Seal spotted on Hudson River ice just south of Albany

"Castleton-on-Hudson -- Ken Meyer was driving along and glanced at the Hudson River, where he spotted what appeared to be β€œa blob on the ice.”

β€œIt first I thought it was a goose,” the village Department of Public Works employee said. He stopped his vehicle, pulled out his cell phone and zoomed in on it.

β€œIt was a seal. Just hanging out there on the ice,” he said. β€œI’ve lived here for 37 years. I’ve heard of them in the area. Once one was spotted up by the Troy Dam. I’ve never seen one in person, though.”

Towards Outlet of Stockport Creek

While the Hudson River can be choppy and filled with noisy motorboat traffic, the backside of Middle Stockport Island is totally placid and quiet, a estuary rarely visited except by kayakers or other small boats. The center of the river is here is 30 feet deep, but there are also many sand bars and shallow areas around here.
