August 12, 2020 Afternoon

Good afternoon! Sunny and 79 degrees at the Finger Lakes National Forest. ๐ŸŒž There is a north-northwest breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 55 degrees.

This morning was a bit more breezy than expected but that’s kind of the norm on the Hector Backbone. ๐Ÿƒ Kind of a quiet and lazy morning today, I’m in no rush to get going. ๐Ÿ’ค I kind of wanted to catch up on sleep and avoid a crazy morning rushing to get to the park before the parking lot fills and closes. That said, it seems like my fears ๐Ÿ˜ฑ are rather misplaced – there has been no evidence of that happening this week. Much less hot and humid.

Enjoyed a nice quiet morning in the hammock ๐Ÿ˜ƒ looking at the trees swaying above and just relaxing. Monday and Tuesday were too much of a rush. Vacation should be about relaxing. ๐Ÿ’ค I really am enjoying camping ๐Ÿ• where I have no cellphone reception ๐Ÿ”• as it keeps me from constantly checking social media. ๐Ÿ“ฑ Facebook is nice but it sure is addictive.

I am thinking today of exploring the Caywood Point historic site ๐Ÿ›๏ธ and if there is a place to fish down there ๐ŸŽฃ tossing in a line. I wanted to get night crawlers ๐Ÿ› but I can get them today when I shop ๐Ÿช. I am going to leave the kayak ๐Ÿ›ถ on the truck and I might put in at the Hector Town Park where there is supposedly a boat launch and paddle around mid lake. ๐Ÿ›ฅ In the evening I’ll probably go down to Watkins Glen for ice and groceries and maybe a brief swim ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ to close out the day.

This afternoon will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 82 degrees at 3pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around August 9th. Maximum dew point of 57 at 6pm. North wind around 5 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became cloudy by afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 86 degrees. The record high of 99 was set in 1944.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:13 pm with sun having an altitude of 62.2ยฐ from the due south horizon (-8.5ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:35 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (285ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (291ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:14 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 5 seconds with dusk around 8:43 pm, which is one minute and 25 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:23 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 75 degrees. The dew point will be 59 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 14 hours and one minute of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 29 seconds over yesterday.

It looks like the party ๐ŸŽ‰ broke up this morning based on the number of cars going by so tonight I might hike down to Foster Pond and see if I can see more of the percid metroid showers ๐ŸŒ . I am thinking it might be a nice clear night for that with less humidity for better visibility. Sitting along the pond provides a good view of the stars โœจ. Hopefully the kids ๐Ÿง’ ๐Ÿง‘didn’t trash the area too much.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 62 degrees at 5am. One degree above normal. Maximum dew point of 59 at 8pm. Calm wind. In 2019, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It was sticky. It got down to 67 degrees. The record low of 43 occurred back in 1957.

Shopping ๐Ÿ›’ at Wally World the other day I couldn’t get any more paper bowls ๐Ÿฅฃ so I ended up getting Styrofoam. I always used to use Styrofoam while camping as I figured it burned better, was cheaper and didn’t involve cutting down trees ๐Ÿ”ฅ but lately I’ve been using paper products when camping because I was reading how noxious the blowing agents are for expanded polystyrene and it stinks and burns burn if you don’t have a hot fire. Paper ain’t great either – it’s plastic coated – but in some ways it’s a better. I don’t know, I use regular reusable stuff at home ๐Ÿก but camping it’s just easier and cleaner to let the fire do the dishes. Often my water supply of potable ๐Ÿšฐ water is limited. When I have my off-grid homestead with the burn barrels for unlimited trash disposal ๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ I’ll have to decide what is the right option for me – water might be precious ๐Ÿ’ฆ .

