Well that pizza crust reminded me of inexpensive Walmart whole wheat sandwich bread that was a bit soggy ๐Ÿ•

Well it was an experiment but probably rushing it, making it undercooked with the wetness from the thawed 3/4 lb of frozen spinach and pulverized tomatoes left it soggy. I’m not saying it was bad as I eat all up but needs refinement. On that note…

Good morning! Clouds after the rain storm and 68 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜๏ธ There is a south breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Some good bolts of lightening as I cooked breakfast with rain but then it stopped.  โ›ˆ The dew point is 66 degrees. The skies will clear around 11 am. Probably within a few hours I’ll need to drop the shades in my office so I can see my monitor. I don’t mind the sunlight, especially on a cooler day today.

I ended up deciding to ride to work after realizing I was too late to catch the early express downtown ๐Ÿšต, as it wasn’t too wet this morning, after the storm pulled away and the radar showed all clear. But if we get rain this evening or it’s too hot, I can always throw Blackie back on bus and take it home — but it’s rather ride, burn the 500 calories and save my buck thirty. ๐ŸšŒ I figure in most cases when it’s nicer out, it’s best to take Blackie at least one way, as before you know it there will be snow on the ground, I’ll have to dress up for work, or actually have a good excuse for not riding in. That said, I’m kind of looking forward to moving over to the new office in North Albany, as Erie Boulevard is a much easier, flatter ride then the Madison Street hill, past Hill Cafe. Plus none of the serious traffic like on Madison Avenue. Won’t get rid of the Normans Kill Gorge climb in the evening commute, but that’s part of the calorie burning exercise.

Got my 36 inch jeans on ๐Ÿ‘– and they fit pretty darn nicely. I almost could have gotten 34s, but these will do for now, as who knows where things will be in a few months. With some of those nicely-fitting shirts I got from the Salvation Army, I look pretty sharp compared to the baggie jeans and oversized t-shirts I often wear, though I’m getting more fitting clothes, but most of that currently is just shorts and hand-me-down t-shirts from dad. ๐Ÿ‘• I think now that I have better fitting clothes, it won’t look like I’ve lost an excessive amount of weight, and that will hush up the critics. Now the key is just keeping off the pounds, though I think I’ve learned enough about food and nutrition in recent months that I’m unlikely to go back to my old ways. Yet, it will be harder to ride to work when the snow flies โ„๏ธ as eventually the rail trail will be impassible due to snow. Plus when I move to the Erie Boulevard office, I won’t have the 18 flights of stairs to climb or that hard climb up the Madison Street, not that I’ll necessarily miss the later especially with the traffic.

Today will have showers and thunderstorms before 11am, then a slight chance of showers between 11am and 2pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. ๐ŸŒฆ High of 77 degrees at 2pm. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 5th. Maximum dew point of 68 at 9am. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ South wind 5 to 13 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. It was very sticky. The high last year was 90 degrees. The record high of 98 was set in 1953.

I think yesterday’s pizza would have been better, ๐Ÿ• had I baked the crust even further — more then 8 or 10 minutes before adding the spinach and sauce, and maybe boiled down the pulverized tomatoes ๐Ÿ… before applying them as sauce. I didn’t think the crust was a garlicly as I had hoped, and maybe I could have added more olive oil to the mix, though I didn’t want lard it up with too much saturated fat or calories. The loads of spinach were good, and the cottage cheese added flavor, and it was good to use up many of the tomatoes I had where starting to get soft and in some cases moldy in part of them. I think next time I’ll try preparing in advance with the addition of yeast, ๐Ÿž maybe a little of Stevia for sweetness and maybe less oil. And make sure the crust is fully baked before adding toppings, and as then boil down the sauce in advance to make it thicker. Definitely felt full after this meal though, and I went for a five mile bike ride ๐Ÿšด‍โ™€๏ธ after eating, around the Nature Trail in the park, ๐Ÿธ then down Glenmont Road to the other part of Elm Avenue and back home before it was completely dark out at eight. ๐ŸŒƒ

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:57 pm with sun having an altitude of 56.4° from the due south horizon (-14.4° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:58 pm with the sun in the west (277°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (283°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:36 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 58 seconds with dusk around 8:03 pm, which is one minute and 41 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Full ๐ŸŒ Moon in the east-southeast (110°) at an altitude of 3° from the horizon, 226,455 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:40 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 70 degrees. The dew point will be 60 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 13 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 18 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 45 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŽ‘ , with a low of 57 degrees at 5am. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 3rd. Maximum dew point of 61 at 6pm. Going to sweat this evening on the bike ride home, especially with long-sleeved shirt and jeans but I’ll take my time. ๐Ÿšฒ Northwest wind 8 to 10 mph. In 2022, we had light rain in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 66 degrees. The record low of 37 occurred back in 1965.

