March 24, 2020 Night

Good evening! Partly clear and 38 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a northwest breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. There are 2 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธWarm weather and relatively soft ground has done a number on the snow. Temperatures will drop below freezing around 1 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

It was kind of a quiet day at work and gray outside. โ˜ The stuff I needed to do for work I was able to handle using my smartphone so I ended up staying home. ๐Ÿ“™ In the afternoon and evening I read a bunch of that book I got about Thomas Edison and went for my evening walk ๐Ÿšถ after making a big pot of macaroni and cheese with all kinds of fixings. ๐Ÿฒ I noticed that they spread a bunch of salt on the road tonight. How to wash my truck if the car wash is closed?

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 28 degrees at 6am. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 23rd. Northwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 28 degrees. The record low of 0 occurred back in 1875.

Tonight will have a New Moon ๐Ÿ†• . The Pink ๐ŸŒธ Moon is on Tuesday, April 7. The darkest hour is at 1:02 am, followed by dawn at 6:23 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:52 am in the east (87ยฐ) and last for 2 minutes and 54 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 46 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 7:29 am with sun in the east (93ยฐ). Tonight will have 11 hours and 35 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 54 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a slight chance of snow before 11am, then a chance of rain and snow between 11am and 1pm, then a chance of rain after 1pm. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 43 degrees at 3pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 14th. Light and variable wind. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Little or no snow accumulation expected. I’m hoping for a little sun, at least in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 46 degrees. The record high of 74 was set in 1910. 1.9 inches of snow fell back in 1960.โ„

Tomorrow I have a conference call midday and I’ll probably go out to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center for that then go hiking later ๐Ÿšถ at least on the loop road which won’t be so muddy. I got to order a new pair of boots, the ones I wear everyday are worn. I also need to amend one of my tax payments to the state so it has the updated SEFCU routing number. ๐Ÿ”ข

I am conceding that the president’s promise of the Coronavirus closures is probably a bit too optimistic ๐Ÿ‘พbut I think everybody is looking for closure on this chapter of history but it’s going to take a while longer especially as the illness so rapidly spreads despite all the efforts to slow it. โ›” Still I’m sure state bondholders are putting pressure on state leaders who are likewise seeing an enormous drop in revenue and the big cuts and tax hikes that will be needed to close the gap. ๐Ÿ’ต And I know a lot of people want to get back to work. ๐Ÿ‘ท

In four weeks on April 21 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (287ยฐ) at 7:44 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 31 minutes and 56 seconds later then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had partly cloudy, warm weather and temperatures between 72 and 52 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 61 and 39 degrees. The record high of 89 degrees was set back in 1923.

Looking ahead, 7:30 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ is in 2 weeks, Cinco de Mayo ๐Ÿค  is in 6 weeks, Primary Day ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ is in 13 weeks, Latest Sunset ๐ŸŒ† is in 3 months and Election Day 2020 ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ is in 32 weeks.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿฆ…Only 58 days remain until the start of Memorial Day Weekend!๐Ÿฆ…๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Setting Sun Over a Drumlin

October 22, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Two weeks to Election Day 2019 ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ. Gray and cloudy and 50 degrees on Delaware Avenue catching the late bus into work ๐Ÿš. Kind of a normal late October day in Upstate NY. โ˜ Dark and gray and smelling like cow shit. ๐Ÿ’ฉ Well, at least out in the country, the corn is chopped, ๐ŸŒฝ they gotta fertilize before the put in the cover crops. ๐Ÿ€ There is a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The skies will clear tomorrow around 8 am.

Nice mild morning, dark but that’s expected this time of year. ๐ŸŒ… It little more sun and less gray would have been nice, but it certainly was mild drinking coffee. I barely needed the heater this morning, it was 47 degrees by the time the sun broke.โ˜• Enjoyed my coffee as I sat out back with the dog, having some cereal as I took down camp.๐Ÿœ

This morning I was running late, caught the late bus in, ๐ŸšŒย as I took down camp at my parents house. Going to rain tonight, so I figure I wouldn’t want to camp in the backyard and tear up the ground unnecessarily.๐Ÿ• I don’t want to tear up the grass any more or compact it, and it’s my last day out there come tomorrow. I am glad, as I really don’t like driving. There is always school buses, ๐ŸŽ’ construction, ๐Ÿšง and generally traffic and delays to deal with. I used to drive a lot more, but now I really don’t like it.

