December 24, 2018 Night

Good evening! Light snowand 32 degrees during the great Christmas Eve black out in Delmar. ❄ There is a west-northwest breeze at 10 mph. 🍃. There is a dusting of snow on the ground. β˜ƒ Things will start to thaw out at tomorrow around noontime. 🌡️

As I didn’t want to sit in the darkness inside and because I really didn’t have any dinner when the power went out, 🌌 I sat out back for a while with my camp stove and heater and warmed up some dinner and hot coca.β˜• Not a really cold night but I was getting tired and decided head back in and retire to bed. 💤 Pretty night when the moon came out and it started to snow. I stayed up too late last night and want to get to sleep soon.

I saw the power crew go by and it looks like points north and east of Cherry and Delaware still have power do I expect it to be on before long. But I also expect to be asleep by then.βŒ› I tried to turn off the lights and unplug the strip over my bed so I won’t be awaken when the power returns.

Because it was so dark before the moon came up – close to full moon – I decided to hang Christmas lights on my truck to get into the spirit. 🎄 I’m going to leave them on all night but I expect it’s possible that the low voltage relay will kick in by morning but that’s fine, the starting battery is isolated and even the accessory battery should start charging by morning when the sun gets high enough to push power out to the solar panel.🔌 Might even be enough sun to reset the relay by morning by itself.

Power outage couldn’t have happened at a worse time for me, as I was sorting out electronic components into boxes on my floor, 🔩as they have become rather disorganized and hard to locate things. I’ve been buying these flat clear tackle boxes for that purpose of sorting them out and finally I’m getting around to having one box for LEDs, one for resistors and capacitors, one for microprocessors and other miscellaneous sensors. 📦Well I moved it out of the way with my flash light finishing up what I could. I guess at least I wasn’t cooking.

Tonight will have a slight chance of snow showers before 10pm. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 25 degrees at 6am. Seven degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical night around December 7th. Maximum wind chill around 18 at 6am; Northwest wind 8 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2017, we had cloudy skies, clearing in the early hours of the next day. It got down to 17 degrees. The record low of -22 occurred back in 1969.

Tonight will have a Waning Gibbous Moon 🌖 with 91% illuminated. The moon will set at 9:54 am. The Last Quarter Moon is on Friday night with partly cloudy skies. The Wolf Moon 🌝 is on Sunday, January 20th. The sun will rise at 7:23 am with the first light at 6:51 am, which is 23 seconds later than yesterday. 🌄 Tonight will have 14 hours and 56 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 15 seconds over last night.

Christmas Day will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 34 degrees at 1pm. One degree above normal, which is similiar to a typical day around December 22nd. Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph. Sounds like a really nice day. Maybe I should plan some hiking. A year ago, we had cloudy skies with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 33 degrees. The record high of 66 was set in 1889. 19.2 inches of snow fell back in 2002.❄

If I do go for a hike tomorrow, I am a bit undecided where.🏃 Probably not too far as I want to hook up the under cabinet lighting I got them for Christmas. I should plan a couple hours for that before Christmas dinner at the folks house. I think the next big adventure will be the long weekend for New Years Eve. 🎇

My parents had a nice Christmas Eve party with my niece, and my sister and my inlaw. Lots of good food and hanging around opening gifts. 🎁 It seemed like a lot of fun for all involved. It was nice seeing my parents, I hadn’t seen them since my trip. My niece seemed to like the star I built her. There is a lot I don’t like about Christmas which is why I don’t celebrate it personally but I family occasions are special. And this year thanks to the black out I actually hung up some Christmas lights on my truck. I guess I did string some warm white lights into my apartment that I bought for camping but honestly they’re not really strung for the holiday. If anything, they’re for Quinn the Eskimo.

I’m having some problems with the auto renewal on my phone, 📲 so I may not post any updates until later when I get to my parents house for Christmas dinner. I think the auto renewal is fixed but I won’t know until morning. If not I’ll have to fix it tomorrow, so I won’t have internet until it’s fixed. But then I won’t have to pay for my phone service for another six months. I’m thinking about buying the full year plan and paying the $500 up front but that’s a lot of money to have locked up in a service contract to save $15 total over the six months of service I buy twice a year. ☎ I don’t have internet at home so I’m very dependent on having my phone for connection to the interwebs.

