Georgia Creek Crossing

Getting across the Georgia Creek on the Cotter Brook Trail is a risky venture, as the old snowmobile trail bridge is long abandoned, most of the planks gone, the telephone poles collapsing into the water. As I didn't want to get soaked, I didn't cross here.

Summit

The skies were fairly gray, but except for a few spots, most of snow is now gone from Bennett Hill.

Frozen Switzkill

While the snow and ice is long gone in the city, in the bitter coldness of the hilltowns this weekend not only could you find frozen creeks, many of the lakes where frozen over including Tompkins Lake. I didn't spend much time walking the Switzkill as there was a hunter up in a tree stand and I didn't want to bother them and it was bitterly cold and had more back roads to explore in my property search.

Happy Snowman Day β˜ƒ

At least that’s what the internet tells me to be the case. And unlike me, the internet doesn’t just make up shit.

Good morning! Happy Snowman β˜ƒ Day. 15 degrees and partly cloudy this morning as I await the dawn 6:50 πŸŒ… and head out for a morning bike ride. Roughly three inches of snow on the ground β˜ƒ, which could probably be turned into a snowman that will last until Monday at 2 pm, the next time it’s likely to be above freezing again.

Last night I was bed πŸ› by 7 pm and asleep shortly thereafter as with the nights so cold and dark I can’t imagine staying up much later. I mean I probably should have gone for an evening walk 🚢 but I was tired. Cooked up some of mom’s lasagna with Butternut squash and the last of the frozen peas and corn I had. Salmon and broccoli πŸ₯¦ 🐟 for dinner tonight.

Pancakes πŸ₯ž this morning with the remaining fresh blueberries 🫐 and mango that I had. Getting low on fresh fruit but with the snow coming tomorrow I’ll probably wait until Saturday morning to shop. πŸ›’ Even the veggies are almost out but I have several cans πŸ₯« of low sodium vegetables I got for camping that I can crack open. I’ll stock up on several large bags when I go Wally World. Bulk frozen vegetables is something I really like. Plus no cans to wash and recycle β™». The plastic makes a good fire πŸ”₯ starter, lol. πŸ˜‚

For our snowman β˜ƒ day, slight chance of snow showers after 3pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 29. πŸŒ₯ South wind 7 to 10 mph. 3 degrees below the normal high of 33, closer to the typical normal before the climate warmed in Albany. Chance of precipitation is 20%. Kind of a cool day ahead but it is mid January.

I started my morning bike ride 🚲 out to Meads Lane but my face πŸ˜” and hands πŸ‘ were really cold, ❄ so I decided after about 4 miles of riding to head back home, have a warm shower 🚿 and then take the earlier express bus 🚍 in an walk in the Concourse where it will be warm. I prefer the calorie burn of riding but lately I’ve been riding back along Cherry Avenue at 7:30 am and it’s really congested. 🚢 I guess I could have done a walk in Delmar instead this morning but the Concourse will be warm.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:06 pm with sun having an altitude of 26.8° from the due south horizon (-44.1° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 11.9 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour πŸ… starts at 4:07 pm with the sun in the southwest (235°). πŸ“Έ The sunset is in the west-southwest (242°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:50 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 17 seconds with dusk around 5:21 pm, which is one minute and 12 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous πŸŒ” Moon in the south-southeast (150°) at an altitude of 59° from the horizon, 231,005 miles away. πŸš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:56 pm. At sunset, look for skies and temperatures around degrees. There will be a calm wind. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 34 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 49 seconds over today.

The shuttle bus to the suburban office 🏒 works well with the 519 schedule though I admit the evening transfer is very tight and there will be times I inevitably will miss the express at the bus turn around but if I hurry to the Capitol I can likely catch it there or the 18 home. Worse comes to worse, I catch the later 18 home and just walk laps in the Plaza. πŸ‘£ I’m getting used to the change, though I miss the heart pumping πŸ’“ of climbing all those stairs. When the weather gets nicer out, I’ll be riding to work, that is once the bike path is free of snow 🚲 and can visit the Corning Preserve at lunch time or explore the bike trail, especially the nicer section near Menands. 🏞 Might be nice to sit down by the river and eat lunch and ride. It’s a big change to working out in the suburbs, but it really isn’t that bad but I do miss the sweeping views from the old downtown office, and just the experience, but I’m young and can adapt.

This evening will have a slight chance of snow showers before 8pm. 🌨 Mostly cloudy, with a low around 18. Two degrees above normal. South wind around 6 mph becoming light and variable after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

I have been trying to dial back the calories and big meals this week, 🀰 as I haven’t been riding into work with the weather, and don’t have the stairs to climb in the suburban office building. There are some halls to make laps, but nothing like being connected with Capitol Complex and Concourse. It’s just been cold and icy, and it’s hard to get in as many steps as I would like to do each day. πŸ‘£ Plus I’ve been having a lot of carbs lately with all the bread I’ve been baking 🍞. Of course now the challenge is with the pantry getting low, but as noting before, if I dip into the canned vegetable reserve I have I should be able to make it to Saturday.