Today will have a chance of rain, mainly after 4pm. Damn, should have brought my rain coat โ˜”. Maybe I’ll get wet going home. I can always change. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 59 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 19th. Maximum dew point of 50 at 5pm. Southeast wind 6 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 48 degrees. The record high of 86 was set in 1979. There was a dusting of snow in 2005.โ„

The sun will set at 6:02 pm with dusk around 6:31 pm, which is one minute and 31 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ Won’t be long until the time change, less then two weeks, then it will be dark an hour earlier. At sunset, look for rain showers ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 57 degrees. The dew point will be 50 degrees. There will be a southeast breeze at 9 mph. Today will have 10 hours and 46 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 43 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will rain. ๐ŸŒง Low of 50 degrees at 6am. 12 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 23rd. Southeast wind 5 to 8 mph becoming light and variable after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. In 2018, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 42 degrees. The record low of 20 occurred back in 1969.

Today in 1897, using a filament of carbonized thread, Thomas Edison tests the first practical electric incandescent light bulb (it lasted 13 1/2 hours before burning out).๐Ÿ’ก This was the technology widely used for decades, until the florescent bulb came out and later the vastly superior LED lighting. It’s hard to remember even when incandescent bulbs were common. Been a long time now that LED technology has been quite widely adapted, and even the old florescent fixtures are being replaced with LEDs. Some LED bulbs can last for decades, although the capacitors in the power supplies may fail before the LEDs themselves are buried in the landfill, or burnt in the incinerator or burn pile.๐Ÿ—‘ Too bad it’s so hard to recycle โ™ป these somewhat rare earths but they don’t do that much.๐ŸŒ

I keep hearing different reports for the weekend. ๐Ÿค” Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 54. Sunday, a chance of showers. Mostly sunny, with a high near 55. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Other models, namely Weather Underground says more rain coming in early on Sunday.๐ŸŒฆ Typical average high for the weekend is 56 degrees. I am inclined to go out to Charles Baker or maybe Stoney Pond in Madison County, but only if the weather is nice. I haven’t been there for a while. I would probably leave work on Friday around 2 or 3 PM, that way I can get set up before dark. But on the other hand, I wouldn’t mind a quiet weekend at home, maybe doing some more canvasing for David Bissember ๐Ÿ‘Šโœโœ… on Saturday and then hike in the afternoon. Maybe next weekend will be nicer. Early voting starts on Saturday, so I could vote this weekend if I wanted to git ‘r dun and avoid the election day crowds. Maybe Monday evening would best for me though. Ballot is a shit-ton long., although few are competitive unless you like casting protest votes like I do.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Election Day 2019 ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 4:43 pm with dusk at 5:13 pm (Standard Time). On that day in 2018, we had rain showers, partly sunny and temperatures between 48 and 31 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 52 degrees. We hit a record high of 75 back in 1994.

Christmas in October?

October 10, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Vacation is going by much too quickly but I’m excited as today I’m going to West Virginia through Sunday. Three weeks to Halloween ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ. Sunny and 42 degrees at the Buzzard Swamp Coop Mangement Area. ๐ŸŒž Calm wind.

This morning I started out the day with walk back to Buzzard Swamp ๐Ÿฆ. Beautiful morning with fog ๐ŸŒ over part of the Buzzard Swamp. I really do tight invest in a good pair of binoculars. ๐Ÿ”ญMaybe I’ll look at that for Christmas ๐ŸŽ„ sales time. Later it’s to Punxsutawney on PA 36 then Mount Davis Pennsylvania High Point and then Cannan Heights WV.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 66 degrees at 3pm. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 1st. East wind 3 to 5 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was humid. The high last year was 83 degrees. The record high of 89 was set in 1939. 0.8 inches of snow fell back in 1925.โ„

The sun will set at 6:43 pm with dusk around 7:11 pm, which is one minute and 38 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 63 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 11 hours and 21 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 43 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 41 degrees at 6am. Typical for tonight. East wind 3 to 6 mph. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It became very sticky as the night progressed. It got down to 61 degrees. The record low of 22 occurred back in 1943.

