A Third Battery for Big Red?

I’ve been thinking a bit about adding a second accessory battery, in the bed of my truck to double the battery reserve while camping. This would provide additional power for camping, especially camping multiple days during the winter when there is little solar radiation, or even camping at campsites with a lot of shade. I want to be able to camp multiple days with ample power.

Solar panel installed to top off battery when camping multiple days

I would probably get another matching Group 24 battery, stick it in the bed of my truck in a marine battery box, and just tap it into the system via the bus bar I have mounted in the shelf on my truck cap.

Second (Inverter) Battery, Battery Isolator (Relay), Second Fuse Tap

I could probably do it for around $120, as I have the wire and fuse, but would need the battery, a marine battery box, and a fuse holder.

A few things that give me pause …

  1. A Group 24 battery weights 45 lb.ย  While that’s not a lot of weight for a 7,000 lb pickup truck, it does add some weight, and could make things a bit further out of balance and require moving around the weight in the bed.
  2. The third battery would be mounted in the bed and take up space. While I have a fair of space, and things could put on top the battery box, it still more space taken up by the battery, plus additional wires, fuses, etc.
  3. Different age batteries could fight. I don’t really want to replace the other accessory battery, so fighting batteries could reduce the charge that they both would take. But I tend to think the advantage of the additional battery would be greater then losses from fighting.
  4. Batteries produces hydrogen when the they charge. I don’t want to be smelling hydrogen sulfide when I sleep, or have it be burning me. While I think the bed is fairly well ventilated, I don’t want hydrogen to build up in the cap and go bang like the Hindenburg blimp.
  5. The second accessory battery would be beyond the low voltage shut-off, as it would be connected directly to bus bar that powers the accessories in the truck cap. That means I wouldn’t have under-voltage protection for that battery, but with the two batteries for reserve, my very modest load, and the solar, I doubt I would have too many under-voltage conditions.
  6. It’s additional load on alternator and solar panel, which means it will take longer to charge two batteries even if it takes longer to discharge, and discharge cycles will be less deep.
  7. Plus it’s $120 bucks that wouldn’t be in my wallet anymore. While I would get a lot of use out of it, and I could use the battery box for other projects, batteries don’t last forever.

Big Red

I want to give this a bit more thought, but if I do set this up, I’d like to have it all working and fully tested before my Independence Weekend trip up to Moose River Plains.

May 18, 2019 Night

Good evening! Mostly cloudy and 61 degrees โ˜ in Delmar. Calm wind. The dew point is 45 degrees. The skies will clear tomorrow around 9 am.

It was a nice day, the Lupine Festival went well and I followed it up with a couple miles walking ๐Ÿšถ around Blueberry Hill. Not a lot of lupine in bloom now but some is starting and I think I saw a couple of Karner Blue Butterflies on my walk but they are sure tiny, fast moving and hard to capture on the camera. ๐Ÿ“ท

Yes, I had a lot of fun with the crayons โœand coloring our coloring book. I really like coloring. Maybe it’s a kid thing but it’s a fun way to pass the time. I’m actually thinking about getting some colored pencils and printing out some pictures, maybe using the trace edges function in Inkscape and playing with coloring like up at camp. It could be very therapeutic. Might be fun with nature study, another activity I really enjoy but not in black fly season.

The Pine Bush is such an asset to Albany ๐ŸŒฒthat so many people overlook. A wilderness in a city. It is a bit noisy in parts though due to the traffic. They are really doing a good job of maintaining the beautiful unique ecosystem – they are burning ๐Ÿ”ฅ 250 acres a year with a hope of getting closer to 500 acres although it’d tough to get favorable enough conditions and days when they can control the smoke from the burn. That’s a lot of acreage for sure. I don’t know about how they do it in the preserve but it’s fascinating to watch videos ๐Ÿ“น of farmers and ranchers burn pastures out west. Fire is a powerful tool when used respectfully.

Tonight will have a slight chance of showers before 4am, then a slight chance of showers after 5am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 52 degrees at 5am. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 30th. Maximum dew point of 47 at 6am. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 49 degrees. The record low of 29 occurred back in 1981.

Tonight will have a Waning Gibbous Moon ๐ŸŒ– with 98% illuminated. The moon will set at 6:14 am. The Last Quarter Moon is next Saturday with partly cloudy skies. The Strawberry Moon ๐ŸŒ is on Sunday, June 16th. The sun will rise at 5:29 am with the first light at 4:56 am, which is 56 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 9 hours and 14 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 55 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers, mainly after noon. Partly sunny ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 78 degrees at 3pm. Eight degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 14th. I’ll take some June weather. Best weather of the day tomorrow is expected in the morning. A touch of humidity tomorrow too. Maximum dew point of 62 at 5pm. South wind 13 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 58 degrees. The record high of 91 was set in 1989. There was a dusting of snow in 1976.โ„

I got two more HC-05 Bluetooth modules in the mail from China today. โœ‰ They came so quickly. Hopefully I can get these to talk together properly. I’ll use the current ones for other projects like the smart solar panel charge relay I want to build for my truck eventually. It would be nice to check the voltage of my batteries right from my phone. ๐Ÿ”‹ Hopefully I’ll find some time to work on those projects in the near future.

