๐Ÿ”ฅ๐ŸŒฒ Off-Grid Living ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿค

I am seriously thinking about building an off-grid house. I have a first draft. I need to learn CAD! I have a road map towards buying land and building. I concede might have to live with long commute and give up traveling and camping. I need to be strong.

Why off grid? Well, I’m not into contemporary society. I want to own land, but not be called a landowner, and a cabin, not hooked to electrical grid, farm, raise pigs for food and burn my own trash. I’m saving for a better tomorrow, hoping to make the leap to another freer state. Having acreage is important. Cornfields aren’t bad neighbors. Maybe though my vision has grown smaller and more local. More on off-grid living.

I am 16 years into my career and have made some significant progress in my life. I love my job. But I do wonder on all the things I’m missing out but saving sure makes me high. Maybe it will be different when I own my own land — the end of goal of all this saving.

2020 into 2021 during the pandemic was a year of remote work. It was a struggle not having internet at home, worked a lot out of my truck. But I worked remotely from Horseshoe Lake which was super cool.

Generally I like the idea of owning land in a red state, particularly Idaho, Iowa, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Wisconsin — and Midwest more generally. But I may settle for New York – it’s all about the f-ing money!

I often think politics is for losers. I’m into the politics of statistical analysis and reading history books.

I believe strongly in the first amendment, second amendment, oppose gun restrictions and I support de-funding the police in favor of lower-cost technology and civilian employees. Maybe use red flag laws for voting to stop dangerous voters? And the media should stop promoting mass-shootings, even if it’s super profitable for all involved. They should tax the media when it promotes violence. I think some people are much too paranoid in politics. How elections are rigged under law to benefit incumbents. But vote, it’s the best option and inexpensive.

Yeah for the third parties! I voted for Larry Sharpe for Governor and Jo Jergenson for President but my views are complicated and often vote for Democrats, after voting Jill Stein Green Party in 2016.

Generally, I think Biden has been a good change over DJT and glad the Trump era is over and are glad prosecutors and grand jurors are holding him responsible by indicting him for many serious felonies. I don’t think Trump can win in 2024, as nothing has changed politically from 2020.

I think rural people should be left alone and not worship government workers or have parades for them. I am no fan of Donald Trump, his speeches are bad, I don’t like Trump’s embrace of radical environmentalists, but do admire the homemade roadside monuments to DJT.

I don’t toke. But whatever. There are too many transit authorities.

๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒณThe Earth ๐ŸŒŽ ๐Ÿธ

Why I oppose wilderness areas and parks. It’s trendy to be green these days, but is eco-marketing good for the planet? I visited the Mount Storm Coal Plant and Corridor H.

I worry about a lot about overly-aggressive Climate Change Action, and Undermining Environment Laws for Climate Action. I think we should all admit we are Addicted to Fossil Fuels. These days, urban recycling has become a joke, when it’s still an option at all. It’s better to just buy less shit and avoid the alure of Costcos. I really don’t like how aging radicals have become industrial solar salespeople.

Big bucks are coming to state-designated disadvantaged communities under the CLCP. Which counties and political districts are in line for the the most pork? Interactive map.

I’m a big of farmers who are essentially Living Off the Earth and think Rednecks are Noble Savages. Dairy Farming are key to our rural landscape. I’d trust a farmer or a hunter in a pile of guts he’s butchered over any ivory-tower scientist.

๐Ÿ’ณ ๐Ÿ’ธSaving Money ๐Ÿ’ฐ ๐Ÿ’ท

I am not a fan of ESG Investing as it’s not well diversified. I prefer index-funds and other tax-advantaged ways of saving. Why I am concerned about saving enough for retirement, even though I’m in my late 30s. We as a nation should save more, consume less. I like the idea of carbon tax to replace capital gains taxes to discourage consumption.

๐Ÿฅฆ ๐ŸŽMission Fifty & Being Healthier ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿง

I am now officially in my 40s! I am building to a better life in my 50s, which means getting up early, walking a lot, saying no to cake and yes to more fruit. In many ways, the forties are an awesome time to be alive.

And eating healthy for less without losing sleep over arsenic. And I don’t think we should subsidize unhealthy habits. How I got started in eating healther. Meals are too focused on meat and carbs due to how we describe them, maybe I eat too many bananas in the office, what to eat while camping, worry more about salt then GMOs, eat more beans. Do spend extra for farmers market peaches, especially doughnut peaches and plums. Consider ethnic supermarkets. Thinking about how to make a healthier macaroni and cheese, spinach-mackeral-pasta salad, quick-cook biscuits and whole-wheat bread. That said, too many recipes are junk food crap. Okay in moderation is not okay. The fact that I’m thinner is not a sign I’m dying.

