Social Media

A look at social media and the issues surrounding this technology.

Facebook

April 5th may be the last time I update my Facebook page as the API will break again for me on that day. I am a bit undecided but I am struggling to get my Facebook Application πŸ‘₯approved, with the changing and tightening standards with Facebook. I know that Facebook is where the people are, but it’s annoying how much maintenance and adjusting of code I constantly have to make it all work.πŸ—£

Tinder

A few weeks ago I opened a tinder account to see if I could meet some interesting people online. So far I’ve not sparked up a conversation with anyone but I admit I probably should use the app more and continue to tweak my profile.

Now I get that Tinder is a site used by people seeking a one night stands but it’s also a way to meet a lot of random interesting people that I would be unlikely to meet in the Albany political and government sectors I mostly run into. Or so I hope.

I’ve spent the first half of my life traveling the back roads and the back country, enjoying the scenery and many an evening by the fire but it would be fun to meet up with new friends and maybe have somebody to spend my adventures with. I like my freedom and ability to travel but sometimes I get bored and seek a new chapter going forward.

How Your Notifications Are Lying to You and How to Make Them Stop

"Ding! This needs your attention right now, notifications seem to say. Boing! It might be an emergency. Or, just as often: Boop! Somebody you love might want to talk to you. We get hundreds of notifications every day, and they are almost all lies. Notifications are for the benefit of the app, the phone, the social network. They rarely benefit you. '

Thinking About Deleting Facebook

I am increasingly thinking about deleting Facebook or at least blocking certain friends from commenting on my posts and hiding other posts.🐑 I fully understand the advantage of Facebook – it’s where everybody is at on the Internet – but I’ve increasingly gotten annoyed with all of the political posts and how people are dragging me into the politics of the day. I don’t even like politics but people say such stupid shit on Facebook. Facebook is a modern day swamp!🐸

For many years I banned comments on my blog. This was intentional. I’ve always preferred the long format for blogging, the greater effort it takes to compose one’s thoughts. Facebook and Twitter encourage sound bites, not reasoned discussions of the issues.😑 Facebook also encourages the spreading of elite opinion without commentary, which I think is a problem. Why should the political elite rule our political discussion? Why can’t average people give their opinions and evaluate things based on what they know?

It really is boring and uninteresting to repeat the rhetoric of one’s own political party without analysis or discussion. That’s the norm on Facebook. Echo chambers are boring, they are all but pointless. 😲What’s wrong with criticizing your own political party when you think they are doing the wrong thing? What? Because the other side might win a point or two? Are you insecure about the convictions of your own political party that all you can do is mindlessly repeat their rhetoric like a drone?
