I thought about going for a early morning bike ride 🚲 👉 🚶

But changed my mind in favor of going in on the early bus and walking laps on the Plaza. I’ve been having a lot of trouble this winter with cold numb hands when I go out walking and riding this year. Maybe I need heavier gloves but it’s not pleasant to get home have sore fingers and struggle to unlock and open the door.

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Cloudy and 17 degrees in Delmar. ☁ Calm wind. Still a cold morning. There are 3 inches of snow on the ground. ☃ ️Things will start to thaw out next Tuesday around 8 am. 🌡️This weekend is going to ducking 🦆 cold.

Breakfast was onions, canned green beans, canned 🥫 tomatoes and eggs 🥚. It’s what I had and with some spices it was pretty good. My pantry is completely void of fruit 🍌 after today’s lunch and the vegetables aren’t much more plentiful unless you count the canned stuff I primarily have for camping. 🛒 I plan to go shopping tomorrow, though a lot depends on whether I’m getting filmed 📼 for the Rezsin Adams documentary tomorrow.

Wanted to catch the earliest express downtown 🚍 but I ended up catching the second express downtown after walking down to the Park and Ride. 🚶 I want to try to get in at least 7,000 steps 👣 before settling in my office this morning. I’m a bit concerned about how sore and numb my hands 👐 get from the cold now ❄ but I realize I’m getting older, my body is wearing out and frankly I probably need better gloves 🧤. The Plaza will be nice to walk inside.

Today will have a chance of snow showers, mainly after 11am. Cloudy 🌦, with a high of 22 degrees at 12pm. 10 degrees below normal. Calm wind becoming north 5 to 9 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 39 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 1929. 8.5 inches of snow fell back in 1886.❄

All week I’ve been dealing with not only cold fingers but also anxiety 🥶 as it’s been a tough adjustment to all that is new in my life. Its just such a different experience working out in a suburban office environment, much more of a corporate office culture with less opportunities for creativity. It’s tough learning all the new faces, 👥 the culture and the technical nature of the work. ⚙ I’m doing good I guess though I wish I had known the VIM editor better which is so much a big part of my new position. Fortunately I’m pretty good at most of the other parts of the job like the bash shell, SQL, data tidying. 🖥

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:07 pm with sun having an altitude of 27° from the due south horizon (-43.9° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 11.8 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 4:08 pm with the sun in the southwest (235°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-southwest (243°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:52 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 16 seconds with dusk around 5:22 pm, which is one minute and 13 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous 🌔 Moon in the southeast (125°) at an altitude of 58° from the horizon, 233,485 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 5:57 pm. At sunset, look for snow 🌨 and temperatures around 22 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 8 mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 35 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 51 seconds over today.

Last night 🌃 I made it up until almost 9 pm last night, as I went for an evening walk 🚶 and then laid in bed 🛏 for a while listening to a podcast 🎧 about the rise of homeschooling in America. 🏫🚸 I think it was NPR Fresh Air. But I can’t blame parents when most schools these days are Confined Education Operations Systems (CEOs), designed primarily to waste taxpayer dollars 💵 and prepare the youth of tomorrow for working in acre sized bull pens next to 5 acres of parking off of the freeway interchange in the suburbs. 🛣️

Tonight will be really cold. That’s relatively speaking. We will have a slight chance of snow showers before 11pm. Cloudy 🌧, with a low of 9 degrees at 6am. Six degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around -4 at 5am; Northwest wind 7 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2023, we had light rain. It got down to 32 degrees. The record low of -22 occurred back in 1970.

This evening I think I will go down to the library 📚 pick up the damaged books that I reimbursed the library for and work on my laptop for a while. It is a good way to get some steps in and then head to bed relatively early. 😴 Tomorrow is going to be cold, but I will make the best of it.