A picture perfect weekend on tap for the final weekend of the year. 😎 Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 40. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 30. Typical average high for the weekend is 32 degrees. Figuring I have New Years Eve off, I’m really thinking about a 3 night camping trip starting right after the Save the Pine Bush hike. Maybe the Adirondacks as I think there will be snow at Charles Baker in Brookfield and I don’t want to go back to Betty Brook in Schoharie in the winter in case there is ice, and because that valley is so deep and dark in the winter.

In four weeks on January 21 the sun will be setting at 4:55 pm,🌄 which is 28 minutes and 5 seconds later then tonight. It will be nice with the later sunsets. In 2018 on that day, we had cloudy skies, snow showers and temperatures between 43 and 29 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 30 and 14 degrees. The record high of 61 degrees was set back in 2006.

Looking ahead, New Years Eve 🎆 is in 1 week, Coldest Week of the Year 🌬 is in 3 weeks, Martin Luther King Day 🖤 is in 4 weeks, Presidents Day 👴 is in 8 weeks, Average High is 40 β˜€οΈ is in 10 weeks, April Fools Day 🤡 is in 14 weeks, Tax Day 💰 is in 16 weeks, Earth Day 🌎 is in 17 weeks, Memorial Day Weekend Starts 🏕️ is in 5 months, Memorial Day 🇺🇸 is in 22 weeks, July 🏊🏿 is in 27 weeks, Last Sunset After 8 PM 🌆 is in 33 weeks and Average High Falls To 79 ️Degrees ⛱️️️ is in 8 months. Too soon to be thinking about autumn again.

Yellow Trail

December 20, 2018 Morning

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Two weeks to Latest Sunrise of the Winter πŸŒ„οΈ. Tomorrow is the first day of winter. Mostly sunny and 33 degrees in Delmar. Calm wind. Rather hazy though in the city. Fairly pleasant morning, but I’m more then a bit drowsy.πŸ’€

A nice morning but I had trouble getting going this morning, β˜€ as I had too many cups of coffee at the Pine Bush dinner and that effected my sleep. β˜•Β Not only did I drink coffee with dinner, I drank more when I started to choke on one of the cookies during the dinner. Kind of a busy day yesterday but after it all I did make it to the Pine Bush dinner. 🌲Taking the local to work. 🚌

The sun will set at 4:24 pm with dusk around 4:56 pm, which is 28 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies ☁ and temperatures around 40 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph.

Today will have increasing clouds ☁, with a high of 41 degrees at 1pm. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 3rd. South wind 3 to 6 mph. A year ago, we had with more clouds in the afternoon. The high last year was 40 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 1957. 8.4 inches of snow fell back in 1975.❄

Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous Moon πŸŒ” with 97% illuminated with the moon rising at 3:03 pm. The moon will set at 5:51 am. December’s Cold MoonΒ πŸŒ• will be tomorrow. The sun will rise at 7:21 am with the first light at 6:49 am, which is 32 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ„ Tonight will have 14 hours and 57 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 seconds over last night.

Tonight will rain, mainly after 9pm. The rain could be heavy at times. 🌧 Low of 39 degrees at 6pm. 20 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 18th. South wind around 6 mph becoming calm. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. Going to be a wet and warm night into the day tomorrow. In 2017, we had light snow in the evening. It got down to 21 degrees. The record low of -18 occurred back in 1942.

I continue toΒ work on writing the code ⌨ for my niece’sΒ flashing star,Β πŸ’«Β right now I’ve come up with 16 different color patterns. It’s a little hard to think of additional ones, although I’m sure there is more ramps and flashing patterns I could come up with. I want to try put as much in as possible in the code, as it would make more interesting, but after a while coming up with new patterns is hard.