I set my alarm for six AM โฐ which was pitch black this morning except for the stars. ๐ŸŽ‘ I did hit the reset a few times more then I’m proud to admit but less than yesterday. The moon had set and it was cold but unlike yesterday, I was determined to break camp by eight to drive down to West Virginia. I saw the starting battery ๐Ÿ”‹ was at 12.50 so I started up the truck with a bit to be safe.

Not so cold this morning and I made only a small pot of coffee โ˜• so hopefully I won’t have to stop a million times on the way to West Virginia. I tried to leave early the previous day but it was so dark and cold and I had to the down the tarp and tent. Today I had a lot less gear plus I camped fifty miles to the south. Saved some dash cam video ๐Ÿ“น on my laptop.

Yesterday I decided to go to Warren Tops to buy groceries. I really needed ice and was running low on milk and cheese. I also decided to buy beer. ๐Ÿป It’s now sold at selected grocery stores in Pennsylvania but it’s a completely separate unit – you have to pay for it separately from the rest of the groceries and they sell non standard sizes – I bought a 15 pack of Budwiser for $12.98 no tax or deposit which is cheap compared to New York. It maybe not, I often buy 30 racks at Walmart for $19.95 plus $1.60 in sales tax and $1.60. But unfortunately without a deposit, I’ll have to crush the cans and bring them back to the transfer station for recycling โ™ป. Forgot how much Warren stinks like oil country – its a mix of crude oil, hydrogen sulfide with a certain amount of sweetness to the air. Actually camp smells a bit like that.

Then I headed south along US 62 stopping at the Tidoute Overlook ๐Ÿ“ท and then going to Nebraska Submergable Bridge. ๐ŸŒ‰ It’s kind of fun to see it again after seeing many Facebook posts of people exploring it while it’s submerged. Honestly I was surprised how much traffic goes over the bridge but it’s a pretty big shortcut to a lot of hunting camps. Hit a lot of construction ๐Ÿšง on US 62 AND on PA 36. They were paving PA 36, big delays there.

Not a lot of interesting country ๐Ÿฎ – some of the sections along the Alleghany River between Tidoute and Tionesta were quite pretty. I can get why that section is popular with kayakers. ๐ŸšคFlat once you climb out of Tionesta Valley, some farmland and some businesses supporting the pop business. Rather flat until I got down to the area around Cooks Forest and then timberland as I headed to Marienville. I did see a household burning trash, which is still somewhat common in rural PA but nothing like a decade ago. Some of that plastic stuff stinks, especially if it’s smoldering. ๐Ÿ‘ƒ

After that I visited the Cook Forest State Park โ›ฒ which had a fire tower and a path down to the gorge where the Clarion River runs and a nice picnic area around a historic tree planation. ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒ I took River Road along Clarion River. That road is narrow but beautiful. Almost hit a doe, ran up from the river bank and into the shadow. My tires squealed but I fortunately missed it. Reviewing the dashcam it would have been hard for me to spot it. Really in the shadow.

I was hoping to camp โ›บ at Loleta Grade campsite 16 which I like because it has good cell service ๐Ÿ“ฑ which makes the night by go by quickly and makes the remote country seem less remote. It also has a good view of the stars โœจ and would be good for solar. But alas somebody already grabbed it with their camper, probably a bow hunter ๐Ÿ™‡. They appeared to have solar too and probably cell service internet in their camp. That’s a much nicer campsite. This site on the Gurgling Run smells a bit like Hydrogen Sulfide from an oil well, I assume that’s what makes the Gurgling Run Gurgle. ๐Ÿ’ฉ And it not only smells, it gurgles. Plus I don’t want to spend three nights without cell service. ๐Ÿ“ฑ

It thought about staying here for three nights then going to see the Elk and drive the Elk Drive and do Hyer View on Sunday. ๐Ÿš™But then I would miss West Virginia and I don’t really like the campsite I ended up in. It doesn’t look good for me getting down to West Virginia in 2020 as it’s a busy election year at my other job and they’re could be recounts or snow in November.