I’ve been quite impressed how smoothly the transfer has been between the shuttle and the express bus. 🚌 🔛 🚐 There is a only a few minutes between the buses but so far I’ve always made the transfer without issue, plus there is a warm place to wait in the Concourse bus station. Works out much better then I expect. 😀 My commute remains the same as before time wise, about 40 minutes, leaving and getting home at the same time, without the late nights. The drive in would be 20 minutes, but that doesn’t include time cleaning off snow and ice, warming the truck up or parking. So really taking the bus is a win-win.

Tomorrow will have a chance of snow showers, mainly after 4pm. Cloudy 🌦, with a high of 17 degrees at 1pm. 15 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around -6 at 6am; Northwest wind 11 to 17 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Little or no snow accumulation expected. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 38 degrees. The record high of 53 was set in 2006. 10.4 inches of snow fell back in 2019.❄

Looking ahead to Sunday, sunny and cold, with a high near 23. ☀ Northwest wind around 15 mph. Typical average high for the weekend is 32 degrees. Probably going out to see the folks then, 👪 and maybe do a hike earlier in the day, if I bundle up. But with my problem with my fingers getting cold, this seems less fun then in years past.

When there is no hope, there are 2 weeks until Ground Hog Day 🐻 when the sun will be setting at 5:10 pm with dusk at 5:39 pm. I bet he will see his shadow. On that day in 2023, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 36 and 19 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 33 degrees. We hit a record high of 53 back in 1981.

The day before my Christmas Week Trip 🎅 ⛺

Up at five o’clock, frying onions and eggs and spinach, a good breakfast before sitting down and doing more study of neural networks and machine learning. Early to rise makes a man, healthy, wealthy and wise, or so I tell myself.

Good morning! What day is it? Work from Home Day, of course. Sunny and 25 degrees in Delmar, NY. 🌞 There is a north-northwest breeze at 9 mph. 🍃. Things will start to thaw out at around 9 am. 🌡️

Out for a morning bike ride 🚲 to Voorheesville to burn some calories before heading home and settling down to work. 💻 Depending on the projects that come in for review I’ll work down at the library or in my truck. Lunch time I want to get to Tractor Supply to refill my propane tank 🏮 and get a few supplies for camping 🏕 so I can get an early start come Thursday. I’ll set up camp, do some hiking and then Friday I plan to ride more of the Erie Canalway from Canastota to Rome.

Today will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 40 degrees at 1pm. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 11th. Northwest wind 7 to 10 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 32 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 1957. 8.4 inches of snow fell back in 1975.❄

Should be a nice day though that breeze will make it cold. 🌬 But I’ll bundle up for my morning ride, this time out to Voorheesville, then when I’m working remotely from my truck at the library, I’ll have the solar gain of the windshield to stay warm or I can work from inside the library if it’s quiet enough and I don’t end up taking many calls. ☎️ I’ll see. Then I’m hoping if I have some downtime at work I can run home and do some packing and getting ready for the trip. Should be a nice weekend, but maybe cold a times.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 11:54 am with sun having an altitude of 24° from the due south horizon (-46.9° vs. 6/21). At sunset, look for mostly sunny skies 🌃 and temperatures around 38 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 10 mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 6 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 4 seconds over today.

I am very happy with that new photo-electric smoke detector. 👨‍🚒 This morning I accidentally got a frying pan a bit hot when cooking down the onions, and no alarm. 🧅 That made me quite happy and I am sure my neighbor too not having a fire alarm at 5:30 AM. Breakfast still came out quite good, and I cleaned up my kitchen a bit. Soup I’m planning on for lunch.

Tonight will have increasing clouds ☁, with a low of 25 degrees at 6am. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 9th. North wind 9 to 11 mph. In 2022, we had clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 16 degrees. The record low of -18 occurred back in 1942.