I put some red lentils to soak in the refrigerator today, ๐Ÿ› this evening I will drain, and try running them through the food processor again with some sea salt, for a second attempt at making red lentil wraps. I have generally avoided wraps as I think they’re extra calories and carbs for no reason, but I could see different things I could make up with them too. Somehow I don’t have turmeric in my pantry despite shopping at Farmer’s India Market on Saturday, but I should get some so I can make dhal up as it’s an healthy option. I need eggs, ๐Ÿฅš I could get them with the Turmeric this afternoon commute, though I’m a bit hesitant to buy eggs and then ride home with the bumps, ๐Ÿฃ as often it’s a bit rougher riding in the basket then in an an automobile. Plus if I wait until Friday I can get farm-fresh eggs at Samdil Farm, which I was surprised are only selling for $3 a dozen, probably because they mill their own chicken feed from farm-grown grain that is primarily for their dairy operation. ๐Ÿ“ But then again, I don’t really need any more food, my refrigerator is full and I don’t want things to start going bad. Maybe next week when I back from camp I can try dhal.

Tonight I’m going to start packing for the Labor Day Weekend. ๐Ÿ• There is only so much I can do this soon but the more I have ready, the less to do tomorrow, and then I can get to bed early ๐Ÿ›Œ and be up and on the road before seven come Friday. Then to Samdil Farm early, which is a bit out of the way but worth it, Johnstown Walmart for any other miscellaneous supplies and hopefully to that campsite I want by nine. ๐ŸŽช

Then when I get up to camp, by mine, the plan is clear: ๐ŸŽช Set up the tent, then chill, as I have day off and I’m not remote working. ๐Ÿšฒ Spend the afternoon riding dirt and gravel, see how many bears ๐Ÿป and wildlife I can see along the way. Cook up some shrimp, squash and other goodies, eat sweet corn. ๐Ÿฆ ๐ŸŒฝ Hammock time, and kayak and swim time, especially come Labor Day. No need to rush home on Labor Day, as I’m not visiting my parents this weekend though I want to be home by 8 PM so I’m not driving home in the dark. But that leaves a lot of day to poke around and have fun in the greater Speculator-area.

A picture perfect Labor Day Weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Friday, sunny, with a high near 77. Light north wind. Max dew point of 53. Very nice. Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 80. Maximum dew point of 60 at 4pm. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 85. Maximum dew point of 66 at 4pm. Monday, sunny and 89 degrees with a maximum dew point of 69 at 4 pm. A bit sticky for sure. Typical average high for the weekend is 79 degrees. ๐Ÿ‚ That said, it won’t be long before we start seeing a lot of color up north. Not sure, I could be back up there in three or four weeks to take in autumn’s colors.

On this day in 1967, Thurgood Marshall is confirmed as the first African American Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. โš– Had to have been quite the step forward in the country at the time, but now seems so long ago, with Justice Clarence Thomas long ago now replacing him. And in 1974, a powerful bomb explodes at the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries headquarters in Marunouchi, Tokyo, Japan. ๐Ÿ’ฃ Eight are killed, 378 are injured. Eight left-wing activists are arrested on May 19, 1975 by Japanese authorities. Usually it’s right wingers these days blowing up shit. But who knows if Trump is reelected not that I think it’s likely to happen at this point.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until More Night then Day ๐ŸŒŒ when the sun will be setting at 6:46 pm with dusk at 7:12 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 68 and 50 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 70 degrees. We hit a record high of 89 back in 2017.

Thomas Cole Mountain

Two weekends ago I went out hiking on a portion of the Blackhead Range, known for it’s Rooster Comb that it visible from most of the Catskills and Albany. Heading down there, I missed the turn-off to Barnum Road, which is a side road marked with a “Forest Preserve Access” sign from County Route 40, just as you head south out of Maplecrest.

Finally Found the Trailhead

The first part of the trail follows the right of way of the Old Barnum Road, until you access the Blackhead mountain Wilderness, and the kiosk welcoming you to the trail.

Last full day in West Virginia

Don’t delay, time is limited! So it would seem as tomorrow at this point I’ll be heading back north again. Days go by too quickly it seems.

Good morning! Already Friday! Emotions are very different on vacation then when doing the work week thing. Mostly cloudy and 53 degrees in Canaan Heights, West Virginia. There is a southwest breeze at 12 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. This morning reminds me of a cool summer morning.