Speaking of batteries, I brought my extra battery and swapped it in my phone which kept it going all day strong ๐Ÿ’ช. I’m thinking of getting one of those battery banks to use while wilderness camping but just swapping out the battery in my phone is a nice lightweight alternative. ๐Ÿ“ฑ

The long range for Memorial Day Weekend looks to be fairly sunny โ˜€ with temperatures that are seasonable. A few chances for rain but generally the forecast for next weekend is quite positive but not real warm. But that’s to be expected in late May. Remember, the weather in late May is closest to mid September in Albany. ๐ŸŒธ

In four weeks on June 15 the sun will be setting at 8:35 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 20 minutes and 54 seconds later then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had partly sunny, rain showers and temperatures between 75 and 56 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 78 and 57 degrees. The record high of 96 degrees was set back in 1988.

Looking ahead, June ๐Ÿน is in 2 weeks, Average High is 80 ๐Ÿ– is in 5 weeks, Hottest Time of the Year ๐Ÿ˜… is in 8 weeks, Ugly Truck Day ๐Ÿšš is in 9 weeks, Average High Falls To 79 ๏ธDegrees โ›ฑ๏ธ๏ธ๏ธ is in 14 weeks and Average High 70 ๐ŸŽ‘ is in 18 weeks.

March 8, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Not yet a summer get away weekend but Memorial Day Weekend ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ is only 11 weeks away at this point.๐Ÿ• Attention friendly strangers in black sedans, Next Friday is Ides of March โœ. Cold but very sunny โ˜€ around 13 degrees in Delmar. Not a whole lot of warmth in the sun today. There is a south-southwest breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The current wind chill is 2. Not a really good day for frosty, as only patches of snow remain around. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will finally start to thaw out at around noontime. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ Thumpty-thump, thumpty-thump, look at frosty go.

Remarkably chilly morning walking down to the express bus stop.๐Ÿš Despite all the sun โ˜€ there isn’t a lot of warmth in the air. I also left the heat turned down last night because I didn’t think it was that cold โ„ and honestly I’m trying to save money ๐Ÿ’ต however possible to make it over the fiscal cliff known as tax season. I’m hoping at this point that I won’t have to turn the heat up at night night because the nights won’t be that cold. I’m not seeing a lot of below normal weather in the forecast for the next week.

It’s just kind of depressing to read my home energy report the utility sends me and see that 94% of my winter energy โšก use is from heating. ๐Ÿ”ฅ My heating bills have been higher this year than last year according to the report, but then again we had the cold spell and sometimes I’ll turn it up a bit when I’m cold. But every time I turn up the heating knob, I realize I am stealing from my future in two ways — less money to save ๐Ÿ’ธ and more climate change from the burnt natural gas.๐ŸŒ I do find my blaze-orange hoodie keeps me warm, so I wear it a lot more and just are cold morning. Eventually when I own land and home, insulation is going to be a priority, as will having an efficient, wood or maybe coal stove. Energy security is a big concern for me, I’ve seen too many people struggle after they loose power or their propane supplier doesn’t show up promptly for re-fills. Things are only going to get worse as climate change gets worse.

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 36 degrees at 3pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 22nd. Where are you Mr. March weather? Probably in Florida. Southwest wind around 8 mph. Might be good though for a lunch time walk ๐Ÿšถ . A year ago, we had partly cloudy in the morning, which became light snow by afternoon. The high last year was 35 degrees. The record high of 68 was set in 2012. 6.5 inches of snow fell back in 2013.โ„

Today back In 1965, Thirty-five hundred United States Marines ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธโ›ด are the first American land combat forces committed during the Vietnam War. ๐Ÿ”ซ The Vietnam War was getting underway, a quagmire that would ultimately undermine the Great Society plans and be one of America’s longest wars. Never declared a war, it still did a lot of harm to our country to say nothing of Vietnam and lead to a lot of unnecessary deaths.โ˜

The sun will set at 5:53 pm with dusk around 6:21 pm, which is one minute and 12 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 34 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 11 hours and 35 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 54 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 18 degrees at 6am. Five degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical night around February 20th. South wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. In 2018, we had light snow. It got down to 27 degrees. The record low of -14 occurred back in 1943.