Today a train moved very fast in America — that is relatively speaking. 🚉 In 1967, a Pennsylvania Railroad Budd Metroliner exceeds 155 mph on their New York Division, now Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor. It was a test mission, but the high speed rail wasn’t to be due to frequent break downs and bottlenecks along the Northeast Corridor and the soon to be bankrupt Pennsylvania Railroad not long to be kept afloat by government funds and soon to offload passenger service to the government in the form of Amtrak. 🛤️ I don’t think even the latest high speed rail experiments have gotten that fast in recent years in America though slowly but surely the Northeast Corridor between New York City and Washington DC has gotten faster. 🚄

Weekend is starting to look cloudier but mild. 🌥 Thursday – Sunny, with a high near 34. North wind 10 to 13 mph. Friday – Sunny, with a high near 33. North wind 3 to 5 mph. Saturday – Mostly cloudy, with a high near 38.  Sunday – Partly sunny, with a high near 41. Christmas Day – Partly sunny, with a high near 44. Still not terrible weather for winter camping, and it doesn’t look like I’ll have much snow to deal with out in Madison County. Typical average high for the weekend is 36 degrees.

A Second Try At The State Tree

Happy Tea Party Day 🐍

The day when they dump source separated organic waste in the Boston Harbor, obviously pissing off the marine fisheries bureau and the Brits before that famous call in Revere.

Good morning! Partly sunny and 47 degrees in Delmar. Not bad for Delmar at all in December. There is a north breeze at 6 mph. 🍃. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Tuesday around 4 pm. ☃️

Got up at five o’clock to start cooking black beans and pancakes 🥞. The pancakes were good the black beans are still cooking. 🧑🏻‍🍳 After getting up early 🛏 I’m now moving slowly, continuing to study machine learning videos on Udemy while I wait for the beans to cook. Also need to get the hub caps back on my truck and check the lug nuts for tightness. 🛠

Today will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 51 degrees at 2pm. 13 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 12th. North wind around 6 mph. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning, which became light snow by afternoon. The high last year was 35 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 2021. 9.5 inches of snow fell back in 1981.❄

Today’s plan is to ride down to French Mills which I’ve seen photographed many times 🏞 but never visited. If time allows I might go to the Albany Pine Bush Preserve to ride trail there. 🚲 I’m just looking for new places close enough I can safely ride to and don’t have to necessarily drive to.

Today in 1965, the Vietnam War would escalate. 🪖General William Westmoreland sends U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara a request for 243,000 more men by the end of 1966. And in Cleveland, Ohio becomes the first major American city to default on its financial obligations since the Great Depression.

Looking ahead, next Saturday is Festivus 🍖 when the sun will be setting at 4:27 pm with dusk at 4:57 pm. On that day in 2022, we had rain and temperatures between 53 and 9 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 36 degrees. We hit a record high of 64 back in 1990.

Research Pond No. 3

Made it to the weekend, today should be nice, tomorrow who knows 🤷‍♂️

Maybe nice is an exaggeration but it will be mild by mid December standards but fairly cloudy. I think it will be a good day to ride and stay close to home, at least not drive anywhere. Tomorrow I can shop I figure before going out to the folks house in the driving rain.

Good morning! Mostly cloudy and 40 degrees in Delmar. ☁ There is a south-southeast breeze at 7 mph. 🍃. There is a inch of snow on the ground. ☃ ️Temperatures will drop below freezing at Monday around 10 pm. ☃️

Made a nice breakfast cake up with oatmeal, cranberries, bananas and pineapple 🍍. Drank a lot of coffee ☕ but I’m good as I’m not planning an ambitious day though later on as it warms up I’m thinking about a bike 🚲 ride out to Voorheesville and maybe later on to French’s Mills or Altamont. There is a lot of places I haven’t explored on my bicycle around and even some local preserves that I can’t be bothered to drive to but are within biking range.