So I decided instead to drive down to Thomas, WV for the long weekend, heading back to County Bridge Campground. ๐Ÿ—ป Heading down now to Mount Davis, Pennsylvania High Point via Penna 36 and US 219. More of that highway is built through Somerset and some of those new expressway bridges look like they’ll have amazing views. It’s a lot of driving but less than I really had in my original plan as I’m not going down to the New River Gorge – just Dolly Sods one day and the other – the cloudy and potentially rainy Saturday I’ll do Maryland High Point and Blackwater Falls. But it’s fine. Sunday I’ll take Cooridor H, visit the Mount Storm Lake ๐Ÿญ and the massive power plant and then take to the road Keyser and then to Cumberland Maryland, then take US 220 and Interstate 99 to Mount Pisagh State Park for a drive with hopefully good colors then overnight at County Bridge outside of Troy.

I will pitch the tent down in West Virginia with the heater. No fires down there due to continuing fire ban ๐Ÿ”ฅ but I’ll save the paper plates and other burnables and have a fire the last night when overnight in Pennsylvania. I also have a little bit of kiln dried wood to burn at County Bridge. It’s fine – most nights I’ve been laying back in the hammock fairly early and letting the fire go out. It’s going to quite mild and the tent heater will be toasty. Not having to gather wood means that I’ll have more time for relaxing and reading ๐Ÿ“–. Fires are really a lot of work and kind of a waste of fire wood.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Halloween ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 6:13 pm with dusk at 6:41 pm. On that day in 2018, we had mostly cloudy, patches of fog and temperatures between 61 and 28 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 54 degrees. We hit a record high of 73 back in 1946.

Towards Big Moose Mountain

October 8, 2019 9 PM Update

Good evening! Clear and 48 degrees at the Allegheny National Forest. There is a east breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ.

Today was a nice quiet day. ๐Ÿšถ I did a nice hike from Kinzua Beach to Rimrock and walked on the Cornplanter Bridge. ๐ŸŒ‰ After the hike I sat down by the reservoir for a while with the third book of vacation, this one on the National Security State. I got back to camp, cooked dinner and built a big fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ before laying back in the hammock. The ample sun today meant the solar panel put out 192 watt hours while I was parked down there – not bad figuring its a 100 watt panel and its the October sun. ๐Ÿ”‹ That extra battery helps a lot at camp.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 41 degrees at 4am. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 10th. East wind 5 to 7 mph. In 2018, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It became humid as the night progressed. It got down to 62 degrees. The record low of 27 occurred back in 2001.

Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous Moon ๐ŸŒ” with 87% illuminated. The moon will set at 2:37 am. The ๐ŸŒ• is on Saturday night with mostly clear skies. The sun will rise at 7:19 am with the first light at 6:51 am, which is one minute and 6 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 12 hours and 34 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 46 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 65 degrees at 4pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 4th. East wind 5 to 7 mph. A year ago, we had light drizzle in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 81 degrees. The record high of 83 was set in 1949. There was a dusting of snow in 2000.โ„

Whats the next step I ask myself? I was thinking I really do crave the scenic beauty of West Virginia and I don’t need to have a fire down there. I have the heater and electric lights which are working well. ๐Ÿ—ป Tomorrow I morning I could break camp early, take US 219 to Thomas WV and camp there through Sunday. I would stop at Mount Davis tomorrow and then hike Hoyes Crest on Thursday or Friday and the opposite day do a day trip and hike at Dolly Sods and maybe Cannan Valley Refuge. Come back on Sunday, overnight at County Bridge Campground outside of Troy Penna.

