June 21, 2016 Night

Good evening! Mostly clear and 65 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a west breeze at 6 mph. The dew point is a nice 43. Still a few hints of light to the west. Hard to complain about a beautiful long evening like tonight.

I went down to the park and finished reading William Kennedy’s O Albany. A good book but sad when Erastus Corning dies. I really got to get back into the habit of reading down at the park rather than killing time on the Internet.

I miss my old neighbors with the campfires they had out back. It’s not the same now that they are gone. They moved back to the country where they could have more fun with their four wheelers. Who can blame them?

Tonight will be partly cloudy, with a low around 55. Four degrees below normal. Northwest wind around 5 mph becoming light and variable in the evening. The record low of 37 occured back in 1940.

Tonight we have a Waning Gibbous Moon with 95% illuminated. I missed the Strawberry Moon last night, as it was in the clouds early in the evening, and I retired to bed shortly after getting home. I guess I missed the Strawberry Moon on the Summer Solstice which won’t happen again for another 40 years. I might never live to see it, although I guess it’s likely I’ll make it to age 74. At first I thought I would have to live until 85, which is somewhat unlikely but then I recognized my math mistake. But there are so many special astronomical events each year. July’s Buck Moon is on Tuesday, July 19th. I’m sure the commentators will have something will have something special to say about that.

Tomorrow the sun will rise at 5:17 am with the first light at 4:42 am, which is 17 seconds later then today. Over the next eight weeks we will lose about an hour of daylight but the average high temperature will remain in the low 80s with nights dropping down to the low 60s. Lots of pleasurable summer evenings remain. Some but not many will be as quite nice as tonight.

Tomorrow will be decent but maybe not as perfect as today. We will have a slight chance of showers before 1pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 78. Two degrees below normal. But who can argue with 78? West wind 6 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. The record high of 95 was set in 1954. The summer of 53 didn’t get to beat the record high for tomorrow.

Looking ahead, Altamont Fair Opens is in 8 weeks and Election Day is in 20 weeks. We still have quite a bit of summer left before the Altamont Fair starts to close out the summer months. That week is the last one before the evenings really start to grow longer and the mercury starts it’s fall decline. And 20 weeks until election day… let’s just git r dun as soon as possible. Trump and Hillary are so bad. Politics have grown so ugly in America this year.

Back to important stuff, the weather. The second half of the work week will be cooler, especially Thursday when showers come into region before the weekends heat.

Wednesday Night. Mostly Clear and 54 degrees.
Thursday. Showers are likely and 68 degrees.
Thursday Night. Chance of T-storms then Slight Chance of Showers and 54 degrees.

Friday and the weekend are expected to be quite warm and nice. In my book that’s Potholers weather…

Friday. Sunny and 82 degrees.
Friday Night. Mostly Clear and 58 degrees.
Saturday. Sunny and 88 degrees.
Saturday Night. Mostly Clear and 63 degrees.
Sunday. Mostly Sunny and 91 degrees.
Sunday Night. Partly Cloudy and 67 degrees.

Steamy and thunderstorms for Monday…

Monday. Chance of T-storms and 89 degrees.

June 21, 2016 Evening

Good afternoon! Partly cloudy and 79 degrees in Albany, NY. Breezy, 17 mph breeze from the west-northwest. The dew point is a very comfortable 45. A nice summer afternoon.

Tonight will be mostly clear, with a low around 55. Four degrees below normal. Good for sleeping. Northwest wind 10 to 15 mph becoming light and variable in the evening. The record low of 37 occured back in 1940.

Tonight the sun will set at 8:36 pm with dusk around 9:11 pm, which is 11 seconds later than yesterday. Tonight we have a Waning Gibbous Moon with 95% illuminated.
July’s Buck Moon is on Tuesday, July 19th.

Wednesday will have a slight chance of showers before 1pm. Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 78. Two degrees below normal. West wind 6 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. The record high of 95 was set in 1954.

The forecast continues to call for hazy, hot weather for our first weekend of summer. Saturday, sunny, with a high near 88. Sunday, only mostly sunny, with a high near 91. Typical average high for the weekend is 80 degrees. Definitely good weather for the Potholers. Really leaning that way now.

In four weeks on July 19 the sun will be setting at 8:27 pm, which is 9 minutes earlier then today. The average high is 83 degrees, and the record for that date is 97 degrees was set back in 1904. Mid July is still very much summer even if the sun sets somewhat earlier.

While running a few minutes late at work, I managed to catch the express bus home in time. Didn’t have time to visit the rest room before heading home so I have to hold it. Hah. Hopefully the road won’t be too bumpy.

It wasn’t a terrible day. I think I got quite a bit accomplished. And we move one day closer to the weekend. I find it hard to believe that the weekend after next is Independence Day Weekend. I’m working out in the field next Monday, so only 3 days in the office next week.

Going down to the park with a book to read this evening, and will also bring a book. Probably go grocery shopping and fishing down at the Hudson River on Wednesday and packing on Thursday. I probably will take the bus home and head to the Adirondacks from there. This way I can avoid the traffic, parking, and I won’t have to worry about the propane overheating. By the time you fight traffic and by the time I walk back to my pickup, the time saved driving in probably less than 15 minutes.

June 21, 2016 8 AM Update

Good morning! This Tuesday is the second day of summer. Mostly sunny and 69 degrees in Delmar. There is a west breeze at 13 mph. The dew point is a comfortable 51. Deep blue skies to the west but some clouds to the east. A pretty nice day is on tap for our Tuesday.

Today will be sunny, with a high near 80. One degree above normal. West wind 11 to 13 mph. A bit breezy but hard to complain. The record high of 97 was set in 1938.

Tonight the sun will set at 8:36 pm with dusk around 9:11 pm, which is 11 seconds later than yesterday. As I mentioned yesterday, the sunset is a bit later through June 26, even though the sunrises are happening later now for a net loss in day time. Today will have 15 hours and 18 minutes of daylight, a decrease of 4 seconds over yesterday. You’ll only notice it if your an early riser with a stop watch.

Tonight will be partly cloudy, with a low around 54. A somewhat cool evening. Five degrees below normal. Southwest wind 3 to 8 mph. The record low of 37 occured back in 1940.

On this day in 1970, Penn CentralΒ declares Section 7 bankruptcy , largest ever US corporate bankruptcy up to this date. Ultimately Congress would step in with government run Conrail which would later be re-privitized as a series of large regional railroads. Commercial rail has made a major comeback but Amtrak still seems to struggle especially in the rural west.

There are 8 weeks until Altamont Fair Opens when the sun will be setting at 7:54 pm with dusk at 8:24 pm. It will be here before you know it. Earlier sunsets but continued warmth. The average high temperature is 81 degrees, with a record high of 97 in 1936.

Still chewing over the weekend plans. It looks like it’s going to be hot, which screams Potholers in my book. I’m not sure, but I’m also interested in getting up to Stewart Landing and Sprite Creek / West Canada Lake to paddle and fish. Then again, both locations are close and doable. But then again, pool swimming at Mine Kill State Park and paddling the hydroelectric reservoir would be fun. I guess I will just watch the weather.

Enjoy your beautiful Tuesday!
