9 to 14 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 34 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 2018. 6.6 inches of snow fell back in 2008.โ„

Today’s plans are to head out to Stoney Pond State Forest ๐Ÿž and camp there. I’m thinking about stopping at For the Love of Bacon ๐Ÿฅ“ to get some of the name sake, and maybe to ride the Chenango Canal Trailway and explore Hamilton NY on my bicycle ๐Ÿšฒ as time allows. That said, the sun sets early this time of year. Looks like it will be a nice day but maybe somewhat cold. But it’s to be expected in December a few days before Christmas.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:54 am with sun having an altitude of 23.9ยฐ from the due south horizon (-46.9ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:40 pm with the sun in the southwest (230ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (238ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:25 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 25 seconds with dusk around 4:56 pm, which is 28 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous ๐ŸŒ” Moon in the east-southeast (120ยฐ) at an altitude of 43ยฐ from the horizon, 229,997 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:33 pm. At sunset, look for sunny skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 30 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 9 mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 6 minutes of daytime, an increase of one second over today. Days are getting longer.

Working from home ๐Ÿก or in my case the library ๐Ÿ’ป was good yesterday, it gave me an opportunity to get packed and get supplies before camping ๐Ÿ•. I ended up working late as it took longer than I expected at the store midday ๐Ÿ›’ but all was good. Came home made bread and had it ready to bring camping.

Tonight will be clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 12 degrees at 5am. Nine degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around 9 at 12am; North wind 6 to 8 mph. That’s going to be a cold night for sure. In 2022, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 19 degrees. The record low of -8 occurred back in 1955. At least not that cold.

Clouds for the weekend but warmer. โ˜๏ธSaturday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 39. South wind around 7 mph. Sunday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 43. Typical average high for the weekend is 36 degrees.

Looking ahead, next Thursday is 4:30 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ† when the sun will be setting at 4:30 pm with dusk at 5:01 pm. A sign of longer days ahead. On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 41 and 22 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 35 degrees. We hit a record high of 61 back in 1982.

 Snow Has Stopped

The day before my Christmas Week Trip ๐ŸŽ… โ›บ

Up at five o’clock, frying onions and eggs and spinach, a good breakfast before sitting down and doing more study of neural networks and machine learning. Early to rise makes a man, healthy, wealthy and wise, or so I tell myself.

Good morning! What day is it? Work from Home Day, of course. Sunny and 25 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒž There is a north-northwest breeze at 9 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Things will start to thaw out at around 9 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Out for a morning bike ride ๐Ÿšฒ to Voorheesville to burn some calories before heading home and settling down to work. ๐Ÿ’ป Depending on the projects that come in for review I’ll work down at the library or in my truck. Lunch time I want to get to Tractor Supply to refill my propane tank ๐Ÿฎ and get a few supplies for camping ๐Ÿ• so I can get an early start come Thursday. I’ll set up camp, do some hiking and then Friday I plan to ride more of the Erie Canalway from Canastota to Rome.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 40 degrees at 1pm. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 11th. Northwest wind 7 to 10 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 32 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 1957. 8.4 inches of snow fell back in 1975.โ„

Should be a nice day though that breeze will make it cold. ๐ŸŒฌ But I’ll bundle up for my morning ride, this time out to Voorheesville, then when I’m working remotely from my truck at the library, I’ll have the solar gain of the windshield to stay warm or I can work from inside the library if it’s quiet enough and I don’t end up taking many calls. โ˜Ž๏ธ I’ll see. Then I’m hoping if I have some downtime at work I can run home and do some packing and getting ready for the trip. Should be a nice weekend, but maybe cold a times.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:54 am with sun having an altitude of 24° from the due south horizon (-46.9° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:39 pm with the sun in the southwest (230°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (238°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:25 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 25 seconds with dusk around 4:56 pm, which is 25 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous ๐ŸŒ” Moon in the southeast (139°) at an altitude of 44° from the horizon, 228,182 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:33 pm. At sunset, look for mostly sunny skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 38 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 10 mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 6 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 4 seconds over today.