A few years back I decided to explore my mental illness with therapy, thinking about why I have so much anxiety and how many of my values are rational or just thinking too much rednecks’ burn barrels and how much of a throwaway society we live in. Do I want to change?

I’ve learned to care less about the world, and focus more on myself. Maybe I am happier as I am now, saving and investing a lot towards owning my own land, where I don’t have to deal with all the bullshit of modern life.

Percent Of Population That Are Non-Citizens

Currently the American Community Survey put out by the US Census Bureau estimates the number of citizens and non-citizens in each blockgroup (a group of similar demographic blocks). This map shows citizenship rates for New York State, from the 2016 ACS 5-year Averages for each Census Tract in New York State.

These estimates are used for many purposes, the most notable is for compliance with the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which requires no dilution of voting power of Citizen Voting Age Participants based on race. The Decennial Census, a full population count has not asked about Citizenship since 1950, preferring to focus on core questions to keep the form as short and easy to fill out as possible. Instead, for VRA purposes, American Community Survey estimates is used to calculating the number of citizens in each political district.

The Trump administration, in an effort to get a supposedly more accurate count of citizens and non-citizens, down to the block level, is adding the question back to the 2020 Decennial Census. Some people, worry that fewer people will fill out a longer census form or that the citizenship questions will lead minorities to not-fill out the forum. Others argue that statistically it is more accurate to estimate a large population, then it is to do a total count -- as estimates can make up for non-participation of certain groups of the population.

Proposed County Legislative Districts (12/9) – 2019 County Coroner Race VAP-PW Interpolated

A few weeks back, the Albany County Redistricting Commission submitted another plan after many city legislators and advocates for the minority community had concerns with the proposed plan — and the legislature voted it down. While most of changes didn’t drastically effect the Democratic Performance of the districts, I hadn’t run this data based on a like-year turnout model, which would be the 2019 elections.

The only competitive, county-wide two-way race that year was the County Coroner’s race, which actually is likely a good race to use as a model as most voters don’t have much of an opinion on the County Coroner besides their partisan leanings. To calculate these numbers, I took the 2019 Election District results using old 2019 EDs Shapefile that I had previously saved, then used population-weighted interpolation using the Voter Age Population (VAP) and created block level estimates. This is sometimes called the ESRI-method of interpolation, it is widely used for redistricting analysis. The block level estimate were joined against the block list provided by Albany County Redistricting Commission.

Andy Arthur, 12/26/22. Estimates created in R using block-level voting-age population interpolation (ERSI method) of 2019 Election Results/Districts.

Basically all of the proposed Colonie LDs, 19 through 28 are competitive but lean Democratic, except for LD 27 which is solidly Republican. A popular Republican incumbent or well-known personality could win those districts or at least make for a tight race in 2023, especially in the current political climate. But Albany County remains quite blue, even if Colonie has a GOP supervisor currently.

One thing of note is the Coeymans district, Legislative District 37 remains largely the same as was from the most of the 2010s. It will be a swing-district, based on the likely turn-out in 2019. It leans Republican in the Presidential and Gubernatoral Elections, and by enrollment, but a lot of independent voters who show up on off-years are Democratic leaning.

The Southern Hilltowns Legislative District 39 (Westerlo-Rensselearville-part of Berne) is nominally a Republican district, but Christopher H. Smith (D) holds it. He is a military-veteran and owns a popular restaurant, but he could certainly loose re-election, depending on who shows up and the climate in 2023. Things are more Republican leaning then four years ago.

Maps Comparing 2017 and 2023 Albany County Election Districts and a Crosswalk Table Showing the Proposition of Voting Age Population in New and Old EDs

February 14, 2023 Evening

Good evening! Happy Valentines Day Eve. February is halfway done and tomorrow is going to be warm enough to open up the windows and let some fresh air in. That makes me happy.

Mostly clear and 43 degrees for the evening walk ๐Ÿšถ here in Delmar. ๐ŸŒƒ Calm wind. With those clear skies cooling off quickly. But it will rebound quickly tomorrow as we have our first real spring thaw.

I was pleasantly surprised that I got released at 5 o’clock on this Valentines Day โ™ฅ and was able to take the express bus ๐Ÿš home. It’s nice having that option on a session day though who knows how long it will last as there isn’t a lot of riders right now heading out to Slingerlands or Voorheesville at least not on 5 pm bus which is less popular than the earlier express bus. The thing is that some of the former riders retired and more people nowadays are able to do hybrid or work from home ๐Ÿก. Our department wants that option but the people up top say no. Getting hard though to be competitive without that option.