Tomorrow will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 41 degrees at 3pm. Typical temperature for a change. Not above or below normal, just normal. Doesn’t happen very frequently — only four times over the past winter. Calm wind becoming northeast around 5 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had partly cloudy in the morning, which became light snow by afternoon. The high last year was 37 degrees. The record high of 81 was set in 2016. 6.9 inches of snow fell back in 1961.โ„

Tomorrow looks like a nice day. I am thinking about meeting my parents for breakfast, ๐Ÿณ and then going out for a hike/ski in the Heldebergs and look for sheds ๐ŸฆŒ or at least enjoy the beautiful day.๐Ÿž I’m trying to minimize the miles on my truck and not filling up the gas tank for a while, but I’d hate to miss the nice weather on Saturday as who knows how much longer the snow will be around. Gas isn’t that expensive, โ›ฝ and I’m not planning to head out that far, and next week like this week, I plan to keep the truck parked through Saturday or maybe Sunday, ๐Ÿ…ฟso it won’t be burning any fuel in the mean-time.

Looking ahead to Sunday, rain, snow, and sleet, becoming all rain after 11am. ๐ŸŒจ High near 42. Southeast wind 8 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. Typical average high for the weekend is 41 degrees. I emailed Mr. Wolcott to see if he’s around on Sunday, I might go over to his house. I could take a bus, or I might drive this week, as I would like to wash the salt off my truck ๐Ÿ› and pick up the few groceries I need. I’m avoiding a “full” shop this weekend, to save money, and because I have way too much food at home right now. If I didn’t have to wash the salt off the truck, I’d probably just leave Big Red Parked until next week. No problem with keeping the accessory battery fully charged, it was at 15.4 volts this morning with the stronger sun of spring time.

Sunday is the first day of Daylight Savings Time. โŒš I know it doesn’t actually save time but it does mean more light in the evening ๐ŸŒ‡ which once it warms up and I’m not working late at work, I can go down to the park with a book ๐Ÿ“™. I really look forward to the change, even if it means I will have to get an extra hour early up for work. But with the days getting longer so quickly, I don’t think that’s a big deal.๐Ÿ•œ I already set the analog clocks ahead in my bathroom and kitchen, the next step will be to set the clock in my truck and reprogram my microcontrollers with the time change. I know I probably could hard-code in the time change to the controllers, but it’s just easier to re-flash the memory twice a year. For about a week, it will be dark when I wake up for work, but with lights coming on automatically, it shouldn’t be that difficult to wake in the morning. Plus, I can go back to setting my alarm clock each day.

In four weeks on April 5 the sun will be setting at 7:26 pm (Daylight Savings Time),๐ŸŒ„ which is one hour, 32 minutes and 23 seconds later then today. In 2018 on that day, we had a rather cold but partly cloudy day with some snow showers and temperatures between 39 and 24 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 54 and 33 degrees. The last few Aprils have been pretty cold, but I’m not totally sure that will be the trend this year. The record high of 82 degrees was set back in 1928.

Looking forward to finally nice weather, and getting out of town on the weekends once the snow bites the bucket. ๐Ÿ• It’s going to happen, it always does. Sure many roads will be closed for mud season, but there are still many places I can go once the snow is gone. NY 8 in the Adirondacks comes to mind, especially early May before the black fly season has started. Solar panel should work good this time of year. The fiscal cliff I face, is manageable, and with some careful planning, I should be able to enjoy adventures in late April into May, depending a lot on how busy my work schedule is and the weather. I want to definitely do some trout fishing, ๐ŸŽฃ plus have a nice big fire up in the woods ๐Ÿ”ฅ with a cold one or two.ย  Snow camping is fine, but I much prefer truck cap camping, and not tromping through the snow.

Looking ahead, Ides of March โœ is in 1 weeks, Memorial Day Weekend Starts ๐Ÿ•๏ธ is in 11 weeks and Dog Days of Summer ๐ŸŒป is in 17 weeks.

March 5, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Mostly sunny and 13 degrees in Delmar. Calm wind. I don’t know your opinion on this weather, but in my book it’s pretty darn cold for March. Just waiting for God to flip the giant relay switch and with a loud clunk it like the relay in my truck it will be eighty degrees. There are 4 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at Friday around 1 pm. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ Seems legit, by then the average high is supposed to be in the forties.

It was a cold start this morning I turned up the heat ๐Ÿ”ฅ before bed last night but with the cold it never caught up. I’m ready for winter to be done so I can shut off the heat and recover the $50-60 in my budget each month. โ˜บPlus I look forward to the fresh air this morning and hearing the birds chirping. ๐Ÿฆ

Today will have increasing clouds โ˜, with a high of 26 degrees at 2pm. 14 degrees below normal. West wind 3 to 7 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy. The high last year was 38 degrees. The record high of 71 was set in 1964. 8.6 inches of snow fell back in 1917.โ„

The sun will set at 5:50 pm with dusk around 6:18 pm, which is one minute and 13 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies โ˜ and temperatures around 25 degrees. There will be a west breeze at 6 mph. It was a nice sunset last night at work but I don’t expect such nice weather for tonight. ๐ŸŒ… Today will have 11 hours and 27 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 53 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a slight chance of snow showers before 2am, then a slight chance of snow showers after 3am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 10 degrees at 5am. 12 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around 0 at 6am; West wind 6 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. I do not approve. In 2018, we had cloudy in the evening, which became mostly sunny by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 23 degrees. The record low of -21 occurred back in 1948.