Then when we finally reach Friday, ☺ we will have snow 🌨️ mainly between 8am and 5pm. Cloudy and cool, with a high near 26, which is six degrees below normal. North wind 6 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible. Then really cold for the weekend. Saturday will be cloudy, with a high near 18. Northwest wind 14 to 18 mph. That just sounds cold, even without considering the windchill. Then Sunday it will be sunny, with a high near 23. 😎 Still cold. But then again, the high temperature for this week of the year is typically around 32 degrees, which used to be only 30 before the planet warmed. Probably staying home, except for maybe going out to shop and if we do the filming of the Rezin documentary, I’ll probably head out.

Looking ahead, next Thursday is 5 PM Sunset πŸŒ‡ with dusk at 5:29 pm. On that day in 2023, we had snow, mostly cloudy and temperatures between 36 and 28 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 32 degrees. We hit a record high of 61 back in 1938.

Mountain and a Farm

Waiting on the sun to ride after yesterday’s snow πŸŒ… 🚲

Figured if it’s a dress-up day for work, I won’t be able to ride to work or want to take the stairs up to my office. So it best to get out riding early. It looks like the main roads will just be wet, not super icy though I might run into some snow on side-streets, like Meads Road and Orchard Street. I don’t expect it will be that bad of a ride this morning, and it’s not super cold. But first the sun needs to rise a bit more. I have lights on my bike but I don’t want to ride in the pitch black, especially past the street lights on NY 32 and Meads Road.

Good morning! Happy Monday on this Bubble Bath Day. πŸ›€ Back to work today, no time for bubble baths. 🧼Partly cloudy and 23 degrees in Delmar. β›… There is a northwest breeze at 14 mph. πŸƒ. The current wind chill is 11. There are 7 inches of snow on the ground. β˜ƒ ️Things will start to thaw out at around 10 am. 🌑️ Probably want a bubble bath by the time I get home from the ride this morning. And more oil on the bike chain.

This morning I made cornmeal paddies with an egg, milk, red onions, garlic, spinach, red pepper and salt. πŸ” I think with the garlic, salt and red pepper I might next time dial back it back a bit, as they were a bit more punchy then I’d like in the morning, but they were good. The spinach helped boost the fiber content plus topping them with greek yogurt and the egg in them really boost the protein content. I was pretty happy with how they came out, and will make them again though I still think I’d want to tone them back a bit. Just too spicy for morning food. Is corn as healthy as oats or whole-wheat? Probably not, but it has the different sweeter and oiler taste. Don’t need to add any oil to the paddies for sure, and they were good.

Today will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 37 degrees at 1pm. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 18th. Northwest wind 7 to 14 mph. Between the warm weather, breeze and sun I don’t expect the snow to stick around. But we can really stick a fork in it come Wednesday with the rain expected. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 35 degrees. The record high of 60 was set in 2008. 8.3 inches of snow fell back in 1923.❄

Yesterday, I decided to make up some chicken soup 🍲 for dinner, which was followed by pea soup and a small bowl of cornmeal porridge. Interested in finding new ways to use cornmeal. 🍊 Shredded a full orange in the food processor, to get all the flavor, taste and fiber of both the inside and outside of an orange. 🍞 Didn’t make up any bread last night, I was kind of tired, but I probably will tonight when I get home.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:02 pm with sun having an altitude of 25.1Β° from the due south horizon (-45.7Β° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12.8 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour πŸ… starts at 3:54 pm with the sun in the southwest (232Β°). πŸ“Έ The sunset is in the west-southwest (240Β°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:39 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 21 seconds with dusk around 5:10 pm, which is one minute and 2 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:46 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies πŸŒƒ and temperatures around 34 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 7 mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 18 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 14 seconds over today.

I’ll be the first to admit yesterday wasn’t the most productive day ever. πŸ›Œ Just a lot of reading, and watching Youtube and Udemy videos to learn more about machine learning and other topics. I probably should have gone out for a walk yesterday, 🚢 but it was cold out 🧟 and I wasn’t super interested in heading out. I kind of want to just get through winter at this point.

Tonight will be partly cloudy πŸ™, with a low of 22 degrees at 6am. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 1st. Light and variable wind. Should be a nice night for the evening. In 2023, we had clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 18 degrees. The record low of -20 occurred back in 1968.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. πŸ˜• Saturday, rain. High near 45. Breezy. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 32. Breezy. Typical average high for the weekend is 33 degrees. Things could evolve but Saturday isn’t looking great for heading out of town but Sunday into King’s Day might be good. I kind of would like to get at least one night in the woods, preferrably two if I decide to head up to the Adirondacks or Central NY. Rensselearville isn’t so bad for just one night, but it still requires quite a bit of packing.

Next Monday is Martin Luther King Day πŸ–€ when the sun will be setting at 4:48 pm with dusk at 5:17 pm. We are picking up quite a bit of time in the evening now, even if when I move to the Enterprise Drive office in the suburbs, there will be enough light in evening to ride back and catch the express bus home. The question now is just cold and snow. On that day in 2023, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 33 and 19 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 32 degrees. We hit a record high of 65 back in 1995.

Hedge Row

New Scotland Turnpike

By the time I made it home, traffic was largely gone from local roads, which had a couple of inches of snow on them, because the plows couldn't keep up.
