Not Eagle Pond

I thought the swamp I hiked back to was Eagle Pond but studying the map I realized it was a drained Beaver Pond below the the pond. Hiked to a ridge above the pond hoping for views – got nice views of the mountains along the East Branch Sacandaga River but not the wetlands. Still an interesting walk in the woods.

In the early hours of March 28, 1979, a system malfunction began what would become the worst nuclear accident in American history. What ensued punctured the public’s belief in the safety of nuclear energy and became an awful study in the consequences of communication breakdown during a crisis. This week, the fallout of who and what to trust when a catastrophic event occurs.

I’ve known Joe Seeman for years and he would be a great assemblyman. He has a tough race ahead but in the era of Coronavirus a lot is changing and its quite possible that he pulls it off.

The long weekend in the Adirondacks that was for me…

  1. Eat clams and sweet corn steamed in beer three days in a row (the bag of clams I bought was bigger than expected)
  2. Played many hours of Frank Zappa’s Waka – Jawaka and Hot Rats albums (so futuristic)
  3. Cooled off in the swimming hole in the East Canada Creek by the House Pond Trail (nice but currents were strong – might have gone skinny dipping after dark)
  4. Read Paul Theroux’s Deep South, an interesting book about traveling the backroads of the South (well until the low voltage disconnect dropped the load plunging everything into darkness)
  5. Laid many hours in the hammock watching the clouds (that is when I wasn’t reading)
  6. Went to the potholers on Tuesday (water levels very high, lots of people there)

It was a nice afternoon paddling from Stewart Landing to past Doldgeville Point. I think it was over 4 miles each way. Spent some time swimming at Stewart Landing and are shortly returning to Powley Place for dinner. Then I’ll spend some time at the Potholers then have a fire and enjoy the stars.

It looks like some time this spring the open meadows at Powley Place burned. I’m sure by the end of summer it will be green and more fertile then ever before. Pretty dry up here, with the lack of rain and low dew point for summer, so I’ve been pretty careful with fire.

June 25, 2016 Morning

Good morning! Happy Saturday. Finally the weekend! Mostly sunny and 78 degrees in Stratford. There is a west breeze at 3 mph. The dew point is 57 degrees. A very nice day for sure.

On this day in 1998, in Clinton v. City of New York, the United States Supreme Court decides that the Line Item Veto Act of 1996 is unconstitutional.

There are 2 weeks until Sugar Cookie Day when the sun will be setting at 8:37 pm with dusk at 9:12 pm. The average high temperature is 82 degrees, with a record high of 103 in 1936.

I lucked out and got the campsite in the sand plains of Powley Place. The last time I camped here was 2012, which shows how difficult this campsite to get, at least after getting up here around 7:30 or eight after work.

It was a beautiful night, cool but now too frigid. At quarter to midnight it was 60 degrees. By morning it fell to 48. A bit chilly then. Lots of stars above, especially with this campsite with the clear skies above. Some sites are full but many are empty. I think with the Independence Day holiday next week, many people just stayed home.

Today, I’m going out paddling and fishing on Stewart Landing, along the Sprite Creek up to West Canada Lake. But in the meantime, I’m heading for a swim once I get there. With the swim goggles it should be much easier swimming with my contacts in. I’m sure on a hot day like today, it will be packed!