Today will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a high of 49 degrees at 3pm. Nine degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 17th. South wind 7 to 14 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with sunny skies in the afternoon. The high last year was 39 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 1966. 7.3 inches of snow fell back in 2009.❄

I won’t say it will be a banner weekend ☔ especially as the rain comes tomorrow but I’ll make the best of it. I decided against the Salvation Army this weekend, it’s a bit of a drive and I am okay 👌 on clothes truth be told and I don’t love riding the sand trails in the Pine Bush that much. 🌲🌲 I kind of want to get to Indian Ladder Farms for some apples 🍏. I’d prefer Altamont Orchards but that’s a pretty long bike ride. Maybe I’ll just wait to I get groceries tomorrow. 🖥 Kind of want to get to the library to use the Wi-Fi too this afternoon. 📶

Solar noon 🌞 is at 11:49 am with sun having an altitude of 24.6° from the due south horizon (-46.2° vs. 6/21). Finally finished that course on Categorizing and Classification of Data Using Machine Learning in R. 🤖 OK course, but I’ve wish they explained the pros and cons of the different methods better but I’ve previously read up on that. 🧑‍🏫 I’ll probably eventually study a Python course on the same topic but first I’m studying Artificial Neural Networks for Business Managers in R Studio. I can’t complain too much, all these classes are free with my Bethlehem Public Library card 📚 unlike many who pay for them. I doubt the instruction quality, at least of this last class would be something I’d pay for. But I still learned how to do a lot of it in R that I previously only knew concepts but not the R packages and code to implement.

Maybe I should cut back on the turmeric. That 6.2 oz bottle I bought last Sunday is third eaten already. 🧂 My teeth could yellow and folks think I’m a smoker, lol. That said I shouldn’t have to worry much about tooth plaque or gingivitis. 🦷I just like my food yellow and tasty plus I never have any aches anymore despite climbing all the those stairs and riding all those miles. There are days when every meal 🍴 involves tumeric starting with the fried onions and eggs 🍳 in the morning.

Tonight will have a slight chance of rain after 4am. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 40 degrees at 2am. 16 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 20th. South wind 8 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2022, we had clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 20 degrees. The record low of -4 occurred back in 1902.

Trying to keep costs down this weekend as after my credit card 💳 bill is paid I’ll only have $350 left in my bank account to tide my over until I get paid the following work week. 💸 Heck of it is looking at my second to last paystub of the year I made more then I expected? So much money is going out the door 🚪 to retirement and investing plus inflation keeps taking a bigger chunk each time I shop for groceries. 🏪 I’m hopeful with my new job next year I’ll make a little more money but with inflation that doesn’t go the way it once would have. I think 🤔 I’ll do good work in the new job despite my fear 😱 of messing up 💣 and the inconvenience of transferring buses 🚍 to get there days I can’t mountain bike it. Plus I’m making like $75 a month in ad revenue on the blog.

Today in 1958, the John Birch Society is founded. Businessman and founder Robert W. Welch Jr. (1899–1985) developed an organizational infrastructure in 1958 of chapters nationwide. 🍬 After an early rise in membership and influence,🥸 efforts by those such as conservative William F. Buckley Jr. and National Review led the JBS to be identified as a fringe element of the conservative movement, 🪰 mostly in fear of the radicalization of the American right. 😵‍💫

Looking ahead, next Saturday is Tea Party Day 🐍 when the sun will be setting at 4:24 pm with dusk at 4:54 pm. On that day in 2022, we had snow and temperatures between 35 and 33 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 38 degrees. We hit a record high of 61 back in 2021. Never got into drinking much tea 🍵. I do like my warm glass of milk before bed 🛏 on a cold night with some vanilla, ginger and lots of cinnamon though.

Under the Agency Building

Getting vaxxed this evening 💉

I fully expect to be declared Democrat of the year for getting the shots (flu and COVID boosters), have a fireworks display in my honor and a highway overpass renamed in my honor. And I’ll be such a patriotic American and Biden supporter helping the geriatrics and mentally retarded immune suppressed children not die. Heck I might even vote for Bobby Kennedy Jr for President. But mostly because it doesn’t seem like much fun to get the flu or the COVID after all these years. I’m selfish son of a bitch and I’m even going to pharmacy to get my shots that is subject to a labor strike, mostly because I didn’t know when I made my appointment.