The alternative which is probably more sensible is to tomorrow drive down to the Southern portion of the Allegheny National Forest. โ›บ There is this big open campsite outside of Marietta on Loleta Grade that is remote yet has an open canopy for solar and looking at the stars โœจ. Good wood supply and I could drive over to the Buzzard Swamp one day. I’d have to get ice and more milk and cheese tomorrow in Warren then maybe take US 62 south. Maybe visit the Tionesta Vista and Nebraska Bridge which is probably not underwater right now. Sunday visit the Elk Center in Benzette and drive the Elk Route along the very scenic West Branch of the Susquehanna River and drive up to Hyner View. Overnight at County Bridge, get home on Columbus Day. That would be a lot less miles and much quieter option but it means no West Virginia until November 2020 or later.

I think I’ll choose the later but I’ll sure be disappointed ๐Ÿ˜ฅ about not making it to West Virginia. But the leaves by Sunday might be much better in Elk County and they’re really cool ๐Ÿ˜Ž to watch graze. I ‘ll see come the morning. The Elk Drive is a lot of fun and maybe quite beautiful but the rest of the week is kind of bland compared to the alternative.

In four weeks on November 5 the sun will be setting at 5:05 pm (Standard Time),๐ŸŒ„ which is one hour, 40 minutes and 42 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had rain showers, partly sunny and temperatures between 48 and 31 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 52 and 34 degrees. The record high of 75 degrees was set back in 1994.

Looking ahead, Election Day 2019 ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ is in 4 weeks, 7:15 AM Sunrise โŒ›๏ธ is in 9 weeks, Christmas Eve ๐ŸŽ… is in 11 weeks, New Years Eve ๐ŸŽ† is in 12 weeks, Coldest Week of the Year ๐ŸŒฌ is in 14 weeks and Martin Luther King Day ๐Ÿ–ค is in 15 weeks.

I set my alarm for 6:30 am well before dawn here so I can take down camp and move onto whatever the next step is. โฐ

Duck Pond from the Dam

September 30, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Where did September go? Winters coming. But first autumn. Two weeks to Columbus Day ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ. Partly cloudy and 47 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… Calm wind.

I had a nice breakfast of eggs this morning,ย so hopefully I’ll have lots of energy to make it through today. โ˜• I set my alarm early so I would be up in plenty of time to drop off my truck and be in early to prepare for the Monday meeting.โฐ Hopefully this week will go smoothly, and vacation will happen on Saturday morning bright and early. Rainy though by mid-week but maybe the rain will get out of the system by next week.๐ŸŒง

Big Red has been dropped off at the shop and he’s being looked at. ๐Ÿš˜ Hopefully today or tomorrow it will be fixed and I’ll be good for vacation. ๐Ÿ”ง New mechanic but the online reviews were good and the receptionist was friendly. Maybe not the tobacco smoke, WGNA country music playing ๐ŸŽถ with a burn barrel ๐Ÿ”ฅ out back but I don’t live in the country anymore. ๐Ÿฎ I do miss having my cars repaired at Lou’s in Greenville, but he must be a million years old now. Great guy though. But certainly driving through Pennsylvania, Maryland, and West Virginia I’ll have plenty of time to see the country in coming week.

I’ll probably buy food for vacation ๐Ÿฒ on Wednesday so I can test out the truck and have more time to figure out what I forgot before I leave. I want to leave by dawn on Saturday. Should be a nice trip down there. Friday I will also go to the laundromat and get some books to read at the library. I also want to buy two additional SD cards ๐ŸŽด so I have plenty of recording capacity for my dash cam to make scenic videos.

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 67 degrees at 3pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 29th. Maximum dew point of 47 at 6pm. Light and variable wind becoming south around 6 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 66 degrees. The record high of 88 was set in 1905.

The sun will set at 6:39 pm with dusk around 7:07 pm, which is one minute and 46 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for rain showers ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 66 degrees. The dew point will be 47 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 11 hours and 48 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of showers, mainly between midnight and 2am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 55 degrees at 6am. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 8th. Maximum dew point of 52 at 5am. South wind 6 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2018, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 52 degrees. The record low of 28 occurred back in 1993.

A picture perfect weekend to start out my vacation on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, sunny, with a high near 59. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 62. Maximum dew point of 45 at 5pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 64 degrees. Temperatures are dropping rapidly now that we are into October.