I am very happy with that new photo-electric smoke detector. ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐Ÿš’ This morning I accidentally got a frying pan a bit hot when cooking down the onions, and no alarm. ๐Ÿง… That made me quite happy and I am sure my neighbor too not having a fire alarm at 5:30 AM. Breakfast still came out quite good, and I cleaned up my kitchen a bit. Soup I’m planning on for lunch.

Tonight will have increasing clouds โ˜, with a low of 25 degrees at 6am. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 9th. North wind 9 to 11 mph. In 2022, we had clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 16 degrees. The record low of -18 occurred back in 1942.

Today a train moved very fast in America — that is relatively speaking. ๐Ÿš‰ In 1967, a Pennsylvania Railroad Budd Metroliner exceeds 155 mph on their New York Division, now Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor. It was a test mission, but the high speed rail wasn’t to be due to frequent break downs and bottlenecks along the Northeast Corridor and the soon to be bankrupt Pennsylvania Railroad not long to be kept afloat by government funds and soon to offload passenger service to the government in the form of Amtrak. ๐Ÿ›ค๏ธ I don’t think even the latest high speed rail experiments have gotten that fast in recent years in America though slowly but surely the Northeast Corridor between New York City and Washington DC has gotten faster. ๐Ÿš„

Weekend is starting to look cloudier but mild. ๐ŸŒฅ Thursday – Sunny, with a high near 34. North wind 10 to 13 mph. Friday – Sunny, with a high near 33. North wind 3 to 5 mph. Saturday – Mostly cloudy, with a high near 38.  Sunday – Partly sunny, with a high near 41. Christmas Day – Partly sunny, with a high near 44. Still not terrible weather for winter camping, and it doesn’t look like I’ll have much snow to deal with out in Madison County. Typical average high for the weekend is 36 degrees.

A Second Try At The State Tree

Before the rain, a week before Christmas and two before New Years Eve ๐ŸŽ…๐ŸŽ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŽŠ๐ŸŽ‡๐ŸŽ†๐Ÿงจ

Good morning! Happy Sunday. Cloudy and 42 degrees this morning but will warm up later on. โ˜ There is a south-southeast breeze at 9 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The current wind chill is 30. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Tuesday around 6 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Up and cooking this morning at 5 o’clock after running to the rest room. ๐Ÿง‘๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿณ Just eggs ๐Ÿฅš for breakfast and a grapefruit. ๐ŸŸ  Also cooking down chickpeas for hummus. Plan to get to the store fairly early this morning, including home depot to get the stove burner first. โ›ฝ I need to gas up the truck, first time since before my Thanksgiving Black Friday trip to the Adirondacks. ๐ŸŒฒI could get propane but I’ll probably wait until heading out of town on Thursday or Friday.

Today will have a slight chance of drizzle or light rain between 11am and 2pm, then a chance of rain after 2pm. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 49 degrees at 4pm. 11 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 17th. Southeast wind 7 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 39 degrees. The record high of 59 was set in 1984. 19.7 inches of snow fell back in 2020.โ„

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:52 am with sun having an altitude of 24ยฐ from the due south horizon (-46.8ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:38 pm with the sun in the southwest (231ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (238ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:24 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 25 seconds with dusk around 4:55 pm, which is 18 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the south (189ยฐ) at an altitude of 32ยฐ from the horizon, 226,410 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:32 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 48 degrees. There will be a southeast breeze at 7 mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 6 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 17 seconds over today.

Tonight will rain. The rain could be heavy at times. ๐ŸŒง Low of 48 degrees at 6pm. 24 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 3rd. Southeast wind 7 to 9 mph becoming east after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible. In 2022, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 25 degrees. The record low of -9 occurred back in 1919.

Today in 1777 during the American Revolution, โ›ฒ France formally recognizes the United States.

As previously noted, next Sunday is Christmas Eve ๐ŸŽ… when the sun will be setting at 4:28 pm with dusk at 4:58 pm. On that day in 2022, we had cold day, partly cloudy skies, snow showers and temperatures between 15 and 7 degrees. This Christmas Eve looks to be a lot warmer but then again it’s an El Niรฑo winter much like 2005. Typically, the high temperature is 36 degrees. We hit a record high of 72 back in 2015.