It was annoying this morning that the ramp to 787 was closed again. ๐Ÿšง I wish they could wait until the off hours or at least until the end of rush hour. I don’t understand their decision making process on that. To boot the express bus ๐Ÿš was 20 minutes late due to the driver making a wrong term. I ended up walking ๐Ÿšถ most of the way to the Park and Ride as I wanted to get more steps in and it was a very pleasant morning.

Tonight will have increasing clouds โ˜, with a low of 31 degrees at 1am. 13 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 30th. Light and variable wind becoming south 5 to 10 mph after midnight. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became light snow by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 17 degrees. The record low of -22 occurred back in 1943.

Got paid today ๐Ÿ’ต and it looks like my bills aren’t as bad as I thought they would be. I might actually have a bit extra, I might start adding more to the savings account, the first time I’ve saved money in a year but interest rates are going up and I’m concerned more about mid range expenses.

Tonight will have a Waining Crescent ๐ŸŒ˜ Moon with 33% illuminated. The Worm ๐Ÿ› Moon is on Thursday, March 2. The darkest hour is at 12:11 am, followed by dawn at 6:26 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:55 am in the east-southeast (107ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 2 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 21 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 7:35 am with sun in the east-southeast (114ยฐ). Tonight will have 13 hours and 23 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 40 seconds over last night.

Been really digging into the ins and outs of machine learning. ๐Ÿค– Lately I’ve been about better ways to target ๐ŸŽฏ and estimate voting patterns using election results and the enrollment rolls. It would be interesting if you could target based on actual past results and demographics. I have used imputation in the past for making maps and are considering other ways I could use machine learning to better understand data. Decision trees ๐ŸŽ„ and random forests are particularly interesting methods.

Tomorrow will be cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing ๐ŸŒƒ, with a high of 58 degrees at 3pm. 22 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 12th. Breezy, with a south wind 13 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 34 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 23 degrees. The record high of 55 was set in 2006. 9.0 inches of snow fell back in 1894.โ„

I think tomorrow will be a good day to have the windows open ๐Ÿ”ณ and let all that fresh air in. ๐Ÿƒ While I’ll probably only open windows without storm windows it should be nice to enjoy the fresh air.

In four weeks on March 14 the sun will be setting in the west (268ยฐ) at 7:01 pm (Daylight Savings Time),๐ŸŒ„ which is one hour, 34 minutes and 36 seconds later then tonight. In 2021 on that day, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 41 and 19 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 44 and 25 degrees. The record high of 75 degrees was set back in 1946.

Looking ahead, Average High is 40 โ˜€๏ธ is Next Tuesday, First Day of Spring ๐Ÿ’ฎ is in 5 weeks, Average High is 50 ๐ŸŒธ is in 6 weeks, Mothers Day ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€ is in 3 months, Primary Day ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ is in 18 weeks, Independence Day ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ is in 20 weeks, World Population Day ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ง is in 21 weeks, National Nude Day ๐Ÿ‘ฑ is in 5 months, August ๐ŸŒป is in 24 weeks, Halloween ๐ŸŽƒ is in 37 weeks, Average High is 50 ๐Ÿ‚ is in 9 months, Election Day ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ is in 9 months, Repeal of Prohibition Day ๐Ÿบ is in 42 weeks and Boxing Day ๐ŸฅŠ is in 45 weeks.

Starting Up the Spruceton Trail

Congress Tries Again To Extend Deadlines For Late Census Results

Congress Tries Again To Extend Deadlines For Late Census Results

A bipartisan group of lawmakers is renewing a push that failed during the previous administration to extend the deadlines for reporting 2020 census results after the pandemic and Trump officials' interference disrupted the count.

If passed, two bills introduced Tuesday could help shield the U.S. Census Bureau from any questions about the legality of numbers and other data it is set to release months after current federal law says they are due.

The bureau has flagged since last April that it needs more time to ensure the accuracy of new census data. The agency is now close to four months late in delivering the state population counts used to reallocate each state's share of votes in the House of Representatives and the Electoral College. That delay also forced the bureau to postpone putting out the data needed to redraw voting districts. That information was due to the states by the end of March.

Both the Senate bill introduced by Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, and Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska — and its House counterpart introduced by Democrats led by Rep. Carolyn Maloney of New York, plus Republican Rep. Don Young of Alaska — would push back the deadline for congressional apportionment counts from Dec. 31, 2020, to "not later than" May 1, which in effect means they have to be in by April 30, according to Schatz's communications director, Mike Inacay. Redistricting data would be due by Sept. 30.

That's kind of a bummer, as I want to use that data to make maps and look at population and race trends across Capital District.