I am not as sore as I expected this morning from riding Canyon Ridge Jeep Trail ๐Ÿš™ on my mountain bike ๐Ÿšต yesterday. That road was so rough! And I was going relatively fast as time was going by so quickly with dusk ๐ŸŒ† approaching.

Yesterday was a fun but busy one. ๐Ÿšต Rode the old rail line 7 miles and 1,110 ft deep into the Blackwater River Gorge from Coketon outside of Thomas, then mostly carried my mountain bike over several waterfalls and cliff edges up the 4 ยฝ miles ๐Ÿšถ to Canyon Road Jeep Trail via Limerock Trail, a badly eroded old logging road.

Had a bone jarring ride to the Olson Firetower, and even more so on way back to Coketon. ๐Ÿ™‡Canyon Road is definitely a jeep trail with several washes, lots of mud wallows and a very rocky surface. Fun on a mountain bike but very bone jarring. Olson Firetower is an 100 ft Aeromotor tower, it’s quite tall as Firetower ๐Ÿ—ผ go and has good views from Parsons to Davis to parts of Western Maryland. Made it back to my truck at 6:20 pm a little bit before sunset.

In total, rode 22.6 miles plus carried the bike the 4.5 miles up the Limerock Trail for a total of 27.1 miles for the day. Busy tiring day. ๐Ÿฅฑ I got tuckered in Tucker County WV!

If I wasn’t so dang muddy and sweaty I thought about getting dinner ๐ŸŒฏ at either Hellbenders Burritos or the Purple Cafรฉ but time was getting late and the prior was packed. After stopping at Shop and Save I went back to camp โ›บ and cooked up chicken and vegetables. Maybe today I’ll do Hellbenders if I end up back in Davis.

Today will have a chance of rain showers ๐ŸŒง๏ธ especially in the morning and otherwise mostly cloudy โ›… with a high of 67 degrees at 3pm. 8 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 30th. Might see a few breaks of sun. Maximum dew point of 60 at 5pm. Breezy with a southwest wind of 12 to 17 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 61 degrees. The record high of 79 was set in 1963. 1.7 inches of snow fell back in 2016.โ„

Heading to the Canaan Wildlife Refuge today ๐Ÿฆ and maybe hike up to the Ridge Trail at Dolly Sods. ๐Ÿšถ The thing about accessing Dolly Sods from the refuge is it closes at dusk with a risk of getting towed ๐Ÿšง so I need to be back to the truck by then. Can’t delay. Some depends on whether it rains. It’s raining a little ways north in Maryland and Southern Pennsylvania. โ˜” If it becomes really wet I could see going back to Davis and getting lunch at Hellbenders Burritos ๐ŸŒฏ then spending the afternoon at the Tucker County library ๐Ÿ’ป looking at an uploading some photos. ๐Ÿ“ธ And maybe some of the mountain bike trails in the rain. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:40 pm with sun having an altitude of 34.7ยฐ from the due south horizon (-36.2ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 8.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 5:17 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (247ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (253ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 6:25 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 2 seconds with dusk around 6:54 pm, which is one minute and 25 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Full ๐ŸŒ Moon in the east (88ยฐ) at an altitude of 11ยฐ from the horizon, 230,268 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 6:59 pm. At sunset, look for cloudy skies and temperatures around 57 degrees. The dew point will be 60 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 6 mph. Tomorrow will have 10 hours and 32 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 37 seconds over today.

Tonight will be cloudy โ˜๏ธ, with a low of 49 degrees at 4am. 12 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around September th. Maximum dew point of 60 at 6pm. South wind around 6 mph. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 35 degrees. The record low of 18 occurred back in 1974.

Governor Ronald Reagan in 1964 delivers a speech on behalf of the Republican candidate for president, Barry Goldwater. The speech launches his political career and comes to be known as “A Time for Choosing”. ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Extremism is no vice seems to be the rallying call of both political parties these days probably because all most party candidates fear in gerrymandered districts is primaries. ๐Ÿ—ณ

Tomorrow will have chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 64. West wind 8 to 12 mph. ๐ŸŒง๏ธ Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts less than a tenth of an inch possible. 18 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 16th. Maximum dew point of 63 at 11am. South wind 6 to 13 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 55 degrees. The record high of 78 was set in 1971. 2.0 inches of snow fell back in 1952.โ„

I’m now thinking ๐Ÿ’ญ about heading up to Paw Paw tomorrow to check out the Paw Paw Canal Tunnel ๐Ÿšฃ where the C&O Canal goes through a mountain in a tunnel. It’s a bit out of the way – further east than I planned on going but it would replace going to Seneca Rocks which I’ve done a couple of times but was considering alternative trails up that way. There is a National Park campground โ›บ in Paw Paw but despite being an hour closer to home, that still leaves a long trip back to the Albany. That’s why I might explore then head north to County Bridge or Asaph Run campgrounds in northern central Pennsylvania. Asaph Run is right on the Pine Creek Rail Trail so I could ride that Sunday if not too wet.

