The โ€œOther Sideโ€ Is Not Dumb. โ€“ Sean Blanda โ€“ Medium

"Thereโ€™s a fun game I like to play in a group of trusted friends called โ€œControversial Opinion.โ€ The rules are simple: Donโ€™t talk about what was shared during Controversial Opinion afterward and you arenโ€™t allowed to โ€œargueโ€โ€Šโ€”โ€Šonly to ask questions about why that person feels that way. Opinions can range from โ€œI think James Bond movies are overratedโ€ to โ€œI think Donald Trump would make a excellent president.โ€

"Usually, someone responds to an opinion with, โ€œOh my god! I had no idea you were one of those people!โ€ Which is really another way of saying โ€œI thought you were on my team!โ€ In psychology, the idea that everyone is like us is called the โ€œfalse-consensus bias.โ€ This bias often manifests itself when we see TV ratings (โ€œWho the hell are all these people that watch NCIS?โ€) or in politics (โ€œEveryone I know is for stricter gun control! Who are these backwards rubes that disagree?!โ€) or polls (โ€œWho are these people voting for Ben Carson?โ€)."

Thanks to Scott Pruitt, any time I see a vehicle on the highway with flashing lights, ๐Ÿšจ I just assume it’s the top bureaucrat who is late for his lunch at the local Italian Bistro with an energy lobbyist.
