Good morning! Happy Martin Luther King Day 🖤 ! Three weeks to Clean Your Computer Day 🧹. Sunny and 11 degrees in Delmar, NY. 🌞 There is a northwest breeze at 9 mph. 🍃. The current wind chill is -3. Cold morning and going to be a cold day. There are 3 inches of snow on the ground. β˜ƒ ️Things will start to thaw out at Wednesday around noontime. 🌡️

Bit of a breeze but doesn’t seem particularly gusty right now but I wonder what it will be like when I head out later. 🎿 I’d still like to go skiing at Schodack Island in a bit but I also don’t want to get sicker. At this point if it was a work day I’d be on the way to work – and I’ve been up for 2 hours now but it sure just looks cold outside even if it is sunny β˜€. They’re certainly have been colder Martin Luther King days in the past.

M. L. King Day will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 23 degrees at 2pm. It’s the wind that makes it feel so cold. Seven degrees below normal. Northwest wind around 10 mph. A year ago, we had snow in the morning, which became light snow by afternoon. The high last year was 21 degrees. The record high of 53 was set in 2006. 10.4 inches of snow fell back in 2019.❄

I cleaned off my truck yesterday β›„ so when I head out I won’t be throwing snow and ice on the solar panel when driving 🚘 and to keep the batteries topped off in the cold. 🔋 Just a trickle charge with the low sun angle that’s fine as I’m not pulling much of a load these days in the winter as I’m not camping β›Ί. Even though the snow was modest this morning it would have been pretty cold to camp plus I got a lot of reading done at home. 📖

Somebody commented on one of my posts how relatively little power the solar panel on my truck puts out this time of year – and amp or two an hour at 12 VDC which is true 🔋 but my consumption is so low and the alternator does a good job topping things off when I drive. An amp an hour eight hours a day, seven days a week though adds up – 56 amp hours. That said, lately it seems like I’m getting about 400 watt hours a week or 30 amp hour at 14 volt DC. In the summer when camping I can easily do 1,200 watt hours a week or 85 amp hours not including what I get from the alternator.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:07 pm with sun having an altitude of 27.2Β° from the due south horizon (-43.6Β° vs. 6/21). At least the sun angle is rapidly improving but its still low in the sky. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 4:10 pm with the sun in the southwest (235Β°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-southwest (243Β°) starting at 4:50 pm and lasts for 3 minutes and 15 seconds with dusk around 5:23 pm, which is one minute and 14 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 5:58 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies 🌃 and temperatures around 23 degrees. The wind chill around sunset will be 12. β˜ƒοΈ There will be a northwest breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 32 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 52 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear 🌃, with a low of 7 degrees at 5am. Seven degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around 7 at 6pm; Northwest wind 5 to 9 mph. In 2019, we had light snow. It got down to -7 degrees. The record low of -18 occurred back in 1994.

Mild but cloudy next weekend. ☁ Saturday, a chance of rain and snow. Cloudy, with a high near 38. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Not sure if there will much snow for the Pine Bush hike. Probably good though to bring microspikes. Sunday, a chance of rain and snow. Cloudy, with a high near 39. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Typical average high for the weekend is 31 degrees. Starting to warm up a bit.

🌹🌻🌼Only 59 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!🌹🌻🌼

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Clean Your Computer Day 🧹 when the sun will be setting at 5:20 pm with dusk at 5:49 pm. Don’t even need a skid loader or manure spreader for that. Or just buy more disk space, it’s so cheap these days. You can get a 128 gb USB stick for under $15 at Wally World. I don’t even know what you would put on a memory stick that big. On that day in 2019, we had mostly cloudy, with snow showers and temperatures between 33 and 17 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 33 degrees. Right on target. We hit a record high of 53 back in 1955. No tail fins on the cars back then, well except for small ones.

Teachout Road

One of the biggest changes over the past.

One of the biggest changes over the past year in my camping experiences is I’ve started to do less driving. More often now I will set up camp and park my truck, and walk from there on my adventures.

Solar, well some. It's December.

While motoring can get you farther then you can get on your feet, walking can teach you more about the land and appreciate your surroundings more. Having the solar panel on my truck means I can usually have enough power for subsequent nights especially if I conserve power and have a bright sunny day. It’s kind of nice spending more time near camp rather then putting extra miles on the truck and burning more gas, although it does make the time go by faster it seems.