Looking ahead to Sunday, a chance of showers before 11am, then rain, mainly after 11am. โ˜” High near 50. North wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. Typical average high for the weekend is 57 degrees.

So if I end up at Asaph Run come Sunday, ๐Ÿšฒ the plan is to ride as much of the Trail through the Pine Creek Gorge as time and weather allows. I don’t mind riding in drizzle, I have one set of dry clothes left by then but not pouring rain. โ˜” Want to leave by 2 pm so I can be pretty close to home by sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ or at least pitch blackness driving ๐Ÿš˜ in the rain. Maybe stop at Annuto’s in Oneonta and get more apples ๐Ÿ, they were good. Doughnuts ๐Ÿฉ too but I think I’ll skip them this time for health reasons, lol ๐Ÿ˜‚.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until Buy Nothing Day ๐Ÿ›๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 4:27 pm with dusk at 4:57 pm (Standard Time). After all the money ๐Ÿ’ต I’ve spent on vacation, I won’t have any money to buy shit but I might go up to the Adirondacks that weekend to burn Thanksgiving calories ๐Ÿฆƒ and have a big fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ and maybe do some hiking. ๐Ÿšถ On that day in 2022, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 49 and 24 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 46 degrees. We hit a record high of 70 back in 2014.

Bend

It’s raining out again โ˜”

It’s been such a wet and cloudy year this year, especially on the weekends. Bad luck I guess and it’s only expected to get wetter come the weekend into next week. I’m going to see if I can untake off next week and cancel my October vacation at least for now.

Good morning! What day is it? Hump Day, of course. Rain showers and 48 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜” There is a south-southeast breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The skies will clear around 1 pm.

Out for my morning walk ๐Ÿšถ it’s kind of cold and damp ๐ŸŒง๏ธ though it’s not raining like it was earlier. Yesterday I skipped both my morning and evening walks, I wasn’t feeling it but rode back and forth to work. ๐Ÿšฒ Going to be another dark and shadowy day, I’m glad I have those bright new lights on bicycle I’ll certainly use them. I love how I can charge them right on the bike using a USB charger. ๐Ÿ”‹

Breakfast today was oatmeal – banana pancakes with shredded carrots ๐Ÿฅ• added to the mix. I like the additional fiber, almost adds a crispiness to the pancakes ๐Ÿฅž much like oil did back before I got into healthy eating. I made whole wheat garlic bread ๐Ÿž in the oven topped with everything bagel seasoning which is quite good especially dipped in balsamic vinegar. Pea soup with carrots and onions and lots of spices are cooking down in the kitchen ๐Ÿง‘‍๐Ÿณ, I need to run to Stewart’s and get milk ๐Ÿฎ and have a second cup of coffee โ˜• before laddling out soup and bread for lunch, showering and riding my bike ๐Ÿšฒ to work. Then climb the 18 flights of stairs and it’s off to work. I have a stack of cap grants to review. ๐Ÿ“„

Today will start out with showers then mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 64 degrees at 2pm. Typical for today. Maximum dew point of 47 at 5pm. South wind 5 to 9 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with sunny skies in the afternoon. The high last year was 65 degrees. The record high of 86 was set in 1949. There was a dusting of snow in 1987.โ„

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:43 pm with sun having an altitude of 40.4° from the due south horizon (-30.4° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 5:44 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (255°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (261°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 6:22 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 56 seconds with dusk around 6:48 pm, which is one minute and 41 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 7:23 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 59 degrees. The dew point will be 47 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 6 mph. Tomorrow will have 11 hours and 16 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 48 seconds over today.

I got the address verification approved which is the last step to collecting ad revenue on the blog ๐Ÿ“บ. It looks like if I maintain my current level of traffic and revenue I’ll get my first payment of around $140 come around Thanksgiving. That will help me defray a lot of the operating costs ๐Ÿ’ต and inspire me to come up with useful content and update maps. Plus my new data management system makes it much easier to update old maps. ๐Ÿ—บ

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 43 degrees at 6am. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 10th. Light and variable wind. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 41 degrees. The record low of 22 occurred back in 1964.

While I found enough socks for today, ๐Ÿงฆ today I either need to go to Walmart and get more socks for the rest of the week or the laundromat. Probably get socks as I am low on socks regardless, and maybe boxers too as most of the pairs I have are getting pretty worn, fit poorly as I’ve loss so much weight, and then there is a lot of kitchen staples I need that I was putting off debating if I would take off next week or not for vacation. ๐Ÿ›’ But with the forecast for Thomas WV next week I think today I will put the kibosh on next week’s vacation. ๐Ÿ˜ž Maybe next week.