Good morning! Happy Cold Start to the Thursday. Free battery 🔋 test day coming to a driveway near you. I fully charged up the lights on my bike this morning. Mostly clear and 26 degrees in Delmar, NY. 🌅 Calm wind. Things will start to thaw out at around 8 am. 🌡️First freezing day of the year for Albany though it was colder then that first morning I was in the High Country of West Virginia. Definitely wearing gloves 🧤 when I ride to work this morning.

Today will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 48 degrees at 3pm. Seven degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 18th. Calm wind becoming southwest 5 to 7 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 67 degrees. The record high of 82 was set in 1950. 0.1 inches of snow fell back in 1911.❄ They got more than that in the High Country of West Virginia last night.

Biking to work and home again today. 🚲 Really today and tomorrow are the last real opportunities to do this with the time change 🌇 come Sunday. 🧤 I’ll probably continue next week to ride to work on nice days but will be busing it home in the evenings. 🚍 Not riding through the South End or the unlit bike trail after dark. Or local streets with all the traffic. 🚘 Wearing the gloves yesterday definitely helped on the ride as it’s getting cold out.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:40 pm with sun having an altitude of 32.7° from the due south horizon (-38.1° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 9.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 5:08 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (244°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-southwest (251°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 5:49 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 5 seconds with dusk around 6:16 pm, which is one minute and 18 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 6:51 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 46 degrees. There will be a south-southwest breeze at 6 mph. Tomorrow will have 10 hours and 17 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 30 seconds over today.

So the big thing today is getting my shots 💉 after work. I’ll probably have a sore arm 💪🏻 after it and might even feel a little sick 🩹 but I figure it beats the alternative of the COVID or flu which I’ve heard from others really sucks. I should be able to walk there 🚶 which is one of the reasons I’m not canceling with the labor strike 🤜 but also because they have it in stock and not all pharmacies do ⚕. I’ll let you know tomorrow if I catch autism from the vaccines, and start pounding my chest with a steak knife 🗡 or better yet, go crazy 🤪 and donate $1,000 to Sandy Hook Promise. I might not speak right, but I know what I’m talking about.

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌃 , with a low of 29 degrees at 5am. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 23rd. South wind 3 to 5 mph. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 35 degrees. The record low of 20 occurred back in 1980.

Fresh bread 🍞 and 15 pea soup today has been cooked. 🍲 It will be lunch and dinner. Soup has carrots and beans, somehow I forgot onions but it tastes good. 😋 Last night I also made a soup, 🥣 that was a tuna fish soup with whole wheat pasta, carrots, onions and obviously tuna fish. 🐠 Surprisingly delicious!

The weekend has improved somewhat but I’m still on the fence about heading out of town. 🤺 Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 57. Southwest wind around 5 mph. Set your clock 🕒 back one hour or else you’ll be an hour early to church ⛪ shivering your ass off staring at that steeple like a sheeple 🐑 come Sunday which will be mostly cloudy, with a high near 57. Typical average high for the weekend is 54 degrees.

Looking towards turkey day, there are 3 weeks until Thanksgiving 🦃 when the sun will be setting at 4:28 pm with dusk at 4:57 pm (Standard Time). On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 49 and 24 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 46 degrees. We hit a record high of 72 back in 1931.

Allegheny Reservoir from Jakes Rocks Overlook

They’re taking about frost in the North Country this morning 🍂

You can taste the fresh silage on the air and you know it won’t be long before the leaves will be full of color in the North Country. Up at five o’clock cooking down split pea soup to have with homemade bread.

Good morning! Happy Thursday. A cold start, you might need the choke on your motor. Mostly clear, the sun is rising and 47 degrees in Delmar, NY. 🌅 Calm wind.

Up a little after five to cook 🍳 and get started on my day. Needed to run to the rest room and then I needed to have coffee ☕ and get that pea soup cooking down. A half pound of spinach, onions, stir fry vegetables, a crust of whole wheat flour and water plus two eggs, a bit of milk and corn starch topped with a bit of Parmesan was breakfast. Dinner last night was pizza 🍕 but not that American crap way. A simple whole wheat flour and water crust, several paste and other tomatoes that were starting to mold a bit run through the food processor with a garlic clove and a bunch of spices with flour to harden, topped with chopped onions and spinach and a bit of Parmesan. 🥦 I do eat a lot of spinach, I like fiber. Fills your stomach up fully without many calories.