The Pine Bush dinner was interesting but I’m not sure if I agree with having speakers pushing commercial products that they’re making money off of. πŸ’°Geothermal is interesting and I guess there are many benefits to solar energy although I have my doubts about those large industrial solar facilities. I think there is a lot of questions that need to be asked about developing large tracks of farm land and forest,πŸŽ‹ covering them with panels made out of hazardous materials that will pose risks for generations to come especially if they aren’t properly hauled off to landfills at the end of their lives. ⬛ Cow manure rots, farm fields revert to the woods by themselves without government intervening. But I guess I’m a minority voice, to be grouped in with the fossil fuel proponents just for asking questions of the government bureaucrats.

I will probably go out hiking somewhere on Sunday, maybe not too far away, 🚢 then out to the folks house for Christmas Eve. It looks like virtually all of the snow except for the highest locations of the Adirondacks will be gone after the heavy rains of Friday into Saturday.Β β˜”Β With the rain on Saturday, I will finish up working on my various Christmas gifts that I’ve been working on building. I got a bunch of perf and strip board in the mail the other day, for building further products.πŸ”¬Β Always a good thing on cold winter nights, except for the drafts blowing smoke from the flux burning off into my face.

For the New Years Eve long weekend,Β I am considering going camping up in the Adirondacks or maybe Brookfield.Β πŸ•Β With the snow gone all over locally, and only a little left in the Adirondacks, it might be nice to get away. I still have camp food stored away, the high calorie stuff I don’t like to eat at home and plenty of propane for at least a few nights camping, although if I do a full three nights, I might get the tank to be filled to be safe rather then sorry. A nice fire is always good, and if we have some sunny weather, some hunting and hiking would be a lot of fun. I kind of like Brookfield because those campsites you can drive up into, as if I go there, it will be in snow-free weather. Plus good cellphone reception which can make the long nights pass quicker.

As previously noted, there areΒ 2 weeks until Latest Sunrise of the Winter πŸŒ„οΈΒ when the sun will be setting at 4:34 pm with dusk at 5:06 pm. On that day in 2018, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 22 and 7 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 31 degrees. We hit a record high of 61 back in 1913.

Rays Across the Reservoir

December 6, 2018 8 AM Update

Good morning! Happy Saint Nicholas Day πŸŽ…! That’s a holiday that involves wooden shoes that are compostable I believe. A refreshing change from all that plastic and styrofoam. Four weeks to Latest Sunrise of the Winter πŸŒ„. Even while the evenings get longer the mornings will be darker. Snow flurries, gray and 24 degrees in Delmar.❄ There is a south-southwest breeze at 6 mph. πŸƒ. Things will start to thaw out at around 10 am. 🌑️

Today will be partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 38 degrees at 4pm.Β More sun later, or so I hope. Still haven’t fixed the lights in my office, so dark days are so dark. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 8th. Southwest wind 6 to 9 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies. The high last year was 53 degrees. The record high of 68 was set in 2001. 12.5 inches of snow fell back in 2003.❄

The sun will set at 4:21 pm with dusk around 4:53 pm, which is 6 seconds earlier than yesterday. Big whoop. πŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies ☁ and temperatures around 36 degrees. There will be a southwest breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 10 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 3 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a slight chance of snow showers after 8pm. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 23 degrees at 6am. Two degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical night around December 10th. Southwest wind 8 to 10 mph becoming west after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2017, we had mostly clear skies with more clouds in the early hours of the next day. It got down to 26 degrees. The record low of -7 occurred back in 1901.

Tonight I’m going to go to Tractor Supply in Glenmont get my propane tank topped off and look at buying a good quality axe. πŸ’¨ My propane tank is more than half full but I want make sure I have a full tank that way I won’t have a cold night later next week. Running out of propane is no fun, especially winter camping.

Last night I loaded a bunch of my camping gear into the truck. As I noted yesterday, I tested out the heater and confirmed that id working well.♨ Heater smelled a little like pine sap when I first turned it on, must have gotten some sap on it last year.🌲 But it works well. I didn’t try out each hose, but I feel confident that both are working fine and are dirt-free. I am thinking about ordering another lantern globe from Walmart and picking it up either on Friday or Saturday, just to be safe and m

I am thinking about getting some warm white Christmas lights to decorate the campsite, and I found some non lighted decorations around the apartment. πŸŽ„Long nights this time of year but I figure I can fill them with color. 🎁 Assuming we have as much sun as they are promising, I’m should have plenty of power for the long nights. In the winter, with out shading from the trees, the solar panel really does an awesome job.