Tomorrow will have a slight chance of snow showers after 7am. Mostly sunny ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 21 degrees at 1pm. 19 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around 9 at 1pm; West wind 7 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had cloudy. The high last year was 45 degrees. The record high of 63 was set in 1974. 10.5 inches of snow fell back in 1887.โ„

Tomorrow is pay day which I’ll leave it to you Google former NYC councilman Dan O’Halloran most famous quote that I have posted in my bedroom. ๐Ÿ’ฐI wish I made sacs of money ๐Ÿ’ต but my budget is always so tight after I invest and save both for retirement and to eventually become a landowner in a freer state then New York. Got to pay the bills in the meantime. I discovered this morning ironing my shirt that the cuffs are getting worn out. More expense, grr. ๐Ÿ‘นI’m going to have to look at look at getting more dress shirts at JC Penny maybe this weekend. I’m annoyed about ordering all those pants ๐Ÿ‘– and the blazer now. I guess it’s only going to be about $50 for two dress shirts but I’m facing a serious fiscal cliff in my budget come late March and early April. Maybe I’ll try to scrimp on groceries next week, only buying the most basic supplies and try to fully use up what I have in the pantry. If I only spend $10-15 on food ๐Ÿฒ next week I can probably make things work.

I anticipate a bit of a financial pinch come April as I have to pay my car insurance, rent, utility bills and taxes all in about a two week expanse. ๐Ÿ’ธIt’s going to be tough with all those bills due at once, especially as I have fairly big tax bills as I don’t make quarterly tax payments. I’m going to have to do that soon though or I risk getting fined for underpayment of taxes. I’ll figure it out, I might have to dip into the rainy day fund or savings to make my bills but I’ll figure it out. Investment gains are good even if it means paying a lot in taxes.

Today in 1970, Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty goes into effect after ratification by 43 nations. ๐Ÿš€In 1933, during the height of the Great Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt declares a “bank holiday”, closing all U.S. banks and ๐ŸŽŠ freezing all financial transactions.

Definitely got cold โ„ as the day progressed yesterday although honestly once I got moving on my evening walk, it wasn’t too bad. Sure I’d like it be warmer out so I could get a break on my heating bills but so be it, spring is just around the corner.๐ŸŒฟ

Got out of work around 7:30, bus ๐Ÿš had me home by eight. I’m still really surprised they’re running the articulated bus in the evening. Maybe it’s going back to the depot. Who knows. I had too much for dinner because I was hungry when I got home ๐Ÿก, played on my phone ๐Ÿ“ฑ for a bit then went out for my evening ๐ŸŒƒ walk.

Not a half bad walk but kind of chilly and cloudy โ˜. Certainly better evenings for a walk. Farm ๐Ÿšœ down the road definitely was a bit pungent with manure tonight ๐Ÿฎ, they must be spreading it now after they got done with the spoiled silage. No deer out in the field tonight, I think the snow is too deep for them to graze plus it was pretty cold out.

Continuing to research hand drills for drilling holes in boards for building LED signs. I wanted to just get a basic one ๐Ÿ”จ at Lowe’s the other day but they didn’t have one. I thought ๐Ÿ’ญ about trying Delmar hardware. Maybe thats my best bet, I feel like they would have one probably cost competitive to what I’d find online. I don’t want an electric drill so I can work late at night without disturbing the neighbors.

I got the two ACS 712 amperage metering boards I ordered from AliExpress. โœ‰ Terminals on the board are a bit tiny in my opinion for wires designed to carry up to 30 amp but they may work okay for monitoring the output of the solar panel and other loads in the truck cap. I’m just a little bit concerned about voltage โšก drop. I’ll have to experiment more.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. ๐Ÿ˜• Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 39. Sunday, rain and snow likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 42. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Typical average high for the weekend is 41 degrees. I’m trying to save money so I’ll probably stay home on Saturday but I might walk ๐Ÿšถ to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center. I probably should figure out some time to continue working on that history project I’m working on, and some time to work m some of the various electronics projects, โŒš to say nothing of riding the exercise bike ๐Ÿšฒ more.