Lately I’ve been a been a little nostalgic 🎶 and listening to a lot of country music from the early 2000s like back in college. Not that I’d ever want to go back to those days with all those trials and tribulations of youth and far less money but life was good before inflation kind of ruined everything. I think it’s September 11th and just the autumn weather that takes me back to the first year back at Hudson Valley Community College, my first experience with much urban life, and being on my own, having a car, being able to go up to the woods whenever I wanted to. 🎄

Out walking around 6:45 AM this morning. 🚶‍♀️ Definitely a beautiful morning for the walk, should be a great ride down through the gorge to work. 🚲 I tasted some of that pea soup, it’s delicious, I’ll bring some for work and probably have some more for dinner. Might end up freezing the rest so I can have it later in the weekend, obviously with some fresh bread. 🍵 Might be a good way to end Saturday after riding trail most of the day up at Thacher Park. 🚵‍♀️ I am starting to run low on bananas, 🍌 I might stop and get just them at Hannaford during the evening commute home. Other then that my pantry is pretty solid.

Today will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 70 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 26th. Maximum dew point of 50 at 6pm. Calm wind becoming north around 6 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 76 degrees. The record high of 95 was set in 1895.

I called the General yesterday 🚚 and guess what I’m on call back list regarding when they can do the passenger airbag inflator recall work. I figured with all the notices and social media ads I’ve gotten about replacing the airbag inflator, they’d have a ton in stock at this point and I could just drop the truck off in a week or two and have it back the next day. Nope, they took down my information but couldn’t promise me an appointment at this time.

Called back the doctor, 📞 and after a bit of phone tag 👩‍⚕️ they want to do some more testing about my pissing problem.  Didn’t catch it right away, as my phone is set up to automatically go to voice mail. 📨 Heck of it is since I’ve not been eating so many zucchini and overnight oatmeal, I’ve not had such a pissing problem.🚽  I kind of don’t want to spend more money getting tests, as I think it’s mostly in my head at this point, to blame on my diet, but they said some of the initial rounds of test were inclusive. 📋They can’t schedule me until another two weeks, so at that point I’ll re-evaluate if I find myself needing to piss too much. I really think the key is stay away from coffee and overnight oatmeal before road trips, especially my October trip if I’m thinking West Virginia.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:49 pm with sun having an altitude of 48.2° from the due south horizon (-22.7° vs. 6/21). Today will have 12 hours and 16 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over yesterday.

Yesterday, I went for an evening walk 🚶‍♀️ and went through my dresser and pulled out most the XXL clothes and put them away in the crawl space, and started to go through the hand-me-downs I got from the late John W. Some are XXL unfortunately, I only meant to get XL but I’ll try them on. 👕 Going to wash them though before putting them with the other clothes, as some of them have a bit of an old man smell to them. The pizza I had was good 🍕, very filling, didn’t really need a desert. Lights were out before 8:15 PM though I did listen to a podcast or two on my phone before getting fully asleep but that’s fine, I’m usually up by 5 AM most mornings to start cooking and getting a jump start on my morning.

Totally getting sold on going down to Canaan Heights West Virginia sometime after Columbus Day Weekend 🍂 to mountain bike, hike, camp and see the sights. I mean I’m not 100% on this and it could change, but it would be fun. Probably start the week up Wellsboro PA-area to ride some of the Pine Creek Gorge Trail. Not sure how much farther south I’d go in West Viriginia, maybe Dolly Sods, but I would rather focus on Canaan Heights, Blackwater Falls State Park and the Canaan Wildlife Refuge as I haven’t spent nearly enough time up that way.

Tonight will be mostly clear 🌃, with a low of 46 degrees at 6am. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 1st. Light northwest wind. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 51 degrees. The record low of 31 occurred back in 1962.