Another rainy weekend on tap. ๐ŸŒง๏ธ Saturday, rain likely, mainly after 2pm. Cloudy, with a high near 54. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Sunday, a chance of rain before 2pm, then a chance of showers after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 54. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Typical average high for the weekend is 62 degrees.

I keep refreshing the weather page for Thomas, West Virginia ๐Ÿ—ป in hopes that the forecast for all of next week would move away from rain and 45 degrees for a high most of next week. ๐ŸŒง๏ธ But with no luck. If anything as the days grow nearer things get worse. I need to bite the bullet and see if I can work next week. ๐Ÿ”ซ It’s annoying that I’ll probably miss peak autumn but I really don’t want to camp most of the week in the rain. I plan to decide some point today, to give my employer enough time to know I’ll be in the office next week. Maybe I’ll take a future week off to go to West Viriginia or do it in a series of shorter vacation.

Looking ahead but maybe not forward, there are 3 weeks until Average High is 55 ๐Ÿ‚ when the sun will be setting at 5:50 pm with dusk at 6:18 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly sunny, warm, mist and temperatures between 69 and 54 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 55 degrees. We hit a record high of 78 back in 1950.

Watching the sun rise on this Columbus Day ๐ŸŒ„

Up bright and early as often is the case in the morning. Coffee and eggs just enjoying the quiet over the land as the sun rises. In the distance is the roar of an ATV as I sit warming my hands over the propane heater.

Good morning! Happy Columbus Day. โ›ต๐Ÿ‚Mostly clear and 43 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a south breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ.

Five o’clock I rose as always ๐Ÿ› and it was dark in the woods. I don’t mind, I like an early start and a good breakfast. ๐Ÿณ Annoyed I left the sweet corn ๐ŸŒฝ and onions ๐Ÿง… home but I had plenty of other good things to use in my eggs – I packed the jalapeรฑo I had plus canned ๐Ÿฅซ olives and chopped tomatoes. Kind of getting past the farm fresh tomato ๐Ÿ… time of year.

Columbus Day will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 60 degrees at 3pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 19th. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 63 degrees. The record high of 83 was set in 1949. There was a dusting of snow in 2000.โ„

Cold this morning with the breeze ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ but should get nicer as the day progreses. Going to ride Blackie ๐Ÿšต around Rennselearville State Forest on some roads and trails, have lunch ๐Ÿฒ and then head over to Partridge Run WMA for biking along the Switzkill and other gravel rides for the balance of the day. Hopefully it will warm up. Yesterday was kind of cool and wet at times, I retired to bed at nine o’clock as it started to rain as I sat by the fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ. At least my only time limitation today is getting home by dusk.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:43 pm with sun having an altitude of 41.2ยฐ from the due south horizon (-29.6ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 6.9 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 5:47 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (256ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (262ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 6:25 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 55 seconds with dusk around 6:51 pm, which is one minute and 42 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 7:26 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 55 degrees. There will be a southwest breeze at 7 mph. Tomorrow will have 11 hours and 22 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 48 seconds over today.

Today is the big blog renewal day. ๐Ÿ“„ I’m going to bite the bullet and get it done. I like blogging and telling my story. Plus the ad revenue has been pretty good, looking forward to that first check come November. And in a few months time I should be mostly made whole, when I don’t count my time. โŒš But it’s something I like doing. Kind of like my vacation next week.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 39 degrees at 4am. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 21st. South wind around 6 mph. In 2022, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 40 degrees. The record low of 25 occurred back in 1980.

That new bicycle lights are awesome. ๐Ÿ”ฆ Super bright for riding at night, no worries about hitting potholes or missing something on the road or trail riding after dark. I was so impressed doing a little bit of night riding on CCC Road last night. ๐Ÿ›’ While it might be dusk ๐ŸŒ† riding home from the grocery store tonight I should be good with that nice bright light. Plus I’ll have plenty of good fruits and vegetables to eat for the week to come. Still will need to visit Walmart probably on Tuesday for socks ๐Ÿงฆ and other supplies.

Yesterday I totally fell off the health wagon ๐Ÿป having a few beers, eating too many carbs ๐Ÿž and even maybe sneaking in a dart or two ๐Ÿšฌ around the campfire. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Big portion of couscous, chicken, celery and spices for dinner. I don’t smoke or drink except by the fire sometimes. ๐Ÿ Way too many apples and Greek yogurt. So bad! Got to have some fun, tonight it will be back to rice and lentils I think. ๐Ÿค” I need to get to the supermarket ๐Ÿ›’ and get more fresh produce tonight as I will have finished off the carrots ๐Ÿฅ• and celery along with apples ๐Ÿ and bananas ๐ŸŒ by the end of the day and I need them to eat at work tomorrow.

