While I certainly welcome lower-cost solar panels, and would most certainly include solar power when I own my off-grid homestead, I am deeply concerned about the tens of thousands, and soon to be hundreds of thousands of acres of land being developed for industrial solar farms across the state. Information both on solar farms and smaller, more appropriate uses of solar technology.
Thirty-nine years ago tonight, President Jimmy Carter offered these remarks on television:
"In the year 2000, the solar water heater behind me, which is being dedicated today, will still be here supplying cheap, efficient energy. A generation from now, this solar heater can either be a curiosity, a museum piece, an example of a road not taken, or it can be just a small part of one of the greatest and most exciting adventures ever undertaken by the American people: harnessing the power of the Sun to enrich our lives as we move away from our crippling dependence on foreign oil."
"As President, I am determined that America will move toward the solar age with effectiveness and determination, with excitement, high spirits, and with confidence. Therefore, I dedicate, this afternoon, this solar heater, harnessing the rays of the Sun to the benefit of those who serve our country at the White House, with the faith that American technology will meet challenges that lie ahead and that we will build a more self-reliant and a more secure nation for the generations to come. "
Tariffs of all sorts are horseshit that distort markets yet raise little money. The US should eliminate all tariffs including the evil Chicken Tax, and focus on taxing carbon emissions. Free college and training can make it easier for people to transition to other good paying careers.
Electricity is a remarkably simple thing, but at the same time can be quite complex. Little things like a loose bolt can cause a world of problems.
"I've had this problem with my batteries as part of my solar power system at my off grid cabin. But I finally found the cause and you guys are going to rail me for this. Off Grid Living, baby. "
"Rebecca Cantwell of the Colorado Solar Energy Industries Association said theyβve never seen anything like this, with a few U.S. solar panel manufacturers now pitted against the remainder of the industry. Domestic panel makers want imports to cost more, providing protection for their products. That could hurt the rest of the industry which has grown because of β and grown accustomed to β cheaper goods manufactured in South Korea, Malaysia and Mexico. One Oregon company supports the trade case and wants import taxes to level its playing field. Tim Brightbill, who represents SolarWorld, said a surge of foreign panels has put more than 30 U.S. solar cell and module manufacturers out of business in the last five years." βThese remedies would help strengthen the industry not only bring it back to where it was, but make it a world leader for decades to come,β Brightbill said.
"So why is most of the American solar industry taking a stand against the trade case (The two U.S. firms that initiated the case are subsidiaries of foreign-based companies), the tariffs on imported panels and other companies like SolarWorld? Itβs because the bulk of the domestic solar industry focuses on everything but making black shiny slabs of solar cells. They make the wires, electrical equipment and racking. They install large systems for municipalities or utility companies and smaller systems on household roofs. "Itβs those large-scale projects that stand to lose the most right now. John Hereford at Oak Leaf Energy Partners said he hasnβt closed many deals on projects past December β just when a tariff decision could kick up prices."
