Why Do Smart People Do Foolish Things?
We all probably know someone who is intelligent but does surprisingly stupid things. My family delights in pointing out times when I (a professor) make really dumb mistakes. What does it mean to be smart or intelligent? Our everyday use of the term is meant to describe someone who is knowledgeable and makes wise decisions, but this definition is at odds with how intelligence is traditionally measured. The most widely known measure of intelligence is the intelligence quotient, more commonly known as the IQ test, which includes visuospatial puzzles, math problems, pattern recognition, vocabulary questions and visual searches.

June 25, 2021 Morning
Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Thank God, it’s been a long week, especially since it’s such a pain without the express bus π in the evenings. Three weeks to Last Sunset After 8:30 PM π. Mostly sunny and 65 degrees in Delmar, NY. π Calm wind. The dew point is 52 degrees. One more cool day before the sweltering weather of next week.
A nice morning, but I didn’t get as early of a start as I probably should have. π΄ I had some trouble with a contact lens last night π and my eyes were kind of irritated but I got up and going late. But the pancakes π₯ and coffee helped β but based on the late hour, I decided to take a nature walk around the Swift Wetland Preserve πΈ rather then go for a longer hike out around the High School like I do most mornings. It was kind of a neat hike though, watching a cat bird and weasel duke it out, probably over some eggs in the Cat Bird’s nest. πΏ
It was a quiet day yesterday in the office π’ and I didn’t mind it much. It was kind of busy preparing a project but my office is still downstairs while the unit upstairs that I supervise, so with the split shift with remote work π» part time it’s really quiet. π€« I do like being in the office part time. But alas the pandemic is over π· πΎ π and it won’t be long before I’m back in the office a lot more. I went down to the park and read π until nine o’clock and it was pretty dark out. π¦ Saw a lot of bats which is good because their populations have been so decimated by the White Nose Infection and they eat a shit ton of bugs.

Solar noon π is at 12:59 pm with sun having an altitude of 70.8Β° from the due south horizon (-0.1Β° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour π starts at 7:55 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (297Β°). πΈ The sunset is in the west-northwest (304Β°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:38 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 27 seconds with dusk around 9:12 pm, which is 4 seconds later than yesterday. π The best time to look at the stars is after 9:58 pm. This afternoon I have my counseling session π¨π»ββοΈ and I am really not looking forward to it, as I realize that I am not ready to face some hard truth, but it’s scheduled and on the calendar π and I have to attend. I’m doing it for a better tomorrow no matter how unpleasant it is as I confront thoughts π I don’t want to confront but I really need to. I’ve done my homework π and I’m an adult so I’ll get it done. I’m at a point where I need to continue on, like it or not. It’s for a better tomorrow I tell myself. Change is good.
Tonight will be mostly cloudy π₯, with a low of 64 degrees at 3am. Four degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 64 at 5am. South wind around 7 mph. On this day in 1998, in Clinton v. City of New York, the United States Supreme Court decides that the Line Item Veto Act of 1996 is unconstitutional. β Congress can not give the President the power to strike appropriations that it has granted, despite it being the appropriator. New York City challenged the decision after President Clinton knocked off a few of it’s line item appropriations added by a local congressman.