I’ve been starting to look more deeply into the future of the blog. 📝 I can bitch about the cost of running it but it won’t make it go away. I kind of would miss not doing it, so it’s probably worth the money to me. I do want to re-work the data structure, make things more efficient and maybe remove more of the custom code and try to make it use as much of built-in WordPress code as possible. 👨‍💻 I could bring my laptop home and work on this over the weekend, especially if it’s going to be rainy. The big difficulty might be the transition — taking down the old data structure and replacing it with the new one, and getting all the URL rewrites perfected before going live. I don’t know any way to do this completely without taking at least part of the blog offline to do the change over. 🤷‍♂️ I might also look at implementing Google AdSense, so I can get some advertising revenue, to cover the costs of doing the blog. I don’t love that idea — there is too much advertising pollution already, but I get tired of ever inflating costs, even if it really is a smaller part of the budget that that I’m making more money at work. 💸

A chance of showers throughout the weekend with more sun on Sunday. 🌦 Saturday, a chance of showers, mainly after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 66. East wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. Maximum dew point of 52 at 10am. Sunday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 68. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 56 at 1pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 72 degrees.

I won’t say it’s a banner weekend this weekend, 🌦 but maybe not a wash out. Still will be good enough to do the Nature Bus to Thacher Park. Saves some money and it’s a fun day, plus I went out camping last weekend. 🏕 Maybe next weekend I’ll get out again, though the very long-range forecast doesn’t look all that great in all honestly. Columbus Day Weekend, which is two weeks from Saturday might be better. ⛵ 🍂 Only time will tell, though it seems like autumn will be late this year.

South Along Lake George

Second half of August 🎪

So it would seem as time marches on so quickly. Altamont Fair is underway. Tomorrow it’s off to the Adirondacks and it should be a nice day and hopefully Friday won’t be too cold and wet. Got some books to read on Friday, I’ll toss in the heater in case I want to warm my hands.

Good morning! What day is it? A a happy Pseudo Friday for Me Day, of course. Rain and 65 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☔ There is a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 63 degrees. The skies will clear around 3 pm.

Out walking 🚶 this morning, red kidney beans cooking down on the stove 🍲 to enjoy with maple syrup up at camp this weekend. Thinking cold black coffee ☕ this morning, cream of wheat with chia seeds, yogurt, lemon 🍋 maybe a touch of stevia and some cherries 🍒 to get the day started. And maybe some of the red beans with maple syrup for protein. Save the rest for camp. 🏕

Today will have patchy drizzle with a chance of showers before 10am, then a chance of showers between 10am and 2pm. Mostly cloudy 🌦, with a high of 79 degrees at 4pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 1st. Maximum dew point of 69 at 2pm. South wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. I’m on the fence about taking Blackie 🚵 to work today. I don’t think it’s going to rain but there is always the chance. On the other hand, I kind of like taking my bike to work, doesn’t add much time but it’s free exercise especially the ride back home 🏡 and saves on the bus 🚍 fare. Food Festival is today, so I’ll have to take Howard rather than ride across the Plaza at the end of the day and they’re a risk of thunderstorm ⛈. Time wise it doesn’t make much difference, but I also don’t want to be too tired when I get packed tonight. Plan is to leave by around 8 AM or so tomorrow, though not too early as I’m not sure when Samdill Farm Stand opens, though I want to hit that on the way up. 🌽 🥦

Solar noon 🌞 is at 1:01 pm with sun having an altitude of 61.2° from the due south horizon (-9.6° vs. 6/21). At sunset, look for partly clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 77 degrees. The dew point will be 67 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 55 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 33 seconds over yesterday.

In 2022, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It became somewhat humid as the night progressed. It got down to 62 degrees. The record low of 40 occurred back in 1979.

