Visiting the General

Heading back from the General, part in hand. Who would have thunk that they can’t look up GM parts by the Delphi. I thought GM was Delphi. Or at least used to be.

Life expectancy only increased significantly a hundred years ago or so. And contrary to popular belief, this change had little to do with modern medicine.

โ€œThe most important thing is not medication; itโ€™s sanitation,โ€ Lieberman said. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, people learned how germs worked and started doing things like building more sewers, boiling water for childbirth and making sure drinking water was clean. Countries also got better at distributing food, which decreased starvation, Vijg said. Subscribe to The Morning Email. Wake up to the day's most important news.

โ€œWe can thank public health far more than we can thank medicines,โ€ Lieberman said, noting that by the time antibiotic use became widespread after World War II, mortality rates had already plummeted. In 1870, the average person in Europe or America lived to their mid-30s. Life expectancy rose steadily from there, reaching 58 to 65 years in 1950.

Not that medicine has been useless. After sanitation, antibiotics and vaccines have been the biggest boons to life expectancy, partly because they fight diseases that became common when people started farming.

โ€œTheyโ€™ve basically got us back to where we used to be,โ€ Lieberman said, adding, โ€œThe average person who walks in to see a doctor is seeing them for a disease that we didnโ€™t used to get.โ€

April 11, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Next Thursday the Average High is 60 ๓Ÿ€ฎ. Mostly sunny and 33 degrees at the Elm Ave Park & Ride – CDTA in Delmar. Chilly spring morning, just waiting for 8:26 to roll around to head downtown. I think we are about to roll now. There is a north-northwest breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ.

Definitely lots of sun โ˜€ today, but chilly. Nice walk down to the express bus ๐Ÿš. Spring is only a few weeks away most likely though. ๐ŸŒทThe plan is at lunch time to take a bus up to DePaula Chevrolet and get that part I need. Pretty smooth commute on this rather sunny Thursday.

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 52 degrees at 4pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical day around April 2nd. North wind around 6 mph becoming calm in the afternoon. A year ago, we had partly cloudy. The high last year was 50 degrees. The record high of 87 was set in 2017. 1.7 inches of snow fell back in 1942.โ„ Heavy snow is increasingly rare this time of year but it occasionally happens as Midwestern folks are discovering. I guess it’s a break from them hauling manure for a few days. ๐Ÿ’ฉ

The sun will set at 7:33 pm with dusk around 8:02 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies โ˜ and temperatures around 48 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 13 hours and 13 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 48 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 36 degrees at 5am. Typical for tonight. Light southeast wind. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 29 degrees. The record low of 13 occurred back in 1874. I think I’ll keep the windows closed one more day.

I got to continue cleaning out the refrigerator tonight, ๐Ÿ  separating out the moldy food ๐Ÿฒ and the cans and glass for recycling โ™ป this weekend. Gross but necessary as I don’t have trash service where I live and pay by the bag for anything I don’t recycle or compost.

As previously noted, next Thursday the Average High is 60 ๐ŸŒผ when the sun will be setting at 7:41 pm with dusk at 8:10 pm. On that day in 2018, we had cloudy and temperatures between 47 and 33 degrees. Sometimes days disappoint. We hit a record high of 90 back in 1976.

Today if I have time โŒš I’ll post some of the maps I’ve been working on ๐ŸŒover the past few days. I’ve come up with unique ideas. I also have some essays, charts and other graphs to post ๐Ÿ“Š from things I’ve developed over the past few weeks.

I am keeping an eye on the really long range ๐Ÿ‘€for the Easter Long Weekend and it doesn’t look great. I have Good Friday off. I’m not hung up on heading out of town for Easter ๐Ÿ‡ weekend but I could decide to head up north on a Thursday night for the final and weekend of April and make my own long weekend trip depending on the weather.

I’m looking forward to packing my camping gear โ›บ in my truck and getting ready for camping season in a week or two to kick off. I like nice nights in the wilderness.
