March 9, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Saturday. Finally the weekend! Sunny and 29 degrees on Bennett Hill here in Clarksville. ๐ŸŒž There is a north-northwest breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. There are 3 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at around 11 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 38 degrees at 3pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical day around February 28th. Northeast wind 3 to 6 mph. A year ago, we had light snow in the morning, which became mostly sunny by afternoon. The high last year was 37 degrees. The record high of 81 was set in 2016. Not this year! 6.9 inches of snow fell back in 1961.โ„

While certainly not as warm as 2016, still lots of sun โ˜€ this morning. I met my parents for breakfast ๐Ÿณ at Jakes Moon ๐ŸŽ‘ and now are hiking on Bennett Hill ๐Ÿšถ. Snow isn’t too deep except the part by the overlook where it is drifted. I kind of wish that I had brought skis or snow shoes for that part, but I’m only wearing microspikes, expecting more ice than snow. The skis will good later on when I go out to Partridge Run to ski ๐ŸŽฟ and search for sheds.

The sun will set at 5:55 pm with dusk around 6:23 pm, which is one minute and 11 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 34 degrees. There will be a northeast breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 11 hours and 38 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 53 seconds over yesterday.

The plan for the rest of the day is to next hike on Wolf ๐Ÿบ Hill at the Keihler Preserve then do some skiing ๐ŸŽฟ in the back portion of Partridge Run and keep my eyes ๐Ÿ‘€ peeled for sheds, wildlife and scenic beauty. ๐Ÿ—ป Not sure how icy Gifford Hollow Road will be but hoping it won’t be too bad for getting into the back for skiing but I’m not going to take chances. I know it’s plowed and sanded but I’m worried ๐Ÿ˜ฏ it might not be great. I can always park ๐Ÿ…ฟand ski ๐ŸŽฟ from wherever.

Tonight will snow, mainly after 3am. ๐ŸŒจ Low of 26 degrees at 9pm. Three degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical night around March 16th. I like that, it will give the heater a break! Northeast wind 6 to 15 mph becoming southeast after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible. In 2018, we had mostly clear in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 29 degrees. The record low of 0 occurred back in 1996.

Tomorrow will snow and sleet, possibly mixed with freezing rain before noon, then rain and sleet likely between noon and 1pm, then rain likely after 1pm. High of 37 degrees at 3pm. ๐Ÿ’ฆ One degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical day around March 8th. Southeast wind 11 to 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Little or no ice accumulation expected. New snow and sleet accumulation of around an inch possible. A year ago, we had light snow in the morning, which became mostly sunny by afternoon. The high last year was 38 degrees. The record high of 72 was set in 1977. 5.7 inches of snow fell back in 1964.โ„

I might wash Big Red tomorrow ๐Ÿ›€, depending on how early the ice turns to rain โ˜”. I really want to wash the salt off the underbody. I’m heading over to John Wolcott’s house ๐Ÿก in the afternoon to continue sorting his files ๐Ÿ“‚. Then I’ll go pick up a few groceries to make it through the week. Trying to save money wherever possible.

Today in 1959, Barbie doll makes its debut at the American International Toy Fair in New York.๐Ÿ™† Dogs forever have enjoyed chewing off the their heads and boys have enjoyed them watching them melt in the fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ.

Looking ahead, there are 7 weeks until Arbor Day ๐ŸŒณ when the sun will be setting at 7:51 pm with dusk at 8:22 pm (Daylight Savings Time). On that day in 2018, we had rain showers, cold, partly cloudy and temperatures between 50 and 36 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 63 degrees. We hit a record high of 91 back in 1962.

Looking ahead, Arbor Day ๐ŸŒณ is in 7 weeks, 8 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ is in 8 weeks, June ๐Ÿน is in 12 weeks, Average High is 80 ๐Ÿ– is in 15 weeks, Hottest Time of the Year ๐Ÿ˜… is in 18 weeks and Average High Falls To 79 ๏ธDegrees โ›ฑ๏ธ๏ธ๏ธ is in 24 weeks.

March 8, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Not yet a summer get away weekend but Memorial Day Weekend ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ is only 11 weeks away at this point.๐Ÿ• Attention friendly strangers in black sedans, Next Friday is Ides of March โœ. Cold but very sunny โ˜€ around 13 degrees in Delmar. Not a whole lot of warmth in the sun today. There is a south-southwest breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The current wind chill is 2. Not a really good day for frosty, as only patches of snow remain around. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will finally start to thaw out at around noontime. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ Thumpty-thump, thumpty-thump, look at frosty go.