Tomorrow looks beautiful with only a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 4pm, as it’s summer. ☀️ Partly sunny, with a high near 81. South wind 5 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. Then Thursday night it turns wetter with showers and thunderstorms likely. Hopefully late enough, it won’t impact my evening. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 66. Southeast wind 6 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Plan is to leave early 🌅 hopefully around 8 AM or 9 AM, then head north with the first stop to top off my tank in Rotterdam, then Sandil’s Farm in Tribes Hill for veggies 🥦 🌽 then to Walmart in Johnstown for a few groceries and supplies 🛒, then maybe Rogers Orchards 🍎 for fresh apples, then up hopefully to the House Pond Campsite. By noontime, I want to get camp set up 🏕 , inflate the tube, and get floating in the East Branch, as it might be the warmest day. Then in the evening, ride up to Potholers and cool off in the Potholers. 📻 I’ve downloaded several podcasts and Youtube videos to listen to while up at camp.

Come Friday, it’s a bit of a wet start. 🌧 Showers and thunderstorms likely before 2pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 2pm and 5pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 78. Southwest wind 6 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. Maybe not a washout. I got from “Salt, fat, acid, heat : mastering the elements of good cooking” by Samin Nosrat from the library 📚 and plan on reading it on Friday morning. ♨ I think I will pack the heater, so I can warm up next to it in case it’s cold. Also going to pack the screen tent, 🎪 as it’s been such a wet summer and I’m thinking it could be buggy. 🐜 By evening it shouldn’t be too bad, might go for a nice ride on Blackie 🚲 along Piseco-Powley Road with the headlight as I get back late, as sunset is around 8 PM. Maybe too cold to swim, but who knows. 🌆

A picture perfect weekend after we get past Friday on tap. 😎 Cool but sunny. Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 74. Maximum dew point of 56 at 1pm. Sunday, sunny, with a high near 84. Maximum dew point of 64 at 7pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 82 degrees. I am thinking I want to ride most of Piseco-Powley Road and hike back to Goldmine Stream Falls or maybe Sand Like on Saturday. Sunday, maybe the Potholers and then end the day in Little Falls, exploring Moss Island and the Herkimer Home, and riding the Erie Canal Trail. I am not planning to get home until dusk, so I will have the full afternoon and evening. I am undecided if I’ll bring the kayak, I’m actually leaning against it at this point. 🛶 Paddling the Mohawk River might be fun but I can see more on Blackie on the bike trail.

Today in 1916, the Migratory Bird Treaty between Canada and the United States signed. 🐦 It was designed to save Migratory Birds by giving them international protection for the first time by placing limits on hunting and other means of taking. It became a center part of protecting the flock of birds, requiring duck stamps among other things.

In 1989, a solar flare from the Sun creates a geomagnetic storm that affects micro chips, 😎 leading to a halt of all trading on Toronto’s stock market. Sometimes the sun isn’t so nice, not that we’ve had much of it recently but hopefully tomorrow and most of the weekend, bar maybe a few hours of showers on Friday morning. We are though overdue for a big solar storm, and that could be very disruptive to every day life across the world, as the power grid gets shutdown and radio networks go dead during the storm.

Also, in 1993, Debian Linux is announced, 🐧 it would become the basis of many forms of Linux like Ubuntu Linux, which is currently what I run on my home computer. 👨‍💻 I’m not sure I love the direction Ubuntu has been going lately with the snaps, but I do like the XFCE window manager and I don’t know if I want to change over to a totally new distro, having to reinstall everything. Maybe eventually when I get a new laptop when my current one wears out — it’s now going on 7 years old, and while I don’t care it’s getting old but I do worry physical components wear out after a while. That said, I don’t carry it around as much now as I use my phone for most things.

And in 1966, the House Un-American Activities Committee begins investigations of Americans who have aided the Viet Cong. 🏵 The committee stated to intended to introduce legislation making these activities illegal. Anti-war demonstrators disrupt the meeting and 50 people are arrested. A long time ago now — but it reminds me a bit of the War in Iraq when I was young with Bush as President.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Average High Falls To 79 ️Degrees ⛱️️️ when the sun will be setting at 7:35 pm with dusk at 8:03 pm. On that day in 2022, we had rain and temperatures between 90 and 66 degrees. We hit a record high of 98 back in 1953. The 1953 heat wave!