Still chewing over what campsite is want to get, a year around plowed road is my strong preference, as is sheltered from the wind. That will keep me safe from an unexpected heavy snow fall, which seems unlikely based on next week’s forecast. Cell service also is nice to pass the time on the long nights. πŸŒƒ I’d also like a good view of the stars from the site and lots of sun for the solar panel. I’m not sure if I can have all those things, and it’s possible certain campsites will be taken by hunters or inaccessible due to snow banks, although I could always shovel them out. But I have some good ones on mind.

One problem I may is getting water during this time of year,Β as many lakes may be frozen.Β I am sure there are some springs and ponds I can break to get water though. 🌊 I’ll bring six gallons of water, and then if I can need to get more water, I’ll break the ice or find some open water. I bet Seneca Lake still has open water that I could get from the shoreline, I don’t think that’s frozen yet. This time of year, I will make sure my water bottles are connected to a long rope in case I drop them, and they start to float away in the frigid water, as happened camping in November a few years back, and I almost permanently lost it in the drink.🚰

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until Latest Sunrise of the Winter πŸŒ„Β when the sun will be setting at 4:34 pm with dusk at 5:06 pm. On that day in 2018, we had rain, drizzle, freezing drizzle, mist, cloudy skies and temperatures between 37 and 31 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 31 degrees. We hit a record high of 61 back in 1913.

Almost halfway to the North Pole

I have next week off from work.

I have next week off from work. With the shorter days and cooler weather my plans are less ambitious than what would have happened in November but I expect have a nice trip out in the Finger Lakes late autumn camping under blue skies and starry nights. 🌌

I wanted to call the Forest Service today to see if the road I’m thinking camping on is plowed in the winter in case of snow, although I don’t think there is much snow at all up there based on the forecast. β›ΊMy tent wouldn’t hold up in the snow at any rate, so I would need to head home if snow was in the forecast. I will bring a snow shovel and a bag of rock salt just in case. I’m not going to park far from the road, I’ll instead bring like 100 ft of power cord to feed power back from the accessory battery to the campsite.

I’m looking at getting a good quality axe for splitting wood. I have a hatchet and a saw but I’m thinking I will need to build up a pretty good wood supply.πŸ”₯ That said, I won’t have a fire until dusk at quarter to five o’clock and if it gets cold out I’ll probably retire to the tent for the night, and can warm up next to the heater on low, shutting it off before bed. I’ll make sure to put fresh batteries in the co detector, not that I’ve ever seen it read above “5” and that’s usually from campfire smoke blowing in the tent. I doubt I’ll stay up much past 8 or 9 pm most nights and then wake up each morning before dawn around 7 am so I can start breakfast and have coffee ready and breakfast well underway before the sun rises around 7:30 am. β˜•It’s fun watching the sun rise on a crisp morning, sitting out next to the heater. βœ‰

I got to oil up my guns well so they don’t rust with the moisture. πŸ”« I need my back tag, it’s southern zone. I got to bring my good knives too. I need to find all the tarps and bungees I have so I can build a wind block.πŸ’¨ I don’t expect a ton of wind but even a light breeze can make it cold this time of year. I need to test out the heater and lantern either on Wednesday or Thursday to make sure they are working. Don’t expect problems but it’s better to be safe. πŸ’‘

I want to park the truck where I am not only close to the road but also have good southerly exposure for the solar panel. πŸ”² I expect with the bright sunny skies I should have plenty of sun to fully charge the accessory battery and freshen up the starting battery without ever having to start the engine although I’ll probably still idle the truck for ten minutes if I’m there for multiple days to be safe. I’m figuring the accessory battery when fully charged in the cold conditions will have 40 amp hours at 12 volts each night or 480 watt hours. It’s a 105 amp hour battery but the low voltage relay disconnects the load once it falls below 12.1 volts or 50%. It actually cuts out a bit earlier than that due to line drop but it’s keeping the battery really healthy. I should be good for power as long as I limit my consumption to reasonable amounts – and there is plenty of sun hitting the panel each day.😎 Certainly when I have an off grid cabin I’d want a bigger system but for now my system works great, ever since I added the panel.