Rainy weekend on tap to start the October Vacation. ๐ŸŒง๏ธ Saturday, rain likely. Cloudy, with a high near 55. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Sunday, rain likely. Cloudy, with a high near 55. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Typical average high for the weekend is 62 degrees.

What a bummer. ๐Ÿ˜” I’m really watching next weekend to see how my October vacation is going to go. I really don’t want to postpone it due to rapidly dropping daylight, leaves and temperature. I can live with a rainy weekend as I drive south to West Virginia ๐Ÿ—ป but not a week of rain and high temperatures in the mid 40s. I might have to reconsider my trip – cancel it, postpone it or choose another location closer to home. I don’t know, going to watch the forecast for Thomas WV as it draws closer, the 8-14 day outlook suggests cool but dry which I’m good with if not too windy. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Looking ahead, there are 5 weeks until Average Night Below Freezing ๐ŸŒŒ when the sun will be setting at 4:36 pm with dusk at 5:05 pm (Standard Time). On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 49 and 36 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 50 degrees. We hit a record high of 69 back in 1964. Those days are coming much too quickly and I’ll eventually need to turn back on the heat and plug air leaks in my apartment.

I Guess Columbus Day Weekend Isn’t a Complete Washout ๐ŸŒง ๐Ÿค›๐Ÿป โ›ต ๐Ÿ‚

Totally bummed out about this weekend, but maybe I shouldn’t be. It didn’t rain until quite late into the night and this morning the rain has slackened up quite a bit. Maybe it will be nice enough to go for a bike ride to Voorheesville or Five Rivers — and it might be pretty to check out the Pine Hollow Arboretum which amazingly enough I’ve never been there. Almost rain free-enough to make me wish I had headed out of town to get camping. Maybe tomorrow but it’s likely going to be cold and windy, and probably still damp. We’ll see come the morning, I got to start working on packing and thinking about West Virginia sooner rather then later.

Good morning! Happy Saturday on this rather Rainy Start to Columbus Day Weekend! Rain showers, at least a few drops of rain here and there and 65 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a south-southeast breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 63 degrees. The skies will clear tomorrow around 10 am.

I slept in until 5:50 AM when my alarm went off โฐ got up and make oatmeal-banana pancakes to start off my morning. ๐Ÿ˜ต Lots of coffee โ˜• so I waited a while before heading out in case I had to piss up a storm, and ended up deciding bicycling was a safer option lest I needed to pee ๐Ÿšฝ or the sky opened up with rain. โ˜”

Today will have showers and possibly a thunderstorm. โ›ˆ Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Temperature falling to around 57 by 5pm. Southeast wind 7 to 9 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between 2 and 3 inches possible. Yeah, even though it’s not raining right now, I’m glad I’m not camping in that kind of crap. That’s a lot of rain. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 71 degrees. The record high of 89 was set in 1963.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:44 pm with sun having an altitude of 42° from the due south horizon (-28.9° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 6.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 5:51 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (257°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (263°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 6:28 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 56 seconds with dusk around 6:55 pm, which is one minute and 43 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 7:29 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 56 degrees. The dew point will be 54 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 11 mph. Tomorrow will have 11 hours and 27 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 50 seconds over today.

Tonight will have showers, mainly before 1am. ๐ŸŒง Low of 47 degrees at 5am. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 3rd. Northwest wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2022, we had partly cloudy skies. It got down to 38 degrees. The record low of 21 occurred back in 1964.

For tomorrow, Sunday, things may improve. โ›… A slight chance of showers before 8am, then a slight chance of showers after noon. Partly sunny, with a high near 59. Southwest wind 8 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. That wind will make it cool but maybe I should plan to do some biking and camping out of town. ๐Ÿ• I heard there is some pretty good color in the Catskills. And for Columbus Day, cool but mostly sunny, with a high near 59. South wind around 9 mph. That does seem like an improvement over earlier forecasts. ๐Ÿ˜€ My parents are out of town this weekend, so I won’t be visiting them this weekend, so I am kind of free to do whatever I want this weekend both days and I don’t have to rush home. I have enough clothes for the upcoming week for work, as it’s going to be cool and I wore t-shirt and shorts all last week, including the day I was off. ๐Ÿ‘– I will have to go to the laundromat later in the week though before I head down to West Virginia. Assuming that’s where I end up — if it looks truly cold and wet for the following week I could change my plans to be closer to home, but regardless I plan to camp for the full week. ๐Ÿคท‍โ™‚๏ธ

