Recycling Is Broken
California proposes phaseout of single-use plastics by 2030
"California already has placed curbs on plastic items such as straws and bags β and this week legislation was introduced to phase out single-use plastic food containers and other packaging that isn't recyclable or compostable. The proposed measure also would apply to polystyrene foam containers used for takeout meals, as well as plastic detergent bottles. Assembly Bill 1080, introduced Thursday, would phase out the single-use plastics by 2030 and follows concerns about plastic debris going in oceans and on beaches."
Lead Poisoning Testing of Criminal Suspect
Ward Stone at the last Save the Pine Bush Dinner had a got me thinking about an interesting proposal:
Require lead poisoning testing of anybody arrested and accused of a crime.π
This seems like a really good idea. Withdrawing a little bit of blood might be painful for a criminal suspect, but if somebody has been arrested for a crime and is suffering from lead poisoning, it makes a lot of sense from a public safety perspective to know if they are being poisoned from lead — both so we can offer them treatment so they don’t commit further crime and to reduce future generations from engaging in crime from lead poisoning.

"National Park Service says a discarded Doritos bag from 1979 floated around the Atlantic for nearly 40 years before washing up at Cape Hatteras National Seashore last week. Some argue itβs impossible."