I plan to get a really early start on Saturday and probably get scrapple in Pennsylvania just to try it out. ๐Ÿฝ Then visit a few state parks on the northern tier before overnighting near Towanda. I’ll probably take Interstate 88 down to Pennsylvania, even though I hate driving it as I want as much time as possible to visit state parks in Pennsylvania on Saturday.

The latest forecast for Thomas WV is talking about more rain โ˜” for Monday and Tuesday but that could change again. I’m going to bring my tent, tarps and heater in case it’s really cold and wet. โ›บ I don’t mind a few quiet days but I hope at least the balance of week is sunny. Cloudy days as was common during my vacation in 2017 and 2018 are kind of depressing. โ˜ Sometimes though if you get the exposure right cloudy days can be excellent for fall foliage pictures. Might also be a good day for some camp cooking and baking, now that my camp stove is working really well.

I am glad that this week is a pay week, ๐Ÿค‘ because between the car insurance, the repair bill for my truck, rent, and certain expenses related to vacation, there is a lot of money going out and not a lot coming in. My day-to-day fund balance as of the weekend is the lowest it’s been in recent years, although I do keep a bit more in their in years past as a cushion. That said, based on the fact that it’s another month before my credit card bill is due, I think things will balance out, especially as expenses except for heat decline in the winter months.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Columbus Day ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 6:15 pm with dusk at 6:43 pm. On that day in 2018, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 59 and 40 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 61 degrees. We hit a record high of 81 back in 1920.

 Scenic Otter Creek Road

September 26, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Next Thursday is Last Dusk After 7 PM ๐ŸŒ†. Mostly cloudy and 57 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a south breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 51 degrees. BJ Thomas’ Raindrops Keeps Falling on My Head is playing on the radio. ๐Ÿ“ป I brought my rain coat, but think that I might need it later. ๐Ÿ’ฆ Ironically, downstate is going to beautiful today while the Adirondacks will get soaked.

A week from now I’ll be almost ready for my West Virginia trip. โฐ I want to leave before dawn on that Saturday morning so it’s early enough that I can get breakfast ๐Ÿณ in Pennsylvania and have the morning to explore the Northern Tier of Pennsylvania. The second day I’ll drive up Hyner View before driving down to West Virginia via US 220 and Interstate 99. I also have most of the rest of the week planned out. โ›บ A

Today will have a chance of showers before 2pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm between 2pm and 5pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5pm. Mostly cloudy โ˜, with a high of 71 degrees at 12pm. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 20th. Maximum dew point of 60 at 2pm. South wind 7 to 9 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was sticky. The high last year was 80 degrees. The record high of 90 was set in 2017.

The sun will set at 6:46 pm with dusk around 7:14 pm, which is one minute and 46 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 65 degrees. The dew point will be 57 degrees. There will be a west breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 11 hours and 59 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 51 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 47 degrees at 6am. Typical for tonight. West wind 3 to 7 mph. In 2018, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 50 degrees. The record low of 24 occurred back in 1947.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 81. South wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. Maximum dew point of 64 at 7pm. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 70. Maximum dew point of 58 at 6am. Typical average high for the weekend is 67 degrees.

Tonight I’m heading to the Guilderland library to do some Pine Bush research ๐ŸŒฒso John Wolcott will have to take a rain check โ˜‘. I emailed him about maybe Friday or Saturday. I’d probably do a hike out only part of the day Saturday to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center ๐Ÿธ.

As previously noted, next Thursday is Last Dusk After 7 PM ๐ŸŒ† when the sun will be setting at 6:34 pm with dusk at 7:02 pm. On that day in 2018, we had partly sunny skies, patches of fog and temperatures between 65 and 50 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 65 degrees. We hit a record high of 83 back in 1967.