I know it’s still early March but I’m definitely ready for camping โ›บ season to get underway but everywhere still there is a ton of snow. I certainly don’t expect the Adirondacks to be completely snow free until late April or even early May. ๐ŸŒธ Maybe a bit sooner in lower elevations but most places where I like to camp have snow much longer than Albany. Hopefully by then I’ll be over the financial cliff but if not, I guess the bills won’t come due until a few paychecks later on the credit card. ๐Ÿ’ณ

In four weeks on April 2 the sun will be setting at 7:22 pm (Daylight Savings Time),๐ŸŒ„ which is one hour, 32 minutes and 34 seconds later then today. In 2018 on that day, we had partly cloudy, snow showers and temperatures between 47 and 28 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 52 and 32 degrees. The record high of 77 degrees was set back in 2010. So who knows what the weather will be like for the second day of trout season. ๐Ÿ

Looking ahead, Cinco de Mayo ๐Ÿค  is in 2 months, 8:30 PM Sunset ๏ธโ›ฑ๏ธ is in 3 months, Dog Days of Summer ๐ŸŒป is in 4 months, Last Sunset After 8:30 PM ๐ŸŒ† is in 19 weeks and Election Day 2020 ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ is in 87 weeks.

Saving for tomorrow and distant tomorrow

One of the things I often think about is how best to manage my money — is it better to invest more towards short term, mid-term, or long-term goals like retirement? I try to have a balanced plan.

I’ve made it a priority to retire relatively young, or at least be in a place where I can live outside of a small town, where I can own land and an off-grid cabin, heat with wood, hunt and trap my own land, own more guns, have nice 4×4 truck, tractor and implements, a four-wheeler, burn my trash, hunt and hobby farm my land. Where I don’t have be stuck living the Albany, New York-life forever. I want to live where I can have my freedom to be my own person, protected from the evils of modern society.

All those things take a big chunk of cash, especially if I’m uninterested in getting a bank loan and want enough land that I can burn or shoot whatever I want without pissing off the neighbors. Land and being in the back woods is important to my future. I don’t mind working, but I don’t want to be tied to the big city for the rest of my life.

Farm on Jersey Street

Short-Term: High-Interest Savings and Certificates of Deposit

For the short-term, I save each paycheck in various FDIC-insured accounts, in case of job loss, sickness, or injury — and more immediate needs not covered by the ordinary budget. I don’t ordinary touch this money, but sometimes there is something big I might want to get like a new toy, that’s not in my budget. But I’ve cut back a lot on expensive toys now, as I’m pretty happy with what I have now.

I realize within 5 years I will probably have to think about replacing Big Red, as it starts to wear out. I don’t drive the truck that much, but it is getting older at this point, and it’s tough with our salty climate.๏ธ I’m also not sure how good the engine is — for a while it burned oil. I want to make sure I have a reliable vehicle, though I admit I will probably will go for something cheaper next like a 3/4 ton 4×4 regular-cab, long-bed work-truck. I probably would not lift my truck or get any kind of fancy features, although I’d probably get a cap with a rack to mount the solar panel. Or I might get a lower-cost sedan and do more tent camping. I don’t know, car prices have grown enormously over the past decade. So that’s going to take a pretty big hit on cash.

This money is taxed when I first earned it, and the interest earned is taxed on a yearly-basis like ordinary income, essentially increasing my income as far as the tax man is concerned.

Farmland a Little Ways Beyond Somerset

Mid-Term: Low Cost Index Funds and Sector Funds

Each pay period I also make a payment to a nationally-known online brokerage firm to buy low-cost, low-free index funds and some sector funds. While the biggest chunk of money there is in total-market US and international funds, I also have some bond funds, some small and mid-caps high-growth/high-risk, and some energy industry sector funds which provide some protection against high energy prices.

I don’t plan to touch that money for another 10-20 years, which is between 2028-2038, as I want that money to continue to grow, and it’s heavily invested in things that gain value quickly but also have substantial downside risk, at least in the short-run. Another deep recession, like we had in 2008 could definitely set me back a few years on those investments, although in the past few years have seen substantial growth, so I’m not really worried even if we have a great depression the size of 90 years ago.

I don’t really need this money today or tomorrow, but I will want it when it comes to buying land and the off-grid cabin, and other related improvements. So I am more then willing to take short-term risk, which is somewhat mitigated by the fact that I practice cost-averaging by buying a little more each paycheck. Even if I buy high one year, and the market falls the next year, the next year it’s offset by the fact I am getting more shares at a lower price.

This money is taxed when I first earn it, and the tax man considers the dividends I reinvest into buying more shares, income each year. So I pay the tax man each year for the privilege of my total number of shares as they grow each year. Once I cash out these index funds to buy land and the cabin, I will have to pay long-term capital gain tax on the gains over the years. While paying long-term capital gain tax sucks, it’s less then if it was taxed as ordinary income. New York State taxes capital gains as ordinary income, so that’s yet another reason to leave New York when I’m at that point in my life.

The unfortunate truth, is when I need this money to buy land and the off-grid cabin, it will probably hit with a fairly big federal tax bill on the capital gains. In the point when I touch this money, my hope is already establish a residency in a state without no or at least low state capital gains tax. I probably would rent for at least a year in that future state, to avoid state taxes and give myself more time to look at properties I would ultimately want to buy.