I am watching the forecast for both here in Delmar, Wellsboro Penna and Thomas WV, ๐ŸŒง and I’m not pleased with how much rain I’m seeing, though 7 days out it really is just a crap shoot. The rain numbers are quite meaningless at this point as so much could change. If it rains on my drive down to WV it’s not the end of the world, I don’t need to take a million different side trips. I’ll skip the Pine Creek Rail Trail ๐Ÿš‚ and the C-O Canal Trail ๐Ÿšฒ until later in the week or not at all, and mostly just drive down, and hunker down at camp. ๐Ÿš˜ Once I’m in West Virginia once camp’s set up the rain is less of an issue. Indeed, the 8-14 day outlook suggests especially in West Virginia in the mid-Atlantic states it might be a fairly dry week but cool. ๐Ÿ˜Ž I’ll take that as long as there isn’t snow. โ„๏ธ

I will be bringing my heater, and can hot tent if it’s really cold up in Canaan Heights but I want to have sunny days for hiking and bicycling, plus it makes the scenery better. โ™จ๏ธ โ›บ I hear they’re getting their first likely frost in the high country this weekend, so by next weekend it should still be close to peak color, without the crowds of Columbus Day Weekend. ๐Ÿ‘ช There is a reason I waited to later this year, plus it seems like autumn is occurring each year a bit later — and the High Country of West Virginia is more like the Hilltowns climate-wise then the mountains of New York due to the more southerly location.

I found my West Virginia maps including the Monongahela National Forest ๐Ÿ—บ along with the Pine Creek Rail Trail and several other Pennsylvania State Parks I may want to visit on the way down assuming it’s not raining. I am going to print up at work a few small scale maps of Canaan Heights and some other trails in the Otter Creek and Dolly Sods Wilderness at work, ๐Ÿ–จ assuming I can find a printer that still works in the office, lol. ๐Ÿคฃ No-ones going to care if I print up like four pages, assuming that the machine still works as nobody prints much anymore work-related. Then it’s just clothes and supplies to pack for camping. I will bring a fair amount of food with me, but only one cooler as it will be cool enough that most fruits and vegetables don’t need cooling, and I don’t eat nearly as much meat and dairy as I once did. ๐Ÿฅฉ ๐Ÿฅ› I’m not a vegetarian but healthier, whole foods that are low on saturated fats really don’t need as much refrigeration.

The past few days I’ve been getting a ton of blog traffic ๐Ÿ—บ ๐Ÿค– I think with people looking for places to camp and hike for the Columbus Day Weekend. One day I pulled in over $10 in ad revenue, and I’m in the low-$30s of what I’ve pulled in over the past week and a half of running ads. I think I will be close to $70 by the end of month, and while I won’t get paid until I rack up $100 in revenue, I think by December 1st I’ll probably be getting my first check ๐Ÿ’ฐ which could easily be above $130 by my own estimates, though it depends how much demand drops for my blog as the winter season approaches. โ˜ƒ Traffic usually drops fairly low in December and January. Maybe I need to do more maps relating to skiing and snowmobiling or winter camping locations. ๐Ÿ• But it will pick up again come April and May, having looked at my old web logs. It’s good because the $540 check to the web host goes out tomorrow for the next three years. Hopefully, within a year I’ll made enough from blog ads to be made whole, all while enjoying telling my story.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until Daylight Savings Time Ends ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 5:46 pm with dusk at 6:14 pm. On that day in 2022, we had sunny, warm and temperatures between 71 and 46 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 54 degrees. We hit a record high of 76 back in 1994.

July 21, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday, back to work from Speculator. Partly sunny and 59 degrees in Speculator, NY. There is a northwest breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ.

By working up here I could stay another day in the Adirondacks and if I camp overnight, โ›บ I’ll drive home Wednesday evening about when the weather gets more stormy. I’ve been off the internet all weekend as I had no service which is nice for a change, it’s good to be away from work and everything else. ๐Ÿ’ผ With the primaries and everything else going on it seems like most of weekends previously were quite busy.

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 77 degrees at 4pm. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 1st. Maximum dew point of 59 at 8am. West wind 5 to 7 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. It was humid. The high last year was 91 degrees. The record high of 101 was set in 1930.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:05 pm with sun having an altitude of 66.9ยฐ from the due south horizon (-3.1ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.6 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:50 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (293ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (300ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:32 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 22 seconds with dusk around 9:05 pm, which is 52 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent ๐ŸŒ’ Moon in the west-northwest (293ยฐ) at an altitude of 5ยฐ from the horizon, 232,588 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:49 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 71 degrees. The dew point will be 57 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 54 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 50 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 58 degrees at 5am. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around August 27th. Maximum dew point of 57 at 8pm. Northwest wind around 6 mph becoming light and variable after midnight. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It became humid as the night progressed. It got down to 66 degrees. The record low of 47 occurred back in 1970.