Remarkably chilly morning walking down to the express bus stop.๐Ÿš Despite all the sun โ˜€ there isn’t a lot of warmth in the air. I also left the heat turned down last night because I didn’t think it was that cold โ„ and honestly I’m trying to save money ๐Ÿ’ต however possible to make it over the fiscal cliff known as tax season. I’m hoping at this point that I won’t have to turn the heat up at night night because the nights won’t be that cold. I’m not seeing a lot of below normal weather in the forecast for the next week.

It’s just kind of depressing to read my home energy report the utility sends me and see that 94% of my winter energy โšก use is from heating. ๐Ÿ”ฅ My heating bills have been higher this year than last year according to the report, but then again we had the cold spell and sometimes I’ll turn it up a bit when I’m cold. But every time I turn up the heating knob, I realize I am stealing from my future in two ways — less money to save ๐Ÿ’ธ and more climate change from the burnt natural gas.๐ŸŒ I do find my blaze-orange hoodie keeps me warm, so I wear it a lot more and just are cold morning. Eventually when I own land and home, insulation is going to be a priority, as will having an efficient, wood or maybe coal stove. Energy security is a big concern for me, I’ve seen too many people struggle after they loose power or their propane supplier doesn’t show up promptly for re-fills. Things are only going to get worse as climate change gets worse.

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 36 degrees at 3pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 22nd. Where are you Mr. March weather? Probably in Florida. Southwest wind around 8 mph. Might be good though for a lunch time walk ๐Ÿšถ . A year ago, we had partly cloudy in the morning, which became light snow by afternoon. The high last year was 35 degrees. The record high of 68 was set in 2012. 6.5 inches of snow fell back in 2013.โ„

Today back In 1965, Thirty-five hundred United States Marines ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธโ›ด are the first American land combat forces committed during the Vietnam War. ๐Ÿ”ซ The Vietnam War was getting underway, a quagmire that would ultimately undermine the Great Society plans and be one of America’s longest wars. Never declared a war, it still did a lot of harm to our country to say nothing of Vietnam and lead to a lot of unnecessary deaths.โ˜

The sun will set at 5:53 pm with dusk around 6:21 pm, which is one minute and 12 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 34 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 11 hours and 35 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 54 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 18 degrees at 6am. Five degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical night around February 20th. South wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. In 2018, we had light snow. It got down to 27 degrees. The record low of -14 occurred back in 1943.

Tomorrow will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 41 degrees at 3pm. Typical temperature for a change. Not above or below normal, just normal. Doesn’t happen very frequently — only four times over the past winter. Calm wind becoming northeast around 5 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had partly cloudy in the morning, which became light snow by afternoon. The high last year was 37 degrees. The record high of 81 was set in 2016. 6.9 inches of snow fell back in 1961.โ„

Tomorrow looks like a nice day. I am thinking about meeting my parents for breakfast, ๐Ÿณ and then going out for a hike/ski in the Heldebergs and look for sheds ๐ŸฆŒ or at least enjoy the beautiful day.๐Ÿž I’m trying to minimize the miles on my truck and not filling up the gas tank for a while, but I’d hate to miss the nice weather on Saturday as who knows how much longer the snow will be around. Gas isn’t that expensive, โ›ฝ and I’m not planning to head out that far, and next week like this week, I plan to keep the truck parked through Saturday or maybe Sunday, ๐Ÿ…ฟso it won’t be burning any fuel in the mean-time.

Looking ahead to Sunday, rain, snow, and sleet, becoming all rain after 11am. ๐ŸŒจ High near 42. Southeast wind 8 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. Typical average high for the weekend is 41 degrees. I emailed Mr. Wolcott to see if he’s around on Sunday, I might go over to his house. I could take a bus, or I might drive this week, as I would like to wash the salt off my truck ๐Ÿ› and pick up the few groceries I need. I’m avoiding a “full” shop this weekend, to save money, and because I have way too much food at home right now. If I didn’t have to wash the salt off the truck, I’d probably just leave Big Red Parked until next week. No problem with keeping the accessory battery fully charged, it was at 15.4 volts this morning with the stronger sun of spring time.