Early Retirement: Deferred Compensation and Pension

I am hoping to retire around age 55 or so. A lot will depend on the affordability of healthcare and what options are available in the area where I buy my land. That would bring me to around year 2038, which sounds like a long-time away but it’s only 19 years. Assuming I get enough credit in with the state government, I will have 30 years in by age 55, and I will be able to sell part of my sick time for health insurance. I also am a vested member of state pension system, so there will hopefully be some money in that state constitutionally-protected benefit when I retire. Like social security, a pension is the part of the three-legged stool, but I don’t necessarily expect them to be all that strong in come years — although I have hope that our political leaders will make wise choices and strengthen both of these systems to ensure promised benefits are still part of our society by my retirement.

In support of this goal, I’ve been doing a pre-tax deferred compensation 457 plan, which allows me to reduce my gross income each year for tax purposes like with an ordinary IRA but at an amount up to $19,000 a year. Yeah, I don’t reach that number at this point. This is a good thing, especially for somebody like me who doesn’t have student loans or mortgage interest or local property tax deduction to use to reduce my total income. The catch if with the program you can only contribute a percentage of income earned by state or local government employment, it doesn’t count from other employers or sources. I have a second job, that is not covered by deferred compensation.

When you withdraw this amount you have to pay tax on the total amount it like it was ordinary income — you don’t get a break on capital gains like you do with other kinds of long-term capital gains. If I move out of New York State to a low-tax state without taxation on retirement savings, I will never pay any state income tax on this state income.

With 457 plans like deferred compensation, there is no age restrictions on when you can start taking money from it, although you are required to take a certain percentage of it starting by age 70.

Later in Retirement: Roth IRA

Early in my career, before I started in state service, I started contributing to a Roth IRA, over the years worked it up to maximum yearly contribution, which is now $6,000 a year. Money for Roth IRA is put in after tax-income, so you use money after payroll taxes to fund them. While limited, they have some definite advantages — namely they are very flexible in what you can put in them, tied to no one funding source like the 457 plans, and with the Roth IRA are tax-free to withdraw from after age 59, as long as you take a minimum distribution before age 70.

Another thing I like about the Roth IRA, is the contribution limit is relatively low at $6,000 so it’s a goal that can be fairly easily met each year by biweekly contributions. It is funded automatically, no matter if I am making money from my state work or private sector work. It just feels like an accomplishment to hit that number each year, and watch as it grows. I typically use target-based retirement funds, which are a low-cost mixture of index and bond funds.

I don’t plan to live a fancy life in my later years, but I will have to repair and replace equipment, and still have money for groceries, fuel and supplies. Even if I don’t have an expensive electricity or cable bill, my truck and toys will still need work. I will need groceries and supplies.

Savings and Investing is A Ways and Means

There is a lot of glamor on television about being rich. I doubt I will ever be too rich to chop my own wood, burn my own trash, or compost my own waste. I like doing things myself, and while there are some things I lack the skills to do, I’ve not one for living a life of luxury or excess. But I am working to save and invest, as a way and mean to a better future. Money buys essential land, property and services; it’s required for a better tomorrow. A dollar saved to today, is put away to grow towards a bigger dollar tomorrow. A buck might not seem like a lot today, but when you add a buck here and buck there, it adds up over a sufficient period of time. What seems like a distant future, it really only a matter of time until a better life tomorrow.

February 21, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Four weeks to Spring ๐ŸŒท. Ain’t that good news. It was cloudy to start out the day, now partly cloudy but clearing and 36 degrees in Delmar. โ˜ There is a south breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. There are 2 inches of snow on the ground but melting fast. โ˜ƒ It looks like the ice storm they were threatening did not materialize to much, it’s already getting nicer out. Maybe not spring but warm enough to turn the heat back down. ๏ธTemperatures will drop below freezing at around 11 pm.

Even on a dark mornings like today started out, โ˜ the lights in my bedroom continue to be quite bright making it easier to get up and going. That said, by getting to bed at a proper time and then the earlier sunrise ๐ŸŒ… makes it much easier to get out of bed. โ˜•ย Waffles and coffee for breakfast, took a shower, walked down to the express bus.๐Ÿš

The severe weather turned out to be a bust. โ˜”Some rain coming home but the treated surfaces weren’t bad at all. This morning the roads were fine, and the sidewalks weren’t that slippery but I think they could have used a plow.๐ŸŒจย By morning, it was partly sunny and the roads just wet. I think by the end of the day, the sidewalks will have melted away, with the sun and warmth coming today, along with a wind which will probably expose some bare spots on the ground.