I’ve continued reading Gebe Brown’s book ๐Ÿ“™ on Regenerative Agriculture. It one part ideological but also kind of a rethinking about orthodoxy when it comes to agriculture. ๐Ÿšœ When he gets off his high horse ๐Ÿด he actually has some interesting ideas. It really makes me think when I own my off-grid property I’ll put a premium on diversity of plants ๐ŸŒฟ and wildlife and work hard to remove and burn up invasive species on my land. I have no moral quams about using glyphosate or other pesticides responsibility to manage land and I do see a lot of benefits to planting milkweed ๐Ÿฆ‹ and other native species ๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผ to bring in wildlife for hunting ๐ŸฆŒ๐Ÿฆƒ๐Ÿ‡ and observation ๐Ÿ”ญ๐Ÿ”Ž. It’s really beautiful what things were like at that farm I visited the other week for the party ๐ŸŽ‰ where they had irradicated nearly all invasives in favor of natives.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. ๐Ÿ˜• Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 80. Maximum dew point of 64 at 9am. Sunday, a chance of showers after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 77. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 60 at 6am. Typical average high for the weekend is 81 degrees.

Honestly, if the weather is going to be bad ๐ŸŒง๏ธ I’d rather it happen on the day vacation ends. It seems like a busy week at work and I’m sure things will be crazy next week once I clock in. ๐Ÿ•’ But so it goes, I have to make money ๐Ÿ’ต to have money to spend on vacation.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until National Dog Day ๐Ÿฉ when the sun will be setting at 7:51 pm with dusk at 8:20 pm. On that day in 2019, we had sunny and temperatures between 78 and 52 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 79 degrees. We hit a record high of 98 back in 1948.

Dusk on East Canada Creek

May 23, 2020 Afternoon

Good afternoon! Partly sunny and 76 degrees at the Mason Lake. There is a east breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 44 degrees. It’s not real humid but it’s hot with the sun. I think the long hair doesn’t help. At least it’s quite bug free in the tent I can wear shorts. I’d really like to get swimming and wash off some of the sweat. I’m not sure Mason Lake is very good for swimming ๐ŸŠ thought, it’s kind of mucky. Definitely not a sand lake.

I just got done with this 45 minute conference call ๐Ÿ“ž with one of my clients. It is really kind of a working trip. The one upside is the black flies aren’t bad inside the screen tent. ๐ŸŽช I did string a tarp over the east side of the tent to cool things downs bit. Somehow with the relatively low humidity I didn’t think it would be quite so hot and sticky. Maybe because there isn’t that much shade.

This afternoon will have a slight chance of showers after 3pm. Mostly sunny ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 76 degrees at 12pm. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 7th. Maximum dew point of 51 at 2pm. East wind 7 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 72 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 1964.

Later on I’m probably going kayaking on Mason Lake. ๐ŸšฃThat should be a good place to cool down for a while. The tent is nice but I kind of wish their was more shade or the black flies would be less bad an I could spend more time outside during the daylight hours. Other than that I’m going to hang back at camp, sit and read, ๐Ÿ“– and listen ๐Ÿ‘‚ to podcasts and be glad I’m not stuck at home.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:55 pm with sun having an altitude of 67.1ยฐ from the due south horizon (-2.7ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:43 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (293ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (300ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:25 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 23 seconds with dusk around 8:58 pm, which is 59 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent ๐ŸŒ’ Moon in the west-northwest (297ยฐ) at an altitude of 4ยฐ from the horizon, 243,701 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:43 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 61 degrees. The dew point will be 48 degrees. There will be a east-southeast breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 59 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 47 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 43 degrees at 4am. Seven degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 3rd. Southeast wind 5 to 8 mph. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 52 degrees. The record low of 29 occurred back in 1963.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until the First Day of Summer ๐Ÿ› when the sun will be setting at 8:42 pm in the Central Adirondacks with dusk at 9:18 pm. On that day in 2019, we had humid weather that was mostly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 79 and 66 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 79 degrees. We hit a record high of 97 back in 1953.