I got some books from the library and I am looking at some others to pack from home or get through interlibrary loan. πŸ“š Long nights mean a lot of reading, which will be good especially with the gas lantern and maybe electric lights. I also plan to listen a lot to the radio and podcasts. πŸ“» Where I’m camping might not have really good cell service from the campsite itself but that’s fine, I spend too much time on social media at any rate. I will check in though from time to time.

I’m working on the packing list. Lots of long underwear, insulated overalls, wool socks, boots, face mask, hats and gloves. Usual winter stuff. I might bring skis as there might be cross country skiing opportunities. I don’t know for sure though. I’ll have plenty to stay warm and if I need additional things Walmart isn’t that far away.

Also working on a menu for supplies. Higher calorie foods in the cold are good. πŸ› Been reading a lot lately about stews one can make easily on a cold night in the wilderness using common ingredients. Plan to make a lot of rolls and muffins, soup and pizza. The camp oven will be put to good use. I really should pick a few different recipes to try out for the first time as I have a lot of time at night. I’m not worried about cooking after dark with all the lights and listening to the radio or music – few animals are bold enough to raid a campsite like that. I’ll have my shotgun around if animals need a louder bang to get the message to take off. πŸͺ Don’t expect I’ll need to buy much ice during the week.

Mostly will stay near camp, hunting and hiking the nearby woods. β›Ί One day or two might visit a few other state parks and forests and maybe head down to the Watkins Glen library one day and see the lights in town at dusk – probably when I need supplies. I’ll have to go to Ithaca though if I run out of propane. Not planning to do a lot of traveling on this trip.πŸš— I lack a set return date – I took the full week off from work but I’m really thinking 4-5 nights but maybe longer if the weather is good and I’m having a good time. I don’t have a set schedule.

November 16, 2018 Morning

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Snowy Friday! First of the winter. Next Friday is Buy Nothing Day 🛍️. Still snowing fairly hard this morning and 29 degrees in Delmar. ❄ There is a north-northwest breeze at 11 mph. 🍃. I’m blaming Trump, it never used to snow in November that much, well in recent years, until the prince of darkness was selected to run our country as a better choice to the alternative. Things will start to thaw out at around 10 am. 🌡️

Today snow then turn to rain before 1pm, then a slight chance of rain showers after 4pm. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a high of 38 degrees at 1pm. 10 degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical day around December 8th. Now you know. North wind 5 to 11 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible but the rain that should be starting soon will wash it away into a globby mix of slush for opening day of deer season. A year ago, we had cloudy skies with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 53 degrees. The record high of 71 was set in 2006. Not this one bro. 3.4 inches of snow fell back in 2002.❄

The sun will set at 4:31 pm with dusk around 5:01 pm, which is 51 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for rain showers 🌧 and temperatures around 37 degrees. There will be a west breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 42 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 5 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a low of 31 degrees at 12am. Typical for tonight. West wind around 8 mph. Things will freeze back up late. In 2017, we had mostly cloudy skies. It got down to 25 degrees. The record low of 7 occurred back in 1972.

With all the talk of the snow, I didn’t think it was a bad commute although the sidewalks where kind of icy last night. ❄ Roads are mostly just wet snow, slush earlier. I guess the snow is kind of pretty and I’m not sure how long it will last as it will be in the forties on Saturday and several sunny days heading into the Thanksgiving weekend. I like snow but I’m not ready for it in November. I’ll take snow from December 15 – January 1st but after then it’s a bit annoying to say the least.

This evening I have to dig out Big Red and clear off the solar panel with a broom. It’s not a lot of snow and it’s not that icy so I don’t expect it to be a big deal. 🚗 Winter comes and goes. I’m fine with that. If I think I will be in town next weekend I might get my truck inspected then.