Today will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 43 degrees at 12pm. Seven degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical day around March 12th. Breezy, with a south wind 6 to 11 mph becoming west 18 to 23 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 37 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, which cleared to mostly sunny conditions by afternoon. The high last year was 73 degrees. That’s the record high for the day. This winter though, it seems like winter won’t hit . 11.0 inches of snow fell back in 1929.โ„

The sun will set at 5:35 pm with dusk around 6:03 pm, which is one minute and 17 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 39 degrees. Breezy, 21 mph breeze โ›… from the west with gusts up to 33mph. Today will have 10 hours and 53 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 48 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 27 degrees at 5am. Eight degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical night around March 19th. Breezy, with a northwest wind 10 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph. In 2018, we had mostly clear in the evening, which became light snow by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 21 degrees. The record low of -08 occurred back in 1963.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 42 degrees at 2pm. Six degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical day around March 10th. Northwest wind 7 to 10 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy in the morning, which became mostly sunny by afternoon. The high last year was 40 degrees. The record high of 68 was set in 1997. 14.8 inches of snow fell back in 1893.โ„

After I posted my essay yesterday about not having Internet,ย I got yet another glossy advertisement from Spectrum Cable,ย trying to get me to sign up. ๐Ÿ•ธย I tossed it promptly in the recycling bin.ย โ™ปย I am quite happy not having Internet at home, it’s just obnoxious how they always try to get me to sign up.

I have to say that the Save the Pine Bush dinner last night was one of the most interesting ones I’ve been to in a long time.๐Ÿ“ข Ward Stone was great as was Keith Shue who between the two gave us a good background of the ANSWERS plant’s history and the troublesome future. I was very surprised to learn that should the state put a co generation plant in the ANSWERS facility it will increase emissions by over 50% over the existing steam plant, ๐Ÿญand it will be running nearly all the time compared to the steam plant that only runs part time, especially in modest weather.โ™จ

I really like the improvements to Google Maps on the transit๐ŸšŒ front – I finally upgraded the app which doesn’t happen automatically as I have limited space.๐Ÿ“ฒ I like how the app is cleaner with transit information, tells you in big numbers how long you have to wait, how late the bus is running compared to what it’s scheduled to arrive at. Just update Google Maps and try out the app. Mine doesn’t update automatically, as my phone is always short of memory. I also am finding the battery isn’t a holding a charge very long. I may have to think about plunking down $50 for a new phone come summer. But I will have gotten 2 years out of the Tracphone, which is pretty good for those cheap phones that are just landfill fodder — although even expensive phones these days are basically the same thing.ย ๐Ÿ—‘

I am continuing to work on figuring out on how to build my smart relay for my truck.ย It makes a lot of sense to integrate the GPS logger I built with it now that I think about it more, ๐Ÿ—บย and maybe also bluetooth so I can monitor battery voltages,ย ๐Ÿ”‹ย and the status of the system from my phone when I’m sitting by the campfire. Thenย  I was thinking I could use a hall-effect sensor with it too, and monitor the amperage coming off the solar panel, so I could easily see the power coming off the panel. But then again, that would make the code a lot more complicated. I have ideas, the thing I have build them so they can become more then ideas.๐Ÿค”

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. ๐Ÿ˜• Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 42. Calm wind becoming south around 5 mph in the afternoon. Going to be great weather for the Save the Pine Bush Hike, assuming the trails aren’t too slushy.ย ๐Ÿ‘ขย Although who knows how much snow will be left come Saturday, and the sand doesn’t always trap the water and muck too much. Sunday, rain before 1pm, then showers likely after 1pm. High near 51. ๐Ÿ’ฆย At least it will keep the heat at minimum over the weekend, assuming it’s not too damp and chilly inside. I doubt though I’ll be opening the windows, but at least I’ll save on heating, which is good because my bills have been kind of high this year Chance of precipitation is 80%. Typical average high for the weekend is 37 degrees. Above average for a few days then, cooling down for next week.

In four weeks, which is one month from now, is theย First Day of Springย ๐ŸŒทย  on March 21 the sun will be setting at 7:09 pm (Daylight Savings Time),ย ๐ŸŒ„ which is one hour, 33 minutes and 41 seconds later then today. Dusk is at 7:38 PM, which means I might be able to go to the park after work, if it’s not too wet or cold.๐Ÿž In 2018 on that day, we had cloudy and temperatures between 37 and 25 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 46 and 27 degrees. The record high of 78 degrees was set back in 1921. I know I am definitely looking forward to spring, especially once the snow melts and I can start spending more time in the wilderness camping ๐Ÿ•and having a nice fire or two.๐Ÿ”ฅ

Looking ahead, Spring ๐ŸŒท is a month away, Average High is 50 ๐ŸŒธ is in 5 weeks, Average High is 60 ๐ŸŒผ is in 8 weeks, Easter ๐Ÿฐ is in 2 months, Average High is 70 ๐Ÿฎ is in 12 weeks (cows like to chew their cud when it’s not too warm), Independence Day ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ is in 19 weeks and August ๐ŸŒป is in 23 weeks.