White Pines Along Helldiver Trail

April 18, 2020 Afternoon

Good afternoon! Cloudy with a few snow flurries and 38 degrees at the East Branch Sacandaga River Gorge. โ„ There is a north-northeast breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. There is a dusting of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ Today, normally the average high in Albany is sixty but that certainly is not the case up north. At least we only got a dusting of snow on the ground and it’s almost gone at this point. ๏ธTemperatures will drop below freezing at around 10 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

This weekend camping up at the East Branch Sacandaga River โ›บ and doing a little hiking ๐Ÿšถ and maybe fishing ๐ŸŽฃ on Sunday. As usually is pretty quiet up here although I passed a fishermen on NY 8 and a husband and wife at the falls. I’m a bit surprised, I didn’t think this trail was real popular. Still waiting on the sun โ˜€ to come out later today. Had some brief moments of sun but I kind of expected the afternoon to be half decent.

This afternoon will have a slight chance of rain and snow showers before 1pm. Partly sunny ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 43 degrees at 4pm. 17 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 14th. North wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 58 degrees. The record high of 90 was set in 1976. 2.7 inches of snow fell back in 1887.โ„

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:56 pm with sun having an altitude of 57.5ยฐ from the due south horizon (-12.4ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.8 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:05 pm with the sun in the west (280ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (286ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:44 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 3 seconds with dusk around 8:13 pm, which is one minute and 12 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:50 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 40 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 9 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 36 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 50 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 30 degrees at 1am. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 28th. West wind 6 to 9 mph. In 2019, we had light rain in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 55 degrees. The record low of 18 occurred back in 1875.

While it will rain on Sunday evening, โ˜” I don’t have any reason to rush home tomorrow as no Sunday dinner at folks house and work is just a matter of rolling out of bed and showing ๐Ÿšฟ and prepping for the Monday morning Zoom meeting. ๐Ÿ“น So I expect a lazy Sunday, going to warm and nice enough to lay in the hammock then hike to the little visited back side of Auger Falls with a fishing pole. ๐ŸŽฃ Then leave by six or so in the evening so I don’t have to drive most of the way back home in the dark.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until Average High is 70 ๐Ÿฎ when the sun will be setting at 8:16 pm with dusk at 8:49 pm. On that day in 2019, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 69 and 48 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 70 degrees. We hit a record high of 89 back in 1991.

Clouds and Landscape

March 21, 2020 Afternoon

Good afternoon! Sunny and 42 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒž There is a north-northwest breeze at 10 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 8 pm. โ˜ƒ My feelings about the afternoon – eh – not terrible for March but hardly a banner weekend. ๏ธ I think it wasn’t a bad idea to stay in town and skip camping. It’s only going to get nicer as April rolls around.

First thing this morning I went to the transfer station and got rid of all my bottles and cans. โ™ป Some of them have been sitting outside since last year and we’re kind of rusty to say the least. Guy at the transfer station was kind of funny, he opened the window briefly to ask what kind of waste I was dropping off, grabbed my two dollars ๐Ÿ’ต from the edge and quickly shut the window. I get it, he doesn’t want to get Coronavirus. Has to be a bit scary for the clerks at shopping stores. I realized that I forgot to take the extra coffee containers beyond what I need for recycling but maybe I can use it for storing stuff food or gear camping or as an alternative to a plastic bags for trash up at camp. I’m sure they’d burn just as well as the plastic bags do.

Then while I was there I went to check out the nature preserve on Collenbeck Road ๐Ÿฆ but I couldn’t find it but it was such a nice morning I decided to hike Louis Kier aka Blodgett Hill and check out the Pitch Pine. ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒIt was nice up there, I walked along the ridge line for a bit. Nice views through the trees if you leave the trail and walk the ridge. When I left there was one other truck there, had a New York Hunt Club sticker on the back glass. Great place to visit although I tell you the first part of the hike is a fairly vigorous hike. But then it moderates. I needed to get my blood pumping. Somehow working from Big Red means I’m getting less exercise.