Good morning! Today 4:30 PM Sunset 🌆. It’s going to be a while before the 8:30 sunset returns but slowly but surely creeping towards black fly season. In the mean time, Three weeks to Winnie the Pooh Day 🍯. I’ve always been quite partial to honey. Bee 🐝 keeping is a big hobby for a lot of people. Good for the flowers 🌸 and orchards too. 🍎And a good source of year around sugars in much of the country. Drizzle and cloudy and 36 degrees in Delmar, NY. 💧 There is a northwest breeze at 13 mph. 🍃.

Right now it’s kind of a dark and gray morning. ☁ A few rain drops here and there. Supposed to clear out later but I’m still a bit hesitant to rush out. I get tired of these gray and cold days in the woods. I decided last night to pull the plug 🔌 on the Finger Lakes trip though I think I will camp out in Madison County today and visit Glimmerglass State Park. Supposed to clear out later and be a nice mild night and it looks like it’s snow free out that way from both the radar and webcams in Hamilton. Last night I was thinking about going to the Adirondacks but I don’t really feel like camping in the snow ❄ again. Plus while they don’t have a ton of snow up north, they had a fair amount of snow a few weeks ago which can mean snow banks hardened to ice. It’s going to be warm enough that I don’t think I’ll have to pitch a tent 🎪.

This mornings weather is kind of a bummer 😐 but it promises to change. I’m kind of slow rolling 🍥 getting out of town to see what really happens because if it’s going to be gray today and tomorrow, I might as well not waste the $50 in gas. β›½ It’s warm enough for sure but gray and windy. I do like the rural landscape, small towns and farms along US 20 🚜 but I’ve driven that road too much in the fog 🌁 and rain.

I am fully packed except for my gun and personal care supplies 🪒. I am just waiting on the sun but not for much longer. Hopefully it will come out soon and make for a nice drive. I don’t want to get out there too late lest the road is closed and I have to camp β›Ί somewhere else. It should be good though – I will get to test out my gas lantern 🏮 tonight to see if I have properly restored it after cleaning and see how the LED lantern works before I’m hot tenting later in the winter.

Today will be mostly sunny later 🌞, with a high of 44 degrees at 2pm. 12 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 26th. Northwest wind 7 to 14 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 50 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 1982. 7 inches of snow fell back in 1967.❄

The sun will set at 4:30 pm with dusk around 5:01 pm, which is 42 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for partly sunny skies 🌃 and temperatures around 43 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 4 minutes of daytime, an increase of 25 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌤, with a low of 26 degrees at 6am. Nine degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 4th. Northwest wind 3 to 6 mph. In 2018, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 26 degrees. The record low of -18 occurred back in 1933.

I checked the oil in the truck 🚚 and it was good. Maybe that’s because it’s on a bit of a slope from the ice on the driveway but at any rate it’s not real low. I haven’t driven that many miles since my November oil change. The accessory battery bank 🔋 is lower than I would hope but the alternator will charge that up. This morning I changed the starting battery disconnect voltage to 13.2 volts up from 13.0 volts so hopefully this will keep the accessory battery bank healthier even if it means I’m dumping slightly less excess charge into the starting battery. The relay is engaged at 14.2 volts on the solar panel, which I increased on Christmas Eve 🎄

Lyme disease seems to be bothering me again. 😟 I had a bad headache this morning and I’m a bit sore in my knee and elsewhere. 💪I’ve heard that it’s not uncommon for Lyme symptoms to stick around for a while after the antibiotics although for a while I was feeling good but kind of slipped downhill after the doxcycline ran out. I used to think it was only girly people got chronic Lyme 👧, but people I know who complain about Lyme haul feed sacks all day, shovel manure and get pushed around by cows 🐮 all day long and then own more guns than I do 🔫 and aare hardly weak. I might go back to the doctor on Monday or Tuesday 😷 but I really hate to go unless I’m truly sick and not just a headache. And maybe I’m just getting another cold.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Winnie the Pooh Day 🍯 when the sun will be setting at 4:50 pm with dusk at 5:21 pm. On that day in 2019, we had snow showers, mostly cloudy and temperatures between 35 and 21 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 30 degrees. We hit a record high of 59 back in 1973.

