How to Identify A Recession Before It’s Official – Bloomberg

As the U.S. nears a record-long expansion in July, the conversation is increasingly turning to when it will all end.

Recessions are inherently hard to spot. The National Bureau of Economic Research’s Business Cycle Dating Committee, a panel whose determinations of when expansions begin and end are accepted as official, generally waits about a year to make a call. By the time a sustained downturn is evident in data like payrolls or gross domestic product, a contraction may have already begun.

I’m thankful for public transportation

I’m thankful for…

Mostly reliable, generally well working public transportation that I can take to and from work and social occasions in the city. I don’t have to give much thought to drunk driving laws, I can have a few with friends and catch a bus home. When I’m tired after a long day at work, I don’t have to worry about dozing off behind the wheel or getting stopped for texting while driving. Time on the bus is my own, I can drown out the world with a podcast or work on a blog post.

Cyclist Crashes into Deer, Flips Over Bike, But Escapes with Minor Injuries

When cyclist Reed Soehnel came cruising down a mountainside, the deer that just happened to cross the road at the time had seemingly timed it perfectly. It appeared that maneuvering out of the way was not an option. Soehnel crushed into the deer with his front tire, flipped over the bike, and slid down the roadway as his bike tumbled past.