Sunday is the first day of Daylight Savings Time. โŒš I know it doesn’t actually save time but it does mean more light in the evening ๐ŸŒ‡ which once it warms up and I’m not working late at work, I can go down to the park with a book ๐Ÿ“™. I really look forward to the change, even if it means I will have to get an extra hour early up for work. But with the days getting longer so quickly, I don’t think that’s a big deal.๐Ÿ•œ I already set the analog clocks ahead in my bathroom and kitchen, the next step will be to set the clock in my truck and reprogram my microcontrollers with the time change. I know I probably could hard-code in the time change to the controllers, but it’s just easier to re-flash the memory twice a year. For about a week, it will be dark when I wake up for work, but with lights coming on automatically, it shouldn’t be that difficult to wake in the morning. Plus, I can go back to setting my alarm clock each day.

In four weeks on April 5 the sun will be setting at 7:26 pm (Daylight Savings Time),๐ŸŒ„ which is one hour, 32 minutes and 23 seconds later then today. In 2018 on that day, we had a rather cold but partly cloudy day with some snow showers and temperatures between 39 and 24 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 54 and 33 degrees. The last few Aprils have been pretty cold, but I’m not totally sure that will be the trend this year. The record high of 82 degrees was set back in 1928.

Looking forward to finally nice weather, and getting out of town on the weekends once the snow bites the bucket. ๐Ÿ• It’s going to happen, it always does. Sure many roads will be closed for mud season, but there are still many places I can go once the snow is gone. NY 8 in the Adirondacks comes to mind, especially early May before the black fly season has started. Solar panel should work good this time of year. The fiscal cliff I face, is manageable, and with some careful planning, I should be able to enjoy adventures in late April into May, depending a lot on how busy my work schedule is and the weather. I want to definitely do some trout fishing, ๐ŸŽฃ plus have a nice big fire up in the woods ๐Ÿ”ฅ with a cold one or two.ย  Snow camping is fine, but I much prefer truck cap camping, and not tromping through the snow.

Looking ahead, Ides of March โœ is in 1 weeks, Memorial Day Weekend Starts ๐Ÿ•๏ธ is in 11 weeks and Dog Days of Summer ๐ŸŒป is in 17 weeks.

March 6, 2019 Morning

Good morning! What day is it? Last Wednesday when the sun will set before 7 pm until mid September. ๐ŸŒ†. Partly sunny and 13 degrees in Delmar. There is a west-northwest breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The current wind chill is 2. There are 2 inches of snow on the ground but many patches are bare. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at Friday around 2 pm. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ I expect after Sundays rain โ˜” a lot of the snow will be gone. Hopefully it won’t be replaced by ice which has been much too common these days.

Easy waking up again this morning as sun was bright ๐ŸŒ… and rose quite early. I know next week with flip the clock ๐Ÿ•’ ahead an hour it will make getting up more difficult although I’m hoping the fact that I’ve been getting to bed early over the past month ๐Ÿ’ค will help. Honestly I haven’t set my alarm โฐ all week long but I’ve been up at seven each day. I doubt that will be possible next week with the time change.

This morning I tightened up the button on the correct pair of pants ๐Ÿ‘– that I was afraid to have pop off, cooked waffles with peaches and ironed my clothes for work. I was doing okay ๐Ÿ‘Œ for time until I wasn’t but I ended up making the bus ๐Ÿš in time โŒš with a minute or so to spare.

Today will have a chance of snow showers, mainly after 2pm. Partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 21 degrees at 1pm. 19 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around 4 at 10am; Northwest wind 8 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than one inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny. The high last year was 45 degrees. The record high of 63 was set in 1974. 10.5 inches of snow fell back in 1887.โ„

The sun will set at 5:51 pm with dusk around 6:19 pm, which is one minute and 12 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for snow showers, clouds โ˜ ๐ŸŒจ and temperatures around 19 degrees. The wind chill around sunset will be 7. โ˜ƒ๏ธ There will be a west-northwest breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 11 hours and 30 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 53 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of snow showers, mainly before 10pm. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 8 degrees at 4am. 14 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around -1 at 4am; West wind 5 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. Going to be a cold night ๐ŸŒƒ for March. In 2018, we had cloudy in the evening, which became light snow by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 31 degrees. The record low of -6 occurred back in 1950.

