The CAFOs of the Upper Black River Valley

CAFOs are mid-size (orange square) and large (brown square) dairies that have to manure management and water quality plans approved by the state to ensure they aren't over fertilizing fields and are controlling run off from their barnyards. Other farms are required to have CAFO permits, however dairy is the primary large-scale livestock industry in New York thanks to the state's cool and wet climate that is good for silage growing and dairy cow comfort. They say that Lowville rhythms with Cowville. The Black River Valley is known for it's fertile soils in narrow the strip between Tug Hill Plateau and Adirondack hill country of Independence River Wild Forest. The hicktown  of Lowville has all the smells of dairy country both good and pungent, haylage and silage, manure, and cattle more generally.

Marks Dairy, south of Lowville is one of the largest dairies in state, fed by thousands of acres of rich soil that are turned into silage, fed to cows, which are milked and turned into delicious cream cheese and other diary products. Lowville has the Cream Cheese festival every year, a product invented in Philadelphia, a few miles up the road.

Biden’s move on oil and gas federal leasing stops short of a ban : NPR

The report recommends hiking federal royalty rates for oil and gas drilling, which have not been raised for 100 years. The federal rate of 12.5% that developers must pay to drill on public lands is significantly lower than many states and private landowners charge for drilling leases on state or private lands.

The report also said the government should consider raising bond payments that energy companies must set aside for future cleanup before they drill new wells. Bond rates have not been increased in decades, the report said.

The Bureau of Land Management, an Interior Department agency, should focus leasing offers on areas that have moderate to high potential for oil and gas resources and are close to existing oil and gas infrastructure, the report said.

Weather Update – November 27, 2021

Cold with that wind but hopefully sunnier ❄

That wind is howling around and it’s going to be a cold one today but hopefully sunnier later and maybe warmer weather later in the week. β˜€ I might go out hiking today down in the Normans Kill Gorge but I think I will want to bundle up as it’s pretty cold with that wind that is howling around. That 14 degree wind chill seems to be accurate — it’s whipping around outside.

After Wednesday, I won’t have my truck 🚘 until my tires come in and truck is inspected but I’m hoping that will be soon. I’m not planning on having it next week or being able to get out of town next week. But maybe the following week if it’s not too cold and windy — or a ton of snow comes. It’s December and getting out gets more difficult. Honestly though, I don’t mind a few weeks closer to home where I can save on gas and other expenses I have during the summer months when I’m traveling.

Good Morning – November 27, 2021

Good morning! Happy Saturday after Thanksgiving. 🌨️

Cars have snow on their roofs and the wind is whipping around but it’s not really sticking to the pavement. But that wind is really bowling around. Everything though is icy and frozen and I’m sure the roads have a shit ton of road salt on them.

Cloudy and 27 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ There is a west-northwest breeze at 15 mph. πŸƒ with gusts up to 26 mph πŸ’¨πŸ’¨πŸ’¨. The current wind chill is 15. There is a dusting of snow on the ground. β˜ƒ ️Things will start to thaw out at around 11 am. 🌑️

Yesterday was cold and damp, I decided to stay home as I was cold and the rain β˜” stuck around much longer than I expected. I ended up working on and studying some code. Then doing some reading πŸ“–. Lately I’ve not been as good about at working this year.

I have to say my pantry is as bare as I can remember in recent years, 🍞 so I really need to get to the grocery store. Not Walmart because I’m sure it will crowded. 🍳 I have to admit I really struggled to come up with a breakfast this morning, ended up finding some canned corn, eggs and old seasonings, and it wasn’t too bad. I’ve been avoiding the stores, both due to crowds yesterday, and because I have no fuel in my truck. But I have to go today, as there is literally nothing to eat around home.

I also need to get to the library πŸ“š to get books and return the ones I have, and maybe hop on the internet for a while with my laptop. πŸ’» I might work from my truck as I hate wearing muzzle in the library. 😷 I’d rather sit in the cold, and work from there, at least I don’t feel so muzzled and it’s quieter in my truck. I do need to run in though to return the books.

This morning, my laptop burned up 175 MB of data πŸ‘¨‍πŸ’» while I was in the bathroom, grabbing system software updates. πŸ’© After that, I discovered there actually is a Meter Connection option in Network Manager that can be set to do something like Window’s Metered Network Connection that blocks apt-get from updating software in the background. One of the great things about Linux is it can update things without slowing the computer or require a reboot, but it sucks when it uses up your limited bandwidth when you are taking a crap. πŸ€–

Maybe on Sunday after I see the folks, I’ll run to Walmart to fully stock up my pantry, 🐟 and then wash my truck at the truck wash place. I want to make sure I have a well-stocked pantry, as I don’t know if I will have a vehicle after Tuesday, waiting for those damn times to come in.
