How signature costs could be leading to ballot petition fraud : NPR

"Michigan's election for governor was upended last year when several Republicans were removed from the primary ballot for problems with their voter signatures.

The news highlighted instances of suspected fraud in the process, which experts say could be encouraged by higher rates signature-gathering companies are now charging for their services.

As a result, states such as Colorado and California are hoping to crack down on bad actors in the signature-gathering industry."

When you look at election-related crime in New York, petition signature forgery and residency issues usually are the common. Residency often plays in when candidates run in districts that are poor and urban, where the candidate says they live in a neighborhood when they actually have a nice home in the suburbs where they actually live. In both cases, the stakes are high, which can encourage cheating.

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Feeling good after saying no. 🌧️

I’m really starting to understand what it must feel like when you quit smoking cigarettes, especially back in the 1970s when everybody smoked. The impacts of a healthier lifestyle I’m starting to feel, as is my sense of taste growth and I slim down but people keep trying to hand me cigarettes for just one smoke, or in my case foods loaded with sugar, salt and fat. Like my investments and everything else in my life, change takes too long but real change takes months, years and even decades. Mission Fifty. 8 ¾ miles walked yesterday.

Cloudy, damp and 52 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☔ There is a south-southeast breeze at 8 mph. 🍃. I don’t know it feels stronger than that. The dew point is 50 degrees.

Yesterday was a surprisingly busy day 🏢 which was good. Made the time go by quickly. Cut my finger 🖕 on some glass 🍸 I was going through in the recycle ♻. Since eating healthier there is so much less trash though more compost. Went to the store and gassed up my truck so I’m in good shape to leave come the weekend. ⛽ Gas prices have jumped back up again a bit with the oil production cut and summer coming sooner rather then later. But I do want to travel a bit, and plan to make the most I can out of summer 😎 while it lasts. And get out what useful use I can from Big Red. I might do more hiking this year, and more back country adventures, especially as my strength and abilities improve. 💪

Carrots 🥕 have replaced cookies 🍪 for camping, among other changes. It is going to be a different camping 🏕 without all the alcohol and calories, but I am actually looking forward to embracing the healthier lifestyle. 💪 Also looking forward to frying up that asparagus 🥬 and onions 🧅 I got and all kinds of other taste-rich things. I can’t do the frozen thing while camping, so it will be fresh fruits and vegetables rather then flash-frozen which I normally eat a home. 😋 Still changes it up a bit.

I don’t think I’ll get bailed out for Good Friday 👐 but maybe if I ask the parole officer nicely they’ll grant me early release by 4 pm for good behavior. That said, I think it will be too dry and windy for a fire on Friday night and might be rather cold for camping 🏕. Next weekend looks nicer at any rate.

Today is expected to be cold, damp, maybe rainy. ☔

It was definitely raining real hard out last night. 🌧 This morning it stopped for the walk 🏃 but I wouldn’t be surprised if it rains some more before the day is done. It’s good as I think we might have red flag conditions 🚩 with that wind come Friday, though I tend to think the ground won’t dry out that quickly, and we’ve had a fair amount of moisture lately, though the dew point will be pretty low tomorrow, Good Friday. ☦

I really want to get out of town this weekend, 🐰 but I’m not sure how far I will travel. My truck is getting serviced on Monday, so I would like to wash it by the end of the weekend. 👩‍🔧 I actually spilled some salt on my truck’s bumper unloading it last night, as I doubt I’ll need it before spring, and while I swept it off, it would be best to clean it up well in the mean time. 🚿