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Second to Last Friday of the year! πŸŽ‡ Christmas is next Wednesday. πŸŽ„Two weeks to Latest Sunrise of the Winter πŸŒ„οΈ. Sunny and 9 degrees at the Elm Ave Park & Ride – CDTA. 🌞 There is a northwest breeze at 5 mph. πŸƒ. With only a slight breeze and a bright πŸ”† sun it’s a pretty nice morning, not too cold. There are 3 inches of snow on the ground. β˜ƒ ️Things will start to thaw out at Sunday around 11 am. 🌑️

I got listening to my headphone, singing along with My Back Pages, and I didn’t even see the bus pull up aside me. 🎧 I really didn’t mind this morning at all, even if the temperature is officially in the single digits. πŸ¦‹ With the sun and breeze we’ve had the past few days, there isn’t much ice on the sidewalks. I almost forget it was already Friday with the Friday driver. 🚌

Today will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 24 degrees at 2pm. 10 degrees below normal. Northwest wind around 6 mph becoming calm in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 43 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 1957. 8.4 inches of snow fell back in 1975.❄

The sun will set at 4:24 pm with dusk around 4:56 pm, which is 25 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for clear skies πŸŒƒ and temperatures around 21 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Shouldn’t be a half bad evening but too cold for sitting out back with a glass of apple juice 🍏. Today will have 9 hours and 3 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 9 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear πŸŒƒ, with a low of 7 degrees at 2am. 12 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around 8 at 12am; Calm wind. Kind of a cold night on tap but warmer than late. In 2018, we had light rain. It got down to 37 degrees. The record low of -18 occurred back in 1942.

Today a train moved very fast in America — that is relatively speaking. In 1967, a Pennsylvania Railroad Budd Metroliner exceeds 155 mph on their New York Division, now Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor. πŸš…This was kind of the last hurrah for the Pennsylvania Central , they would merge with their competitors New York Central and be bankrupt by 1970. πŸš‰While the railroads had many fatal blows it was the interstates that killed off at least the passenger service. Eventually with a lot of government help the freight railroads turned around and became fairly healthy.

Tomorrow will be partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 29 degrees at 2pm. Five degrees below normal. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 62 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 2018. 6.6 inches of snow fell back in 2008.❄

It should be a nice day for the Save the Pine Bush Ski, 🌲🌾🌲🌲🎿 with lots of sun β˜€ and not so cold. I cleaned off my truck and the solar panel so I’m hoping with today’s sun the batteries will get topped off I shouldn’t have to use the ice scraper in the morning or worry about throwing ice ❄.

Looking ahead to Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 39. South wind around 5 mph. Typical average high for the weekend is 34 degrees. That should be a nice day for hooking up that voltage switch and testing it out with lots of sun. Maybe in the afternoon I’ll go skiing at Five Rivers — I think we will loose most of the snow come mid-week, they’re might not even be enough for good skiing on Christmas Eve. πŸ•But maybe my camping trip in the Finger Lakes will be snow free. I’m just hoping it won’t be too muddy.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Latest Sunrise of the Winter πŸŒ„οΈ when the sun will be setting at 4:34 pm with dusk at 5:05 pm. On that day in 2019, we had snow showers, mostly cloudy, mild and temperatures between 43 and 32 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 31 degrees. We hit a record high of 61 back in 1913.

Dumping Excess Power Into Starting Battery

Often when I am camping or when I leave my truck parked for a long period of time at home, I think it would be it would be nice to have the solar panel dump excess, unused power into the starting battery.

 New Battery

This means I would always have a very happy starting battery, ready to give maximum spin to the engine even in cold winter weather. The way to do this would be to have a voltage monitoring switch, like this $7 dollarΒ XY-CD60 voltage-monitoring switch I got from AliExpress. For about twice as much, you can get also get it on Amazon. It came in the mail, and it looks just like below — I haven’t had a chance to test it, but it looks like it will work perfectly for my situation.

My plan is to use this “voltage switch” to connect the relay between the starting battery and other batteries charged by the solar to dump the excess charge into the starting battery. I will probably set the unit into out mode (discharge protection mode), with an activation voltage at around 14.0 volts, with a delay of maybe 120 seconds, so that the relay isn’t activated until I know I have a sufficient charge to keep the voltage from dipping back below the threshold when the starting battery connects. It will take a while to figure out what settings works well for me — I don’t want to connect the starting battery too soon and have the voltage drop have it shut off the relay prematurely.

The product didn’t come with any documentation but the AliExpress website has some decent documentation in somewhat broken English, but I think I’ll be able to get it working fine. I’ll let you know how it works out.