It was a nice long weekend camping at Piseco Powley Road, at times quite nice but for a while Sunday evening when the wind died down it was rather muggy. ๐Ÿ˜ฐ But when the breeze picked up it was pretty cold nice. Rained from a thunderstorm late Sunday night. โšก I’ve enjoyed being off the grid, having no cell service ๐Ÿ“ฑ or ability to take calls all of the long weekend. I’ll upload some pictures later in the day. ๐Ÿ“ท

Saturday I walked the closed portion of Piseco Powley Road. ๐Ÿšง The south bridge is damaged from the October 31st storm and repairs will be necessary for Stratford to fix the other sections. That said, beyond the substructure of the bridge being rebuilt and some fill and a culvert needing replacing, most of the tools to rebuild the road shouldn’t be particularly difficult or unusual to implement.

On Saturday I also patched the hole in the screen tent. ๐ŸŽช It isn’t pretty as it doesn’t quite match in color and I wish I had had gotten the fabric a little tighter but it provides a good bug free area for camping. ๐Ÿœ Bugs have been bad this weekend, especially the deer fly although not so bad in the Potholers and times in the screen tent have been nice. After dark and early mornings I’ve been using the hammock a fair bit as the deer flies aren’t as bad then.

The Potholers were nice in the heat ๐ŸŠ, I spent several hours laying in them and cooling off. I sat down there listening to podcasts ๐ŸŽงand just enjoying the cold water ๐Ÿ’ฆ and hot sun โ˜€. During the weekend there was a fair number of people there although I expect I would see a lot more were the road to be fully open. I am hopeful though that once the bridge is repaired, they can get the road repaired relatively quickly. I’m still thinking it might be done by hunting season. That will certainly make visiting the Potholers a lot more of an option come 2021.

Only one real shit moment at camp. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ On Monday evening after parking at camp I noticed something hanging out below the front axle like something was broken. Turned out to be just a root but I was afraid that I had broken something on my truck. Just a silly shadow of a root. Pulled it up and tossed it in the woods. This campsite is a bit of a mud wallow at the parking spot but has been as long as I’ve camped here. At least it’s very quiet here with the road closed heading south bound from the Potholers – the only traffic is those going down there.

I thought about moving down to Powley Place last evening so I could enjoy the stars โœจbut ultimately I decided against that. It was fine, I was in by 9:30 and at that point wouldn’t have seen many stars. But I did stop by Powley Bridge briefly this morning to see the new temporary bridge and observe what has changed since the October 31st flood last year.

On this day in 1925, Dayton, Tennessee high school biology teacher John T. Scopes is found guilty of teaching evolution in class and fined $100. ๐Ÿ‘ฎ Darn criminals ruining our country. The judge incorrectly set the fine, rather then letting the jury do it, so his conviction was overturned on appeal. ๐Ÿซ The law would remain on the books until it was repealed 1967. Also in 1983, the world’s lowest temperature in an inhabited location is recorded at Vostok Station, Antarctica at โˆ’89.2 ยฐC (โˆ’128.6 ยฐF). โ›„ They should build a pipe and send it up north to cool off people efficently.

Been doing a lot of reading ๐Ÿ“– while up in camp. Re-read Heather Thomas’ Raising Beef Cattle ๐Ÿฎ which is an interesting book on the ins and outs of cows. They’re pretty amazing animals which do pretty good most of the time on grasses, water, salt and some careful human hands to train them and take care of their needs. Beef cattle don’t have the complicated nutritional needs of the high performance Holstein cows ๐Ÿ„ used on most dairies.

Should be a great weekend. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 82. Maximum dew point of 59 at 8am. Sunday, a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 83. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 63 at 7pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 83 degrees.

I haven’t decided if I will stay all week in the Adirondacks. ๐Ÿ—ป Only three nights until the weekend so I could get a campsite near Speculator and work up here to the weekend and then go back to Piseco Powley Road. I’m undecided though because working and camping can be kind of tiring, especially if I don’t get enough sleep. ๐Ÿ˜ด

Looking ahead, there are 15 weeks until Election Day 2020 ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 4:45 pm with dusk at 5:15 pm (Standard Time). On that day in 2019, we had partly sunny skies with a few rain showers and temperatures between 53 and 30 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 53 degrees. I was really sick that day last year with Lyme disease. We hit a record high of 75 back in 1990.
