Debar Mountain Wild Forest

The Debar Mountain Wild Forest (DMWF) is located in the northeastern portion of the Adirondack Park, just north of Paul Smiths, and is entirely within Franklin County. The highest point on the unit is Debar Mountain, which, at over 3,300 feet offers a broad distant view of the high peaks region to the south. Some portions of the DMWF have been split from the unit to create the Chazy Highlands Wild Forest, which is located to the northeast of DMWF.

Trails on the unit offer opportunities for hiking, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, horse back riding, mountain biking and snowmobiling. Popular destinations within the unit include Debar Mountain, Azure Mountain and Debar Meadows. Other popular pastimes are hunting, fishing, canoeing and boating. Access to the unit’s water resources is available at Meacham Lake Campground and Buck Pond Campground, as well as on the St. Regis River, Osgood Pond, Jones Pond, Deer River Flow, Mountain Pond, and Lake Kushaqua. Vehicle access to the unit is provided primarily via NYS Routes 3, 30 and 458. Important local roads for access include county route 26 (Old Route 99), Red Tavern Road, Kushaqua-Mud Pond Road, Gabriels-Onchiota Road, Blue Mountain Road, and Oregon Plains Road.

First Rays of Sunshine

I purposefully picked this campsite, and parked my truck so that the first rays of the sun, would come through the truck cap, and wake me up around the crack of down (around 6:35 AM this time of year).

Ropes

These are the ropes and bungee cords I use to secure the kayak on the roof. Seems to work well on the kayak blocks.

Reduced to a Pile of Ashes

I really love it when trash piles start looking like this. In a couple of minutes, I'll toss on a few more logs, to make sure the rest of the crap burns hot, then use it to do some cooking in the dutch oven.

Campsite No 4

This was taken from the lake. It was great to be right on the lake, at this very remote Adirondack Pond.

Trash Box

Some previous camper left this box full of garbage -- bottles, beer cans, plastic, paper, etc. What's a boy to do? Burn it of course! I thought about picking out the beer cans first, so I could redeem them, but it grossed me out. So what I did, is stack some charred wood from previous campers, some of my own firewood, poured 1/4 gallon of gasoline on it, and tossed a match in. Once the garbage was incinerated, I carefully picked out the aluminum cans, bottles, and other unburnables, and tossed them in my bucket to bring home for recycling.

Tossing a Match In

Boom! Actually, it didn't really explode that much, as the gasoline kind of soaked into the trash, although a ran like a little girl, after dropping a match into the fire.