After Dark

February 8, 2019 Morning

Good afternoon! Yeah, it’s Friday! The sign in my bedroom says three weeks to March 🌨. Clearing skies and 42 degrees in Delmar. โ›… There is a west breeze at 10 mph. 🍃. There is a just mud and lots of clumbs of snow on ground. โ˜ƒ Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 5 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ Hopefully with the wind, it won’t be so icy come through evening.

I am tired today because I didn’t sleep well last night. 😩 I kept waking up during the night and I had trouble sleeping. Not totally sure why, although often in the later part of the winter I have trouble sleeping. I feel much better when I can wake up in the wilderness and few times a month. It can get quite stuffy in my apartment in the winter.

Today will have a chance of showers, mainly before noon. Mostly sunny, with a temperature falling to around 34 by 5pm. โ˜€Breezy, with a west wind 10 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 33 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny in the morning, which became partly cloudy by afternoon. The high last year was 26 degrees. The record high of 52 was set in 1925. 14.0 inches of snow fell back in 1895.โ„

The sun will set at 5:18 pm with dusk around 5:47 pm, which is one minute and 19 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for partly clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 34 degrees. The wind chill around sunset will be 23. โ˜ƒ๏ธ Breezy, 20 mph breeze โ›… from the west with gusts up to 36mph. Today will have 10 hours and 18 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 33 seconds over yesterday. A month out from now it will be over 11 hours and 33 minutes of daylight each day. Grows fast near spring time.

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌤, with a low of 19 degrees at 6am. Three degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical night around February 21st. Maximum wind chill around 3 at 6am; Breezy, with a west wind 21 to 24 mph, with gusts as high as 41 mph. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 2 degrees. The record low of -20 occurred back in 1934.

So we finally made it to a Friday. That’s a good thing. I had a family thing to attend to this morning🏯 but I’ll be in later today to work and might get some drinks after work depending how I feel. 🍺 I’m just a little tired. This appointment is taking longer than I expected but hopefully I’ll be able to get to work close to 1 pm.

Tomorrow will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 31 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical day around January 30th. Breezy, with a northwest wind 15 to 24 mph, with gusts as high as 43 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny in the morning, which became partly cloudy by afternoon. The high last year was 30 degrees. The record high of 57 was set in 1925. 13.7 inches of snow fell back in 1906.โ„

Looking ahead to Sunday, mostly sunny 🌞, with a high near 30. Calm wind becoming west around 6 mph in the morning. Typical average high for the weekend is 33 degrees.

I don’t have any real plans for the weekend although I’m thinking come Saturday I will probably stay home and if I go anywhere it just will be for a walk along the rail trail. 🚶 I’ve been trying to have a Saturday where I can avoid going anywhere with red. Sunday I’ll probably go up to Partridge Run for a nice walk, I don’t think there will be enough snow left for skiing. I thought about going to the Adirondack Outdoorsman show or even camping but I think this should be a stay in town weekend. I’m trying to drive as little as possible to save for the summer. โ›ฝ

Maybe for the long weekend next week I will head up to the Adirondacks to ski and camp but that is still to be decided. Depends how much snow we get in the mean time and forecast for the long weekend. โ›บ It looks like a warming trend is underway and honestly its now to the point where most days should be close to above freezing or even a bit above. By next week the average high temperature is 34 or 35. I wonder if they will have the ice races up north next week? I should check that out if it’s happening on Lake Algonquin.

In four weeks on March 8 the sun will be setting at 5:53 pm,🌄 which is 35 minutes and 18 seconds later then today. In 2018 on that day, we had snow and temperatures between 35 and 29 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 41 and 23 degrees. The record high of 68 degrees was set back in 2012. Definitely looking forward to nicer weather come March and April.

I was going to go for a walk yesterday but it started to rain. 💦 Instead I stayed home and rode the exercise bike while watching some videos that I downloaded including a whole series on trapping. Then I worked on some code, maps and future blog posts.

I am continuing to work on the code that drives the lights in my bedroom. ๐Ÿ’ก After doing some debugging I discovered that the problem with the lamp over my bed is that the code isn’t always listening for the full string coming over the Bluetooth, so I need to write some code that adds a start and end code so it keeps listening until it receives the end code. I also fixed a bug with the timer function which works properly now that I figured out the bug with the pointer not being properly initialized.

I also started doodling out some of the code for another project I’m building – a smart control for the relay that connects the accessory and starting batteries on my truck,🔋 so that when the solar panels has ample power it also will top off the starting battery and not the accessory battery alone. Good for while camping should I open and close the door a lot or should I leave the truck parked and extended period in the winter.

Looking ahead, March 🌨 is in 3 weeks, Ides of March โœ is in 5 weeks, Memorial Day Weekend Starts 🏕๏ธ is in 15 weeks and Dog Days of Summer 🌻 is in 21 weeks.
