I think they should go to alternating current for cars, and skip the DC part.
While it's true the battery has be charged at 12 VDC, and the starter requires 12 VDC, it seems like they should just keep the alternator output as AC, and step up or down the voltage as appropriate. AC motors are more reliable and simple.

According to this study of highway crashes, 62% of all fatal car crashes where distracted driving was cited as a factor was "day dreaming" or general distraction. Apparently driving is too boring for many drivers.
Automatic Emergency Braking to reduce the number of rear-end collisions will be required on new cars starting in model year 2018.
It will be interesting to see how this changes urban driving. Will it encourage more tailgating, or will it force drivers to maintain a safe distance from other cars?