Watching Fog Burn Off

February 20, 2019 Morning

Good morning! What day is it? Hump Day, of course. Three weeks to 7 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ†. Mostly cloudy and 15 degrees in Delmar. โ˜ Calm wind. There are 4.5 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ Things will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 6 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

This morning when I walked down to Stewart’s to buy milk, โ˜•the air had a tinge of manure ๐Ÿฎ and wood smoke on it,๐Ÿ”ฅduring this most cloudy of mornings prior to the snow and ice coming down later. โ˜ I don’t really live in the country any more but on the outskirts of the suburbs as they start to peter out to the countryside.

After getting milk and having a breakfast of frozen fruit๐Ÿ›๐Ÿ’๐ŸŒ and cereal I walked down to the express bus. ๐ŸšŒย I actually didn’t end up needing the milk today, but maybe tomorrow. Bus was running a little late, which was fine, it showed up but then we hit more traffic heading into the plaza. I don’t care that much about it, I’m not driving.

Today will have a chance of snow, mainly after 3pm. Cloudy ๐ŸŒจ, with a high of 28 degrees at 1pm. Eight degrees below normal. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 8 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than one inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny in the morning, which became partly cloudy by afternoon. The high last year was 63 degrees. The record high of 66 was set in 1930. 11.2 inches of snow fell back in 1977.โ„

I’ll take 63 degrees for sure any day now. We are due for a spring thaw anytime๐ŸŒฑ now, maybe a bit later this week although I doubt we will see the sixties anytime soon. But one can hope and maybe God will listen. Trump doesn’t believe in global warming after all.ย But winters aren’t nearly as cold as once where.

Looking forward to the Pine Bush dinner tonight,๐Ÿ it should be really good with the lasagna and Ward Stone speaking. ๐ŸŽค He’s getting up there in the years, so who knows how many opportunities there will be able to hear him in the coming years. He’s an authority on many things, especially things that the state government finds particularly unpleasant like the Coeymans Blue Circle Plant, that was poisoning everything nearby with mercury, at least until they “fixed” the plant with a big upgrade.๐Ÿญ Blue Circle Cement, later known as LaFarge, was built because Governor Thomas Dewey gave them a big tax break to build the non-union plant, to break the cement strike in New York. But we don’t talk about the history anymore.

But actually, Ward Stone is coming to talk about another state proposal, re-powering the old ANSWERS incinerator to work as a micro-grid power plant,ย that will burn natural gas for generations to come, as the climate warms,ย ย ๐ŸŒย to heat and cool the Empire Plaza and other state office buildings, and also generate electricity for the buildings, as an alternative to grid power — and act as a “jump start pack” for the electric grid, which may become more unstableย ๐Ÿ”Œย both when the climate becomes more unstable and more renewables are put on it.

Times change, and sometimes opportunities that once existed suddenly. So definitely come to the Pine Bush dinner, before it’s late.ย ๐Ÿฝ ย 6 PM tonight is the dinner, 7 PM is the free lecture. I think the dinner costs like $12 but I usually end up throwing in $15 or $20 for it.ย  Should be a great evening.

The sun will set at 5:34 pm with dusk around 6:02 pm, which is one minute and 16 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for snow showers ๐ŸŒจ and temperatures around 27 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 10 hours and 50 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 46 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be periods of snow and sleet before 11pm, then periods of sleet between 11pm and midnight, then periods of freezing rain after midnight. ๐ŸŒง Low of 26 degrees at 6pm. Sounds like it could be pretty icy later. Well the bus will get me home from the Pine Bush dinner so I’m not that worried about it. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 16th. South wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than one inch possible. In 2018, we had mostly clear in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 40 degrees. The record low of -10 occurred back in 2015.