December 2, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Cyber Monday 🛍️! Next Monday is Earliest Sunset of the Year βŒ›οΈ. Light snow and 31 degrees in Delmar, NY. ❄ There is a north breeze at 11 mph. 🍃. There are 13 inches of snow on the ground. β˜ƒ ️Everything is shutdown because it’s winter and they seem to do that a lot more these days. But what I do know I live in the city and the bus runs come sun, rain or snow. At any rate, the snow ain’t expected to last long. Things will start to thaw out at tomorrow around noontime. 🌡️ Sun too out tomorrow β˜€ which help with the melting process. I am going to glue the tips of my skis 🎿 as I expect snow to be around for the weekend.

I mean I’m not complaining that much about being stuck home 🏡, it beats trudging through the snow to the catch the bus which is most likely running behind schedule although it depends on route as the 8:25 has a pretty good layover before the start so it runs close to time. Today I’m going to work on some maps and do some reading 📖, finishing up the book I got on butchering 🔪and of course ride the exercise bike. 🚲 Sometimes being stuck home can be boring without a television 📺 or the interwebs. 💻 I bet the library is closed today as everything is closed today.

At some point I’ll dig out my truck 🚚, and get the ton of snow off the roof before anymore accumulates. ❄ This way with the warm temperatures and sun β˜€ later in the week I’ll be able to have the truck clear of snow come Saturday. Landlord is digging out my door now so hopefully it should be easy to get out once later on to dig out my truck. Mostly want to clean off the truck cap roof and solar panel and maybe the hood – the rest will hopefully melt away this week. 💧After I do that I want to take apart and clean the propane lantern 🏮 in hopes of getting that working properly again. Last time used it was burning dirty and dim, this past weekend winter camping I couldn’t even get to start. 🙍

Today will continue to have periods of snow. β›„ It’s stopped for now but it is expected to pick up later today. The snow could be heavy at times. 🀼/strong>󚀠High of 32 degrees at 9am. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 27th. North wind 11 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 41 degrees. The record high of 66 was set in 1998. 6.2 inches of snow fell back in 1949.❄

The sun will set at 4:22 pm with dusk around 4:54 pm, which is 18 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for snow 🌨 and temperatures around 31 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 14 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 16 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 22 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be periods of snow, mainly before 4am. The snow could be heavy at times. 🌨 Low of 22 degrees at 5am. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 13th. North wind 8 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 3 to 7 inches possible. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 25 degrees. The record low of -1 occurred back in 1976.

Tomorrow I have to wear a suit and tie to work 👔which means I have to polish my shoes and iron my shirt and pants. I might wear the boots 👢 in though because I don’t know how clear the sidewalks will be by morning. It would be bad to arrive to the meeting tomorrow and be covered with road salt and with wet dress shoes. That said, it looks like the snow will be pulling out relatively early this evening so the crews should get a lot of it cleaned up by morning.

I ordered a replacement cellphone cradle for my truck on Aliexpress. 📱 The ones I saw at Walmart were like ten times as expensive – I get the convenience factor but I can’t imagine spending more than $10 on something that is a plastic device that you clip your phone to the vent in your truck. Also ordered that voltage sensative control module I linked to yesterday. 🔌 I will use that to feed power to the starting battery whenever I have excess power on the solar panel to ensure its automatically topped off when camping multiple days with the engine off.

Cool this weekend with temperatures running 6 degrees below normal but otherwise sunny. πŸ˜€ Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 29. That’s cold for early January but not unheard of for December. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 37. I’m going to fix my skis🎿so I can use them for the weekend. Typical average high for the weekend is 39 degrees.

Warmer next week and we might have rain a week from now which would do a number on the snow β˜” but it’s so far out it could be rain, snow or nothing. I’m rooting for 45 degrees but I know the snowmobilers ain’t as their season opens after big game closes on Sunday.

As previously noted, next Monday is Earliest Sunset of the Year βŒ›οΈ when the sun will be setting at 4:21 pm with dusk at 4:53 pm. On that day in 2018, we had snow and temperatures between 33 and 27 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 38 degrees. We hit a record high of 62 back in 1966.