Tomorrow will have a slight chance of snow showers after 8am. Partly sunny ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 26 degrees at 3pm. 15 degrees below normal. West wind 5 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny. The high last year was 36 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 1974. 10.3 inches of snow fell back in 1967.โ„

Today in 1857, Supreme Court of the United States rules in the Dred Scott v. SI have a lot of food, I really should avoid shopping next week not only to save money but also to clean out some of the uneaten fooandford case. ๐Ÿ‘ณ Conservatives still cite the case to this day, as relates to abortion but I’m not fully understanding of its ramifications. ๐Ÿ‘ถI probably should read ๐Ÿ“– up about it.

Yesterday wasn’t a half bad day, I was able to get the 5:55 pm home ๐Ÿก๐Ÿšby six thirty. I got home, cooked up fish ๐Ÿ  and brussel sprouts and rode the excerise bike ๐Ÿšฒ until around eight. Worked on some code for a bit then went out for my evening walk. ๐ŸšถA bit of a chilly evening for sure.

I keep trying to do more excerise each day because I want to be in better shape come spring. ๐ŸŒท I’m not planning to do a lot of mountain hiking ๐Ÿ—ป this year but I do want to do more day hikes back to various fishing ๐ŸŽฃ holes and maybe even some more backcountry camping โ›บ with the hammock. I’ve though ๐Ÿ’ญ about getting one of those battery ๐Ÿ”‹ backup packs that I could use for powering my phone for music ๐ŸŽถ and podcasts on extended trips in the wilderness. ๐Ÿ“ฑ

I programmed in a bunch more messages and improvements to the VMS display I have in my apartment. โ™’ Some are pretty funny, a few are vulgar but who cares only I see them. I also uploaded a bunch more bug fixes that fix little problems with the code. It’s kind of a silly ๐Ÿ˜‹ little thing but I like being wished a good morning, little messages and almanac data.

I checked my pantry and I think I can get away without shopping next week except for a perishables ๐Ÿฑ in other words things like cheese and ketchup that get used up but are essential for good meals. ๐Ÿด I have a lot of food, I really should avoid shopping next week not only to save money but also to eat up some of the uneaten food. ๐Ÿฒ I have close to a full tank of gas so I won’t need to buy gas for a few weeks especially if I don’t head out of town or drive anywhere except out to the folks house on Sunday.

I also discovered another shirt ๐Ÿ‘š in the closet so I can put off buying another shirt for now. Next time I’m out near the Pine Bush ๐ŸŒฒI’ll have to run to the maul and see if they have something that works for me. I really think the quality of the Sears dress shirts declined before they closed. I really liked the comfort of the shirts, they fit me well but they keep wearing out in the elbows and cuffs prematurely in my book. ๐Ÿ“™

I am still thinking ๐Ÿ’ญ my first big trip of the year will be the days leading up to Easter Weekend which is like five weeks away now. โ›บ I don’t think it will be super expensive, I don’t need to buy that much food ๐Ÿฒ and the only other cost maybe is firewood for the first night, gasoline โ›ฝand maybe a thirty rack of cheap beer.๐Ÿป. Oh and I guess some bait for fishing.๐ŸŽฃ

I kind of like the idea ๐Ÿ’ก of a North Country trip but I might not go that far as there are many good trout streams locally. I do want to get away but I don’t want to spend all the time motoring. I’d rather be able to set up campโ›บ and stay in one spot multiple nights relying on the sun โ˜€ for solar power.

Paying all those taxes sucks on April 15th ๐Ÿฌbut I realize it’s kind of good because it means I made dividends and interest last year that were reinvested towards tomorrow. Short term pain now for a better tomorrow. It might take a few decades commitment but I’m looking forward to a better tomorrow. ๐Ÿ˜Š

I got a bunch of relays in, which was the final component I needed for building the smart relay for my truck ๐Ÿšš.I really got to get testing and building things soon ๐Ÿ”œ as spring and camping โ›บ season really isn’t that far away.

As previously noted, next Wednesday is 7 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ† with dusk at 7:29 pm (Daylight Savings Time). On that day in 2018, we had snow and temperatures between 34 and 30 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 43 degrees. We hit a record high of 70 back in 2012.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. ๐Ÿ˜• Saturday, sunny, with a high near 39. Sunday, snow likely before 10am, then rain and snow likely between 10am and 1pm, then rain likely after 1pm. Cloudy, with a high near 40. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Typical average high for the weekend is 41 degrees.