This afternoon will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 44 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 16th. North wind around 10 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 48 degrees. The record high of 78 was set in 1921. 6 inches of snow fell back in 1905.โ„

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:03 pm with sun having an altitude of 47.9ยฐ from the due south horizon (-23ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 5.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. I noticed how short my shadow was hiking up on Blodgett Hill earlier today. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:32 pm with the sun in the west (265ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (272ยฐ) starting at 7:07 pm and lasts for 2 minutes and 54 seconds with dusk around 7:37 pm, which is one minute and 9 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:11 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 38 degrees. There will be a north-northwest breeze at 9 mph. Today will have 12 hours and 13 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 54 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 17 degrees at 5am. 11 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around February 16th. North wind around 8 mph. Kind of chilly for mid to late March but not unheard of for sure. In 2019, we had light rain. It got down to 30 degrees. The record low of 2 occurred back in 1875.

I decided to call off visiting my parents for Sunday dinner this weekend. ๐Ÿ‘ช I’ve read a lot about the risks of healthy children and even mid age children visiting older family members during the pandemic. I’ve had this low grade runny nose ๐Ÿ‘ƒ and stuffiness for about a week now. No fever or anything below my mouth ๐Ÿ‘„ but it’s not worth the risk of getting them sick. ๐Ÿ˜ท. I’m also going to call off visiting John Wolcott for the week. By next weekend it will have been more than fourteen days since I’ve been joining the millions of New Yorker in social distancing. ๐Ÿ—ป So I should be good by then and I’ve really stepped up my hand washing and keep sanitizer in my truck so it smells like a hospital. ๐Ÿฅ Probably the disinfection byproducts will kill us all.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until Average High is 60 ๐ŸŒผ when the sun will be setting at 7:41 pm with dusk at 8:10 pm. Damn, right I’m looking forward to that. On that day in 2019, we had cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 58 and 46 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 60 degrees. We hit a record high of 90 back in 1976.

South

December 31, 2019 Afternoon

Good afternoon! Cloudy and 37 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ„ Calm wind. There is a dusting of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 10 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

I am at the library for a little while uploading the pictures and content I put together, and still chewing over whether or not to spend the night in the wilderness.📶 If I do decide to camp out on New Years Eve, it will be minimal tent camping in the back country, not too far from home, hauling gear back and hot tenting it. But right now it’s so dreary, so I’m hardly in a rush to get outside.🤔

I’ll head home in a while and then decide on my plans. I’m not planning on going too far โ›บ and it’s just one night out so not a lot of stuff. It certainty would be fun to get away one last time this year and wake up to a new decade. 🎇 It will 2020 come tomorrow morning even we did have some bad weather over the past few days canceling our my Finger Lakes trip.

This afternoon will have a slight chance of rain and snow showers before 1pm, then a chance of rain showers. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a high of 38 degrees at 1pm. Six degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 10th. Southwest wind 3 to 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. That’s one concern about taking a trip today. Yesterday when I wanted to go down to the library we had an ice storm – I wouldn’t want to have that happen while I’m out on the road. Although I’m not going that far. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light drizzle by afternoon. The high last year was 41 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 1895. 7.9 inches of snow fell back in 2007.โ„

Solar noon 🌞 was at 11:59 am with sun having an altitude of 24.3ยฐ from the due south horizon (-46.5ยฐ vs. 6/21). Yes, the sun is pretty weak this time of year compared to summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 3:46 pm with the sun in the southwest (231ยฐ). Hopefully it will be a very nice afternoon. But now it’s so damp and dreary. Photographers like the golden hour — which occurs twice a day when the land looks particularly red on a nice day due to atmosphere — because it’s a great time for photography. 📸 The sunset is in the west-southwest (239ยฐ) starting at 4:28 pm and lasts for 3 minutes and 24 seconds with dusk around 5:03 pm, which is 49 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 5:39 pm. At sunset, look for rain or snow showers 🌧 and temperatures around 38 degrees. There will be a southwest breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 6 minutes of daytime, an increase of 40 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of snow showers, mainly before 1am. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 28 degrees at 6am. 12 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 29th. West wind 5 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. In 2018, we had light rain in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 27 degrees. The record low of -18 occurred back in 1970.

Not a particularly nice weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ™ Saturday, showers likely, mainly after 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 47. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Sunday, a chance of rain and snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 35. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Typical average high for the weekend is 31 degrees.