Tomorrow will have a chance of rain and sleet before 7am, then a chance of rain between 7am and 10am. Partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 47 degrees at 2pm. 11 degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical day around March 22nd. Breezy, with a south wind 6 to 11 mph becoming west 17 to 22 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 34 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Little or no sleet accumulation expected. Not sure if tomorrow I’ll be walking down to the Park and Ride. A year ago, we had mostly sunny in the morning, which became partly cloudy by afternoon. The high last year was 73 degrees. The record high of 73 was set in 2018. 11.0 inches of snow fell back in 1929.โ„

Last night’s commute wasn’t too bad.ย ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿš—๐Ÿš—๐Ÿšƒ๐ŸšŒ๐Ÿš๐Ÿš’๐Ÿšš๐Ÿš›ย Traffic actually was pretty light due to the holiday weekend.ย I thought about cooking up some pasta for dinner, but decided on fish sticks and broccoli, as I wanted something different, as tonight is the Save the Pine Bush Dinner.ย ๐ŸŸย Laid back for a while, ate dinner, then hopped on the exercise bike.ย Really wasn’t that hungry,

Then I thought about going down to the library but decided that it would be a would be nice to go for a walk in the evening around 8 pm. ๐ŸšถIn the meantime I decided to ride the exercise bike for an hour while listening to Fresh Air podcast with Andrew McCabe formerly of the FBI and then a video about about Core Memory. ๐ŸŽงย I heard it first on the radio starting, but put on the podcast, so I could listen over my bluetooth headphones while on the bike. I’ll have to ask my neighbor if he can hear the rumble of the bike the next time I see him, but I try not to ride the bike much after 8:30 most nights.

Around 8:30 I went for my evening walk under the beautiful snow moon. ๐ŸŒ• No problem walking in the darkness, plenty of light and the sidewalks were free of ice and snow for the most part. Pretty night but fairly cold but at least the wind had died down. ๐Ÿƒย It was cold, but not that cold.ย That said, I’m certainly looking forward to nicer weather, sitting out back with a cold glass of orange juiceย ๐ŸŠ or maybe ice water with a drop of lemon juice in it.๐Ÿ‹

Came home and laid in bed watching a few YouTube videos๐ŸŽฅ I had previously downloaded, one about thermal storage of heat, ๐Ÿ”ฅย one about stocking rate of cattle on ranches, ๐Ÿฎand one about off grid living. Then I took my contacts out and retired for the night. ๐Ÿ‘I do like how the lights automatically remind me when it’s time for bed, automatically dimming at 10:10 pm๐Ÿ˜ด.ย It really helps when you get to bed at a proper hour for boosting your sleep.ย I always try to bed down by the time the lights start dimming at 10:10 pm. It really is a good reminder.

I am definitely looking forward to those longer nights in a month with dusk not being until after 7:30 pm๐Ÿ•— and hopefully for some warmer nights when I can sit out back, looking up at the stars. โœจย Usually I work on a blog post out back in the warmer weather, although now that I’ve built a system for downloading videos, I might actually watch one of the videos from the channels I’ve downloaded. Honestly, I’m not a big fan of staring at a screen, but I listen to them, and are learning a lot about many different topics, expanding my knowledge and hopefully my future.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. ๐Ÿ˜• Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 41. Sunday, rain likely before 1pm, then showers likely, mainly after 4pm. Cloudy, with a high near 48. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Typical average high for the weekend is 37 degrees.

NOAA seems to think this weekend will be quite sunny, at least for the Save the Pine Bush hike.ย I am not sure I totally agree, but it will be mild for the ski trip. ๐ŸŽฟI know Sunday still looks to be quite wet, which looks like it will melt the snow, hopefully melting it away the rain and not turning to ice. I am a bit worried about ice again, so if your joining us, bring your microspikes. Skis might not work well.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until 7 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ† with dusk at 7:27 pm (Daylight Savings Time). On that day in 2018, we had snow and temperatures between 34 and 30 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 43 degrees. We hit a record high of 70 back in 2012.

In four weeks on March 20 the sun will be setting at 7:07 pm (Daylight Savings Time),๐ŸŒ„ which is one hour, 33 minutes and 49 seconds later then today. In 2018 on that day, we had cold, partly sunny and temperatures between 37 and 15 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 46 and 27 degrees. The record high of 78 degrees was set back in 2012.

Looking ahead, 7 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ† is in 3 weeks, May ๐Ÿ•Š is in 10 weeks, 8:30 PM Sunset ๏ธโ›ฑ๏ธ is in 15 weeks and Inauguration Day 2021 ๐Ÿ‘ด๐Ÿป is in 23 months.