As previously noted, next Friday is Buy Nothing Day 🛍️ when the sun will be setting at 4:26 pm with dusk at 4:57 pm. Hopefully we will have nice weather for the long weekend, I wouldn’t mind doing some snow camping and or traveling. On that day in 2017, we had mostly cloudy skies and temperatures between 37 and 27 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 45 degrees. We hit a record high of 72 back in 1931.

Power Plant along the river

November 13, 2018 Morning

Good morning! Tonight is first Average Nightly Temperature Below Freezing 🌌. Six weeks to Christmas 🎅. Maybe it will warm up again and I can spend Christmas camping in Brookfield again. That was wild that year in 2015, warm and no snow. Hiking Glimmerglass State Park on Christmas morning was wonderful. With the heat dome in the mid west and west, I could see it pushing east by December. I’d take a 45 degree day with lots of sun for mid-December. 🌞 Climate change has its upside in the winter if you’re not a snowmobiler right now and your on the hot side of the increasingly wavy jet stream.

Heavy rain and 36 degrees in Delmar. β˜” No snow here but very cold and wet. There is a north breeze at 5 mph. 🍃.

Temperatures locally will drop below freezing at around 10 pm. β˜ƒοΈ Up north I’ve heard it’s an all snow event. Yep there getting more snow there, although I don’t think the snowmobile trails open until the end of Big Game Season.🐻

Today will rain, mainly before noon, then a slight chance of showers after 4pm. 🌧 High of 40 degrees at 3pm. Nine degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical day around December 4th. Definitely not a warm day. Northwest wind 5 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 41 degrees. The record high of 69 was set in 1964. 6 inches of snow fell back in 1886.❄

The sun will set at 4:34 pm with dusk around 5:04 pm, which is 58 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for rain showers 🌧 and temperatures around 39 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 11 mph with gusts up to 21mph. Today will have 9 hours and 48 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 13 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a slight chance of rain showers before 8pm, then a slight chance of rain and snow showers between 8pm and 9pm, then a chance of snow showers after 9pm. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 24 degrees at 6am. Eight degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical night around December 8th. Northwest wind 11 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. In 2017, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 32 degrees. The record low of 12 occurred back in 1996.

Finally bought coffee. β˜• It was good having a nice strong cup of coffee this morning. Percolator pot on the stove still works great. Simple technology is the best. Helped with getting up and heading out to the bus stop on this rather rainy and cold morning.🚏Nice and warm on the bus during this rainy morning, as I listen to Hollies heading down. I’m glad they built a bus shelter 🚍 near where I live on rainy mornings like today. Plus the heated bus shelter in the plaza for the evening trip home, now. That’s so awesome.

It’s good to be back in the routine, although it’s not going to last as I’m back in the field for work for a few more days this week 🌽 but soon it will be the normal routine where I can leave Big Red parked hooked up to the solar panel for a full week or more. 🚌That’s winter, I like to save as much gasoline and money as possible until traveling season returns, especially as my utility bills increase with the heat being turned on.β›½

When I went shopping yesterday, I forgot to buy more waffle mix. I did buy frozen cherries to top them off. 🍒 I have eggs from my parents for breakfast today. Bought cheese and sausage to complement them. 🍳 Very filling meal, I packed lunch but I’ll probably skip it in favor of having an early dinner around four.

When I’m at Walmart, I usually try to buy the biggest family sized packages of food just because it saves money and reduce waste,💰 especially during the winter when I don’t have a fire to chuck the packaging into like is so handy when camping. Plus the waffle mix boxes are just paper so I can recycle them for free, no hauling to the transfer station. Saves a lot of money also buying bulk and means fewer times of running low on supplies. I think I have the same jumbo bottle of shampoo that I bought at the beginning of the year because it’s lasted so long. Every dollar saved is one closer to owning my off-grid cabin. 🏡 It’s good to have a savings goal in life. Oh, and today is pay day.