In four weeks on April 3 the sun will be setting at 7:23 pm (Daylight Savings Time),๐ŸŒ„ which is one hour, 32 minutes and 30 seconds later then today. In 2018 on that day, we had rain showers, partly cloudy and temperatures between 44 and 33 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 53 and 33 degrees. The record high of 79 degrees was set back in 1981.

Looking ahead, 7 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ† is in 1 weeks, May ๐Ÿ•Š is in 8 weeks, 8:30 PM Sunset ๏ธโ›ฑ๏ธ is in 13 weeks and Inauguration Day 2021 ๐Ÿ‘ด๐Ÿป is in 98 weeks.

Rededicate Myself to Spending More Time in the Wilderness Observing.

I was listening to the Iowa Sportsman podcast about shed hunting, I was thinking I really don’t spend enough time in the wilderness. Living in the city, it’s just kind of a bother to fire up my pickup truck, invest the fuel and mileage to get out to the wilderness, especially in the cold of the winter, to walk the miles to search for sheds and see more of the woods.

Before sunset

I’d be a better outdoorsman if I actually spent more time in wilderness then I do. Just more time walking around, exploring. I guess I do spend a fair amount of time in the summer months, although probably too much of the time is spent in swimming holes or paddling or traveling, and not enough time just walking in the woods, actually observing.

A winter wonderland

I really should spend more time in the wilderness, but traveling is expensive, and money spent now is money not available for the future. But maybe this summer, I will rededicate myself to investing more time to simple walks in the woods, more time by the fishing hole, and more time just observing nature — and less time running from point a to point b.

More Observers

February 22, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Next Friday Starts March ๐ŸŒจ. That’s always a month of change, quite variable. Cloudy now and 36 degrees in Delmar. โ›… There is a northwest breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The current wind chill is 22. There are 2 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ Will it be gone by evening? Maybe ๏ธTemperatures will drop below freezing at around 6 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

The morning started out quite gray but cleared up for a while and is now gray again. At at least it gets light out pretty early. ๐ŸŒ„Two weeks, one day until the time change. I think I got a fairly good night’s sleep. No sleeping pill last night. I’m trying to break the habit so it doesn’t become a problem and honestly getting to bed at a proper hour is more important than occasionally waking up at night.๐Ÿ˜ด

I’m glad it’s a Friday. Thirteen weeks to the start of Memorial Day Weekend. ๐Ÿ• I can feel the swarms of black flies already. It better not rain that weekend, or I think we should order protests of the National Weather Headquarters. ๐Ÿ—ฏThe weeks are going quickly which is good because I want the snow to go so I can truck cap camp, especially before the black flies return. I miss the nights in the wilderness, the fires and waking up and cooking a breakfast on the griddle.๐Ÿณ

Today will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 44 degrees at 2pm. Eight degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 15th. Northwest wind around 9 mph. Seems like it will become a pretty nice day. A year ago, we had light snow showers for a good portion of the day. The high last year was 40 degrees. The record high of 68 was set in 1997. 14.8 inches of snow fell back in 1893.โ„

The sun will set at 5:36 pm with dusk around 6:05 pm, which is one minute and 16 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 36 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 10 hours and 55 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 47 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 20 degrees at 6am. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical night around February 25th. Northwest wind around 6 mph becoming calm after midnight. In 2018, we had mostly clear in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 19 degrees. The record low of -16 occurred back in 1972.

Tomorrow for the Save the Pine Bush Hike ๐ŸŒฒ will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 43 degrees at 2pm. Six degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 12th. Calm wind becoming south around 5 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had light snow. The high last year was 37 degrees. The record high of 69 was set in 2017. 6.9 inches of snow fell back in 1935.โ„

Looking ahead to Sunday, rain, mainly before 1pm. High near 50.โ˜” Southeast wind 7 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. Typical average high for the weekend is 37 degrees.

Looks like yesterday’s warmth melted away most of the snow and ice from my truck, so the solar panel is topping off the accessory battery keeping that healthy. Things should be snow free for the Save the Pine Bush hike.๐Ÿ‘That’s good as I’m tired of having to dig snow off the truck. I do also want to give Big Red a bath on Sunday, to wash off the salt, as I expect by then the salt will be off the roads from the rain, and I should be home Sunday evening before the salters are back out again, or so I hope.๐Ÿ› Next week looks cold and salty, but I plan to leave Big Red off next weekend.

