I have zero idea on why my new smoke detector went off at 4 am 🧑‍🚒

I thought the photo electric detectors were supposed to be more reliable with fewer false triggers. There is no smoke, no cooking or showering at that hour. But it still triggered. And now I’m triggered. That was obnoxious.

The local is running late too. 🕓 Isn’t that fantastic.

Black beans soup is on the stove this morning. 🍲 That’s going to be dinner tonight. Frozen vegetables 🥦, tofu, smoked paprika and nutritional yeast is going to be lunch. Getting away from rice and lentils for lunch now as lately it’s been rough on the stomach and I’m ready for a change. 🤮 Last night was a stew with turkey, carrots, celery, corn and some other things, along with flour and spices to thicken it up. Pretty good meal. Lunch was frying up the last of the onions and sweet potatoes I had before going shopping. 👨‍🍳

That early smoke alarm was annoying, 👩‍🚒 not sure what triggered it — maybe the humidity as the temperature dropped in my apartment. I didn’t have the heat on last night as it wasn’t really cold, indeed the heated blanket actually was uncomfortable that mid-evening I turned it off. Getting up at 4 AM wasn’t so bad though as I was asleep a little after 7 PM, as I was tired after heading out camping. After five nights of camping, three nights here at Charles Baker State Forest I’m taking down camp and finishing up packing my truck. I want to get home fairly early so I can do my wash at the laundromat and possibly wash my truck though that gives me pause as come Friday I might be heading back out to the wilderness for a NYE trip though the start of 2024 on Monday morning.

Ad revenue has really dried up lately on the blog 💸 but that’s to be expected this time of year with less traffic. I guess I could do more aggressive ads but I feel like it’s enough advertising as it is for my taste. That $164 check I got last Friday was kind of nice, but with the drop of revenue this time of year I doubt I’ll get another payment until the third week of March, and that will probably only be slightly more then that check. But I do expect looking at historical blog traffic things should pick up.

Yesterday I went down to Hamilton.🦆It was chilly at Woodman Pond and the Old Chenango Canal so I didn’t stay long or spend much time poking around the village. Instead I went to Price Chopper got a few extra groceries and headed over to Moscow Hill to set up camp ⛺, have a nice lunch and gather firewood for the night to come. Drizzled a bit midday then snow and sleet in the evening and rain around 8 pm.

It might be a fair bit warmer today but with the breeze and clouds it feels pretty cold. I’m taking down camp to head to Hamilton and ultimately Brookfield to camp and explore that forest through Christmas Day. Then maybe on Christmas I’ll head down to Cooperstown and then home. My parents have been sick with a bad cold so it seems likely Christmas will be remote. I’ll still probably head home on Christmas Day though I also have boxing day off.

Yesterday morning got kind of a late start 🥶 because it was so cold out. Plus I wanted to chop wood 🪵🪓 so I’d be ready when I got back to camp ⛺. Then I did a hike at Oxbow Falls County Park 🏞 and looked off the escarpment. A fairly clear day.

Rode 36 miles yesterday from Canastota to East Verona on the Old Erie Canal Trail then back via NY 46 to Oneida, then the Oneida Rail Trail to the Oneida Waterline Trail to Wampsville back to Canastota. 🚲 It was cold this morning so I got a late start, plus I visited Oxbow Falls in the morning, but I hit the trail at noon and returned back at four.

Drove back to camp before dark, made turkey soup 🦃🍅🍲 with lots of delicious vegetables. No bacon 🥓 this meal even though next Saturday is bacon day.

While I was warm and comfortable under the covers in my unheated truck cap last night my toes were cold and stiff. Cold getting up but the heater was warm as was the coffee and eggs with all the fixings. Didn’t get up until after seven as the morning was so cold and dark.

The day before my Christmas Week Trip 🎅 ⛺

Up at five o’clock, frying onions and eggs and spinach, a good breakfast before sitting down and doing more study of neural networks and machine learning. Early to rise makes a man, healthy, wealthy and wise, or so I tell myself.

Should be a nice day though that breeze will make it cold. 🌬 But I’ll bundle up for my morning ride, this time out to Voorheesville, then when I’m working remotely from my truck at the library, I’ll have the solar gain of the windshield to stay warm or I can work from inside the library if it’s quiet enough and I don’t end up taking many calls. ☎️ I’ll see. Then I’m hoping if I have some downtime at work I can run home and do some packing and getting ready for the trip. Should be a nice weekend, but maybe cold a times.

I am very happy with that new photo-electric smoke detector. 👨‍🚒 This morning I accidentally got a frying pan a bit hot when cooking down the onions, and no alarm. 🧅 That made me quite happy and I am sure my neighbor too not having a fire alarm at 5:30 AM. Breakfast still came out quite good, and I cleaned up my kitchen a bit. Soup I’m planning on for lunch.

Tonight will have increasing clouds ☁, with a low of 25 degrees at 6am. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 9th. North wind 9 to 11 mph. In 2022, we had clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 16 degrees. The record low of -18 occurred back in 1942.

Today a train moved very fast in America — that is relatively speaking. 🚉 In 1967, a Pennsylvania Railroad Budd Metroliner exceeds 155 mph on their New York Division, now Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor. It was a test mission, but the high speed rail wasn’t to be due to frequent break downs and bottlenecks along the Northeast Corridor and the soon to be bankrupt Pennsylvania Railroad not long to be kept afloat by government funds and soon to offload passenger service to the government in the form of Amtrak. 🛤️ I don’t think even the latest high speed rail experiments have gotten that fast in recent years in America though slowly but surely the Northeast Corridor between New York City and Washington DC has gotten faster. 🚄

Weekend is starting to look cloudier but mild. 🌥 Thursday – Sunny, with a high near 34. North wind 10 to 13 mph. Friday – Sunny, with a high near 33. North wind 3 to 5 mph. Saturday – Mostly cloudy, with a high near 38. Sunday – Partly sunny, with a high near 41. Christmas Day – Partly sunny, with a high near 44. Still not terrible weather for winter camping, and it doesn’t look like I’ll have much snow to deal with out in Madison County. Typical average high for the weekend is 36 degrees.