Looking ahead, there are 6 weeks until Christmas 🎅 when the sun will be setting at 4:27 pm with dusk at 4:59 pm. On that day in 2017, we had snow, heavy fog, freezing fog, mist, squalls, partly cloudy skies and temperatures between 33 and 17 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 33 degrees. That was no 2015 that year. We hit a record high of 66 back in 1889. It was even warmer I believe on Christmas Eve 2015.

November 9, 2018 Morning

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Two weeks to Buy Nothing Day 🛍️. Thanksgiving is coming early this year as is the long weekend after it. Partly sunny and 31 degrees in Delmar. Calm wind.

Kind of a cold start to the morning, I really need to consider turning the heat on soon in my apartment. 🏠 It’s a bit chilly when I get out from under the sheets. That or may be put on a sweater. Beats though where I was staying in Syracuse and the heat was blasting every morning.

Today will rain, mainly after 2pm. β˜” High of 44 degrees at 2pm. Seven degrees below normal. Light and variable wind becoming southeast 5 to 10 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. I would consider leaving for my camping trip but not with cold rain and snow expected today. Tomorrow though will be nice so I’ll probably leave early for that. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies with more clouds in the afternoon. The high last year was 47 degrees. The record high of 71 was set in 1975. 10 inches of snow fell back in 1900.❄

This morning I have some code I want to work on for the blog, then I’ll head down to the library to do some internet work and get some books.📚 I also want to swing by the town hall and get my hunting license and later this evening – maybe fairly late after the Friday shopper are gone – to pick up food for my camping trip including coffee β˜• which I realized this morning I lack. I’m not a big coffee drinker but on a cold autumn morning that will be nice.

The sun will set at 4:38 pm with dusk around 5:08 pm, which is one minute and 4 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for rain β˜”and 42 degrees. There will be a east-southeast breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 57 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 20 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will rain before 5am, then a slight chance of rain and snow. β˜” Low of 35 degrees at 5am. Two degrees above normal. Southeast wind 6 to 11 mph becoming northwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Little or no snow accumulation expected. In 2017, we had light rain in the evening, which became light snow by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 21 degrees. The record low of 16 occurred back in 1965.

Tomorrow I’m heading up to the East Branch of the Sacandaga River for a long weekend through Tuesday morning.β›Ί It wasn’t my first choice but with the possible lake effect snow expected today, these sites are close enough to an all season road that I won’t have to worry about icy roads. Noisy yes, but at least it’s a good option and many of the sites have cellphone reception. That’s nice for passing the long nights.

My hope is to get a site with good sun so I can leave the truck shut off all weekend but the batteries fully charged. 🔌 I will set up a tent so that I can warm up by the heater and possibly hot tent if the nights are cold. Expecting a dusting or maybe a couple of inches of snow there, I would likely go for a hike back to Cod Pond and maybe back along the Stewart Creek Trail. I’m hoping not too much snow or I’ll have to haul my gear back to the site. I doubt it based on the snow fall predictions and the fact that it will be sunny and above freezing on Saturday. I will come back most likely on Tuesday or maybe Veterans Day Monday as I have to work on Wednesday through Friday. Wednesday I’ll be out out in the field to work, then Thursday it’s back to the Alfred Smith Building via the bus service. I look forward to returning to the old routine.

I checked the oil and it was down about half a quart after the many miles I drove for work this past few months, so that has been topped off. I wasn’t concerned about it. I do need to gas up the truck this evening. β›½Headlights better aimed help driving on the rural roads at night although I still don’t particularly like driving at night on those rural roads. I’ve noticed no more suspension issues lately but I haven’t cranked the wheels to a full lock lately. I think it will be fine until I schedule service later this month. Yesterday I started to hook up the shunt for the new amp meter for the solar panel but stopped when I realized that I needed more connectors. Maybe I’ll play around with it come next week.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Buy Nothing Day 🛍️ when the sun will be setting at 4:26 pm with dusk at 4:57 pm. On that day in 2017, we had mostly cloudy skies and temperatures between 37 and 27 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 45 degrees. We hit a record high of 72 back in 1931.