This morning I had corn bread waffles and fruit for a change. ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ’ Last night though I fell off the wagon and had some burritos and chicken nuggets. I did go for the even walk after that, but I didn’t ride the exercise bike. I got back and continued to work on planning out the isolator relay control module building.

For the isolator relay control module I’m building for the truck I’ve decided to use a small relay rather than a transistor to drive it. I don’t have any PNP transistors and I have to switch the hot side to control the relay. โŒจ I decided to also integrate a Bluetooth module so I can easily check the battery voltages from my phone and are considering adding ACS 7212 Hal effect sensors to monitor current from the solar panel and load to the truck cap to see how much the battery is charging and how much load there is. I may start building the board this weekend and start testing things inside. ๐Ÿ”‹ Obviously I wouldn’t want to have a bug in the code and get stranded somewhere in the wilderness with a discharged battery, so test — test — test before wiring.

As previously noted, next Friday is March ๐ŸŒจ (NOTICE SNOW EMOJI !!) when the sun will be setting at 5:45 pm with dusk at 6:13 pm. On that day in 2018, we had partly cloudy skies and mild conditions with a few snow showers and temperatures between 50 and 35 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 39 degrees. We hit a record high of 66 back in 2017.

In four weeks on March 22 the sun will be setting at 7:10 pm (Daylight Savings Time),๐ŸŒ„ which is one hour, 33 minutes and 34 seconds later then today. In 2018 on that day, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 45 and 27 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 47 and 28 degrees. The record high of 81 degrees was set back in 2012.

Looking ahead, March ๐ŸŒจ is in 1 weeks Ides of March โœ is in 3 weeks, Earth Day ๐ŸŒŽ is in 2 months, Memorial Day Weekend Starts ๐Ÿ•๏ธ is in 13 weeks, Average High is 80 ๐Ÿ– is in 4 months and Dog Days of Summer ๐ŸŒป is in 19 weeks.

Pitch Pine

February 21, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Four weeks to Spring ๐ŸŒท. Ain’t that good news. It was cloudy to start out the day, now partly cloudy but clearing and 36 degrees in Delmar. โ˜ There is a south breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. There are 2 inches of snow on the ground but melting fast. โ˜ƒ It looks like the ice storm they were threatening did not materialize to much, it’s already getting nicer out. Maybe not spring but warm enough to turn the heat back down. ๏ธTemperatures will drop below freezing at around 11 pm.

Even on a dark mornings like today started out, โ˜ the lights in my bedroom continue to be quite bright making it easier to get up and going. That said, by getting to bed at a proper time and then the earlier sunrise ๐ŸŒ… makes it much easier to get out of bed. โ˜•ย Waffles and coffee for breakfast, took a shower, walked down to the express bus.๐Ÿš

The severe weather turned out to be a bust. โ˜”Some rain coming home but the treated surfaces weren’t bad at all. This morning the roads were fine, and the sidewalks weren’t that slippery but I think they could have used a plow.๐ŸŒจย By morning, it was partly sunny and the roads just wet. I think by the end of the day, the sidewalks will have melted away, with the sun and warmth coming today, along with a wind which will probably expose some bare spots on the ground.

Today will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 43 degrees at 12pm. Seven degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical day around March 12th. Breezy, with a south wind 6 to 11 mph becoming west 18 to 23 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 37 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, which cleared to mostly sunny conditions by afternoon. The high last year was 73 degrees. That’s the record high for the day. This winter though, it seems like winter won’t hit . 11.0 inches of snow fell back in 1929.โ„

The sun will set at 5:35 pm with dusk around 6:03 pm, which is one minute and 17 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 39 degrees. Breezy, 21 mph breeze โ›… from the west with gusts up to 33mph. Today will have 10 hours and 53 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 48 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 27 degrees at 5am. Eight degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical night around March 19th. Breezy, with a northwest wind 10 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph. In 2018, we had mostly clear in the evening, which became light snow by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 21 degrees. The record low of -08 occurred back in 1963.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 42 degrees at 2pm. Six degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical day around March 10th. Northwest wind 7 to 10 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy in the morning, which became mostly sunny by afternoon. The high last year was 40 degrees. The record high of 68 was set in 1997. 14.8 inches of snow fell back in 1893.โ„

After I posted my essay yesterday about not having Internet,ย I got yet another glossy advertisement from Spectrum Cable,ย trying to get me to sign up. ๐Ÿ•ธย I tossed it promptly in the recycling bin.ย โ™ปย I am quite happy not having Internet at home, it’s just obnoxious how they always try to get me to sign up.

