Elm Ave Park & Ride – CDTA

The Elm Avenue Park and Ride offers a convenient way to get downtown without the hassles of urban traffic. Located next to the Elm Avenue Park at the end of the Delmar Bypass (NY 32), it is serviced by several buses that will quickly transport you downtown.

There is a new, expanded schedule for the Elm Avenue Park and Ride. 5 morning buses depart there, 5 buses in the afternoon plus a mid-day bus schedule. Very convenient. http://www.cdta.org/uploads/Route719.pdf

Debian Celebrates Its 24th Birthday

Debian Celebrates Its 24th Birthday

Believe it or not, today marks the 24th year that Debian Linux distribution has been out in the wild. Next year, Debian Linux will be a quarter century old. While I've long switched from Debian to Ubuntu, the later still uses much of Debian's software, including the Debian Package Manager.

I am old enough to remember when Debian Linux was only 4 years old, and people ran kernel 1.8 on Linux/PPC. That was a few years ago -- actually two decades ago.

December 31, 2016 Morning

Good morning! Happy New Years Eve. 2016 is almost done. Partly cloudy and 27 degrees in Delmar. There is a south breeze at 6 mph. We had a snow squall come through but now it’s done  The skies will clear tomorrow around noontime.

Today will have isolated snow showers before noon, then a slight chance of snow showers after 2pm. Cloudy, with a high of 37 degrees at 2pm. Five degrees above normal. South wind 6 to 11 mph increasing to 13 to 18 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 37 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had rain and a high of 43 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 1895. 7.9 inches of snow fell back in 2007.

The sun will set at 4:32 pm with dusk around 5:04 pm, which is 51 seconds later than yesterday. Today will have 9 hours and 7 minutes of daylight, an increase of 45 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of snow showers, mainly before 5am. Cloudy, with a low of 32 degrees at 6am. Mild. 16 degrees above normal. South wind 8 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible. In 2015, it got down to 30 degrees with periods of snow. The record low of -18 occurred back in 1970.

We are in the dead of winter. There are 9 weeks until Average High is 40 when the sun will be setting at 5:49 pm with dusk at 6:17 pm. On that day in 2016, we had snow and temperatures between 38 and 18 degrees. Not forty then. We hit a record high of 59 back in 1919.

Explain National Monuments

The media does us a disservice in not fully explaining the pros and cons of the president’s decision to proclaim two new national monuments in the west. The public has a right to know the pros and cons of such a designation. An informed public is important, and no public policy is ever totally good or bad.

What does a national monument mean? Will the land forever be locked up as wilderness? What conventional multiple uses of these federal lands will be prohibited going forward. Do these changes make sense? What do the current users of the land currently think of the change? How does it impact the local community?

I don’t buy the argument that without a national monument designation the land will be turned into suburban subdivisions or intensive oil and gas development. I think that’s far from the truth, and I think the public dialogue would be moved forward if we had a full telling of the facts to see which side is right or wrong.

I’ve not made up my mind, but I would like to learn the full truth of the matter.

December 30, 2016 Evening

The record high of 61 was set in 1895. 7.9 inches of snow fell back in 2007.

While NYE will not be perfect, New Year’s Day will be mostly sunny, with a high of 39 degrees at 2pm. Eight degrees above normal. West wind 6 to 9 mph. And for the Monday after New Years Day, we will have a chance of rain and sleet after 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high of 34 degrees at 4pm.

Waxing Crescent Moon tonight with 13% illuminated. Might be able to see it in a clearing in the clouds this evening. The moon will set around 8:10 pm. The First Quarter Moon is on Wednesday night with partly cloudy skies expected. The Full β€œWolf” Moon is on Wednesday night. The sun will rise at 7:25 am with the first light at 6:53 am, which is 8 seconds later then yesterday.

Typically, you have temperatures between 31 and 14 degrees. The record high of 62 degrees was set back in 1974.

December 28, 2016 Evening

Well it’s the Hump Day Commute home. Traffic is moving well. Three days remain until New Years Eve. Then it will be 2017, and one year closer to my retirement in the year 2050. 31 degrees and cloudy here in the city. There is a west-northwest breeze at 9 mph.

Still feel a little sick this evening, body aches, stomach sickness, and a bit out of it. Probably just another common cold. So be it. I’m ready for tomorrow’s snow having a good winter coat but I don’t expect it to be a major winter event.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy, with a low of 26 degrees at 5am. Quite mild for late December. Nine degrees above normal. West wind 5 to 8 mph becoming calm. In 2015, it got down to 24 degrees with periods of rain and snow. The record low of -18 occurred back in 1933. New moon tonight. No stars with the clouds.

Tomorrow will snow, mainly after 8am. High of 35 degrees at 1pm. Three degrees above normal. Southeast wind 5 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible. A year ago, we had rain, snow and a high of 35 degrees. The record high of 71 was set in 1984. 6 inches of snow fell back in 1915.

It doesn’t sound like a major snow storm. Warm temperatures will minimize snow production and keep the roads from getting snow covered. Maybe 4 inches if even that. The snow will come down slowly and won’t be a major event at least in the city.

  • 1 inch – 9 AM
  • 2 inches – 1 PM
  • 3 inches – 6 PM

Tonight I probably will go to the maul to see if I can get another sportscoat for work. My current one is wearing out and I really should have two. At $100 a piece I might try to get two if in stock. I would order online but I don’t know the size.

In four weeks on January 25 the sun will be setting at 5:00 pm, which is 30 minutes later then tonight. In 2016 on that day, we had mostly cloudy skies and temperatures between 38 and 18 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 31 and 14 degrees. The record high of 61 degrees was set back in 1938.