Towards Vermont

November 11, 2019 Night

Good evening! Cloudy and 33 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ There is a north breeze at 6 mph. 🍃. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 4 am. β˜ƒοΈ

I am feeling a lot better now. πŸ™‚ I went for an evening walk 🚶 around the high school 🚸 and also rode the excerise bike 🚲 for probably two hours today. Knees are a bit sore, probably those hours on the bike 💪. I have a ton of energy ⚑ now that my cold is relenting – as often happens after being sick. You feel so weak until you ain’t. Still think there is a good chance I have Lyme – going to get tested if the headaches and soreness continue after the cough is gone. But at least the energy is back. Going to need it with the bitter cold ❄ coming tomorrow. Heat is on and it’s comfortable.

I had a good dinner of fish 🐠 and mixed vegetables with frozen onions added for flavor. It was a basic and good dinner, a change from the usual pasta in the winter. I had frozen raspberries for dessert and a glass of apple juice 🍏. I get apple juice is high on sugar but I don’t ever have candy 🍬 or alcohol 🍻 at home and the sugar boost makes me sleepy before bed 😴. Only camping. I rode the exercise bike more after dinner watching the latest update from Red Poppy Ranch 🌸 on his YouTube channel. I stopped early as my neighbor was home and I didn’t want to disturb him with the rumble of my bike which is pretty loud 🔊. That said with the Bluetooth headphones he never hears my music, video or radio 📻. I try to cuss and drop shit less when he’s home. 💩

Tonight will have a chance of rain before 3am, then rain and sleet between 3am and 5am, then rain and sleet, possibly mixed with freezing rain after 5am. 😮🌀❄ Low of 30 degrees at 6am. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 21st. North wind around 6 mph becoming west after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Little or no ice accumulation expected. Total nighttime sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible. In 2018, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 29 degrees. The record low of 15 occurred back in 1976.

Tonight is the Beaver Moon but with the impending storm you won’t see much.🌝🚫 The moon is under the clouds, the beavers are hiding in the safety of their lodges. The sun will rise at 6:41 am with the first light at 6:11 am, which is one minute and 16 seconds later than yesterday. 🌄 Tonight will have 14 hours and 5 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 18 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will snow and sleet, becoming all snow after 7am, then gradually ending. β„β˜ High of 31 degrees at 8am. 18 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day in early January. Northwest wind 10 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 36 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than one inch possible. It’s going to be a messy commute some places but not so bad in Albany. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 47 degrees. The record high of 68 was set in 1909. 7.3 inches of snow fell back in 1968.❄

I’ll make it to work and it should be a fairly ordinary Tuesday. Probably take the local bus in if it’s really miserable come morning. 🚍 I’m hoping no headaches come the day time but I’ll make it through the day, I always do. 😧 After work, I’ll probably come home and continue to rest up but at least I think things are getting better health wise. I get paid tomorrow which is good 💸 as the big credit card 💳 bill is due Thursday.

Got replacement Bluetooth headphones. 🎧 Amazing how they’re under $8 at Walmart. The quality isn’t the same though, they don’t last as long and aren’t waterproof. But still six months is better than what I’d get with the wired ones. I saved the Bluetooth unit and battery in the old one, I could use it for a future 🔮 project.

Stocked up the pantry too, 🍇 I don’t plan to drive anywhere until next Sunday. $43 in groceries including foot powder and the headphones. Not too bad and I have more than 3/4 tank of gas left Solar should keep the truck ready to be started even if it cold out all week β˜€. I think eventually when I own my own place I’ll keep an old solar panel and charge controller on a rack and run wires with a quick connect to the battery 🔋 of my truck to keep the battery fully topped off when it is parked for long periods of time at my cabin.

I do miss camping β›Ί and traveling a lot this time of year. I do want to do at least one more camping trip this month and maybe an extended weekend winter trip come December or January depending on how much snow and road conditions. My often cold apartment in the cold gray weather gets me watching the YouTube video I’ve downloaded and thinking a lot more about my future 🔮 and my plans. I could turn the heat up or rent a nicer place but it’s good to dream and have a plan for a better tomorrow.

In four weeks on December 9 the sun will be setting at 4:21 pm,🌄 which is 15 minutes and 10 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had snow and temperatures between 33 and 27 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 38 and 24 degrees. The record high of 62 degrees was set back in 1966.

Looking ahead, Cyber Monday 🛍️ is in 3 weeks, First Sunday of Advent ✝️ is in 3 weeks, Earliest Sunset of the Year βŒ›οΈ is in 4 weeks and Festivus 🍖 is in 6 weeks.