I have to say that the Save the Pine Bush dinner last night was one of the most interesting ones I’ve been to in a long time.๐Ÿ“ข Ward Stone was great as was Keith Shue who between the two gave us a good background of the ANSWERS plant’s history and the troublesome future. I was very surprised to learn that should the state put a co generation plant in the ANSWERS facility it will increase emissions by over 50% over the existing steam plant, ๐Ÿญand it will be running nearly all the time compared to the steam plant that only runs part time, especially in modest weather.โ™จ

I really like the improvements to Google Maps on the transit๐ŸšŒ front – I finally upgraded the app which doesn’t happen automatically as I have limited space.๐Ÿ“ฒ I like how the app is cleaner with transit information, tells you in big numbers how long you have to wait, how late the bus is running compared to what it’s scheduled to arrive at. Just update Google Maps and try out the app. Mine doesn’t update automatically, as my phone is always short of memory. I also am finding the battery isn’t a holding a charge very long. I may have to think about plunking down $50 for a new phone come summer. But I will have gotten 2 years out of the Tracphone, which is pretty good for those cheap phones that are just landfill fodder — although even expensive phones these days are basically the same thing.ย ๐Ÿ—‘

I am continuing to work on figuring out on how to build my smart relay for my truck.ย It makes a lot of sense to integrate the GPS logger I built with it now that I think about it more, ๐Ÿ—บย and maybe also bluetooth so I can monitor battery voltages,ย ๐Ÿ”‹ย and the status of the system from my phone when I’m sitting by the campfire. Thenย  I was thinking I could use a hall-effect sensor with it too, and monitor the amperage coming off the solar panel, so I could easily see the power coming off the panel. But then again, that would make the code a lot more complicated. I have ideas, the thing I have build them so they can become more then ideas.๐Ÿค”

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. ๐Ÿ˜• Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 42. Calm wind becoming south around 5 mph in the afternoon. Going to be great weather for the Save the Pine Bush Hike, assuming the trails aren’t too slushy.ย ๐Ÿ‘ขย Although who knows how much snow will be left come Saturday, and the sand doesn’t always trap the water and muck too much. Sunday, rain before 1pm, then showers likely after 1pm. High near 51. ๐Ÿ’ฆย At least it will keep the heat at minimum over the weekend, assuming it’s not too damp and chilly inside. I doubt though I’ll be opening the windows, but at least I’ll save on heating, which is good because my bills have been kind of high this year Chance of precipitation is 80%. Typical average high for the weekend is 37 degrees. Above average for a few days then, cooling down for next week.

In four weeks, which is one month from now, is theย First Day of Springย ๐ŸŒทย  on March 21 the sun will be setting at 7:09 pm (Daylight Savings Time),ย ๐ŸŒ„ which is one hour, 33 minutes and 41 seconds later then today. Dusk is at 7:38 PM, which means I might be able to go to the park after work, if it’s not too wet or cold.๐Ÿž In 2018 on that day, we had cloudy and temperatures between 37 and 25 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 46 and 27 degrees. The record high of 78 degrees was set back in 1921. I know I am definitely looking forward to spring, especially once the snow melts and I can start spending more time in the wilderness camping ๐Ÿ•and having a nice fire or two.๐Ÿ”ฅ

Looking ahead, Spring ๐ŸŒท is a month away, Average High is 50 ๐ŸŒธ is in 5 weeks, Average High is 60 ๐ŸŒผ is in 8 weeks, Easter ๐Ÿฐ is in 2 months, Average High is 70 ๐Ÿฎ is in 12 weeks (cows like to chew their cud when it’s not too warm), Independence Day ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ is in 19 weeks and August ๐ŸŒป is in 23 weeks.

After Dark

Camping at Cole Hill State Forest, January 2018

In January of 2018, I camped up at Cole Hill State Forest in the back-country during mid-January. It was cold but not too bad. Nowhere fancy, but it was a nice night out in the wilderness.

Backcountry Camping

I built a small little fire and sat as the sky got dark.

Darkness approaches

I had soup and rolls for dinner.

The tent was warm.

Not too cold out, medium heat was plenty warm

The next morning I hiked back to the swamp.

The Swamp

It was nice little mini-mid winter camping trip. More of a vacation-ette then a real trip, but still sometimes you canโ€™t have the most exotic trip ever.