I’m not planning on going anywhere this weekend, 🌲because I have a Save the Pine Bush meeting on Sunday and I’ll probably go out for a hike at the Pine Bush before. Plus I have to save money 💵 so I can have money for camping come the summer when the nights are long and I can lay back in the hammock. 😴

🌹🌻🌼Only 79 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!🌹🌻🌼

Geese

December 28, 2019 Afternoon

Good evening! Mostly clear and 33 degrees at Moscow Hill Camping Area in Brookfield. Calm wind as we are tucked down in the valley. Smoke is going straight up from the fire. Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 7 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Beautiful evening, mild for late December but the ground is still fairly frozen. โ›บ That said I’m sure these campsites have a thick pack of gravel because they’re trampled by horses 🐴 and heavy horse trailers and diesel pickup trucks all summer long. These sites have those nice little pavilions that the DEC has at a number of state forests in Central and Western New York. 🏡 They’re perfect for handing up lights and cooking and preparing food under. 🍲 I wish they had them up at Cherry Ridge 🍒 but only at the horse camp 🐴.

I was originally planning on going up to Cherry Ridge 🍒 but the road was icy as it’s plowed but not sanded or salted beyond the seasonal use only. I probably would have been fine going up it but there is that one steep section towards the top so I decided against it in favor of Moscow Hill horse camp. 🐴 The riding season is done for the year and while it’s right off of the county highway, there is very little traffic nearby, certainly far less than NY 8. I think I made a good choice camping here and I forgot how nice the pavilions are. Plus being only fifteen minutes away from Shurburne it made for a nice drive down there to visit the Rogers Environmental Education Center. 🐸 No cellphone here but I kind of enjoy the solitude. 📱

Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a low of 26 degrees at 4am. Nine degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 4th. Light and variable wind. In 2018, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 26 degrees. The record low of -18 occurred back in 1933.

Madison County certainly is a brown and gray as I noted earlier. But that’s winter and that how the land is. So many neat old farm houses and real rough cut farms that are super muddy after it being relatively mild. 🐮 Lots of run down trailers, modular homes and even a few shed to homes. Not too many off grinders although I bet in the future – especially with new homes you’ll see more of that, especially on dirt roads without electric lines. 🔌

While I didn’t grow up in a trailer or a farm 🚜 I’ve always loved the gritty rural life. 😍 The piles of junk and manure. 🔧 The goats 🐐 tied to the tree, the homesteaders processing their own deer and hogs 🐖. They call it poverty or ignorant rednecks but those people are a lot smarter and privledged than I. Someday I’ll own an off grid cabin 🏡 and do a little homesteading myself but I’ll never be a true country boy  like those who were raised the life in a place like Southern Madison County. Sure, a lot of my neighbors growing up raised pigs and cows, llved in trailers or modular homes and even burned their own trash 🔥 but I grew up in an ordinary house in the country to college educated 🎓 parents. They had goats and chickens 🐔 buy were no means real country boys.

Tonight will have a with 15% illuminated with the moon setting at 6:57 pm. It is definitely a pretty beautiful little moon. The is on Wednesday night with mostly cloudy skies. The is on Wednesday night. The sun will rise at 7:31 am with the first light at 6:59 am, which is 16 seconds later than yesterday. 🌄 Tonight will have 14 hours and 56 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 29 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will rain likely, mainly after 4pm. Cloudy 🌧, with a high of 37 degrees at 1pm. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 13th. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 50 degrees. The record high of 71 was set in 1984. 6 inches of snow fell back in 1915.โ„

Tomorrow morning I’m taking down camp โ›บ and heading to Glimmerglass State Park before the rain โ˜”. As it is a fairly mild night, 🌃 I decided to not bother with the tent – I’ll be plenty warm once I get snuggled under the covers in my truck bed. I do like the warmth of the hot tent but it is a lot more work to set up and take down. If I were staying multiple nights or if it was colder I’d definitely had considered the tent.

In four weeks on January 25 the sun will be setting at 5:05 pm,🌄 which is 29 minutes and 57 seconds later then today. In 2019 on that day, we had partly sunny, snow showers and temperatures between 35 and 15 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 31 and 14 degrees. The record high of 61 degrees was set back in 1938.

Looking ahead, Winnie the Pooh Day 🍯 is in 3 weeks, 5 PM Sunset 🌆 is in 4 weeks, February 🌧 is in 5 weeks, Average High is 50 🌸 is in 3 months, Average High is 60 🌼 is in 16 weeks, Average High is 70 🐮 is in 20 weeks, Memorial Day Weekend Starts 🏕๏ธ is in 21 weeks, and Summer ๏ธโ›ฑ๏ธ is in 25 weeks.

Open Area [Expires March 9 2024]

August 10, 2019 Afternoon

Good afternoon! Clouds, a few sprinkles and a little sun and 60 degrees here on the Hunter Mountain overlook of the West Kill Valley. ๐ŸŒฆ There is a west-northwest breeze at 15 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 49 degrees. The skies will clear around 4 pm. I’m waiting for it, hoping to get better pictures and videos. ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

This afternoon will have a slight chance of showers. Partly sunny ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 60 degrees at 2pm. 21 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 15th. Maximum dew point of 49 at 2pm. Northwest wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was humid. The high last year was 82 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1949.

I decided today to hike up to Hunter Mountain along the West Kill trail. ๐Ÿšถ Later on I plan to see Pratts Rocks in Prattsville and then head up to Burnt Rossman. โ›บ Tomorrow I’ll do some fishing ๐ŸŽฃ in Looking Glass Pond and hit up the farm stands in the Schoharie Valley and then swim ๐ŸŠ in Mine Kill State Park.

I fully admit if I was a responsible adult I would have gone to the Save the Pine Bush organizational meeting ๐ŸŒฒand stayed in town to save gas on my limited budget. But summer is rapidly fading away and I wanted to get out of town before its done and I’m sure rainy weekends aren’t that far off. โ˜” I don’t feel that guilty though, I’ve spent more time on that map and researching things over the past few weeks than anything else I’ve been doing.

Driving through Greenville and stopping at the grocery store ๐Ÿฌ I had forgotten what a hick town I grew up in. Fun place although I don’t know if I’d ever want to go back now with all the gun restrictions ๐Ÿ”ซ and regulations today on open burning ๐Ÿ”ฅ – and I was surprised how expensive things were at the store. But then again in Albany I mostly shop for things on sale at Walmart. I do like the small towns and spend most of my vacation time there but its still cultural shock to go back to the community I haven’t been in regularly for going on two decades now. I’ve worked in other hick towns but the hometown is strange. The girls at the grocery store with their Irish red hair are very cute. ๐Ÿ˜ But as I like to say, their husbands own more guns than me. Fit in well with my big jacked up truck ๐Ÿšš though. That said, I can’t see moving back to the country until I can live in a place where I can have fires and burn whatever I want on my own land. ๐Ÿšœ More on that later.

I forgot how popular the Catskills are these days ๐Ÿ—ป but they sure are beautiful. I should do some more Catskill peaks this fall, maybe truck cap camping in Schoharie or just do day trips. I’ve been taking a lot of pictures but mostly on my 35mm camera ๐Ÿ“ท so it will have to wait for posting until Sunday or Monday. I’m also making a ton of videos. Fortunately, despite hitting a lot of traffic around the fire tower ๐Ÿ—ผ the ledge I’m on is relatively quiet and has nice views when you peer over the tree line. ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒSun is coming out โ˜€ and I’m lazy so I’m procrastinating a bit but I should hurry up so I also have time to see Pratts Rocks.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Average High Falls To 79 ๏ธDegrees โ›ฑ๏ธ๏ธ๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 7:43 pm with dusk at 8:12 pm. On that day in 2018, we had sunny and temperatures between 85 and 57 degrees. ๐ŸŒป We hit a record high of 95 back in 1947.
